Kajol commemorated the 25th anniversary of her 1997 movie Gupt and dressed to the nines for the occasion. Kajol wore a vibrant top with one shoulder and wrap elements close to the shoulders that fell to a long sleeve. The shirt had intricate geometric patterns printed on it in the colours orange, white, black, and blue. Kajol finished off her ensemble for the day with a pair of wide-legged, high-waisted black satin pants. At the waist of the pants was a golden buckle accent.
“Kicking butt and taking names 25 years later at the Gupt screening,” Kajol wrote. She also shared a picture of the cake with snippets from the film printed on it.
Golden danglers helped Kajol complete the style she was going for. The actor opted to maintain the playful atmosphere by wearing a little top bun and leaving the rest of her hair open in straight locks. Kajol chose a natural makeup look to go with her outfit and the special occasion. She selected a nude lipstick shade, nude eyeshadow, black eyeliner, black kohl, mascara-coated eyelashes, drawn eyebrows, and contoured cheekbones.
The 1997 movie Gupt was a huge hit at the box office. Gupt debuted to favourable reviews and starred Kajol, Bobby Deol, Manisha Koirala, and Om Puri in key parts. Kajol became the first woman in Filmfare history to get the award for Best Performance in a Negative Role.

12 Best Performances By Surekha Sikri That Prove She Is An Actor Par Excellence
A three-time National Film Award Winner, star of Indian Soap Operas, and Hindi theatre veteran, Surekha Sikri is undoubtedly one of the finest actors we have. Her latest performance in Badhaai ho has made us realize and made this very clear that the roles she opts for are actually written for her only. The way she does justice to each one of the roles is really remarkable. She is born on 19 April 1945 in New Delhi, British India. She belongs to Uttar Pradesh and she spent her childhood in Almora and Nainital. She also attended NSD. When I first heard about her, she is already in limelight due to her famous Dadisa’s role in the famous soap opera Balika Vadhu. She is always in limelight due to her hard-hitting characters and realistic acting. Some examples of her stellar performances are-
Surekha Sikri made her film debut in Kissa Kursi Ka (1978), with the role of Meera. Though her character wasn’t on the right side, she succeeded in making her impression on the audience.
Her supporting role as Rajo in Tamas (1988) stayed in people’s hearts forever. The movie is based on Bhisham Sahni’s novel, which made her win her First National Film Award for Best Supporting Actress. This shows the heart-wrenching effects on people during the partition.
Her performance in Salim Langde Pe Mat Ro (1989) was unbelievable because the role she played in the movie was way far from her age in real life. And she portrayed the character really well. The movie explores the effects of Hindutva extremism on minor communities. The movie won two national film awards.
Surekha’s role as Radha in a TV series Banegi Apni Baat (1993) remains one of Indian TV history’s most remarkable characters. The show was based on the class divide, gender differences.
The role of Fayyuzi in the first part of the Muslim Trilogy that is Mammo in 1994 whose director was Shyam Benegal, made Surekha Sikri win her second National Film Award. She was the protagonist’s legal guardian, who comes in an encounter with her long-lost sister, Mammo unexpectedly. Her role and character had a perfect balance of warmth and emotions.
In Kirdaar: Rehman Ke Joote, TV Series (1993-1995), Surekha Sikri managed really well to hold her performance and show her astonishing acting skills. Despite having Om Puri and Irfan Khan kind of stupendous actors in the series, she managed to get her part of fame. It was directed by Gulzar, which involves various short stories by Indian writers.
Surekha played the role of Ittan Bai in Sardari Begum (1996) was the second part of Shyam Benegal’s trilogy. Though the role was very brief, she still succeeded to make the place in the audience’s heart with her brilliant acting as always.
Hari Bhari (2000) was a collaboration of Surekha Sikri and Shyam Benegal to give life to his story of 5 women and their struggles with reproductive rights. Surekha has played the role of the eldest in the family, which shows the journey of life she has lived to the life of her granddaughter if the customs and traditions won’t change.
The final part of Benegal’s trilogy, made Surekha repeat her role as Fayyuzi in Zubeidaa (2001). With her performance in Zubeidaa, she proved again how finely she is seasoned with acting skills.
Surekha Sikri is an alumnus of NSD and she has continued acting throughout her career. Her act in the play Parindon Ki Mehfil was based on the 12th century Persian Poem written by Farududdin Attar, “Mantiq-Ut-Tayr”. Her acting was so brilliant in the play that people still remember her performance. Acting is in her blood. It's like she can act on anything at any time.
In Mr. and Mrs. Iyer (2002), she just had 2 scenes in the entire movie, but still, her anguish role was on point, and she was really appreciated for her fantastic acting skills.
Star Bestsellers’ Kabaad, TV Series (1999-2000), is one of the best tales of Star Bestsellers. It starred Surekha Sikri and Raghubir Yadav, which shows how a simple conversation between two people from completely different backgrounds curbs their loneliness. And undoubtedly, her performance was remarkable which made the simple story worth remembering for a lifetime.

