A Series of Firsts- Chapter 5

Characters: Yamada Hizashi/Present Mic, Todoroki Shouto

Summary: Shouto needs some new clothes to fill his new bedroom so Hizashi takes him shopping.

A/N: Sorry this took so long but I’m back again! In this chapter, I wanted to explore some of the long-lasting consequences Endeavour’s behaviour had on Shouto and also give him an opportunity to bond with Hizashi. I’m low on ideas at the moment so if you have any requests for this fic feel free to send them in!

As usual, this story is inspired by @deafmic  ‘s fic “Responsibility” which I highly recommend you go read, as it is a wonderful story.

Since Hizashi and Shouta have officially adopted him and he’s going to be staying with them from now on, they’ve been going through the long and arduous process of transferring all of Shouto’s old stuff to his new room. Shouto didn’t really want to go back to the old house so Fuyumi has been bringing over any leftover belongings she finds there. He really can’t thank her enough for how supportive she’s been throughout all of this. Hizashi noticed while he was unpacking that Shouto didn’t really have any clothes that had, as he put it, any “personality” so now he wanted to take him shopping.

To be honest the thought of going shopping feels a bit overwhelming at the moment. Shopping centres are full of people and people are loud and will probably make a big fuss over him if he’s seen out in public. There’s also the overpowering build-up of smells coming from the many food stalls that often make him feel sick. Hizashi had seen the look of worry on Shouto’s face and had told him that he didn’t have to go if he didn’t want to, but Shouto knows that he really does need to go shopping and it won’t do him any good to just hide from the things that scare him. Besides, it probably just seems really bad because he hasn’t been in a while and his father never really cared when he had what he now knows is a sensory overload. Things are different now, he’ll have Hizashi with him, who will make sure they can leave as soon as Shouto feels even a little overwhelmed.

He’s still trying to get used to having a proper say in how things go. Even just being able to make a decision based on how’s he feeling rather than what’s logical is a new experience for him. It’s hard not to fall back on old habits and push himself harder then he needs too. Every day he’s thankful that he’s got Hizashi and Shouta to help guide him. Shouta says it’s okay, normal even, to sometimes relapse into harmful behaviour and it may still happen even years from now although he should at least be better at dealing with it by then.

It should be ok to push himself a little bit though. Shopping isn’t a big deal and It’s not like the other bad habits that he normally does secretly or without thought. Hizashi even made sure to pick a day that hopefully won’t be too busy. There’s still enough people that Shouto feels nervous and he can’t help but pull the beanie he was wearing to conceal himself down a bit further. At least shopping has died down a bit since Christmas and New year have just passed.

As well as some new clothes, Hizashi is also hoping that they’ll be able to get some stuff for Shouto’s new room, although Shouto doesn’t think he would be able to manage both on one trip. Just the thought that Hizashi and Shouta are willing to let him choose out anything he wants for his new room is overwhelming on its own. As happy as he is to have the freedom of choice it’s… hard. If the last few weeks have taught him anything it’s that he’s apparently a very indecisive person and having someone make your every major life decision for you is a hard hole to crawl out of. Shouto’s never even had to consider what sort of posters he would like on his walls, which bedspread appeals to him, and whether or not he’d like to put any stuff on his shelves.

At the moment it feels like a lot of responsibility but Shouta and Hizashi have been really patient with him. He can’t help but feel a bit stupid over the fact that he struggles with something as simple as making his own choices but Shouta and Hizashi keep telling him that it’s not uncommon for kids in situations like his and he’ll learn to develop his own tastes in time. For the time being at least, Hizashi said he’s happy to help him pick out some stuff to fill his new accommodations.

As they begin their journey into the bowels of the shopping centre, Shouto feels a strong need to hold on to Hizashi’s hand but quickly brushes off the impulse as childish. However, much to his delight, Hizashi places a hand around his shoulder and looks down at him with a grin.

“Just so we don’t lose each other,” Hizashi says.

Just having that familiar weight on his shoulder instantly helps him to relax. This isn’t like when he was younger and he could either keep up with his father or get left behind, no matter how much he was suffering. Hizashi only has his best interests in mind and definitely won’t leave him behind if there’s something wrong.

They wander through the shopping centre and since Hizashi is holding on to him anyway, he takes the time to look around. Thankfully, no one seems to recognise him with his beanie on so no one’s paying him any mind. Most of the people there are families, probably getting ready for the new school year, Shouto used to get jealous when he saw them considering his family was always pretty broken. Now, he tries to look for similarities between them and what he has now. He thinks right now he most resembles the younger children being dragged along behind their flustered mothers. They look just as spaced out as he is right now.

Shouto comes to the realisation that they’ve stopped when Hizashi gives him a light shake. They’ve made it all the way to the men’s section of the clothing store and to be honest, Shouto is actually impressed by how little of the journey he processed.  

“Well, here we are kiddo-” Hizashi gestures over the selection of clothing like a ringmaster at the circus- “Go mad, choose whatever the hell you want, and feel free to ask if you want some help.”  

Shouto takes a moment to look over the clothing and try to figure out some sort of strategy. Shouto’s never really considered the clothes he wears before, he always just picked out the clothes he thought would piss off his Father the least but Hizashi says that his wardrobe is ridiculously plain for a teenage boy. In short, Shouto has no idea where to start.

