member: kang daniel (ft. ong seongwu) genre: angst, fluff summary: daniel graduated from university in canada and came back to korea only to find out you have another best friend. a/n: this is my attempt of writing when i’m not forced to. i’m going on a clean slate... also, i’m writing for a female reader... i’m sorry! i usually try to make my stories gender neutral as possible. & holy fuck.... ? ?? ? this is 2.9k words. im shook....... also, HAPPY LATE BIRTHDAY TO BABY BOY, KANG DANIEL. i meant to post this yesterday but... this kept getting longer and longer... so....
when he walked through the door of his old house for the first time, he took in the smell of cats and his favorite foods lingering in the air and immediately went off to find his two kids.
“i swear you love them more than you love me,” his mother shook her head while smiling to herself as she went straight into the kitchen to heat up his dinner she was preparing all day.
“that’s not true,” he pouted as he followed her into the kitchen, reaching out to hug her by the waist, “you’re my favorite.”
“you say that like you’re not going to seoul next week.”
“i’m going to see y/n, mom.”
“are you two finally dating?” she stopped what she was doing to look at him.
she could tell when he was lying always. he was never really good at it especially that time in middle school when he hid his first cat in his room because he was scared his dad wouldn’t let him keep him. he kept meowing throughout the day to coverup for his cute little stray, eventually his mom found the poor thing in his underwear drawer.
daniel furrowed his brow and let go of his mom. “we’re just friends. i’m going to see her as my friend. how many time do i have to tell you?” he asked her.
“i’ve seen you put your arm around her and pull her even closer to you. daniel, that’s a move!” she pointed out as she imitated how he would pull you closer to him with the air.
“oh my god, mom. that’s not what i do!”
“you so do it,” she said as she continued to mimic her own son, “kiddo, let’s go to the movies.”
“mom!”
daniel was at seoul station with a piece of paper that had your address that he got from your mother who still lived in busan and a container of kimchi she wanted to get delivered to you.
you had no idea he was coming to seoul. you didn’t even know that he was in the country. so when you started getting more frequent kakao message from him in the daytime, you got slightly suspicious but didn’t think too much on it.
he was only a block away when he saw you walking with another guy into the convenience store, smiling and laughing. you know that feeling when you drop from the peak of a rollercoaster? daniel was feeling that in his stomach. it was the longest drop.
his feet started moving and he ended up following the two of you in, only to be welcomed with the sounds of the both of you giggling with each other. it oddly irked him.
“yah, ong seongwu, i’m not buying you all of that. you said you just wanted ramen. put those down,” your hands playfully hit his arm.
“and you said your treat! you’ve known me for four years and you still think i won’t take that for granted,” the guy daniel identified as seongwu said, “come on, these cheese chips are your favorite too!”
but another thing was going on his mind... four years. you’ve known him for four years and he hasn’t even heard of that name before. you haven’t mentioned anything about an ‘ong seongwu’ to him. who was he? and cheese chips aren’t your favorite chips! (wait, were they?)
“yah, y/n,” daniel sounded angrier than he intended to be. how he calls your name should be endearing and it always was. so when you heard your name being called out, the last person you thought it’d be was daniel.
you turned to see an almost unrecognizable figure. if it wasn’t for those lips and the tiny little mole under his right eye, you probably would’ve thought he was a stranger.
a smile grew on your face as you stuffed the things you had in your hands to ong, who complained under his breathe, as you rushed up to daniel, who really didn’t look so happy right now, to crush him in your arms.
his expression softened as he patted your hair with his free hand. you had such a childish expression on your face as you dove into his chest. he was glad he wasn’t the only one who missed the other.
when you pulled away just to hit his chest, he looked down at you and got a better look. you were different too. your complexion was so beautiful. your braces were off. you were wearing... makeup? a skirt? suddenly, he’s pissed again.
daniel’s eyes moved from you to your friend who was watching the exchange between you and him. he smiled at daniel, but daniel dully moved his eyes back to you, who was hitting him for surprising you.
“how did you know i was here? wait.... did i accept you on that app? find my friends? i totally didn’t mean to do that,” you said as you took out your phone to check.
“no, your mom gave me your address,” he answered then quickly shifted the subject, “who’s that? your boyfriend?”
it was like reflect for you to laugh at the accusation. “are you kidding me?” you shook your head, “no, he’s ong.”
daniel wasn’t as amused as you were.
“what’s that supposed to mean?”
you heard the hint of annoyance this time and you shut your lips to stop yourself from laughing as you looked up at him.
