Nigeria mourns the loss of its Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, who passed away on Tuesday in Lagos after a brief illness. His untimely death, coming just a year after his appointment by President Bola Tinubu, has sent waves of shock across the nation. This sorrowful incident is the third time a Chief of Army Staff has died while in office, marking yet another painful chapter in Nigeria’s history of military leadership losses. Below are the former Chiefs of Army Staff who met a similar fate while serving in office: Joseph Akahan (August 1967)   Joseph Akahan Joseph Akahan, appointed as Army Chief at the age of 30, assumed the role shortly before the outbreak of the Nigerian Civil War in 1967. Following a visit to the frontlines in Nsukka, he returned briefly to his hometown in Gboko to rest. Tragically, on his way back to Makurdi, the helicopter he was traveling in crashed, resulting in his death along with those of the two pilots on board. Attahiru Ibrahim (May 21, 2021) Ibrahim Attahiru Lt. Gen. Ibrahim Attahiru, appointed as Chief of Army Staff in January 2021 to succeed Tukur Buratai, tragically passed away just months into his tenure. His appointment, along with those of other service chiefs—Lucky Irabor as Chief of Defence Staff, Zubairu Gambo as Chief of Naval Staff, and Isiaka Amao as Chief of Air Staff—came amid mounting pressure for new military leadership due to rising security challenges. While on an official assignment from Abuja to Kaduna, Attahiru's aircraft encountered severe weather conditions, resulting in a crash that claimed his life along with those of 10 members of his entourage. Taoreed Lagbaja (November 5, 2024) Taoreed Lagbaja Lagbaja, a graduate of the U.S. Army War College, was commissioned into the Nigerian Army in 1992. Prior to his appointment as Chief of Army Staff on June 19, 2023, he served as a platoon commander with the 93 Battalion and later with the 72 Special Forces Battalion.   He was instrumental in several internal security operations, including Operation ZAKI in Benue State, Lafiya Dole in Borno, Udoka in the Southeast, and Operation Forest Sanity across Kaduna and Niger States.   Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga announced that the Army chief passed away in Lagos following a brief illness. His position has now been filled by Olufemi Oluyede, his classmate from the Nigerian Defence Academy, who was appointed acting Chief of Army Staff last Wednesday amid Lagbaja’s prolonged indisposition.

By • Olalekan Fagbade I will improve troops’ motivation for operational effectiveness, efficiency — COAS assures Soldiers The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen Taoreed Lagbaja, says he will enhance the motivation of troops to improve their effectiveness and efficiency during operations. Lagbaja made the pledge while declaring open the Second Regimental Sergeant Majors (RSMs) 2023 Convention, on Monday in Ibadan. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the theme of the programme is “Leveraging Sound Administration for Highly Motivated Force and Operational Efefficiency in the Nigerian Army”. Lagbaja was represented by the Commander Infantry Corps, Maj.-Gen. Olufemi Oluyede. He said one of his priorities was to improve operational effectiveness and efficiency of the Nigerian Army personnel through effective motivation. The COAS said that human resources are essential to the success of any organisations and this was why sound administration was made a critical component of his command philosophy. “The Nigerian Army has undergone series of transformational strides in recent years and this has led to a great expansion in almost all spheres in the Nigerian Army ranging from welfare schemes, training, courses, increased manpower and infrastructural development. “It is my drive to leverage sound administration to harness resources and opportunities within the Nigeria Army environment to motivate troops and improve operational efficiency in the NA,” he added. The COAS said that sound administration would raise the morale of troops in the field and serve as a link between officers and soldiers. He called on the participants to support his vision by maintaining discipline and ensuring that the cherished traditions, customs and ethics of the Nigerian Army are continuously upheld. Lagbaja called on the RSMs to sustain their role in discipline and regimentation in all the Nigerian Army units, formations and establishments. He also urged them to leverage on the Army’s administrative policy instruments to further improve unit administration in their respective domains. “RSMs as the embodiment of discipline and regimentation in the NA, have a key role to play in upholding the professional status of the NA in the face of pervasive effects of social media engagements by soldiers. “It therefore, requires that you all must be up to date with respect to these responsibilities to cultivate, grow and nurture professional and appropriate behaviours amongst personnel, thereby contributing to the overall efficiency of the Nigerian Army,” he said. Lagbaja expressed optimism that the convention would keep the participants abreast with the latest administrative innovations of the Nigerian Army designed to improve troops’ morale and defeat malfeasance among personnel. In his remarks, Chief of Administration (Army), Maj.-Gen. Jimmy Akpor, said it was important for the RSMs to be constantly trained and sensitised on new policies and plans of the Nigerian Army. Akpor said that the Nigerian Army depends on them to maintain higher standard of regimentation for all personnel. He chargec the RSMs to utilise what they learned during the convention to improve the conduct of soldiers in their various formations and units. (NAN)

Earlier reports revealed that he had been secretly flown abroad for medical treatment following a prolonged absence from official duties. Major General Olufemi Oluyede Biography, Family, Career, State of Origin Lagbaja, who was born on February 28, 1968, in Ilobu, Osun State, was appointed as the 27th Chief of Army Staff by President Tinubu in June 2023. He took office on June 23, 2023, replacing Faruk Yahaya. The Chief of Army Staff plays a crucial role, reporting to the Chief of Defence Staff, who, in turn, reports to the Defence Minister and ultimately to the President of Nigeria. Health Concerns and Leadership Void Sources described Lagbaja's ailment as "strange" and indicated that he had not been seen at the Army headquarters or any military functions for over three weeks. One insider stated, “The Chief of Army Staff is nowhere to be found. He hasn’t been seen for many days now. I can confirm he is seriously sick and was taken to the hospital, but his family arranged for him to be moved out of the country for treatment.” The current leadership void has left many Major Generals in the Nigerian Army in a state of uncertainty, as they lack direct guidance during this critical period. As the military awaits Lagbaja's recovery, the pressure mounts on Oluyede to lead effectively in his new capacity as Lieutenant General.