He looks over to Hizashi who’s dressed in civvies for the shops. By now Shouto can recognise that Hizashi has a fairly distinct and unique style today, for example, he’s got sparkly leggings in colours that make his legs look like mermaid scales, a denim, halter neck crop top that leaves his back exposed, and his typical black leather jacket to cover up. Shouta always calls Hizashi’s style tacky but Shouto can’t deny that he really likes shiny things.

He starts to move through the aisles of clothing so Hizashi doesn’t get too concerned with him. He doesn’t think he really has the confidence to wear something as outgoing as what Hizashi’s wearing and he already draws enough attention as it is with his appearance. Not to mention how difficult it is to find outfits that match a candy cane coloured palette.

Hizashi must have noticed his hesitance because he calls out to him, “Just pick out anything that catches your eye for now. You can worry about whether it looks good later.”

The logic is perfectly sound, it’s just that Shouto’s brain won’t execute it. There are definitely items he thinks, ‘Wow, that looks nice,” but his thoughts insist on spiralling down a path of, ‘Oh it’s too bright,’ ‘It’s too flashy,’ and, ‘Something like that will never look good on me.’ He’s so used to wearing conservative clothes that he doesn’t even know how to shop for anything else at this point.

He can feel himself starting to get worked up when suddenly there’s a warm presence at his back, “Hey kiddo, it’s okay. Just take a big breath now.” Shouto follows through on the suggestion trying to let the tension out of his muscles the way Hizashi and Shouta had taught him. “Alright, how about you just show me the clothes you like and I’ll grab ‘em so you don’t have to think to hard about it,”

Shouto nods and goes back to looking at the clothes. It turns out when Hizashi said ‘show me,’ he wasn’t actually expecting Shouto to physically do anything, he just grabs everything Shouto looks at for more than a second. The collection they’ve racked up is of stuff Shouto would never have the confidence to buy of his own and he’s a little nervous to try it on. It does make him feel better if he thinks of it as Hizashi wanting him to try on the clothes.

The first thing he tries is a pale pink jumper that has a little-embroidered strawberry over the breast. Shouto thinks it looks soft and the colour is one of the few that probably suits him, but he’s hesitant because he’s worried what people will think of a boy wearing pink. He just stands and stares in the mirror for a little while before he finally works up the courage to go show Hizashi.

As soon as he steps out, looking down to hide his face, he hears quiet applause. When he looks up Hizashi is grinning like a maniac as he claps and Shouto can’t help but look at him wide-eyed.

“Y… You like it…?” Shouto can feel himself blushing.

Hizashi jumps up from where he was sitting, “Are you kidding me, kid?! I love it!”

Shouto winces a little at his volume, but he’s starting to get used to Hizashi’s naturally loud tones, he’s just worried about attracting too much attention from others.

“Do you really like it?” Shouto can’t help but make sure, “It’s not too… outgoing?”

Hizashi’s face softens at that and he steps forward to hold Shouto by the shoulders, “It is a bit outgoing, but that’s not a bad thing Shouto. You look great and I promise you other people are only going to think the same thing.”

Shouto bites his lip and looks away but Hizashi gently pulls eyes back to his, “It’s okay if you’re still a bit apprehensive. These things take time. But I promise, no one’s going to be upset with you,” Hizashi gives him a mischievous smirk, “and you will never look worse then I do on a daily basis.”

Shouto can’t help but chuckle a bit at that, “I don’t think you look so bad, you can pull off anything.”

Hizashi gives him a soft pat on the shoulder, “Well you know, the secret to pulling off anything has nothing to do with how you look, it’s about having the confidence to wear it.”

He musters up a small smile for Hizashi, “I’ll try and do my best.”

Hizashi grins at him and heads back to his seat, “Well? You ready to try on the rest?”

Shouto just nods at him and heads back into the dressing room filled with a feeling more akin to excitement instead of nerves.

RP Log: Momori and Rerenima meet at an Ul’dahn ball.

Momori - Dressed in fine silks and finer filigree, the Ul’dahn elite made their way to the grand ballroom for yet another of one of their exclusive parties. But under the cover of revelry, business was being done. Alliances were drafted, rumors were exchanged, and strategies were formed.

Rerenima || Fancy parties were nothing new to Rerenima. It felt like he was sent to one of them at his mother's every opportunity. Already tonight he'd been forced into dozens of awkward conversations with other lalafell, and even some taller races... And now he stood grumbling at a punch bowl, trying desperately to stay as small as possible- smaller than he already was- to avoid yet another conversation.

Momori has spent most of the night by her client’s side, dutifully jotting down notes and storing business cards as they come. But, as the night stretched on, her client grew more and more interested in partying...it’s definitely the alcohol.

Momori - There wasn’t much for her to do now. From the corner of her eye, she spies someone lingering by the punch bowl, obviously trying to avoid conversation. Despite knowing this, Momori approaches.

Momori: “Hello.”

Rerenima nearly visibly cringed at the sound of a voice near him, and had to take stock of his own sanity before he could turn to face the voice with a pleasant, but very fake, expression. "Hello there, how fares the evening for you?" He asks, clearly not wanting to know the answer.

Momori mirrors his forced smile, and takes a moment to observe her target. Raven black hair - the new heir to the Rurunima fortune, perhaps? He doesn’t look too pleased to be here. Must be new.

Momori: “Night’s just getting started for me. How’s the punch?”

(Momori) dubiously flavored red punch is what i imagine )) (Momori) red flavored )) (Rerenima) ewwwww lol )) (Momori) better than blue! xD ))

Rerenima has one of the many glasses on the table in his hand, the long nails on one hand tapping against it idly. "If I'm being honest?" He responds, slightly less standoffish than before. He was expecting someone a bit.. older. Maybe this was his lucky day? "Not enough alcohol. Not -nearly- enough."