'Tumhari Amrita is a timeless play. It ran for 24 years and you can still interpret and reinterpret it as many times as you want. I have seen Farooq Shaikh, Shabana Azmi and Om Puri being part of. The concept of “Love Letters” was very interesting. I was the head of the Prithvi Theatre and this play is a tribute to late Jennifer Kapoor (Actress, wife of the charming Indian actor Shashi Kapoor). ”In a performance like 'Tumhari Amrita', “the audience becomes pivotal to the play”, added Feroz Khan, the much acclaimed director.

It was thenthat I found, that Tumhari Amrita was an adaptationof LoveLetters, a play by Mr A R Gurney.There was a lot of material on Love Letters, some video snippets and showtimings even. Only the shows were not in my part of the world. But the video snippetsreminded me of a line by Ms Azmi inTumhari Amrita I saw on TV. It was a very short glimpse of onescene in some programme on Ms Azmi. ' Us angan ke kone meek bargat ka perh tha', if I remember correctly. Herreminiscent happy voice haunted me to read theEnglish play. If anyone can tell me more about Tumhari Amrita, the book or theplay, I will remain ever grateful.
Now more about Love Letters. I quote about the play from thebook.
' This is a play or rather a sort of play, which needs no theater,no lengthy rehearsal, no special set, no memorization of lines, and nocommitment from its two actors beyond the night of performance. It is designedsimply to be read aloud by an actor and an actress of roughly the same age,sitting side by side at a table, in front of a group of people of any size. The actor might wear adark grey suit, the actress a simple expensive looking dress. In a more formalproduction, the table and chairs might be reasonably elegant English antiques,and the actors area may be isolated against a dark background by bright focused lights. In performance the piece would seem to work best if the actorsdidn't look at each other until the very end, when Melissa might watch Andy ashe reads his final letter. They listen eagerly and attentively to each otheralong the way, however, much as we might listen to an urgent voice on a one-way radio. comingfrom far, far away.'
All through the 55 pages of thedrama and for a considerable time thereafter, I remained transfixed on thelives of Andy and Melissa. I shared their childhood affection, their teenageromance and, their quarrels, their hide and seek uneasiness in adulthood and their love, which Andy couldadmit only after her death.
Andy's last letter is arevelation. He summarizes his entire life in a tragic canvass of theinnumerable moments where he and Melissa came together and went away indifferent directions throughout their lives. I quote from the concluding partof the play where he writes to her mother after Melissa's death and we hearMelissa's soul suffering from the pain of his admissions.
Andy : Dear Mrs Gardener, I thinkthe first letter I ever wrote was to you, accepting an invitation for Melissa'sbirthday party. Now I am writing you again about her death. I wish to say a few things on paper Icouldn't say at her funeral, both when I spoke, and when you and I talkedafterward. As you may know, Melissa and I managed to keep in touch witheach other most of our lives, primarily through letters. Even now, as I writethis letter to you, I feel I'm writing also to her.
Melissa : Ah, you are inyour element now, Andy....
Andy : We had a complicatedrelationship, she and I, all our lives. We went in very different directions.But somehow, over those years, I think we managed to give something to each other. Melissa expressed allthe dangerous and rebellious feelings I never dared admit to.....
Melissa : Now he tells me....
Andy : And I like to think I gaveher some sense of balance ......
Melissa : BALANCE ? Ohhell, I give up. Have it your way, Andy ; balance!

