Nothingâs Fair in Love and War - Six
Title: Nothingâs Fair in Love and War
Fandom: Peaky Blinders
Pairing: Thomas Shelby x Daphne Scott (OFC)
Warnings: Swearing.
Word Count: 4022
Author's Note: Hello, people! Here we are with a brand new chapter. A few warnings before we begin (or after, because is basically information about somethings mentioned during this chapter and it could be interpreted as spoilers, so it's up to you): 1. I know that according to the audio of "The Ballad of Tommy Shelby" the boys enlisted in 1915, but as @andtherewerefireworksâ pointed out, this doesn't fit with the historical facts and informations given by the show (as a lot of other thing's don't, but apparently Steven doesn't give a fuck about it - don't let me get started) so I ignored this piece of information - the boys enlisted in 1914 instead and the world makes sense again; 2. I did some research to know more about military nurses and took a poetic license to ignore the age that was permited for women to enlist at the time; 3. Kugel really is a Jewish dish and I am shamelessly entertaining my headcanon that Alfie does, in fact, cook/bake. Sorry, not sorry. 4. Have I mentioned that sometimes I hate Steven? Because I do. There were somethings that took me a lot of time to figure out between episodes 04 and 05 of the third season and I am still not sure about somethings, so if you feel confused about something you're more than welcome to come talk to me and I can explain it.
Fair warning, as always, if you find any mistakes feel more than free to report back to me; warnings are expecific for each chapter; and your feedback is always appreciated (given the fact that this is a sideblog, answers always are in the name of my main one thanks to dumb Tumblr - @myplaceofheavenorhellâ). Also, if you haven't read my "BIG ANNOUNCEMENT" post (I really don't blame you), please, start following me on @amysteryspotâ.

Chapter Summary: Alfie and Sabini make amends and join forces to get rid of the Peaky Blinders. Daphne and Polly have a very pleasing evening and Tommy goes visit May to ensure that things are going according to his plan, only to be met with a question he doesn't want to answer.

Alfie Solomons was never known for a man who has a lot of patience, no, people tend to think that he actually has none at all but that is far from the truth. God knows that he had to have a lot of fucking patience to get where he is now, Alfie is a man who is always waiting for the right moment to do the things that would benefit him the most. And that was what he was doing right now - waiting to see if the decision he has made would, in fact, bring him any good.
The doors of the bakery were opened by two of his men and Sabini came into view - the italian flag on his hands, three of his men behind him and his second in command, Matteo, with a white flag by his side. They approached each other, the Jew gave the Italian the basket of bread that was immediately passed over to Matteo, before he stepped closer to Alfie giving him the standard three kisses on the checks as a form of greeting.
âI canât help but notice that there is a presence in absence here today. Isnât Miss Scott joining us?â Alfie was kinda expecting that since the Italian seemed to have a soft spot for the young woman, but the question almost made him frown for entirely different reasons. Daphne had left hours before to go to Birmingham and meet with Polly Gray, she didnât knew about the meeting or his plans but somehow that didnât make Alfie worry less about her like he thought it would.
âDaphne is out in another appointment. Just us today, so let's talk, eh?â Sabini shared a look with Matteo before nodding to Alfie guide them through the bakery. The Jew sat on one side of the table with Ollie by his side, cane propped up in front of him, his hands resting on top of it, while Sabini and Matteo did the same at the other side, their men behind them and a menacing silence filling the room until the Italian leader spoke.
âDid you know they was going to take the Eden club?â
âI know about the Eden club, yes.â
âDid you know they were going to do it before they did it? Because that's the one who's in charge, isn't it? The one who knows before it happens.â
âI know what I know, you know. If you don't know, then you don't fucking know, do you?â
âDid you know they was going to take Wimbledon dogs? Harringay? The trotting tracks?â
âTalk, all right? I genuinely want to hear you.â
âYou've lost control, Alfie.â Matteo was the one to talk, making Alfie look at him in concealed anger.
âHave I?â
âEverybody knows.â The Italian added.
âTalk to me, Alfie.â Sabini said, interrupting the argument and making Alfieâs attention go back to him again.
âTalk to you?â The Jew paused for emphasis. âAll right, I'll talk to you. I'll fucking tell you how it was, right? What happened was this. All the time you were talking about dirty fucking Jews. All the fucking time - dirty fucking Jews, dirty Kikes, dirty dustbin lidsâŚâ The Italian leader shared a look with Matteo again.
âEveryone makes jokes.â
âYou want to talk about not getting into places?â
âEverybody makes fucking jokes. I didn't know you had no sense of humour!â
âAnd I ain't going to FUCKING mention, right, the great big fuck off elephant in the room.â Sabini closes his eyes for a brief moment before talking again.
âLook, AlfieâŚâ
âHow many of my bookies worked Epsom this last May? None. None. Not one.â
âSo, for a few fucking jokes and Epsom, you fucking invite a tribe of savages into the city and just fucking unlock the fucking gates!â While Sabini is yeeling and gesticulating frantically with his hands Alfie is just sitting there, not even bored by it.
âI'm sorry, what are you saying, mate?â
âI'm saying I'm sorry about the Jew thing.â To say that Sabini seemed bothered by his own words would be an understatement because he was completely put off by it, to Alfieâs deepest contentment.