“he’s just a friend. we were hanging out at my apartment and got fam––”
“a boy? at your apartment?” daniel was completely outraged.
you were taken back by how daniel was acting. he never reacted such a way before. at least, not towards you. you’ve seen him argue with other kids in class back in high school for bullying, or when he’s watching a tv show or movie and he just gets frustrated at the main character, but never towards you.
“it’s not a big deal. it’s not like you haven’t slept over my house before,” you folded your arms and squinted your eyes at him.
“i’m different. i’m your best friend,” he pointed to himself.
“and so is he,” you fought back, “we met at freshman year orientation and been friends since.”
“why didn’t you tell me about him?” his brows furrowed and as seconds went by he was just anxious to hear your answer.
“maybe because you never had time,” your voice softened and your eyes wavered elsewhere, “we’d be on the phone for what? two minutes before you had to finish an online exam or hang out with your new canadian friends.”
“that’s not fair––”
“no, it’s not. you’re allowed to have new friends and i’m not? it really isn’t. what were you expecting me to do? wait for you? because you know, i did. i came back to busan every break i had because i thought you would come home and visit. instead, i kept your mom and your cats company, which i don’t mind. and do you know why?” your eyes beamed at him.
daniel couldn’t meet your eyes though. you were right. he hasn’t been there for you and never did come back to korea for any of his school breaks.
you continued after you figured he was going to keep up with his silence, “because we all had a little bit in common, daniel. we missed you.”
letting out a big sigh, you felt your lips quivering for letting out some of your thoughts you had since he was gone.
“i’m guessing you were planning to stay in seoul for a few days... and i’m guessing you were planning to stay at my place,” you said as you noticed his bags and the container of kimchi.
“yeah, but... i can find another place to stay,” daniel mumbled.
you reached for the container of kimchi he had in his hand and pressed your lips together. “no, i can’t let you do that. you can stay at my place,” you forced a smile at him.
“but aren’t you mad at me?”
“yeah, but you’re still my best friend.”
why did that word leave a bad after taste on your tongue?
the three of you guys walked back together with a few bags of junk food and ice cream in your mouths. you introduced the two as you were both on your way back to the apartment.
“daniel, this is seongwu. ong, this is––”
“don’t tell me. the infamous busan friend, kang daniel,” seongwu finished your sentence.
“best friend,” daniel corrected him.
“right,” seongwu didn’t intend to but he disregarded daniel’s little correction.
daniel peeked over at seongwu and shook his head, unimpressed. the guy seemed like a total douche bag to him and he really doesn’t get how you ended up becoming friends with some third rate.
“how do you even know about me?” daniel asked.
“who else would’ve told me?” he laughed in return.
“sorry, i spilled a little.”
“also ranted a lot,” seongwu added.
“ong,” you glared at him and softened your eyes back at daniel.
“rant?” daniel repeated.
you bit your lip as you elbowed ong, hoping daniel wouldn’t notice. he noticed.
“i was kind of mad you never came back to see your parents. they were kind of disappointed that you didn’t intend to come back,” you explained.
“and she––” seongwu was going to add more to what you were going to say only for you to step on his foot.
“i swear if you say another word, i’m eating all the ramen,” you threatened.
daniel watched how the two of you interacted and his eyes started to darkened. he felt that he shouldn’t be there, that he was the third wheel, that he was out of place.
after getting to your apartment, daniel went for the shower while you and ong started boiling the water for the ramen. daniel was trying to get his head wrapped around the idea of you having other friends. you were right. he was being unfair.
what was he expecting? you to be the same person he left? no, he shouldn’t be because he wasn’t exactly the same either. what else? for you to be alone waiting for him? he never would want you to hold yourself back because of him. but when he left the bathroom freshly cleaned, those reasoning thoughts were aggressively tossed to the side when he saw you and seongwu together again.
he was dabbing your top with a wet paper towel really close to your chest. daniel’s instincts kicked in and he pulled seongwu off of you.
“what the hell are you doing?” daniel roared.
“wait, daniel, relax. he spilled ramen on me. it’s not a big deal,” you defended him and got in between the two boys.
“can we talk?” daniel gritted his teeth as he looked down on you.
you sighed and excused yourself with daniel to your bedroom. you were evidently mad as you slammed the door behind you.
“can you please explain your behavior? you’re acting like a child tonight!” you yelled.
“he was staring at your chest!” he argued.
“and that’s where the proximity of the stain was. it’s not a––”
“i swear if you say it’s not a big deal one more time, my head is going to explode.”