The format of the play is unique.It takes you through fifty years of their lives, their journey and theirescapades as they grow up and try to live without each other. Their families,though never appearing in person, are ever visible in the background. Melissawrites less. She is more action oriented. But she portrays Andy in the fewlines she pens. The conversation is about her play Dance Like A Man, which opened in 1995, and 21 years later, shows no signs of shutting down. It has had more than 500 shows in India and abroad, and still fills up the auditorium every time it is performed.
There are very few English and Hindi plays that have achieved such longevity. Marathi and Gujarati plays hit three digits faster, sometimes in a matter of months, because of multiple shows running every day of the week. Big-ticket English theatre is mostly a weekend recreational activity.
Dance Like A Man, written by Mahesh Dattani, is a complex story of ambition and the pursuit of excellence in the world of classical dance. It also encompasses gender discrimination, father-son tug-of-war, and the fraught relation between a dancer couple, when one of them has to sacrifice a promising career to allow the other to grow. Imaginatively designed and structured in a flashback-flash forward narrative, the play has not become outdated simply because the emotions of control, envy, greed, guilt and, of course, love are not bound by time and culture.
Dubey says the play has been appreciated wherever it has been performed in the world because audiences feel so close to the story. Even today, in spite of a progressive veneer, a father would baulk at his son taking up the supposedly effeminate dance career. For women, the problem of sustaining a high-pressure performing arts schedule after marriage and motherhood persists.
“But,” said Dubey, “all the appreciation and acclaim notwithstanding, a play survives because those who are involved with it want to keep performing it.” Joy Sengupta and Lillete Dubey have been acting in Dance Like A Man from the start. Vijay Crishna took over from Ravi Dubey and Suchitra Pillai from Shivani Wazir when Dubey and her group Prime Time moved from Delhi to Mumbai. “All of us want to continue with it, and audiences just don’t seem to tire of it. It’s difficult to say why this play and not another has had a long life, but somehow everything has come together to make this one popular, and I would say the powerful script and its emotional content have a lot to do with it.”

The Hindustani one-man revue, Babban Khan’s Adrak Ke Panje, that ran from 1965 to 2001, was in the Guinness Book of Records in 1984 as the play with the highest number of performances. When it closed down it had completed an astounding 10,180 shows. The play about a man with a very large family, living off his wits and trying to dodge his many creditors made a case for family planning. Over the years Babban Khan kept making changes to incorporate contemporary references and attracted audiences in over sixty countries.
In Mumbai, however, the record for the longest-running Hindi play is held by Ank’s Hai Mera Dil, that opened in 1979 and has completed over 1,200 shows. Ranbir Singh’s adaptation of the English play Send Me No Flowers, by Julius Epstein Norman Barasch, was directed by Dinesh Thakur, who also played the lead role of a hypochondriac who believes he is going to die and wants to find a husband for his wife before he departs. The misunderstandings created are a cause of such hilarity that for forty years audiences are flocking to it, some of them more than once. After Thakur’s death in 2012, his wife Preeta Mathur, who plays the bewildered spouse in the play, has kept the production running, with another Ank actor Aman Gupta taking on the role of the whiny protagonist.
“The play has worked, I think, because of its simplicity,” said Mathur. “All of us on stage are so normal that the audience feels it is looking through the window of their neighbour’s drawing room. Also, a serious subject of the fear of death has been dealt with in a humorous manner and that appeals to people. We have had people come up to us after the show and say, they suffered from hypochondria, and after watching the play, they realised how foolish they were and how much their behaviour must have affected their family.”
Besides these, two other productions that have run for about a quarter of a century are based on AR Gurney’s Love Letters, about a man and a woman keeping a friendship going over many tumultuous years, through an exchange of letters. Both Rahul daCunha’s production starring Rajit Kapur and Shernaz Patel and Feroz Khan’s Tumhari Amrita, beautifully adapted by Javed Siddiqi, and starring Shabana Azmi with Farooq Shaikh, opened in 1992. The former has had about 600 shows and the latter more than 400. Love Letters is still running, with the two actors none the worse for the wear, but Tumhari Amrita had to close because Shaikh passed away in 2013. Feroz Khan intends to revive it as soon as he can find actors talented and charismatic enough to match the original brilliant duo.
“I believe the play has a lot of life left in it,” said Khan, who admits that the play’s huge success in India and overseas took him by surprise because it was such a spare production, with the two actors just sitting behind desks reading letters. But those letters encapsulated the country’s history and the enduring love of Amrita and Zulfi that transcended social and temperamental barriers.
“It is a play of words and nobody can remain immune to the emotions those words evoke,” said Khan, who hits upon where the eternal appeal of these all-time favourite plays lies – words.

Dabangg 2010 Hindi short story
Dabangg is a Hindi film released in 2010. The film is directed by Abhinav Kashyap and produced by Arbaaz Khan and Malaika Aurora. The film stars Salman Khan, Arbaaz Khan, Sonakshi Sinha, Om Puri, Dimple Kapadia, Binod Khanna, Anupam Kher and Sonu Sood in the lead roles. It was the first film to be sponsored by Arbaaz and directed by Abhinav Kashyap. In the film, co-producer Malaika Aurora herself dances to a dance performance.
The film is based on the story of Chulbul Pandey, a corrupt and fearless police officer from Uttar Pradesh. Scenes of the film were shot mainly in the city of Yai in Maharashtra and in the United Arab Emirates. On September 10, 2010 (Eid), the film was released in about 2,100 theaters. The film grossed Rs 2.15 billion and was a huge success at the box office. It won the National Award for Best Hindi Film and won Filmfare Awards in six categories. The remake of the film was later released in Tamil and Telugu. His next film, Dabangg-2, was released in 2012.