âAre you saying you're sorry?â Patience, patience always paid back in kind.
âYeah.â
âYou're sorry about the Jew thing?â
âYeah.â
âReally?â
âYeah.â
âI want that in writing.â He turned to Ollie. Write that down. He said, âI'm sorryâ.â Looking at Sabini again he continued. âAnd also write down that all our bookies can go back to Epsom.â
âHe didn't say that.â Matteo barged in.
âWho's asking you?â
âNo. Write it down. It's all right. Come on. Alfie's an old friend.â
âMy friend.â The Jew gangster says while staring at Matteo and pointing at Sabini.
âNow, admit it, the Peaky Blinders is out of control.â
âYeah, they're out of fucking control, mate. They come down the canal, they spread like the fucking clap.â Although the kind of problem that the Blinders have gotten to the Jew were ones fairly different, the Italian didnât needed to know.
âRight. So now they're everybody's problem.â
âYeah.â
âAlfie.â
âMm.â
âYou and me, we've been fighting since we was at school.â
âYeah.â
âAll right? Now, also, we've been friends.â
âMm, yeah.â
âYou know, it goes backwards and forwards. How much better is it when we're friends?â
âOh, it's much better, mate, yeah.â
âYou write that down.â Ollie looks at Alfie that just nods at the younger man.
âSo what we're doing here, right, is we're writing down some kind of a deal thing, right?â
âYeah, a written deal.âÂ
âWritten deal, good. Well, why don't we discuss the border between the Italians and the Jews going back to Farringdon Road.â
âFarringdon Roadâ
âYeah, Farringdon Road.â
âFuck! That's ancient history.â
âWrite down Farringdon Road.â
âNo, no, no, write down Camden Road.â
âFarringdon Road.â
âCamden Road.â
âWrite down Farringdon.â
âCamden.â
âFarringdon.â
âCamden. Write down Camden Road.â
âJust write down âpeaceâ. Just write down âpeaceâ, right, between the Jews and the Italians.â
âAnd war against the gypsies.â Alfie just grumbles to the statement, thinking to himself about how Daphne will react when she discovers his plans. It certainly wonât be pretty and for the first time in a long while the Jew gangster starts to rethink his actions.
 *******************************************************************************************
Daphne was waiting at the parlour in the Shelby family home on Watery Lane, the youngest Shelby was the one who guided her there saying that his aunt was coming in a minute and then leaving her alone since Josiah had chosen to wait for her outside, in the car. The young woman took off her coat and hang it on the coat rack on the wall just beside the front door, deciding to take a look around instead of sitting down.
There were a lot of photographs hanging on the walls and on top of the furniture, most of them were of the Shelbyâs children growing up. Daphne recognized a young Ada and a little Finn in one of them, just beside the fireplace there was a photograph of each one of the Shelby siblings but what caught her attention almost immediately was the portrait of the three eldest Shelby boys in their uniforms. Her fingers automatically went to her locket, caressing the metal as a way to soothe her own thoughts.
âThey were taken just before they left.â She must have been really distracted because she only noticed that her hostess arrived when she was already closing the door, taking off her own coat and approaching her. The gipsy woman noticed that Daphne was yet again playing with the necklace hanging from her neck. They shook hands before the both of them turned to look at the images again. âIâm sorry for making you wait, there were things that needed my attention.â
âDonât bother, Iâve had only been here for minute.â Silence filled the room but unlike what Daphne expected it wasnât a discomfortable one.
âIt feels like it was a lifetime ago.â There was this hint of sadness that Daphne knew too well when people who had loved ones on the war usually had when talking about that period.
âAnd at the same time it seems like it was yesterday.â Polly looked at her then, surprise in her features.
âYouâve been there.â Daphne took a deep breath, not looking at the woman beside her when she spoke.
âYeah. Whole four years of it.â
âMy God, you must have been only a child when it started.â The young woman felt quite amused by the motherly concern in Pollyâs voice.
âEighteen.â
âYouâre almost Johnâs age then. He was nineteen when he left. Arthur was twenty seven and Thomas twenty four.â When Daphne looked at her still observing the pictures there was a hint of a smile on her face. âThey were so different, so full of life.â
âNone of us came back the same. We all left a part of ourselves there.â As her hand rested in her chest, feeling the all too familiar form of her locket through the fabric Daphne thought that she certainly had lost a part of herself there, a part of her that she would never recover.
âYou sound like Tommy.â Daphne smiled at that, shaking her head briefly while Polly observed her with a mixture of admiration and curiosity.
âItâs not the first time that I hear it.â
âCome, I will make us some tea.â They headed themselves to the kitchen were Daphne sat at the table while Polly walked around preparing things for the tea. When the pot was ready she served them both a cup and sat down.
âYouâve caused quite the impression on the boys.â Daphne quietly sipped on her tea. She didnât know what to expect of the encounter, what she did knew was that Polly was baiting at her, getting her out of her comfort zone to see how she reacted and further analyze her especially now that Alfie wasnât around. But one thing that Daphne have learned from experience was that people involuntary let their guard down at home and even knowing that Polly had another house to call her own now, this was the one she passed most part of the time in still, the one where she lived most part of the last years and the one she still called home.