(Momori) Momori’s 30 btw..but then again. All lalas are ageless beings tbh >:D )) (Rerenima) engrish, me no wut is ) (Rerenima) pff not that much older than him xD ) (Momori) how olds Re? :o )) (Rerenima) settling with 27 for now. xD ( (Rerenima) Probably looks younger, though lol ) (Rerenima) if even lalas can tell that kind of thing xD ) (Momori) no idea )) (Momori) a 'child' lala uses the adult model LOL )) (Rerenima) further proof that they are grown in potato patches. )

Momori dully looks at the punch bowl, and then back to Rerenima. The stuffs strong...She’s had it before. Maybe he’s looking to get hammered? “If it’s more alcohol you want, Ser, that can be arranged.”

Momori ominously pulls out a small vial full of an unknown brown liquid, expression unchanging.

Rerenima must have a pretty high tolerance- he barely looks tipsy despite having stood there for only the gods know how long. He takes a glance to either side of him, checking to see if anybody was watching him. His mother was otherwise engaged, as was his butler Kelza, with some other family's servants, no doubt. "Sign me up," He replies with a sneaky little smirk, offering his glass to dump some of it into.

(Rerenima) cuz its always a good idea to take random unidentifiable liquid from strangers amirite? ) (Rerenima) WHAT COULD GO WRONG?? ) (Momori) LOL I was gonna say xD )) (Rerenima) bet she's kicking herself for not bringing some chloroform. "Hey, smell this!" "sure! X_X" ))

Momori raises a brow, but pours a shot’s worth of liquor into Rerenima’s glass. “...Cherry Brandewine.” She similarly pours herself a bit and takes a sip.

Momori: “You must be new around here.”

Rerenima spins his glass a bit to mix it up and gives it a tiny sniff, both eyebrows raised. PHEW. Yes. This will get him sufficiently slammed. Perfect. He takes a few gulps all at once, coughing in a most unmannerly way that caught the attention of a patron or two. He quickly straightens up and brushes himself off. Nothing to see here.

Rerenima: "Thanks!" He squeaks.

Rerenima: OH!

Rerenima: "Uhh.. new? I wouldn't say that, exactly. Been going to these damdable things since I was old enough to introduce myself without a stammer."

Rerenima: "You, on the other hand, I've not seen before."

Rerenima ponders over you.

Momori - His reaction is answer enough. The corner of her mouth quirks up as she holds herself back from laughing. Must. Be. Polite. Mustbepolite. She clears her throat.

Momori: “They do a good job at keeping me hidden in the back. And by they, I mean my clients.” She stiffly offers him her hand. “Momori Mori. Conservationist and historian.”

Rerenima seems sufficiently surprised. "Conservation efforts? Around here? And they're buying into it?" He asks, genuinely surprised that any number of the hoity toity frilly guests here would be interested in anything other than lining their own pockets.

Momori gives him a practiced smile. “You’d be surprised how much history means to those in this room. Now...” She casually leans against the punch table. “What do you go by? Unless you’re content being indexed as ‘hey you’ in my mind.”

Rerenima chuckles as the booze settles in. "Rerenima Rurunima. The pleasure is mine." Hard to say if he means that or not. He takes another drink off the glass, smaller this time.

Momori narrows her eyes for just a split second as her suspicions are confirmed. It could be valuable to get to know him a bit more, given his family’s wide net of connections. She refills his glass, hoping that another drink could help loosen his lips...and lower his guard.

Momori: “Likewise. So, what do you think about all this?” She gestures to the ballroom and, in turn, the rich folk that fill it. “For many, they see opportunity. Money to be made. Power to be gathered. What about you? Do you see something else?”

Rerenima seems to be internally debating with himself over exactly how he should answer this question, given where he's located and who could be listening. But, after a few more sips, he's run out of fucks to give, and states as plainly as can be, "I see a bunch of lecherous old men and women eyeballing me like I'm some prize to be won or some happy ending to their utterly boring night. Frankly, I feel filthy just standing around here -letting- them look at me, and I want out. You?"

(Rerenima) when u painfully aware that ur mama tryna sell you like a high class whore lol ) (Rerenima) bet that there's more than a few lalas around here who are strictly gilsexual. Gender got nothin to do with it, but they better be loaded. With money. ) (Rerenima) i ain't sayin they's a gold digger... )

Momori can’t help herself. A cheeky grin spreads on her face and she giggles a single time - the rest is kept back when she brings a clenched fist up to her lips. But as quickly as she had let out her true feelings, her mask is back on. Stoic, serious Momori.

Momori: “...Ahem.”

Momori: “Perhaps I am naive compared to you, Ser, but I see a room full of good lords and ladies who hold the financial fate of Ul’dah in their hands. Hmmm.” She adjusts her glasses, looks at the crowd, and then Rerenima. “But if I squint, I can see what you mean. Hehe.”

(Momori) LOL I feel if Kelza were here he'd be dragging Re back to safety by his ear )) (Rerenima) conveeeeniently distracted for the time being lol ) (Momori) butler be butlering! ))

Rerenima almost immediately feels bad after her response. "Maybe," he mumbles, taking another sip. He's leaning on the table now, and seems to have forgotten some of his manners in all of the alcoholic haze. "I've just.. I'm not much a part of it. I mean, I am, I benefit from it, but this whole business running thing? Not for me. Not really. Better left to the people who know what the hell they're doing."

