hello! as someone reading the books, i'm curious to hear what your favorite things about rand are?

MY FAVORITE THINGS ABOUT RAND?? OK LET'S SEE:

As a whole I would say that his arc, overall, is really one of the best things that I have ever read. (including Sando's books even though there are inconsistences but where Rand is concerned, I gobble up ALL content). But if you want specifics I'll throw them down below.

It's the beginning of his story. How innocent and young he is. He feels like a real person who is beginning his journey reluctantly. Going back on a reread, you really see that his later nuances are all there, albeit a lot calmer, smaller.

I like his relationships with the other characters. Especially the mains. These relationships are absolutely fleshed out and his thinking towards them is realistic and very caring.

He cares about people. Not only about everyone, hence his 'mission' of sorts. But he cares about his friends, his family. It's so heartbreaking.

I like his flaws. There are quite a lot. His stubbornness and how he seems incapable of letting people help him. He has some shades of denial and also arrogance as time goes on. But reading it, it's like real shades of a person, not at all like something that's just there to be there.

I like seeing this world through his eyes. His descriptions of people/places/things are way different than other people. He's a lot more wistful as time goes on, mournful even.

The take on mental health is very raw, sorrowful, real. Especially given that it's a world where help doesn't really exist and neither does the knowledge of it, makes it feel a lot more like a gut punch. After reading about Robert Jordan's own experiences with war and mental health really gives you insight into what he was doing here.

I like his being willing to sacrifice for the world itself in the name of who and what he is. Even if he does try running from it, even if he does try to be numb in regards to it.

I like the way his relationship with the power is very relatable and open to interpretation and everything, based on who is reading it.

And, lastly (although there's probably more lol), I like the different shades of his character. There isn't just light there. He's light and dark. He knows that he's on a precipice for his very mind and it reads so raw.

THERE'S PROBBALY MORE. I love Rand al'Thor so very much. He really is everything to me and THE character of all time. I'm kind of jealous of you that you're reading them for the first time (I think?). But it's quite the journey and another shred of advice would be NOT TO LOOK ONLINE if you don't want spoilers AND don't let other people's opinions sway you while reading.
