I really wanted to have something to frame the eclipse up with, but with it being directly overhead, choices were limited and I didn't want to do a composite this time. Show of hands: who knew New Zealand has Redwoods???⁣ ⁣ [ hides own hands in shame ] ⁣ ⁣ I knew NZ had mountains, coastline, and caves. I knew it was the land of the haka, second breakfast, Flight of the Conchords, and Kiwis. What I didn’t know is that there were Redwoods primed for exploration. ⁣ ⁣ It was a lovely revelation to realize travelers can explore Rotorua’s Redwoods via the @treewalknz, a series of suspension bridges and platforms raised above the forest floor. The views are gorgeous during the day, and pretty damn magical at night due to a lights display developed by artist @davidtrubridge. ⁣ ⁣ 🌲⁣ ⁣ Although @erinoutdoors and I found ourselves exploring the forest on a rainy day, I didn’t have to worry about my camera gear getting wet since I shoot with a rugged, water-resistant mirrorless camera made by @getolympus—the OM-D EM-1 Mark II. ⁣ ⁣ For years, I struggled against the elements while on assignment, shooting with temperamental gear that needed serious workarounds when it came to weather protection. I even spent years shooting major TV series for Discovery and History channels with my cameras sheathed in large Ziploc bags that were secured with duct tape to keep them from getting wet.⁣ ⁣ Now, I can bring my camera kit anywhere with me without stressing about the weather. I don’t worry about how much the gear weighs on remote shoots since the rig is so light. In fact, I don’t even need a tripod for long exposures… as long as I’ve got a steady hand, I can open up the shutter and get crisp evening shots like these tree photos thanks to the camera’s internal stabilizer.⁣ ⁣ Why does all that matter? ‘Cause it means I can show up pretty much anywhere, in any condition, and be ready to capture stories for you. Ich bin mit dem neuen Photoapparat schon ziemlich happy, muss aber immer noch ein wenig an den, für meine Zwecke, optimalen Einstellungen arbeiten. Das Photo "A Young Lady" habe ich mit einem 17,5 mm (aka 35mm) Objektiv mit Blende 4 aufgenommen und manuell auf das linke Auge fokussiert. Das Photo hat eine perfekte Schärfe so das ein cropping auf im Editing noch gut möglich ich. Ich bin begeistert. Die anderen Photo wurden mit einem Zoomobjektiv mit Single Autofokus Messung und automatischer Gesichtserkennung und Blende 2,8 photographiert. Die Resultate sind ziemlich gut, aber ich denke da sollte noch etwas mehr drin sein. An dieser Stelle muss ich wohl noch ein wenig mehr mit dem Autofokus herum experimentieren bis ich die richtigen Parameter gefunden habe und die Resultate meinen Vorstellungen entsprechen.

Meet the Olympus OM-D E-M5 Mark III

The Olympus OM-D E-M5 III is a compact, weather-sealed camera built around a 20 megapixel sensor. (Olympus/)

Early this morning Olympus announced the OM-D E-M5 Mark III, a compact ILC that packs in some of the tech found inside the higher-end EM-1 Mark II. The new camera employs a 20 megapixel Live MOS sensor, has 5-axis in-body image stabilization with up to 5.5 EV steps of compensation, and comes in a weather-sealed package. The most notable difference of the OM-D E-M5 Mark III from its predecessor is the size though. To achieve a more compact package Olympus switched to a smaller battery and simplified the image stabilization tech.

Here is what else we know about it:

30 frames per second sequential shooting

121-point all cross type AF points

Phase detection AF, including face and eye detection

AF/AE tracking supports 10fps high-speed sequential shooting

2.36 million-dot, high-contrast OLED

High-speed mechanical shutter can capture exposures up to 1/8000 sec

Versatile shooting modes in camera like Live Composite and Focus Stacking

Capable of shooting Cinema 4K Video and Pro Capture, Full HD 30 fps, All-Intra and Full HD 60p

Dustproof, splash proof and freezeproof design

Refined grip with an updated Custom Mode setting

WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity for easy sharing

Available in black or silver in late November for $1,200 (body only) or $1,800 when paired with the M.Zuiko Digital ED 14-150mm F4.0-5.6 II lens

This is a micro four thirds camera system is aimed at enthusiasts for whom camera bulk is a real issue. It seems like it will be a great option for people hoping to capture fast action and adventure inside of a rugged body that can stand up to a bit of abuse. The addition of face and eye detection and the longer battery life make the camera seem like a solid choice for young families on the go who are ready to take a step up from their smartphone.