Momori tilts her head, somewhat surprised. “And here I thought all rich families raised their heirs with one purpose in mind. You’re not like them, Rere. And that’s a good thing.”

Momori: “And I can guarantee you that, in this room, there are countless others who don’t know what the hell they’re doing. They just aren’t aware of that fact.”

Rerenima: "Just maybe I -would've- been taught how to do all these things if my father hadn't suddenly... y'know." He waves a hand about dismissively, and for just a moment seems like he might truly get upset about it and make a scene.

Momori blinked. She had heard rumors, and it seemed that there was an inkling of truth in them yet. But she got the feeling that he wasn’t quite ready to tell her the details. It was too sensitive. “...Sounds like you need a bit of fresh air, and maybe another shot.”

Rerenima: "I think I do," He agrees in a wobbly, small voice. He abandons his glass, and the table, and as well as he can, heads towards the nearest exit while avoiding as many people as possible. The gaze he did -not- escape, however, was Kelza's. Rather than follow his charge, however, he simply watches him go with a curious, if not slightly concerned, expression. Another conversation distracts him once again.

Momori watches Rere leave - and as she walks by her, she slips her business card into his pocket. “Hey, some friendly advice. Don’t take drinks from strangers.” Momori smiles slightly. “See you ‘round.”

Momori checks on her client. Passed out, like always...which meant she had a fair bit of free time on her hands. Where would this drunk whelp wander too? Right before he completely leaves her sight, she dips behind a curtain and follows from the shadows.

Rerenima barely hears the advice, his brow furrowed as he stops in his tracks to ponder on it.. and then carry on again. Was it just him, or was it getting unusually warm in here suddenly? He wanted- no, he NEEDED- to get out of here, away from all these people.. and so he walked, pushed his way through the crowd, didn't even bother to apologize.

(Rerenima) this seems "away" enough lol ) (Rerenima) nice dark corner rofl ) (Momori) damn this dramatic lightning! (Rerenima) if i tilt the camera just right i get dramatic anime glasses lol ) (Momori) oh perf!!!! ))

Rerenima finally gets outside of the building, immediately taking a deep breath of fresh air.. and just as quickly taking a few steps off to the side to hurl all the alcohol he's been consuming. Guess he had just a liiiiittle too much.

Momori follows a distance away. It’s something she’s done many, many times. Gods, he makes a tempting target to simply rob and run, but she isn’t in the business of such crude practices anymore. Instead, she waits. Likely, someone else has their eye on him already..

Rerenima makes an unhappy groan once everything's done with, muttering more than a few curses as he stumbles just a few more feet away and collapses on his ass on the top of the stairs looking as miserable as can be.

(Rerenima) maaan he gon be so easy to pick on rofl ) (Momori) someone could just gently take him away.....if kelza was watching too, we’d have a person stalking at a person stalking at a person situation going on xD )) (Rerenima) stalker stalking a stalker stalking a dummy. ) (Momori) want me to jump him or do u wanna write for some thugz )) (Momori) *me writing some thugz. Momori will just be watching suspiciously in the night the whole time lmao )) (Rerenima) he's aaaall hers. xD  ) (Rerenima) buut can raise the stakes a lil :) ))

Rerenima || Meanwhile, back at the party, Re's mother seems to have realized that her son's vanished. She'd wanted to introduce him to someone! In a huff, she stalks over to Kelza, and demands to know where he's gotten to! When no answer is provided, he is DEMANDED to go find him! Immediately!

Momori - Rerenima’s drunken wandering does not go unnoticed. A gang of lalafell dressed in cheap leather armor jovially play cards nearby, and their conversation quickly goes from impassioned shouts to hushed plotting. As a group, they encircle Rere and one of them nudges him with the butt of their club. “Eh. You.”

(Momori) Re's mom sounds like a helicopter parent )) (Rerenima) only when it benefits her :) )

Rerenima , who is in no mood at all for anything or anyone, simply grumbles, "What do you want..." without actually looking behind him. Perhaps he should've.

(Rerenima) when u too rich to know what danger looks like

Momori: “Oy, this one’s as drunk as a pig! Let’s get ‘im, boss!” one of the thugs says, just loud enough for Rere to hear. The leader nods, and each one of them pulls up a bandana to hide their identity. Another cuts off any escape routes, and keeps watch for any guards.

Momori: “Give me everything in your pockets. Now. Hurry.” The thug presses the end of his club against Rere’s chest, commanding urgency.

Rerenima || At first he'd simply rolled his eyes, but as more of the conversation revealed itself, sobriety set in quickly. "Wait, what?!" and all at once he was wide-eyed and terribly aware of just how many thugs were actually out here tonight. This wasn't looking good for him. Shit shit. Shouldn't have come out here alone. Shit. SHIT! For once, he does the smart thing- exactly what he's asked. Unfortunately for them, he's not carrying all that much- a couple gil, whatever's on his fingers...

Momori - The amount is not enough to get the thugs off his back, not by a long shot. The thug grumbles, and eyes what Rere might have on his person. Any valuable jewelry or items of great value?