“maybe you should’ve gotten another place to stay. like what happened to you in canada that made you this way? you never had this temper before,” you shook your head.
daniel shut his eyes as he licked his lips, pondering if what he was thinking was what he should be saying, but his mouth seemed like it had a mind of its own when he let the next two sentences slip out.
“i don’t think it was canada that made me this way. i think it was you.”
you peered your eyes at him, figuring out what he meant by that. you? what did you do?
“are you trying to blame me?” you were offended.
“y/n, i’m saying i’m jealous!” he shouted, “i’m not used to seeing you being so close with other guys. at least, someone that isn’t me. we were always together. we were always telling each other stuff. we were best friends, y/n, and i don’t like seeing someone else knowing you better than me.”
you stiffened at his words. if you didn’t know any better, he liked you, but it’s a weird thing to think about: kang daniel, best friend since forever, liking you. you swallowed because you thought it would help the stuck words go down your throat.
“he doesn’t,” you paused, “...know me better than you.”
“it doesn’t feel like it,” he grunted as he seated himself on your bed, “i haven’t been there for you, and you know, he has.”
“can you... not make it sound like you’re not going to be around anymore?” you nervously clenched your hands at the end of your shirt and sat yourself beside him, “i’m not trying to lose you again. so don’t try to send me away.”
now it sounded like you liked him, but daniel was too dense to catch that. thank god if you were trying to hide your feelings from him. if you had feelings for him.
you wrapped your arms around his waist and leaned yourself on him.
“i let you go the first time. i trusted you to come back to me, so stay,” you told him.
four years ago, you were on your way with daniel and his mom to gimhae international airport. his mom was driving while you and him were sitting in the back, holding hands and talking like he wasn’t going to be gone.
“you should’ve seen minhyun when i passed the ball to him. his face was hilarious. he totally didn’t see it coming,” you laughed as you told him a story from beach hangout a few days ago. daniel couldn’t go because he had to pack his things and spend a mother and son date day.
“i swear that guy seems so arrogant at first but he’s actually an idiot,” he laughed along with you.
“he is one and––”
“kids, do you mind getting off first and taking the luggage out from the trunk? i gotta find parking,” his mom interrupted and the two of you didn’t seem as bright anymore.
“oh, yeah sure!” you forced a smile as you let go of daniel’s hand to get out of the car.
you waited in line with him for him to check in his bags as his mom parked the car. neither of you said anything and you were dying from the silence. you really wanted to be happy for him. you just couldn’t think of the right words or force yourself to smile genuinely.
“i can’t believe it’s happening already,” daniel broke the silence, “i’m going to canada for school.”
your fingers twitched when he said that. it was happening. he was leaving, and truthfully, you were sad. you didn’t want him to leave. hell, you were upset when he applied to a canadian school without telling you. he never told you that he wanted to go to school in canada.
“i can’t either,” there was no cheeriness to your voice even if you tried. it was hard. he was making it hard for you. he was going to be happy out there while you were in going to be in the same spot.
“don’t look like that,” he nudged your arm playfully but you really weren’t in the mood.
“what am i supposed to look when you’re going to be away? happy that you’re not gonna be around anymore? are you going to come back for the breaks? am i going to have to wait for four years?” you hid your face behind your hands because you didn’t want him to see you cry even if he’s seen it plenty of times. but this time, it was because of him you were crying.
“y/n,” he held onto your wrist to pull your hand down, but you weren’t budging so instead, he pulled you into his chest so no one else had to see you crying, “it’s okay. i’ll be back soon.”
you peeked at his face from his chest, “really?”
he laughed at how innocent you were.
“yeah, and we’re going to be the same as always.”
then you smiled because daniel was so confident in his words and you believed him.
“knock, knock,” seongwu peeked his head through the door, “the ramen is going to be cold, so if you don’t eat it now, i’ll eat all of it in one go.”
as soon as you let go to daniel’s waist, he pulled you back into his chest. “go ahead. if anything, we can go for another run to the convenience store,” daniel sent seongwu away.
“daniel?” you looked up at him like how you did four years ago at the airport.
“there’s really nothing i can do for you to drop that guy?” daniel frowned as he looked back down at you.
you laughed and shook your head, “no, he’s as much as my best friend as you are.”
“then can we be something else?” he raised his brow.
suddenly, your playful demeanor washed away as you looked back at him.
“like what?” you asked him slowly and cautiously.
he softly smiled down at you and doesn’t say anything. nothing at all. and when you were about to ask him again, you felt his warm lips pressed against your forehead and him muttering the word “something”.