Remembering character actor Nana Palsikar on his 34th death anniversary. Nana Palsikar (1907 – 1 June 1984) was an Indian film actor, who appeared in over 80 Hindi films. He made his film debut in 1935 with Dhuwandhar, and went on to play character roles in both Hindi mainstream and arthouse films. He was also cast in small parts in a few international productions such as Maya (1966), The Guru (1969), and Gandhi (1982). Palsikar was awarded the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor twice, in 1962 and 1965. He was recognised with an award in the same category by the Bengal Film Journalists’ Association in 1965. Palsikar made his first film appearance in 1935 along with Leela Chitnis in Sumumar Chatterjee’s Dhuwandhar. He appeared in two more films in this decade, Kandan and Durga (1939), both of which were produced under the Bombay Talkies production house and were the two final films directed by German director Franz Osten. After a long break of 14 years, between which he appeared only in one film Bahurani, (1940), he returned to the screen in Bimal Roy’s 1953 picture Do Bigha Zamin (Two Acres of Land), in which he played Dhangu Maheto, alongside actors such as Balraj Sahni and Nirupa Roy. The film was a major critical success and won several national and international honours. He followed it with supporting roles in other successful films of this decade, such as V. Shantaram’s Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baaje, Bimal Roy’s Devdas, Raj Kapoor’s Shree 420, Sombhu Mitra’s Jagte Raho and Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s Anari. In 1960 Palsikar appeared in Kanoon, a courtroom drama involving a murder case. Directed by B. R. Chopra, the film saw Palsikar playing Kaalia, a petty thief who is caught and charged with murder for no fault of his own. Palsikar’s performance earned him his first Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor. In a retrospective review in 2009, The Hindu noted, “the star of the second half is Nana Palsikar, who slips into the role of a petty thief with a commanding performance.” In 1963, Palsikar appeared in Khwaja Ahmad Abbas’s Shehar Aur Sapna (The City and The Dreams). It is a social film which portrays the struggle of pavement dwellers in the backdrop of rapid industrialisation. The film, a love story that takes place in a drain pipe, received the President’s Gold Medal Award and the National Film Award for Best Feature Film. Palsikar’s performance as Johnny earned him his second Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor, and he was acknowledged as Best Supporting Actor (Hindi) by the Bengal Film Journalists’ Association. John Berry’s Maya (1966) saw Palsikar playing Sajid Khan’s father. In 1969, James Ivory cast him in the foreign co-production The Guru. Ivory said, “I didn’t know a great deal about him when we cast him… He was said to be a very good actor, which I took on faith.” Judith Crist from the New York Magazine described his small part of “The Guru’s Guru” in the film as “an unforgettable cameo”. In the 1970s, Palsikar continued to portray father figures or authoritative characters such as judges. For instance he played the role of a father in many films such as B. R. Chopra’s Dhund based on Agatha Christie’s play, The Unexpected Guest, in 1973 and Yaaron Ka Yaar in 1977. However these roles were generally relatively minor and he was often uncredited for his performances, such as his role as a judge in Jwar Bhata in 1972. He continued playing a father into the 1980s, appearing in Aakrosh (1980), playing Om Puri’s dad. His last major film was in the epic film, Gandhi in 1982, a Richard Attenborough directed biographical film based on the life of Mohandas Gandhi, who led the nonviolent resistance movement against British colonial rule in India during the first half of the 20th century. However his role very minor, playing a villager. His last ever appearance was shortly before his death in 1984 in the film Kanoon Kya Karega, again playing a parent. ★ Salman Khan’s Tubelight needs a chance, beyond the harsh criticism !
Salman Khan kept his date with Eid again, giving us one of the biggest films of the year - Kabir Khan's Tubelight. But much against the expectation, the movie got trashed by the critics for reasons more than one. But did a film, which has brought Salman in a never-seen-before avatar really deserved so much criticism?