(Momori) family ring? or anything that would cause a stir if it were gone )) (Momori) heck they'll just take his glasses lmao )) (Rerenima) hahaha poor kids gon be blind (Rerenima) tempted to have someone come to the rescue but that might ruin poor momo's chances haha (Momori) momo is completely content to stand by and watch if you want to be rescued by someone else! )) (Momori) momori is a terrible person lmao )) (Rerenima) the badass butler XD ) (Momori) oh shiiet )) (Momori) go for it! ))

Rerenima is on his feet now, waving his hands about and insisting he doesn't have anything else... at least not that would be worth anything! Surely! Except there was -one- thing, and it was quickly snatched away from him. A pocket watch, that it -almost- seemed like he would be willing to fight for had he not been held back by some handsy assholes. (cont)

Rerenima || Meanwhile, Kelza, silently cursing himself for letting an idiot out of his sight, opens the same back door that Re had just come from, and immediately sees the ruckus. Oh HELL no. He takes a gun from the inside of his jacket, aims upwards, and shoots. THAT aughta get their attention.

(Momori) GUN )) (Rerenima) dont bring a knife to a gun fight >:3 )

Momori: “Shit! Scramble, boys!” The thugs holding Rere quickly push him to the ground and each of them, as they pass, give him a drive-by kick. Pocket watch in their possession, they split up and flee into the dark alleyways like desperate rats.

Momori ‘s full attention is now on Kelza as she passively observes from her hiding spot.

(Rerenima) HAHA ) (Rerenima) i like how he literally hops into the sitting position rofl ) (Momori) little bounce xD ))

Rerenima doesn't have much time to shout after them, as he's both pushed, and then kicked, falling to the ground like a rock, breaking his glasses, cracking a nail.. it's not a good night for him. Rather than acting like a worried mother when Kelza rushed to Re's side, as one might suspect a butler should do, he made quick to chastize him. "What did I tell you about going off on your own?! You're lucky you're alive!"

Rerenima: "They.. they took it.. They took it!!" He suddenly cries out to Kelza's surprised expression.

Rerenima: "Took what?" The butler asks, annoyed.

Rerenima: "His watch! I need to get it back!"

Rerenima: "You were two minutes away from dead and -that's- what you're worried about?!" Kelza snaps, but Rerenima snaps right back at him! "He gave that to me! It's the only thing I have left of him!"

Rerenima: "How much did you drink?" Kelza asks accusingly.

Rerenima Between the two of them, the argument continues unabated for several long minutes, with Re attempting his damndest to convince Kelza that he NEEDED to get that watch back, and Kelza very much brushing him off-- literally and figuratively-- and eventually insisting- no, requiring, that they go home. Now.

Rerenima || The more he was brushed at, the angrier Re got until all at once he slaps Kelza's hand away, standing on his own, and doing exactly that. But there is a determination there in his plastered eyes that was not there before. Fuck this entire day.

Momori’s brows drew together as she contemplated the true nature of Rere and Kelza’s relationship. No matter, there was a takeaway regardless of that. A pocket watch found, and a debt created...Her master would be interested in hearing more about this. But around now, her client would be coming to their senses back at the party, and she had appearances to keep up.

Momori silently steps back into the shadow, the night cloaking her like an old friend.

Now Is the Time to Be Gracious and Get to Work Being Honest with Ourselves

Whew.

We squeaked by with that one despite Biden/Harris winning more votes than any other ticket in history. Donald Trump also won the second most votes than any other candidate in history. In more ways than a few this shit was historic.

As obvious the road is all uphill, I’ll admit to bawling like a child when it hit me that we were rid of Trump and that it was Joe Biden and Kamala Harris taking the reigns. Tears of joy, of relief, of optimism paying off.

Still the Left lost some of the House and might take the Senate but this was not the election we were promised. As I wrote last week, the will of the people has been cast and we are almost 50/50 in worldview here, gang. Bitter as it is to swallow, nearly half the country does not buy the progressive vision. This isn’t just the South. This isn’t just cities vs rural areas.

Trump received the largest percentage of non-white votes of any other conservative candidate — you guessed it — in history. Pretty much debunks the monolithic viewpoint that Trump supporters are all white supremicists, huh?

I’ve heard squawk that Biden won because of black voters. And progressive voters. And young voters. Horseshit. How typical, the jockeying for credit in something historic. The credit goes to a vast multicultural liberal numbers not one demographic category. Forty-five million independent voters (neither affiliated with Blue or Red) voted this year. That’s historic, too. Biden won because of people not in line with either party or ideology. Biden won because so many of us hated Trump.

At this phase, Trump ain’t going quietly. Lots of lawsuits. Recounts. Tantrums. Conspiracy theories. We now get to witness the full madness of our King George, a meltdown so massive it would be good to take serious note of how badly we can get things wrong in our democracy. One fact we need to acknowledge before our nipples get hard and we go running in the streets naked, flogging MAGA hat wearers with our engorged cocks:

If it hadn’t been for a pandemic, he would’ve won.

No. It wasn’t the woke message of the victim classes that sealed this win for us. It wasn’t the democratic socialists dressed in black fighting against fascism. It wasn’t the fat, black lesbian instructing white people that they are all racist that brought out the vote for Blue. It wasn’t the Bernie Bots raging against the one percent. It wasn’t the cultmind of the white fragility hucksters and anti-racism grifters that thwarted the horrible man.

It was a virus that he handled like a demented, angry man who truly believed that only the weak get sick.

We did not defeat Trump. He defeated himself. The man has been accused of multiple rapes, tax fraud, and was impeached by the House of Representatives and skated right on past it all but his inept refusal to humble himself to an act of savage nature was his undoing.

Despite his bumbling incompetence in the face of Coronavirus, seventy million people voted for him. Are you so arrogant and morally vacuous to label seventy million people racists monsters? Are you that stupid?

