summary: fem!reader has been avoiding max for weeks because she’s jealous of lucas, and has been supressing her feelings for max for years, until one day they have a confrontation and everything comes out.

“Why are you being like this?” Max cries, shaking with anger and confusion.

You had been avoiding Max for weeks now, telling your mother to say you were busy whenever she called, never speaking to her when you and the party hung out, and taking different routes when walking to your classes at school to steer clear of her. It didn’t take long for her to catch on, she was very observant, and the guilt of whatever she suspected she had done had been eating her alive. She finally snapped when she cornered you on your way to fifth period, and dragged you into a janitor’s closet so you could admit why you had been acting this way.

Now, she was gripping onto your shoulders and making deep eye contact with you, begging you to say something, anything.

“I don’t know what you mean.” you look down at your sneakers, playing dumb.

Max rolled her eyes, scoffing. “Cut the bullshit. You’ve been blatantly ignoring me for weeks now. What the hell is going on with you? What did I do to make you hate me so much?”

You breathe in deeply, closing your eyes and pinching the bridge of your nose. “I don’t hate you, Max. I could never hate you. I hate him. Lucas.” You raise your gaze to meet her stare, studying her expression as she takes in what you said.

Max furrows her eyebrows, cheeks tinted slightly pink. “Why do you hate Lucas?” Her light blue eyes were filled with confusion.

“Because…for years, ever since you guys have been going out, I feel like I’ve always had to compete with him for you. And you’ve always chosen him. Before you even liked him, all you wanted to do was spend time with me. And now, it’s like you’ve totally forgotten about that summer. You know what I’m talking about, Max.” Your voice wavers slightly as you choke out the words you’ve been holding in for so long.

Max’s face falls, and she immediately pulls her hands off of you.

“Thats what this is about? One summer a few years ago where we…we had a little fun together? You know it’s not like that anymore; you know I’m not like that, right?”

Your expression falters, but you immediately fire back.

“Well I’m sorry for thinking that maybe us kissing was something? Or maybe you’ve just forgotten because everything you do now revolves around your boyfriend. But I guess I was right. You’re better off with Lucas.”

Then you open the door to the closet harshly, swiftly leaving behind a stunned and upset Max, and slamming it behind you, not even pausing to wait for her reaction.

“Mikey sit still,” you sighed as you carefully applied eyeliner to your boyfriend’s under eyes.

Mike smiled, just happy to be there with you as you sat on his lap. You had begged and begged for days until he finally gave in and agreed to let you do his makeup. He trusted you to do this, and you could tell that by the way he looked up at you with his gorgeous doe eyes and long black eyelashes, how his pale cheeks flushed red every time you pressed a light kiss to his jaw, and how his full pink lips curved up into a smile every time you made eye contact with him. He was perfect, you had decided as you studied his features. It was a wonder to him why you even liked him, considering he was part of the “freak” club, was antisocial, and all around not very good looking in his opinion, and you were the sun in his eyes. You were bright and bubbly, on the cheer squad, always dressed in pink…

And yet, despite Mike’s doubts, you were perfect for each other. You decided that it was time for lipstick, so you reached over and got it from your makeup bag. Then, you swiftly applied it to your lips, amused by Mike’s confused reaction. He thought you were going to put it on him. You smirked, deciding to further his perplexity by leaning down to meet his lips, feeling his grip tighten on your waist and his head tilting upwards to connect your lips in a slow, passionate kiss that made his mind hazy. It wasn’t inherently sexual, it was more sensual and loving. Your fingers lazily wove their way into his unruly curls, and his fingers scratched gently up and down your back.

You could stay like this forever.

But you eventually pulled back, breathing in deeply and taking in the beautiful appearance of the apples of his cheeks tinted a red colour, the faint sound of him panting, and his hair slightly ruffled. He was majestic. You also grinned proudly at the lipstick that now coated his lips. A bit of it was smeared on the side of his mouth, so you took your thumb and gazed into his eyes while you wiped it off.

“Now you have lipstick on, pretty boy.”

she would ramble about how ”it’s totally fine if you don’t want to. you don’t have to”

but you cut her off with smile and said ”of course” and wrote your number on her receipt. she was soooo relieved, & extremely happy

the first date was very awkward, mainly because she has a hard time opening up to people

eventually, she did reveal her past, living in hawkins, losing her brother, etc

it took a while for her to say she loved you, and when she did she made sure she told you everyday afterwards

sharing clothes!!!!! especially during the wintertime, you’ll give her your red scarf to keep you warm. it’s her prized possession.