There are quite many films which vanish from the box office without any noise. Then there are some for which you wait really long but the word on the street is against them as soon as they land. Salman Khan’s Tubelight, for me, fell under the second category. Of course it had left me intrigued ever since its trailer released. Yes, it did have a Bajrangi Bhaijaan feel from the first look but I was still curious. Then the decisive weekend arrived and within hours the critics fell heavily on this Kabir Khan directorial. ‘Weak, stretched, trying too hard, stale, over acting’ — these were some of the words which flashed in review after review. I was disappointed to the extent that by the time I finally went to watch it after two days, my excitement level was zero. But it turned out to be a completely unexpected experience. Tubelight, for me, is a fine film. Salman Khan has done well, yes I’m happy to see him emote! So why all this harshness for a movie that tried to become an Eid gift for its audience?
They say all publicity is good publicity. And all the good things were happening with Tubelight too – great promotions, Bhai-Bhai bond, an adorable child actor and the right build up ahead of its release. Then why did the words of critics broke the movie? Don’t we see that this is the same Salman, the mass entertainer, who has shed his persona, giving us a departure from his Dabangg-giri and risking a film after keeping the Eid throne in his name for years? No, he isn’t flexing his muscles, neither is he romancing his ladies or speaking some cheesy lines. He is playing a child-man, a simpleton out to find his lost brother, while unknowingly giving out a message about the futility of war.
But we have seen actors playing such challenging roles, where acting ruled over their chiseled bodies. Hrithik Roshan did it in Koi Mil Gaya, Shah Rukh Khan did it in My Name Is Khan… Then why can’t Salman? Or maybe it is because we don’t want him to break away from his larger-than-life image. Quite unfair, right?
The blockbuster duo of Salman-Kabir Khan seek the conviction of fans. And why not? They gave us two of the most commercially successful films in recent times – Bajrangi Bhaijaan and Ek Tha Tiger. So now it is the audience’s turn to give them back some love.
Agreed, Salman looked a little too beefed up at places, his age lines hampered his performance and the war scenes looked too pale, but let’s not forget that the actor has played a character role after a really long time, well, maybe more! He convinces as Tubelight right from the very go. His innocent commentary about his childhood, his love for his brother, his Gandhism, his never-say-die attitude, no his character wasn’t something as bad as was written in the initial reviews. Very silently, the film propagates the values of family and patriotism, without taking sides.
For me, Salman Khan’s close-up shots where he is laughing and crying all at the same time, were his best. His natural chemistry with Matin Rey ‘goo’ Tengu was the film’s high point and his scenes with Zhu Zhu, where he unknowingly gives her faith ‘yakeen’, are a beautiful take-away too.
Tubelight’s supporting cast including Chinese actor Zhu Zhu, Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub, late actor Om Puri and child artiste Matin Rey Tangu have won applause.
All I wish is that the cinegoers gives it’s own verdict and not get carried away by what is being said. This film deserves more. Also, Salman shouldn’t get demotivated by the risk he has taken. There is still an audience which is flowing in his love and belief in the film. Critics might have affected the film’s opening week’s performance, but Eid has just passed, and it’s Eidi is yet to reflect at the box office. I urge Salman to continue doing projects which touch our hearts. For there is a section of fans, who like to see his ‘other’ side, who like to cry with him, laugh with him, who like to see beyond the Sultan or Chulbul Pandey in him. After all, we still feel the same connect with Salman, what he established with us in the 90s, don’t we?

Tubelight box office collections Day 1: Salman Khan starrer shines bright on the opening day
Salman Khan's pre-Eid release Tubelight has finally hit the theatres. Contrary to other Salman Khan films, this movie is away from the masala space and is very high on emotional quotient. Even though the movie opened to mixed reviews, it manages to gross INR 20.50-21 crore nett on its opening day, according to a leading trade site.

The numbers are good considering that this is unlike Salman Khan's other genre but considering that it is an EID release, expectations were slightly higher.
Tubelight Day 1 collection is quite similar to that of Raees which minted around INR 20.42 crore on Day One. But, Raees which released earlier this year had clashed with Kaabil and although Kaabil hardly collected, it took screens away from Raaes which meant the 20.50 crore nett of Raees came on a much lower capacity than the 20.5 crore nett of Tubelight.
When compared to Salman's other EID released, it fell short of around INR 4-5 crore as a Kick had done 24.97 crore nett and Bajrangi Bhaijaan 26.67 crore nett and both these films were also pre Eid releases.
When compared to the circuit business, Tubelight did good business in East Punjab and Delhi city while Raees performed an average business there while Raees was strong in Gujarat and West Bengal but Tubelight did not perform well here. However, the film has done very well in Assam probably due to the local appeal but that is such a small circuit that it hardly registers as per the all India picture.
However, it is expected to pick up post-Monday once the holy month of Ramadan ends.
Helmed by Kabir Khan, Tubelight also stars Sohail Khan, child actor Matin Rey Tangu, Chinese actor Zhu Zhu and late veteran actor Om Puri in pivotal roles.

Om Puri's last interview: Did he have a premonition he was going to die?
Did Om Puri have a premonition about his death when he spoke about it just a fortnight ago? In retrospect, it would seem so, because he talked about "leaving the world" and that his legacy would be "visible" once he departed.
In an interview to IANS, Om Puri spoke about his contribution to cinema and how it will all be visible when he leaves the world. His comments on leaving the world have become a reality too soon.
In one of his last interviews, which took place at a hotel in Mumbai on December 23, 2016, Om Puri said, "My contribution as an actor will be visible once I leave this world and the young generation, especially film students will watch my films."
The 66 year-old actor died of a heart attack at his residence in Mumbai early morning on Friday.
Today, as he leaves a void in the world of cinema with his untimely demise, the film fraternity is looking back at his vast contribution to showbiz. Theatre, television, Indian and British films, Hollywood and Pakistani cinema - he did it all and left a lasting impression. His legacy, celebrities said, will live on.