There will be months of justifying why half the country disagrees with the Left in terms of governance. It wasn’t half. We won by five million votes. It was beyond decisive. There will be thinkpieces in Medium claiming that Hispanics are full of white adjacents and that we should round up all the Trump Enablers and have them shunned and shamed (in between essays about how difficult it is to be black in an Ivy League university and how that guy who ghosted her was actually proliferating a rape of feels). Yes. There will be plenty said and absolutely no self reflection.

We (and I use ‘we’ to signify a collective encompassing all of us who value the ideals of a liberal democracy comprising seventy-five million citizens who voted Blue) fucking blew some serious stuff on this one.

What do we know?

Neither Bernie nor Warren would’ve won (even in the razor thin margins that Biden did).

That the loss in 2016 may have been less about Hillary Clinton or her campaign and more about this fifty/fifty split in worldview.

That Hispanics are not a monolithic voting bloc of similar ideologies. Neither are blacks. Or Asians. Or whites.

That race polarization is far less important than class stratification.

That “Defund the Police” is a shit slogan. And a worse strategy.

That seventy million of our countrymen and women would rather have a piece of shit like Donald Trump in charge than hand things over to the humorless cult members of the Woke.

That calling seventy million people racists didn’t somehow convince them that they were and cause the scales to fall from their eyes.

Most people find some humility when they lose. In 2016, we found none. It was sexism! It was racism! It was that we fucked Bernie out of the nomination! This week we won but we won small. We won because of a natural disaster not because of the strength of our ideas or the compassion for our fellow citizens or for our brilliant communications skills (which is a surprise as so many liberals have degrees in marketing and communication).

We won. And we need some goddamned humility for not beating a hopeless incompetent and morally bereft turd like Donald Trump with a repudiation only seen by the light of damnation and hellfire. We won but just barely given the brazen horror of the man (and, no, you don’t take down a dictator by voting meaning as awful and embarrassing as the man was and is, he was and is definitely not a dictator). In any other reality (except for a Black Mirror episode) we should have beaten him so badly that he, Giuliani, and McConnell changed their names and became dentists in Brazil.

We won but we lost.

I’m thrilled to be rid of Trump although we are not rid of the reality that his stances on immigration, the police, democratic socialism, American isolationism, and the idea that COVID only affects the weak are incredibly popular with just a bit less than half the country. Until the man dies, he will have an undue influence on things.

So what now?

We celebrate in direct contrast to the CDC advisories to avoid crowds. The ‘rona loves this shit and is wholly apolitical. A Trump rally and a Biden celebration look pretty much the same to the virus. Republicans caution us to avoid being sore winners as if the rules change if they lose.

I hope the adults in the national room hear the song being played. I hope that we can listen to but not be bound by the complaints of the fringe. I hope we can reframe our ideas to convince a plurality of Americans that progress is a good thing for everyone not just a select few who hunker down in their guns rights and racial division cults.

We’ve spent at least two decades behaving like Donald Trump — angry, self-involved, namecalling, divisive. It took having that avatar of unselfish-reflective narcissism occupying our highest office for just over half of us to get tired of it but wholly adopt his methods to defeat him. We can be better than that so why not try to be?

The Democratic allegations at the heart of the ongoing impeachment inquiry are pretty simple: that Donald Trump used the power of the presidency to pressure a foreign government to improperly investigate Joe Biden. Or as Democrat Eric Swalwell of California summarized it on Nov. 7, “Defense dollars for dirt.”

The Republican response, by contrast, has been less straightforward. In the weeks since Sept. 24, when the White House released a rough transcript of Trump’s July 25 call with Ukrainian president Volodomyr Zelensky, the Republican defense has shifted dramatically, from denying the charges and then dismissing that they would be impeachable if true, to denigrating witnesses and evidence and attacking the impeachment process.

Democrats paint the changing defense as evidence of its weakness. Republicans attribute it to another source: disorganization. So far, they say, there’s been little coordination between the White House and Trump’s nominal allies on the Hill about a messaging strategy.

Here’s a look at how the defense of Donald Trump has changed since the impeachment proceedings began.

‘No Quid Pro Quo’

Since the moment he authorized the release of a transcript, Trump has maintained there was no quid pro quo in his withholding military aid from Ukraine while pushing the country to investigate Joe and Hunter Biden. In a tweet announcing the decision to publish the call, Trump said his conversation with President Zelensky was “totally appropriate,” that he applied “no pressure,” and that there was “NO quid pro quo.”

Trump has continued to chant this mantra at rallies, on Twitter and in interviews — a blanket defense of the core issue at the center of Democrats’ investigation. And it has been echoed by other top members of his Administration. “The transcript of the President’s phone call with President Zelensky… there was no quid pro quo,” Vice President Mike Pence said on Oct. 3. “There was no pressure.” Kellyanne Conway, counselor to the president, Larry Kudlow, Trump’s chief economic advisor, Steve Mnuchin, Treasury secretary, and others of Trump’s top allies have all repeated this line as well.

But this stance has become more complicated in recent days as witnesses have asserted explicitly to House investigators that there was, in fact, a quid pro quo.

“That was my clear understanding,” Bill Taylor, the top U.S. diplomat in Ukraine, testified last month. “Security assistance money would not come until the president [of Ukraine] committed to pursue the investigation,” Taylor continued, according to the transcript of his testimony. On Nov. 5, the U.S. Ambassador to the European Union, Gordon Sondland, revised his original testimony to include that he had passed along such a message to a Zelensky advisor. “I said that resumption of the U.S. aid would likely not occur until Ukraine provided the public anticorruption statement that we had been discussing for many weeks,” Sondland said in a written statement.