âA good impression, I hope.â The gipsy woman looked at her, smirking slightly, the action a little warmer than the cold demeanor that she had showed on the party.
âAh, it was good just alright! I think Arthur is still teasing John for trying to flirt with you.â
âHe had it coming.â Polly laughed, really laughed and Daphne couldnât help but smile too.
âHe sure did, but I gotta say that he is not used at being rejected. None of them are, really.â The young woman choose not to answer that, just smiling and sipping at her tea again and Polly decided to change the subject. âYou and Ada know each other for long?â
âYeah, itâs been a while. Before Freddie fell ill.â
âYouâve met him?â Polly was surprised that the two women knew each other for that long.
âOnce or twice, he was more running from the coopers than at home.â Polly scoffed at that, getting up to take the food and put it on the table. âYou didnât approved of them.â It wasnât a question but Polly answered anyway.
âFreddie was a good man, I just wish that he knew how to prioritize his family instead of the cause.â Daphne nodded in understanding, since she befriended Ada she had had quite some debates with herself about the way the Thorneâs lived. It was hard for Daphne to understand how Ada accepted living on the run because of love, her parents were not exactly the image of true love - an arranged marriage, like the one she was supposed to have if she hadnât gone to France - even though she believed that her mother had loved her father at some point, the other way around was definitely not true.
âI never really understood how Ada accepted living like that but I donât have much to compare so I tried not to judge her for it.â
âNo lad caught your attention after you came back?â The gipsy woman took a sip of her tea before continuing. âOr during your time in France?â Daphne had a pretty good guess that she must be talking about William since she had seen them together at the party.
âNo. Not that way.â The older woman just nodded, eyes trained on the other womanâs reactions.
âNot even Solomons? He is not hard on the eyes and you two seemed quite close.â Daphne laughed at the statement - people seemed to never give up on the subject of her and Alfie being a couple.
âAlfie is family.â The way she said it, so naturally, so devoid of doubt made Polly think that their bound was deeper than she first predicted. Polly was certain that there was more to their relationship than what they let people know - Alfie Solomons wasnât a man known for his honesty or loyalty, nevertheless, the woman in front of her had been by his side since the end of the war.
It was obvious to her too that the man who was observing her and Tommy from the mezzanine during the party felt more than just friendship towards her but it seemed that Daphne didnât reciprocate it - which, apparently, left the way clear for Tommy and thatâs where the lived the danger. Then she decided to make a bold move.
âLet me read your leaves.â Daphne was quite taken aback by the request, she blinked twice before answering the gipsy woman.
âWhy not.â Polly was surprised that she accepted the request so easily - maybe more surprised by that than by the fact that she had requested to read the girlâs leaves in the first place.
âPour some tea into the cup and swirl it.â The young woman did what she was told. âNow put the tea back into the teapot.â Polly extended her hand for Daphne to give her the cup, after taking it she gave one last glance towards the young woman before starting to analyze the cup.
âThereâs happiness in your future but there is also a lot of pain.â Silence filled the room while the older woman swirled the teacup in her hands. âYou will be betrayed and have your heart broken. You will also find something that you thought was lost.â Polly rested the cup into the table and looked up to meet Daphneâs hazel eyes in silence for a long time before she finally spoke again. âYou seem like a good girl, Daphne, and if I didnât thought that I wouldnât say to you what Iâm gonna say now: be careful. Love is a good thing but sometimes it can blind us and thatâs when we get hurt.â
*******************************************************************************************
When Tommy arrived home at the end of the day one of the first things that he noticed was the teacup resting on the kitchen table. He picked it up, looking at the leaves inside it and directing his gaze to his aunt who was observing him, sipping her own cup of tea while leaning onto the kitchen counter.
âLizzieâs been here for you to read her leaves again, Poll? You still leading her ownâŚâ
âIt wasnât Lizzie.â He recognized the smug look on his auntâs face - she was leading him to something, the teacup left onto the table was a bait for him to talk to her, it was all part of her plan. He put the cup back where he found it and turned around to pour himself a drink.
âThen who was the poor soul that was believing in your predictions?â
âDaphne. She left just some minutes ago.â He stopped for a brief moment but it was enough for Polly to notice. Daphne had been here? How he didnât know that?
âDidnât think that she would be one for these kind of stuff.â He turned around, glass of whisky in his hand and her auntâs gaze still on him and his curiosity got the best of him. âWhat did you find out?â By the smile on his auntâs face he knew that this is what she wanted all along.
âThat she is a good girl - too good for you.â Tommy huffed at the statement taking a sip of his drink - he didnât need any tea leaves to know that. âShe will have her heart broken by the man that she loves.â Polly walked to her nephew, stopping right in front of him and holding his gaze. âWill you be that man, Tommy?â He just stood there nursing his drink, long before the woman had left. He had vowed to himself to never let another woman into his heart again, not after Grace, but it was difficult to remember that when he was around Daphne. She was constantly proving him wrong, challenging him, sneaking into his familyâs good graces. Would he be the one to break her heart or would it be the other way around?
*******************************************************************************************
Alfie was waiting for her when she arrived home - sitting on his usual chair in the balcony of the drawing room, humming something to himself. Daphne approached him and called his name but he didnât seemed to notice, to lost on his thoughts.