A lover of alternate cinema with socially relevant themes at its core, Om Puri said, "For me, the real hard-hitting cinema was between 1980s and 1990s where Shyam Benegal, Govind Nihalani, Basu Chatterjee, Mrinal Sen and Gulzar made some remarkable films."
He worked in multiple projects with Govind Nihalani and Shyam Benegal - films like Aakrosh, Ardh Satya and Tamas, which catapulted him to the league of great actors. Both the directors were overcome by emotions after the news of Om Puri's death broke. In shaky voices, both said it was too early to talk.
Just days earlier, Om Puri was happily interacting with young scribes to promote his upcoming political satire Rambhajan Zindabad. Casually dressed in a pair of baggy jeans and a black shirt, he was, as was his style, devoid of any airs about his stardom - a position not defined by fanatical, frenzied fans, but by the sheer following of his nuanced performances and undying passion for art.
He was - as the biography by his former wife Nandita Puri - rightly says, an "Unlikely Hero".
The veteran actor, a recipient of Padma Shri, started his journey as an actor with a Marathi film Ghashiram Kotwal in 1972. If he featured in some intense dramas, he also balanced out his filmography with movies like Mirch Masala, Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro, Chachi 420, Hera Pheri, Malamaal Weekly and more.
"There are two kinds of cinema - one is just for entertainment, the other touches your heart. Both have their own purpose," Om Puri had said.
When he was the chairman of the National Film Development Corporation, Om Puri was focussed on encouraging meaningful films. The National School of Drama alumnus was also president of Cine and TV Artistes' Association.

More recently, he featured in Bollywood films like Ghayal Once Again and Mirzya, as well as in Pakistani film Actor In Law. He even used his distinct baritone for the voice of black panther Bagheera in the Hindi dubbed version of Hollywood film The Jungle Book.
Age did not slow him down. He was busy dabbling in multiple projects like Viceroy's House, Tubelight and Manto.
The two-time National Film Award winner was honoured with the Padma Shri, India's fourth highest civilian award, in 1990.
His international career took off as early as 1982 when he featured in a small role in Oscar-winning film Gandhi. It also set the stage for him to explore more on foreign shores - his British films were My Son the Fanatic, East Is East and The Parole Officer, and his Hollywood movies included City of Joy, Wolf, The Ghost and the Darkness and The Hundred-Foot Journey.
In 2004, he was made an honorary officer of the Order of the British Empire for services to the British film industry.
While he had a glorious journey in the film world, his personal life went through turbulence. In 2013, his wife had filed a case against him, alleging domestic violence. They separated, leaving him with only visitation rights to their son, Ishaan.
He was frank and blunt about his views - and just last year, he faced the brunt of it when a police complaint was filed against him for his comments that were found to be insulting to Indian soldiers. In 2015, he spoke on the issue of cow slaughter in India. In 2012, he had landed in a bit of a soup after he called Naxals "fighters not terrorists".
But Om Puri remained fearless till the end - in his works and his words.

Diwali is a festival of lights and is something that is celebrated in every corner of India. The festival also helps Bollywood in a major way as films released during the festive season get maximum audience footfall since families and friends want to go out and have a good time. History supports this claim as well since films releasing on the festival of Diwali generally have gone on to make the big bucks. Since the 90s, we have seen the Diwali slot mostly occupied by Shah Rukh Khan, Rohit Shetty or Ajay Devgn with Salman Khan also making an appearance in 2015. So, we decided to take a little trip down the memory lane and bring you some of our favourite Bollywood films that released during the festive season of Diwali.

Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge is not only one of the biggest Diwali releases from Bollywood but also is one of the biggest films in the history of Indian cinema. On paper, the film doesn’t sound anything extraordinary. Boy meets girl. The two don’t get along too well in the start but later on, realise that they deeply feel for each other. And then, we set off on a journey to see how they overcome the obstacles that stand between them. Yes, the film was indeed simple but it was nothing short of special. Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge was also the directorial debut for Aditya Chopra and right with this film he proved that he’s a suitable successor to carry forward the rich legacy of the prestigious production house. The leading stars of the film Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol have had plenty of hits together (Baazigar, Karan Arjun, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham) but this one surely ranks as their best. Strong performances from the supporting cast including the likes of Amrish Puri, Farida Jalal, Anupam Kher and Satish Shah and a bunch of brilliantly written songs helped Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge into a timeless classic.
Veer Zara (2004)

Veer Zara told us a tale of love that goes beyond borders. Like every Yash Chopra film, Veer Zara was visually on point along with some unrestrained emotion and some overdone sentimentality. Although we have seen stories like this before, Yash Chopra creates an entirely different film with the way he’s able to portray the love these two leads have for each other, the honour they pay to parents and elders and their genuine willingness to sacrifice themselves for each other. Despite limited screen time, Rani Mukerji makes a strong impact with her performance as a Pakistani lawyer. The lead pair's chemistry from their younger days all the way to the days of their fifties is absolutely spot on. The supporting cast comprising of Divya Dutta, Kirron Kher, Boman Irani, and Manoj Bajpai make full use of their well-defined characters and are able to deliver spectacular performances.
Garam Masala (2005)

Cast: Akshay Kumar, John Abraham, Paresh Rawal and Rajpal Yadav
Can any festive watchlist be complete without an Akshay Kumar comedy? We don’t think so. Garam Masala was another Diwali release that might not have had a storyline that will make you put your thinking hat on but it sure entertains you. The film revolves around two photographers Mac (Akshay Kumar) and Shawm (John Abraham). The two work for the same company and always are battling it our whether it is to get in the good books of the boss or for a girl they’re trying to impress. To get back at Shyam for getting a promotion, Mac begins to woo three air hostesses and also gets possession of a big house. Garam Masala is a classic Priyadarshan flick in which the audience is constantly served doses of comedy. Along with the Akshay and John, the film also stars Paresh Rawal, Rajpal Yadav, Rimi Sen and Asrani in supporting roles.
Don (2006)
Director: Farhan Akhtar
Cast: Shah Rukh Khan, Priyanka Chopra, Arjun Rampal, Kareena Kapoor (Cameo), Boman Irani, Isha Koppikar, and Om Puri
Don was a remake of Amitabh Bachchan’s film with the same name. Shah Rukh Khan stepped in the shoes of Big B and did complete justice to the role. While the storyline of the film was more or less the same as the original, Farhan Akhtar did have a trick up his sleeve by changing the climax of the film which also paved way for the sequel. Along with Shah Rukh Khan, the film also starred Priyanka Chopra, Boman Irani, Isha Koppikar and Arjun Rampal in lead. We also saw a brief appearance from Kareena Kapoor Khan in the film as she flaunted her sizzling moves in the song Yeh Mera Dil. The film, however, was a Shah Rukh Khan show all the way as he was able to seamlessly switch between the roles of Don and Vijay.
Om Shanti Om (2007) Director: Farah Khan

Another Shah Rukh Khan release, another blockbuster. Om Shanti Om was Shah Rukh Khan and Farah Khan’s second collaboration after Main Hoon Na, which also went on to be a massive success. Om Shanti Om also marked the debut of Deepika Padukone. The film revolved around the subject of reincarnation. In the first half of the film, Shah Rukh Khan played the character of Om, a struggling artist in Bollywood who dreams to make it big. Om is hopelessly in love with Shanti Priya (Deepika Padukone), one of the biggest stars around at the time. Om happens to witness Shanti’s death through the hands of Mukesh Mehra (Arjun Rampal). Even though he tries his best to save her, he fails and ends up passing away in the process. But, as Om says, “Picture Abhi baaki hai mere dost”. Om takes birth again as OK aka Om Kapoor, a son of an established star in the industry. And as fate has it, he happens to cross paths with Mukesh in his second life which ends up with him remembering of his wrong deeds. The with the help of Sandy (Also Deepika Padukone) he formulates a plan to avenge his love Shanti’s death. While reincarnation isn’t a new concept in Bollywood, Om Shanti Om proved to be a thoroughly entertaining film which was loved by the audience.
All The Best (2009)
Director: Rohit Shetty
Cast: Ajay Devgn, Sanjay Dutt, Fardeen Khan, Bipasha Basu, Johny Lever, Sanjay Mishra and Mugdha Godse
Another comedy film that you must watch with your close ones this Diwali is Rohit Shetty’s All The Best. The film almost has a David Dhawan vibe to it. Veer (Fardeen Khan) and Prem (Ajay Devgn) are two friends who end up loosing money in a car race. The problems for the two increase further when Veer’s elder brother Dharam (Sanjay Dutt) makes his entry into the picture and they have to find a way to pay up the cash they lost while not letting Dharam figure what is going on. While the humour is mainly brought by the situation, Rohit Shetty also makes good use of his cast by presenting them to the audience with funny characters. While it obviously is not a Hera Pheri, the film does give you a fair share of laughs making it definitely worth checking out if you haven’t already.
Ae Dil Hai Mushkil (2016)

