Summary: It was nearly a week after they had taken Kings Landing, mere days since his mother's coronation when Jace learned the truth about the fate of his uncle Aemond.

Jace was devastated when they received the news of his grandsire's death on Dragonstone. It shouldn't have been a surprise, the King had already looked like a walking corpse during the hearing and the disastrous dinner that followed. Still the news hit hard, especially when the announcement was accompanied by the even more shocking news that the small council had fabricated a lie that Viserys had named his uncle Aegon as heir to the throne on his deathbed and they crowned him as King. 

Not only was the King dead but his mother had her rightful throne usurped, her inheritance stolen and they had no time to mourn, no time to grieve. They could waste no time and Jace and his brother Luke were sent out immediately to gather allies for her cause.

Jace was focused during his negotiations with his mothers cousin, the Lady Jayne Arryn of the Vale. She was cunning, intelligent and was able to pull a promise of protection in the form of a dragon in exchange for her armies.

He was still riding the confidence from his success as he rode Vermax north, to Winterfell to treat with Lord Cregan Stark.

Jace felt an immediate kinship with the Lord of Winterfell, the weeks he spent there deepening that kinship into a bond of true friendship that Jacaerys hoped would last into his own reign. 

Allies secured Jace returned home to Dragonstone where he discouvered that his younger brother Luke had failed in hie own mission to convince the Baratheons to honour their oaths and declare for their mother. They had already received and accepted a more lucrative offer from The Dowager Queen before the young prince had even arrived.

It was a blow but his mother was not deterred from her path to reclaim her throne.

From that point the war moved slowly as both sides were determined to not send dragons so instead send men and ravens to claim more and more ground for themselves.

The effort looked to be heavily favouring his mother, more and more houses declared for Rhaenyra without force while they heard tales of the blue dragon Tessarion paying visits to the castles and fortresses declaring for the usurper.

It was these reports that made Jace realize that it was only Tessarion being used to sway people to the greens. It made sense that Aegon would not be flying out on Sunfyre but Vhagar, the biggest dragon in the land, had only been spotted around Kings Landing but she wasn't patrolling, she was roaming, hunting, and had no visible rider.

They sent spies into Kings Landing and while Jace had not been privy to the entirety of the report his mother and Daemon had informed them afterwards that Aemond would not be a threat, that they only needed to confront Sunfyre and Tesserion on the battlefield. 

The decision to finally use dragons came with a heavy heart but his mother knew it was the best course of action and would result in the least amount of lives lost.

Jace begged his mother to allow him and his siblings to join them in the skies and after days of negotiating he and Vermax joined Syrax, Caraxes and Meleys in the skies above Kings Landing, only Aegon atop Sunfyre rising to oppose them.

The fight was over quickly and while his mother had hoped to spare Aegons life, her brother was a pawn, nothing more, he died from his wounds when Sunfyre fell from the sky, broken and burned. Seeing their King fall the rest of the green army surrendered and Rhaenyra was able to take the city without further battle or needless bloodshed. The only deaths were the men of the small council who had orchestrated the treasonous plan to put his uncle on the throne over his mother. 

The Dowager Queen, his Aunt Helaena and her children were spared, confined to their chambers, but spared. To prevent an issue in the future Aegon's omega twins Jaehaera and Jaehaerys were betrothed to his alpha younger brothers Aegon and Viserys. It would be many years until they could be married but the blending of their two families would help to heal the rift in the kingdom.

It was nearly a week after they had taken Kings Landing, mere days since his mother's coronation when Jace learned the truth about the fate of his uncle Aemond. 

They were still trying to sort out the mess of loyalties within the keep. Who was genuinely a traitor or who had simply been cowards, too afraid to stand their ground and declare for Rhaenrya in the heart of treason. It was during the gathering of all this information that Jace learned of the scuffle in the streets between the Targaryen princes and the Kingsguard. The accusations which were levied against Aemond and his subsequent imprisonment.

Jace was desperate to know the truth of the matter, had Aemond actually been a black sympathizer all along or had he made a move for the throne himself? 

He remembered wishing to be betrothed to his alpha uncle when they were children, how they would whisper of their life together, before the scuffle which cost Aemond his eye and his mother whisked them away to live on Dragonstone. 

Jace desperately needed to know the truth of his uncle's actions and so he waited until the hour was late enough he would not be missed and snuck off to see him.

It was not Jace’s smartest decision. He was supposed to be locking himself away and building his nest to prepare for his heat but he couldn't resist seeing his uncle for himself. 

He crept through the silent halls, slipping past guards and the occasional member of the household staff to the wing where his uncle was being kept. 

He was just coming to a stop in front of the heavy wooden door when he smelled it. The thick, heavy smell of Alpha about to go into rut, the smell of smoke and leather overwhelming his senses and before he knew it the door was open and he was in the cell.