âEverything alright?â He looked at her then, his attention caught by the hand she gently placed on his shoulder, the woman could tell that he seemed a little off just by the expression on his face.
âYeah, yeah.â The Jew got up from his chair to stand in front of her. âHow was tea with the gypsies?â
âIt was just Polly. Everything went fine, she is actually very hospitable.â
âHum. Good.â He didnât seemed less tense after her answer. âIâve made you some kugel for dessert, I know it is your favorite.â Daphne frowned at that.
âThere is some special occasion that Iâm forgetting? You havenât cooked in ages.â He stared at her in silence for a long moment before answering.
âNo, just appreciating the company, love.â
âWell, thank you, kind sir. Iâm just going to take a bath and we can have dinner then.â Alfie nodded at her, letting her go upstairs while he just observed as she disappeared. He really hoped that at least for one time in his life he was doing the right thing.
*******************************************************************************************
As Tommy drove to the Carletonâs property he thought about his next steps. May had showed her interest in him and he was going to play his cards to ensure that his horse would be able to run the Epsom. She had also mentioned having contacts at the War Office and that could grant them information on Daphne. He just wasnât expecting the extent of the Carletonâs wealthiness.
âMr. Thomas Shelby, madam.â One of the maids announced him and Tommy entered the room without a second glance at the girl.
âNice house.â He says as he looks around and approaches May, who is looking at him a little unsure. It was more than nice house, probably the most expensive fucking place he had put his foot on during his entire life.
âWould you like a whisky? Scotch or Irish?â
âIrish.â She turns her back to him to serve the drink and he takes the time to look out the window, taking a cigarette from his case. âSorry for the short notice. I was passing.â
âWe're not quite on the Birmingham road.â
âIt was a small diversion.â
âSixty miles, I checked.â
âThat's a small diversion these days.â He says, approaching her and lightening the cigarette that is already between his lips.
âSo, I'm a small diversion. Good.â She hands him the whiskey before taking a sip of hers. âYour horse is still out on the gallops, but I had Mickey prepare this report. You can read it now if you'd like, then we can go see her.â May hands him the file with the reports and he rests it on the table, starting to scan the pages as he clears his throat. âIs there enough light for you to read?â
âYes, it's fine.â
âIt's getting quite late.â She sits down on the couch, Tommy doesnât react to her words and continues to read the report but he notices that she is nervous. âMickey says she has the lungs of an elephant. She's nimble in the heavy going, but bounces a little on the hard ground. Sorry, I'll let you read.â
âSo, he thinks she'll favor good to soft ground, eh?â Tommy closes the file while talking.
âA little juice in the grass.â
âMm. Well, that's good for Epsom.â He pauses, looking at her and placing his empty glass on the table. âDoes he think she's not good enough for Epsom?â
âShe needs a lot of work.â May observes as he takes a drag from the cigarette. âThe race board will need convincing.â
âI imagine you have some influence.â She doesnât answer him directly.
âMm. That's the suggested program for the next two months.â As Tommy goes back to looking at the report, May gets up from her seat. âYour glass is empty.â
âIt's fine.â
âAre you hungry?â
âYes, a bit.â
âI can prepare something.â
âDo you have engine oil?â Thereâs a hint of surprise in her features as she looks at him. âBefore I set off for Birmingham, the car needs oil.â
âI'm sure my husband kept some in the garage. I can get someone to do it.â
âThis evening or tomorrow?â They stare at each other for a moment, he waits for her next step.
âWell, we're so far from anywhere, people usually stay over.â She is clearly nervous as she takes a set at the couch again, sipping her whisky. âEspecially before cars, when it was just carriages, people used to stay over all the time.â
âBut I have a car.â
âYes.â
âAnd you have engine oil.â
âProbably.â Her words are all but a whisper before she pauses, nervously looking at the other way. âBut it would be very usual.â
âWhat would?â His eyebrows raising as he waits for the answer, making her admit it out loud.
âFor a guest to stay. We have a whole wing called the guest wing.â
âOh, youâŚâ He almost smirked at the information. âYou have a guest wing. Well...â Then Tommy notices that she is crying, silently, trying to hide her tears by facing the opposite wall. He walks to her, calling her name softly and resting a hand on her shoulder, trying to soothe her. Thomas never liked when woman cried, most part of the time it put him off because he didnât exactly know how to react and, in this particularly scenario, it wasnât something that he had predicted. âHave a smoke.â
âThank you.â She accepts the cigarette from his hands and observes as he takes a step back to light another, taking a sit at the other end of the couch. âIgnore this. It's actually all right. I put all his photos in a drawer and locked it, as if that was going to make a difference. I'm like a fucking lighthouse keeper, out here on my own, keeping his flame burning. But, of course, when anyone sees a lighthouse they stay clear, don't they?â May observes as he seems to take a moment to think.
âNow, do you have a map? Of the house. Do you have a map? Because I'm not going to be able to find my way in the dark. You see, at midnight, I'm going to leave my wing and I'm going to come find you. And I'm going to turn the handle of your bedroom door without making a sound and none of the maids will know.â
âYou don't know maids.â She scoffed at him.