The Ranbir Kapoor, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Anushka Sharma starrer Ae Dil Hai Mushkil was Karan Johar’s last project that hit the big screen. To sum it up, the film was a story about unrequited love - the shapes it takes, the ways it changes us and the exhilarating and often terrifying ride it takes us on. And this story is told through the film’s two lead characters Ayan (Ranbir Kapoor) and Alizeh (Anushka Sharma). Karan Johar makes you feel exactly how it’s like when you love someone who doesn’t love you back. Although there are some elements borrowed from other films, the storytelling on its own is extraordinary. Ranbir delivers yet another exceptional performance with this one. He is able to express the pain of his character effortlessly and you can see the pain in his eyes which makes the story all the more relatable. Anushka and Aishwarya too play their roles to perfection. The chemistry that Ranbir shares with his two gorgeous co-stars helps the film a long way.
Secret Superstar (2017)

Cast:Zaira Wasim, Meher Vij, Raj Arjun and Aamir Khan
One common factor that you can observe in most Aamir Khan films is an inspiration. Through his movies, the actor makes you inspire, makes you believe and obviously makes you entertained. Secret Superstar was a story of one girl who inspired and believed. The supremely talented Zaira Wasim, who recently impressed everyone with her performance in Shonali Bose’s The Sky Is Pink, plays the character of Insia. Insia aspires to be a singer and believes she has what it takes to be the best but the big obstacle in the way of chasing her dream is her own father Farookh (Raj Arjun). Farookh was a man of orthodox thinking and felt hobbies like singing and dancing don’t get you anywhere in life. A heartbroken Insia achieves her dream with the help of the internet along with keeping her identity as a secret and thus the name Secret Superstar. Aamir Khan decided to take the backseat in this one and let Zaira Wasim take the spotlight. He plays the role of music director Shakti Kumar and gives the audience bursts of laughter in an otherwise serious drama.

Remembering Om Puri Saab on his 67th birth anniversary.
Om Prakash Puri (18 October 1950 – 6 January 2017) was an actor who appeared in mainstream commercial Indian films, as well as independent and art films. He is best known for his author-backed roles in films like Aakrosh (1980), Arohan (1982) and television films like Sadgati (1981) and Tamas (1987) and also light-hearted roles in Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro (1983) and Chachi 420 (1997). He had various collaborations with director Shyam Benegal and Govind Nihalani. Puri also appeared in non-Indian productions in the United States, Britain and Pakistan.
Puri was awarded Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award of India, in 1990; and in 2004, was made an honorary Officer of the Order of the British Empire.
He has worked in Hindi television serials like Kakkaji Kaheen (1988) (roughly meaning "Uncle Says") as a paan-chewing 'Kakkaji', which was a parody on politicians, and Mr. Yogi (1989) as a suave 'Sutradhaar' who enjoys pulling the protagonist's leg. These two serials underlined Om Puri's versatility as a comedian. He received critical acclaim for his performance in Govind Nihalani's television film Tamas (1988) based on a Hindi novel of the same name. He played comic roles in Hindi films like Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro which reached a cult status, followed by Chachi 420 (1997), Hera Pheri (2000), Chor Machaye Shor (2002), Deewane Hue Pagal, Chup Chup Ke, Kismet Connection and Malamaal Weekly (2006) and Oh My God. He was regular in films directed by Priyadarshan and Kamal Haasan.
His notable roles in commercial Hindi films included Drohkaal, In Custody, Narsimha, Ghayal, Mrityudand, Aastha, Hey Ram, Pyar Toh Hona Hi Tha, Farz, Gadar, Lakshya, Dev (2004), Rang De Basanti, Yuva, Singh Is Kinng, Mere Baap Pehle Aap, Billu, Kyunki, Lakshya, Dabang, Bhaji In Problem, Khap, Bajrangi Bhaijaan, Ghayal Once Again. Puri was seen in the role of Mohammad Ali Kasuri in Road to Sangam (2009). In 2010, he appeared in The Hangman. In 2011 he was in the Indian action film Don 2.
He has also worked in some episodes of the TV series Aahat during the second season which was aired between 2004 and 2005 on Sony channel. Other notable television appearances included Bharat Ek Khoj, Yatra, Mr. Yogi, Kakaji Kahin, Sea Hawks, Antaral and Savdhaan India's second season.
In 2014, he appeared opposite Helen Mirren in the comedy-drama The Hundred-Foot Journey. At the time of his death in January 2017, he was working on the Marathi film, 15 August Bhagile 26 January.
Several of his completed films released after his death including Viceroy's House and Tubelight.