Some aides have since adjusted their strategy, and been backing away from an unequivocal “no quid pro quo” defense.

On Nov. 3, for example, Conway changed her tune on CNN. She continued to say there was no quid pro quo, but then when pressed by CNN’s Dana Bash, Conway said, “I don’t know whether aid was being held up and for how long.”

Attacking the process

When Pelosi announced the start of a formal impeachment inquiry on Sept. 24, Republicans immediately began decrying the process and questioning the legitimacy of the investigation. In past impeachments, the inquiries had been voted on by the full House, whereas in this case, Pelosi didn’t hold a vote to begin it. While that broke with tradition, there is nothing in the Constitution that says the House needs a vote to begin an impeachment investigation. But Republicans and White House lawyers seized on the procedural omission to defend Trump nonetheless. As the investigation has proceeded, they’ve also criticized the fact that many of the hearings have been held behind closed doors.

“This is a process problem,” Rep. Mark Meadows, an ally of the President and leader of the Freedom Caucus, told TIME in late October. “If you focus on communication and not process, you’re focusing on the wrong thing.”

On Oct. 8, White House Counsel Pat Cipollone sent a letter to House Democratic leaders in which he said they “have designed and implemented your inquiry in a manner that violates fundamental fairness and constitutionally mandated due process,” specifically citing the lack of a House vote to authorize it. He announced that Trump and his Administration would not cooperate with the investigation.

“We think there’s serious constitutional flaws [with] the way the process is going on,” Trump’s personal attorney Jay Sekulow told TIME on Oct. 22.

Senate Judiciary Chairman Lindsey Graham introduced a resolution in October condemning the inquiry, arguing that Democrats are “abandoning more than a century’s worth of precedent and tradition in impeachment proceedings and denying President Trump basic fairness and due process accorded every American.” Graham and other Republicans have complained both about the lack of a full House vote to begin the probe and that the testimony has thus far largely not been public.

On Oct. 31, the House did vote on formalizing the inquiry, and public hearings are set to start next week. While he often refers to the impeachment investigation as a “witch hunt” — the same term he used to describe Robert Mueller’s investigation — Trump has urged Republicans to move away from process arguments as the inquiry has proceeded. “I’d rather go into the details of the case rather than process,” Trump told reporters on Oct. 28 of how Republicans in Congress were defending him. “Process is good, but I think you ought to look at the case, and the case is very simple and quick.”

Undermining the credibility of witnesses

Trump and his allies have attempted to undermine the credibility of certain witnesses and poke holes in their testimony. Trump has repeatedly attacked the whistleblower whose complaint spurred the impeachment inquiry, calling for the person’s identity to be revealed and criticizing the media for not publishing it. He has also asserted, without evidence, that the whistleblower has a political agenda.

“There have have been stories written about a certain individual, a male, and they say he’s the whistleblower,” Trump told reporters on Nov. 3. “If he’s the whistleblower, he has no credibility because he’s a Brennan guy, he’s a Susan Rice guy, he’s an Obama guy. And he hates Trump.”

After Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman, a National Security Council official, testified behind closed doors on Oct. 29, Trump tweeted that he was a “Never Trumper witness.” On Nov. 2, when asked whether he regrets that comment, Trump seemed to imply he had damaging information to release about Vindman: “Well, you’ll be seeing very soon what comes out and then you can ask the question in a different way,” Trump said.

As members of conservative media amplified Trump’s attacks on Vindman, who was born in Ukraine, and questioned his patriotism, some Republicans in Congress condemned the line of attack. “I’m not going to question the patriotism of any of the people who are coming forward,” Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said the day of Vindman’s testimony. House Republican Conference Chairwoman Liz Cheney said questioning Vindman’s patriotism was “shameful.”

Sondland, on the other hand, is a Trump donor, and can’t be criticized as a “Never Trumper.” When he updated his testimony in a statement that said he had been the messenger of a quid pro quo, White House press secretary Stephanie Grisham released a statement saying, in part, “Ambassador Sondland squarely states that he ‘did not know, (and still does not know) when, why or by whom the aid was suspended.’ He also said he ‘presumed’ there was a link to the aid — but cannot identify any solid source for that assumption.”

There may have been a quid pro quo, but that’s not impeachable

On Oct. 17, acting White House chief of staff Mick Mulvaney held a press conference in which he dramatically changed the defense of Trump’s actions, and then walked back his comments hours later. While Trump had been continuing to proclaim “no quid pro quo,” while standing behind the podium in the White House press briefing room, Mulvaney seemed to acknowledge that there had been one — but that it wasn’t a problem. “Did he also mention to me in [the] past the corruption related to the DNC server? Absolutely,” Mulvaney said of a conversation he had with Trump. “No question about that. But that’s it, and that’s why we held up the money.”

“I have news for everybody: Get over it,” Mulvaney said. “There’s going to be political influence in foreign policy.”

Reaction to what seemed to be the first acknowledgement of a quid pro quo in the conversation at the heart of the impeachment inquiry was swift, and hours later, Mulvaney put out a statement disputing his earlier comments. “There was absolutely no quid pro quo between Ukrainian military aid and any investigation into the 2016 election,” he said in his later statement.