âThey hear a pin drop?â
âIf there's a man in the house, they listen. They take turns.â
âSo, let them listen.â Things were going according to his plan but Tommy couldnât help remembering his auntâs words that would keep echoing inside his head for the whole night.

For the week of 27 May 2019
Quick Bits:
A Walk Through Hell #10 somehow gets even more disturbing as weâre shown some of McGregorâs past as he was abused and set up as a suicide. The horror that Garth Ennis, Goran SudĹžuka, Ive Svorcina, and Rob Steen keep exploring in this series keeps getting more personal and seemingly has no limit to its depth.
| Published by AfterShock
Amazing Spider-Man #22 concludes (mostly) the âHuntedâ arc as Kraven continues to try to convince Spider-Man that heâs a killer and to finally put Kraven out of his misery. Itâs incredibly messed up logic, but Nick Spencer, Humberto Ramos, Victor Olazaba, Edgar Delgado, Erick Arciniega, and Joe Caramagna make it interesting. You could consider this end anti-climactic, especially after how long this has been, but I get the feeling weâll be dealing with the ramifications for a while to come.
| Published by Marvel
Amber Blake #3 takes an interesting turn as an undercover operation into a modelling agency reveals that Amberâs childhood friend Amanda is still alive. The level of intrigue and twists in this story just keeps escalating, matching the density of the layouts and art from Butch Guice, Mike Perkins, and Dan Brown.
| Published by IDW
Angel #1 is incredible. Possibly even better than the Buffy the Vampire Slayer series and that has set a ridiculously high bar. Bryan Edward Hill, Gleb Melnikov, Gabriel Cassata, and Ed Dukeshire embrace the darker, moodier feel of Angel consistent with the different atmosphere that was present in the television series, while diving deep into building up his dark past and conflicted future. Thereâs a lot that is new to this interpretation, which just makes it more intriguing. And the art from Melnikov and Cassata is gorgeous.
| Published by BOOM! Studios
Ascender #2 advances the vampsâ plan to eradicate the remaining technology in the universe, as Andy is reunited with Bandit, and the vamps come to threaten him and his family. This remains an interesting new take on the Descender world from Jeff Lemire, Dustin Nguyen, and Steve Wands as we see more of whatâs happened since the end of that series.

Batman: Last Knight on Earth #1 is an interesting debut from Scott Snyder, Greg Capullo, Jonathan Glapion, FCO Plascencia, and Tom Napolitano. On its surface, itâs an âOld Man Bruceâ story, as a previously comatose Bruce awakens in a dark and strange future. But this existence is weird and unreliable. Especially as Bruce awakens in a fiction at first, being told that heâs in Arkham and that all of his villains and time as Batman were fever dreams cooked up by a fractured mind. This may well be the best art ever from Capullo, Glapion, and Plascencia.
| Published by DC Comics / Black Label
Black Science #40 shows that the story still has some surprises in store as it rockets towards the end. Also some ridiculous jokes. Matteo Scalera and Moreno Dinisio continue to inventive as hell with the art.
| Published by Image / Giant Generator
Coda #12 is the explosive, brilliant conclusion to what has been on the best series of this year and last. Si Spurrier, MatĂas Bergara, Michael Doig, and Jim Campbell have delivered some stunning flights of imagination, tapping into some highly inventive nihilistic fantasy, presenting the final battle battle this issue, and, man, does it stick the landing. Phenomenal storytelling all around.
| Published by BOOM! Studios
Daredevil #6 begins âNo Devils, Only Godâ in a New York City without Daredevil. Lalit Kumar Sharma, Jay Leisten, and Java Tartaglia come on for art duties for this arc and itâs an interesting shift. Sharmaâs style reminds me a bit of Klaus Jansonâs, but without the heavy inks and shadows.
| Published by Marvel
Detective Comics Annual #2 heads into Year Two territory as we get a new Reaper from Peter J. Tomasi, Travis Moore, Max Raynor, Tamra Bonvillain, Nick Filardi, and Rob Leigh. This is a nice use of the annual format, giving us a satisfying single issue story setting up a possible future arc.
| Published by DC Comics
The Forgotten Queen #4 brings an end to this excellent series exploring the history of Vexana, War-Monger, from Tini Howard, Amilcar Pinna, Ulises Arreola, and Jeff Powell. Very interesting depth added to the character and interesting hints as to what more might be coming, hopefully.
| Published by Valiant
Hellboy vs. Lobster Johnson: Ring of Death elaborates further on Hellboyâs time in Mexico making wrestling movies in a pair of tales from Mike Mignola, Chris Roberson, Mike Norton, Paul Grist, Dave Stewart, Bill Crabtree, and Clem Robins. Seeing a presentation of the movie Hellboy starred in is a real treat.
| Published by Dark Horse
Immortal Hulk #18 leans hard into the body horror aspect of the series, debuting both Bettyâs full form as this new Harpy and in the Abomination. Joe Bennett, Ruy JosĂŠ, and Paul Mounts just nail this perfectly.
| Published by Marvel
Killer Groove #1 is a great first issue from Ollie Masters, Eoin Marron, Jordie Bellaire, and Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou. Itâs a taut crime drama mixing a never-was musician with the potential of life as a hitman, as he lucks into a kill during a chance encounter. Great art from Marron and Bellaire.