As a wedding photographer and founder of the photography site Shotkit, I come across a lot of camera gear.

5 Tips to help you choose a great travel camera

I travel a lot both for work and for pleasure, and it’s been a never-ending quest to find the ultimate travel camera to make documenting my trips more enjoyable and efficient.

I’ve put together my top 5 tips on choosing a great travel camera for all you Out of Town Blog readers, to ensure you can get the best photos while on your next holiday.

Tip #1 – Get a Small Camera

When I see someone traveling with a big, bulky dSLR camera, it makes me cringe! With the advent of mirrorless compact cameras, professional image quality can now be attained in a camera body that’s often half the size of the average dSLR.

As a seasoned traveller, you already know that to be able to fully enjoy your travels, it’s important that you travel light. Having a small, lightweight camera is essential to ensure your camera can be carried either around your neck, or in your pocket, ready to be used straight away.

The Canon is a capable, robust and extremely popular camera which is the perfect size for travel.

Tip #2 – Get a Camera with Fast Auto-Focus

Auto-focus refers to the camera’s ability to grab focus on a subject and take a blur free shot in as short a time as possible. Having fast auto focus is essential in a travel camera, allowing you to get the shot and move on without wasting time.

Whether you need to take an action shot of the kids jumping into the pool or want to take some snaps of the locals whilst whizzing past them on a bus, a camera with great auto-focus is a huge plus.

This Olympus has faster auto-focus than most dSLRs that cost 3x the price, and also features an incredibly useful touchscreen shooting function.

Tip #3 – Invest in a Camera with Good Image Quality

Having a camera to document your travels which provides excellent image quality is a no-brainer, but perhaps you didn’t know that this was possible in small, affordable camera bodies.

Obviously, affordability is a subjective thing, but when it comes to cameras, spending a little more really does yield some enormous benefits in image quality. Spending around $1,000 on the right camera can mean professional-grade image quality.

There’s nothing worse than seeing the wonders of the world on your travels, only to have captured them on your iPhone or lesser compact camera. Make the most of your memories with a camera that can produce beautiful photos.

The Fuji X100F has incredible image quality for a compact mirrorless camera. It’s actually my camera of choice, and have included it in this post on the best travel cameras.

Tip #4 – Pack only one lens

This tip can seem somewhat counter-intuitive, especially for those of you with inter-changeable lens cameras. Why buy a camera that allows you to change lenses and limit yourself to only one lens?

Having only one lens on your camera whilst traveling is not only incredibly liberating (less weight=more fun!), but also, the limitation in focal length will do wonders for your photography.

When using one versatile focal length such as 50mm or 35mm for an extended period, you’ll be able to compose your photo before you’ve even lifted the camera to your eye. You’ll also be able to cover everything from landscapes to portraits with just one lens, eliminating any time wasted fiddling around with other lenses.

Recommended Lens: Any 35mm or 50mm prime lens

If you’re using a crop-sensor camera, you’ll need to take into account the multiplication factor of the focal length, but you’ll usually be able to find a 35mm or 50mm equivalent. Try and get one with a large aperture (e.g. f/1.8, f/1.4 etc) for beautiful ‘bokeh’ and better ability in low light.

Tip #5 – Get a Camera with Wifi

What’s the point of taking great photos with your new camera if it’s a pain to share them, right?! We all want to show off the great places we travel to after all…

Having good wifi on your camera makes sharing an image to your smart phone or tablet a breeze, and it’s so much more convenient than fiddling around with memory cards. I recommend you back-up your memory card to a laptop often whilst traveling, but for transferring a handful of photos, nothing beats wifi.

Another great usage of camera wifi is being able to use your mobile device to see what the camera sees, and take a shot remotely. This means you’ll now be able to take well composed selfies at more than an arm’s length, and be part of every group photo with any friends you make whilst traveling.