While he had to walk back his explanation of why Trump held up aid money to Ukraine, others are now shifting to a defense of Trump that mirrors Mulvaney’s original comments: that there may have been a quid pro quo, but that’s not an impeachable offense.

This line of defense has emerged as multiple witnesses (including Sondland and Taylor) have testified about the occurrence of a quid pro quo. “If it was a condition of getting aid that there be an investigation into a political rival, that was inappropriate,” the top Republican on the House Armed Services Committee, Mac Thornberry of Texas, told NPR on Oct. 28. “Whether it rises to the standard of being an impeachable offense — that’s a different question.”

“The Senate will face the question of whether that’s an impeachable offense,” Sen. Roger Wicker, a Republican from Mississippi, told CNN in November. “And I don’t think the American people are going to conclude that it is.”

Trump is no fan of this tactic, however, as he still maintains that there was no quid pro quo at the base of the matter. “False stories are being reported that a few Republican Senators are saying that President Trump may have done a quid pro quo, but it doesn’t matter, there is nothing wrong with that, it is not an impeachable event,” the President tweeted on Nov. 4. “Perhaps so, but read the transcript, there is no quid pro quo!”

The 2010 manifesto pledge was actually to “amend the 1972 European Communities Act so that any proposed future Treaty that transferred areas of power, or competences, would be subject to a referendum – a ‘referendum lock’”. My bad, sorry Dave.

And in fact, the Liberal Democrats’ manifesto did include a commitment to an in/out referendum on the EU, but only if a British government signs up for “fundamental change in the relationship between the UK and the EU”, including joining the Euro.   

But the really rather big thing that I missed, that just sort of passed me by because of all the excitement of #indyref1 in Scotland at the time was the 2014 European elections. In 2014, UKIP won the European elections in the UK, with 24 seats to Labour’s 20 and the Conservatives’ 19. Last time (in 2009), the Conservatives won as many as the other two put together (26 v 13 and 13).

Know how I’m always going about how Scotland isn’t the cool, internationalist socially-liberal, economically left-wing paradise it kids on it is? Well, in the first example of many, even the Glorious People’s Republic of Haggisland elected a UKIP MEP (Member of the European Parliament) in 2014: the baffling David Coburn (see previous and below caveat re: legit reasons for not being keen on the EU that may have prompted folk for vote for him), alongside two Labour MEPs, two SNP MEPs, and one Conservative MEP. 

It’s worth noting that Labour gained seats in this election. Under David Miliband, Labour increased their percentage of votes by almost as much as UKIP (around 10%) and they also won the most number of votes in the English local authority elections held the same day. Although only about a third of the people eligible to vote actually voted, and a lot of people who voted Lib Dem in 2010 had pretty much abandoned the party by this point, it’s a nice wee stat to keep on hand when anyone says that Labour has to do more to appeal to UKIP voters.

Anyway, that 2014 European election, although overshadowed up here by all the flag waving, seemed to be the final straw for the Conservative Party. This led to the 2015 manifesto commitment (I checked this time) for “the British people – not politicians – to have their say... over whether we should stay in or leave the EU, with an in-out referendum by the end of 2017″.

And so, in June 2016, the entire UK is asked to vote on remaining or leaving the EU basically because the Tories were having a tiff with themselves. A tiny number of very loud, very entitled people managed to be annoying enough that we literally had a referendum to try and get them to shut up.

Now, we talked before about how there are some totally legitimate, reasonable and not-racist reasons for opposing the EU. A really good example of this is in Scotland, where the fishing industry has had a long standing scepticism about the EU. It’s based on criticism of a EU rule called the Common Fisheries Policy that decides who can fish what kind of fish (and how much fish), and where. The EU policy is meant to protect the sustainability of fishing for the future (i.e. stopping someone accidentally catching all the fish, and there being none left), ensure all EU countries share their fish/fishing waters (e.g. Spain can’t stop Portgual fishing off its coasts), and ensure that fishing is carried out in a relatively environmentally friendly way (i.e. don’t throw loads of dead fish or gross chemicals back in the sea). However, the Scottish fishing industry says that in practice, the policy means that Scotland does not get a fair share of its own fishing waters, and that they love the environment as much as the next guy but that following the rules is cripplingly expensive. This means that people lose their jobs, or put up with terrible working conditions to make up for the policy costs, and/or that the price of a fish supper goes way up. See? Totes legit, not racist. Essentially about jobs and fish suppers.

That is not why the Government held this referendum.

Another totally legitimate, reasonable and not-racist reason for opposing the EU is that some of the trade deals the EU negotiates look like they might damage workers rights in the EU. Criticism of an agreement called TTIP ( which stands for Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership, not just me spelling T in the Park wrong) between the US and the EU suggests it’ll mean that companies will be able to sue governments if their health and safety or environmental rules are seen to affect that company’s profit. Leaving the EU could be a way to ensure companies don’t have that power, and have to respect things like national minimum wage and trade union membership.See? Again, totes legit, not racist. 

That is not why the Government held this referendum.

The Government held this referendum to stitch together its Frankenstein’s monster of a party for a bit longer. The driving force behind all the decisions leading to this referendum was internal party politics. Whatever the fallout is (and we still don’t know because they literally didn’t even consider the possibility it might happen so didn’t draft any plan), it’s being imposed on 64 million people as a result of the Conservative Party playing chicken. With itself. Except we’re the ones who somehow get run over. And that’s partly why Brexit makes me grumpy. 

I swear I’ll try and get onto Scottish independence at some point.