| Published by AfterShock
The Magnificent Ms. Marvel #3 advances the alien plot, sending Kamala and her parents off to Saffa to supposedly fulfill the role of their Destined One, saving the planet again. Saladin Ahmed, Minkyu Jung, Juan Vlasco, Ian Herring, and Joe Caramagna are doing some interesting world-building here, and ensuring that nothing is quite what it seems.
| Published by Marvel
Peter Cannon: Thunderbolt #5 is the beautiful conclusion to what has been a brilliant series from Kieron Gillen, Caspar Wijngaard, Mary Safro, and Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou. Itâs been a sequel, satire, criticism, and repudiation of Watchmen, but itâs also been an interesting mediation on âbeing betterâ while coming to terms with the nature of reality and learning to deal with the human element.
| Published by Dynamite
Queen of Bad Dreams #2 gets more into the grit of IJ Weiâs investigation into the escaped figment, delivering some great police procedural stuff. The artwork from Jordi PĂŠrez and Dearbhla Kelly is wonderful. Reminding me a lot of some of the work from John Watkiss, particularly during a very impressive action sequence.
| Published by Vault
She Said Destroy #1 is an intriguing science fantasy debut from Joe Corallo, Liana Kangas, Rebecca Nalty, and Melanie Ujimori. It taps into Celtic mythology, presenting a war between Brigid and the Morrigan, but also appears to be telling a coming of age story with some members of the Morriganâs flock as they try to combat Brigidâs oppression.Â
| Published by Vault
Star Wars #108 is essentially another one-shot in the 80th anniversary of Marvel celebration, with Matthew Rosenberg and a murderersâ row of new and old Star Wars artists delivering a tale set in the old Marvel continuity. While youâll get more out of it if youâre familiar with the original series, with familiar faces like Valance Hunter, Domina Tagge, and Jaxxon, but it still works well on its own without having any foreknowledge of previous events.
| Published by Marvel
Stranger Things: Six #1 begins another prequel mini-series, this time introducing us to âSixâ and looking into the experiments going on at the Hawkins Labs, from Jody Houser, Edgar Salazar, Keith Champagne, Marissa Louise, and Nate Piekos. I quite liked the first one that served as a view into the terror that Will went through during season one, but this one looks like itâll be breaking some new ground. Very interested to see more of what happened earlier.
| Published by Dark Horse
Superman: Leviathan Rising Special #1 is a tease for Event Leviathan, the next turn in the Superman series, the forthcoming Lois Lane and Jimmy Olsen minis, and the upcoming Supergirl arc once she returns to Earth, but it also manages to tell a fairly entertaining story in its own right as Talia al Ghul kidnaps Clark Kent.
| Published by DC Comics
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #94 continues âCity at Warâ as everything gets nastier and dirtier, and we still havenât had a full-on incendiary spark yet to ignite even larger warfare. Dave Wachter and Ronda Pattison deliver some incredible artwork. Splinter is very chilling in this one.
| Published by IDW
Thor #13 will make you care about Cul Borson. At least, a little bit. Maybe. Jason Aaron, Mike del Mundo, Marco DâAlfonso, and Joe Sabino deliver on another single issue story broadening the bits and pieces of the War of the Realms.
| Published by Marvel
Transformers #6 takes a break from the ongoing narrative and gives us a look into the past friendship between Megatron and Orion Pax, from Brian Ruckley, Beth McGuire-Smith, and Tom B. Long. There are some interesting parallels between Megatronâs observations and the drifting apart of these two old friends.
| Published by IDW
Wolverine: The Long Night #5 concludes this adaptation of the podcast of the same name from Benjamin Percy, Marcio Takara, Matt Milla, and Joe Caramagna. This has been a mature, psychological thriller amidst all of the violence and darkness, with this final chapter delivering more twists even as it brings the answers.

Quick Bits:
Action Comics #1011 is the last stop before Event Leviathan starts in earnest and it raises more questions as to whatâs going on. Brian Michael Bendis, Steve Epting, Brad Anderson, and Josh Reed have done a great job elevating tension through this lead-up and moving the pieces around the board.
| Published by DC Comics
Assassin Nation #3 is another brutal issue from Kyle Starks, Erica Henderson, and Deron Bennett. The body count remains high and we get more questions about who authorized the hit. Thereâs some hints that it may all just be misdirection.
| Published by Image / Skybound
Detective Comics #1004 gives us the life history of Astrid Arkham. Itâs told largely in full page montages, really allowing Brad Walker, Andrew Hennessy, and Nathan Fairbairn to cut loose on the visuals.
| Published by DC Comics
Faithless #2 sees Faith go to a party, and then it gets weird. This feels like that Griffin Dunne film of him wandering around New York, only with more magic and gorgeous art from Maria Llovet.
| Published by BOOM! Studios
Ghost Tree #2 delivers well on the promise of the first issue, going further with Brandtâs conversations with the spirits around the ghost tree, and setting up the possibility of something horrible coming soon. More gorgeous artwork from Simon Gane, Ian Herring, and Becka Kinzie.
| Published by IDW
Incursion #4 is a fitting conclusion to this series bringing Gilad back to a regular status in the world of the living, with some interesting teases as to what might be further down the line, from Andy Diggle, Alex Paknadel, Doug Braithwaite, Diego Rodriguez, Leonardo Paciarotti, and Marshall Dillon.
| Published by Valiant
Justice League Dark #11 continues âLords of Orderâ and keeps burning down the magical side of the DC Universe, while diving very deep into the back catalogue to build up the new. James Tynion IV is developing a very interesting structure for what might be coming.
| Published by DC Comics
Middlewest #7 shows the sheer devastation that Abel can unleash as his powers manifest, similar to the rage that his father has shown, and how his newfound âfamilyâ can also let him down horribly. Great work from Skottie Young, Jorge Corona, Jean-Francois Beaulieu, and Nate Piekos as the story seems to be headed for more dangerous waters.

Star Wars: Age of Rebellion - Jabba the Hutt #1 is an entertaining little story of how Jabba manipulates others to accomplish his goals.

First fanfic: Charlotte Russo: The Lost Angel of Empire Bay (Vito Scaletta x OC)Â Introduction
Hey everyone, thanks so much for the support Iâve received with my transition to this blog. Itâs time that I post my first fanfic to this blog. This story will follow a character from a fandom thatâs not very well known, but deserves to be recognized, nonetheless. Vito Scaletta from Mafia 2 & 3. I played Mafia 3 first and absolutely fell in love with Vito, so I decided to play Mafia 2 as well. I canât tell you which one I like better, I love them both equally. I highly recommend everyone who loves open world GTA-type games to play this game. Itâs funny, action packed, emotional at times, and filled with plenty of colorful characters. Players be warned, however, that the game is rated M and deals with mature themes such as drug use, sex, cursing, violence, basically anything youâd expect from a GTA/Godfather mashup. Keep in mind that the fanfic will also be of a similar rating, though I will provide a trigger warning at the beginning of each chapter, as well as a word count and a general rating of each story. Alright, enough chit-chat. Iâd like to introduce you to the OC of the evening: Charlotte Russo.
Charlotte Russo: Mafia 2
Charlotte Russo: The Blissful AngelÂ
Charlotte Russo: Mafia 3
Basic Stats:
Name: Charlotte Russo, âBig Titsâ Charlie Alfonsi
Age: 19 (beginning), 42 (near the end)
Sex/Gender/Pronouns: Female, Woman, she/her
Race/Ethnicity: Italian
Fandom: Mafia
Background: Charlotteâs family emigrated from Sicily to Empire Bay in 1927 when her mother was pregnant with her. Â Marco began working for Frank Vinci and built up a reasonable living. He planned to will his eldest daughter, Alessandra, the business, but she married and moved away as soon as she could. Charlotte became her fatherâs golden child, the one who would carry on the legacy and see the business out. When Charlotte was eighteen, her father was involved in a risky hit and was killed in the process. Don Frank Vinci severed ties with the family, but provided a certain amount of protection for them to survive off of until they got back on their feet. In the meantime, Charlotte scrambled to get a steady job and keep food on the table, electricity on in their tiny apartment, and a roof over their heads.
Appearance:
Figure/Eyes/Skin/Hair/Other: Charlotte has a thick, pair shaped figure with an average bust and full hips. She has tawny eyes, olive skin, and charcoal black hair with bangs across her forehead, full lips, a freckle on her cheek, and a scar cutting down the bridge of her nose.
Dress style: She typically dresses comfortably, but appropriate for her job. What that job is often varies from a dancer in a cathouse (lingerie) to running hits on the streets for her boss (jeans and a blouse).
Relationships:
Parents: Marco and Gianna Russo. Charlotte was always a daddyâs girl. She picked up much from her father including her strength, fighting skills, and her taste for fancy cigars. The death of her father tore Charlotte up, it was hard for her to think of much else for a while afterwards, but she was forced to keep moving to keep money coming in. Her mother isnât exactly the same story. Charlotte picked up cooking and cleaning skills, many things that would make a good housewife, but she was never drawn to that path. She preferred the life of crime and action, like her father. Gianna didnât take her husbandâs death well. She started drinking to wash away the pain, but she wasnât a happy drunk. When she was drunk, everything came out. Secrets, insults, truths that no one wants to hear, and a side of Gianni that she would be ashamed of sober. Charlotteâs relationship with Gianni was never great, they always fought over Charlotteâs future and wellbeing, which would drive a wedge between the two in their final years of communication.
Siblings: Alessandra Russo-Lombardi was ten years old when Charlotte was born. At the ripe, young age of 21, Alessandra married her high school sweetheart and moved far away from Empire Bay. She still maintains a good relationship with Charlotte, calling every couple of months to check in, but is mostly estranged from the rest of her family.
Love interest(s): Vito Scaletta, the mysterious man who saved her life and took her under his wing to show the ways of casual crime.
Friends: Margaret Young, a close friend and neighbor since Charlotte could remember. Their mothers were both stay at home moms, and her father owned a small bakery below Charlotteâs apartment. The two worked together between cathouses and department stores, and their bond often felt more like sisters than friends. Joe Barbaro was a friend of Vito who helped introduce Charlotte into the crime world. Matteo Ricci was a young man who Charlotte saves at some point in the story, and for her charity, Matteo sets out to repay her by giving back to the world in some way. Ronnie Espinoza, the only friend Charlotte has to depend on when she is at her lowest. More on him in the fic.
Enemies: Sidney âThe Fat Manâ Penn was an ex-boss of Charlotte, Lorenzo Alfonsi was Charlotteâs ex-husband from a loveless marriage, and Sal Marcano attempted to work with Charlotte under impossible terms and set out to have her killed when she didnât agree to them. More on all of them in the story.
Sexuality and Romance:
Sexuality: Pansexual
Attraction: Charlotte was a butt person. She loved a nice, plump ass on men and women that she could pinch or smack during intercourse.
Experience: Charlotte experimented a little before finding Vito. She had a steady boyfriend for about a year before she found out he cheated on her, and a girlfriend who moved away and never contacted her again.
Skills and Work Life:
Skills: Charlotte learned how to take care of a house and a child from her mother, skills she retained her whole life. She learned how to defend herself and handle a knife from her father, and she learned how to drive and shoot a gun from Vito. Charlotte always had a knack for performance. She loved to sing, dance, and act both in public and private.
Hobbies: In her downtime, Charlotte loved to read, and secretly enjoyed to sew. She always wanted to be a seamstress as a child, a dream she secretly retained through her adult life.
Education: Charlotte had a middle school education, but was forced to drop out when her family couldnât afford it anymore. She knows how to speak English and Italian.
Job: Dancer in a cathouse, made woman under Alberto Clemente, seamstress.
Personal:
Theme Songs: Troublemaker by Olly Murs, Bottom of the River by Delta Rae
Personality: Charlotte was a family girl, always taking steps to protect her team over herself. She liked to develop a first name basis with everyone she worked with to show a form of mutual respect. She was a tough cookie, but she managed to keep her emotions in check pretty well. It took a lot to break her, but when you do, be prepared. Her anger was scary, and her sadness usually results
Likes: Cars, clothes, jewelry, classic literature, jazz music, dancing
Dislikes: Not getting her way, cucumbers, liars, cheaters,
Philosophy:
Colors: Blue, purple, red, black
Beliefs/Spirituality: She grew up Catholic and retains general Christian beliefs, but sheâs not a very good Christian.Â
Fears: Death, dogs, wasps, knives, betrayal
Goals: To get out of Empire Bay, to survive in the mafia world, to become rich enough and settle down with Vito, other goals revealed in the fic.
Other
The titles of the chapters are lyrics from songs I associate with major scenes throughout the chapter. Iâll release the soundtrack after I finish the story as there will be some major spoilers within the soundtrack.Â
Each chapter will be pretty long, around 6000 words each.Â
I used this avatar creator to design them Charlotteâs avatars: http://www.azaleasdolls.com/dressupgames/1940s-fashion.phpÂ
As Charlotte was present for many events from Mafia 2, the story is written as a documentary, titled âCharlotte Russo: The Lost Angel of Empire Bay.â I did this so I wouldnât have to recap events from the game that just had Charlotte shoehorned in. Thus the story is split into different narrative styles. The narrative of the story will follow a similar structure as Mafia 3, told through flashbacks and interviews like a documentary. The formatting for each POV will look different, so I'll provide a key here to explain it.
Documentary narration
"Interviews" âPerson's Name
Time period
Charlotteâs narration
The investigator of the documentary is going to be Jonathan Maguire from Mafia 3. I know he was only investigating the Lincoln Clay files, but Iâm gonna level with you guys, Iâm too lazy to make my own. :PÂ

Issac just appears to be getting nastier each week. what a manipulative bastard. Even when he's not being directly nasty he's making a mockery of Dom one way or another. Pretty sure he sabotaged Dom's chance to shine in theatre. Apparently he's going to sleep with jez to team him a lesson. Can definitely see this maybe becoming physical at some point dowen the line. Also what do you think of matteo's character ? And are you sad to see Cam go?:-) X
Isaac is just the most spiteful character on Holby City right now! Everything that he does is just for personal gain. For example, the thing in theatre, he knew Dom had the capability of executing the procedure, but due to the fact that it was such an expert operation, Isaac wanted to make sure that he did it to get the praise. I too read about the âsleeping with Jez to teach Dom a lessonâ and it is absolute crap! You donât just sleep with someone to teach your partner a lesson, thatâs not how it works! Iâm assuming Isaac does it because Jez is seen âflirtingâ with Dom on the ward, but that is no reason for Isaac to bump uglies with Jez. I can definitely see this relationship getting physical at some point, and no one is going to be prepared for it at all!Â
At the start, I was okay with Matteo. He wasnât too obnoxious, just a mediocre character. I was really starting to like him, then last night happened! He knew that he could push Ollie out the way to get funding for the Digby Stent 2.0 because it was Jacâs original idea. I just hope that next week Jac kisses Matteo for professional gain like Iâve mentioned before.Â
Not really fussed about Cameron tbh, because we didnât see much of him, I didnât grow a huge fondness for him. And I am very glad that Morven didnât develop feels for him in that way because it would have been an extra storyline that wasnât needed. XÂ
