Ben Morris - Pocket Guides - folk + big band (and some King Crimson sounds in “Edvard” - as heard on djPeter’s show on WVUD last night)

Writing for his large, uniquely-voiced ensemble, and with Influences ranging from traditional Norwegian folk music, modern jazz, and contemporary classical music, composer/pianist Ben Morris' dynamic debut surprises and captivates. With his core group—Zosha Warpeha on Norwegian Hardanger fiddle and violin, Juan Olivares on clarinet, Dan Montgomery on bass, Evan Hyde on drums, and Ben on piano—he was invited to premier four original pieces at the Newport Jazz Festival in 2019, setting in motion the inspiration to expand the ensemble & compositions to create "Pocket Guides." With visions of bustling foreign cities, Norse mythology, tundra and waterways, Morris's music is cinematic, surprising and visceral, the rich textures reflecting his experiences living and studying in Norway, Korea, Florida, Texas, New Jersey, and now Colorado.

El Confesionario | ¿Y si tuvieras que correr para vivir, qué harías?

Ray Zubiri | @RayZubiri Esta semana les platico sobre la historia que protagonizan dos hermanos tarahumaras en eterna competencia entre ellos y con un talento único para correr. Uno de ellos podría convertirse en el mejor corredor de maratón de todos los tiempos, mientras que el otro ingresa a las filas del crimen organizado como corredor de drogas entre territorios enemigos. Cuando el hermano mayor pierde un importante cargamento de drogas, queda endeudado para siempre con los cárteles, poniendo en riesgo su vida y a su familia. Esto los llevará a emprender una búsqueda en la que el hermano menor tendrá que enfrentar el dilema de cumplir sus sueños o empezar a transportar drogas para preservar su vida y la de su familia. Juntos deben arriesgarlo todo con la esperanza de liberarse del mundo criminal esclavizante, en busca de la libertad y la realización de sus sueños. En una charla con parte del elenco de la cinta, Gerardo Dorantes, director de esta película, me platicó sobre el origen de este proyecto, cuyo objetivo es capturar, desde una óptica personal, el fenómeno mediante el cual la delincuencia organizada ha penetrado en el corazón de la región tarahumara y de su comunidad, aprovechándose de sus difíciles condiciones económicas y trastocando su percepción del mundo y sus aspiraciones. Si bien retrata una realidad cruda, este filme busca dejar en la audiencia un sentimiento esperanzador –no por ello ingenuo– de que, pese a lo hostil que sea la vida, el sacrificio y la voluntad humana son capaces de logros inimaginables. La película fue producida por Varios Lobos, 9 mm y SuDosis, rodada en locaciones mexicanas, en la Huasca de Ocampo en Hidalgo y la Sierra Tarahumara en Chihuahua, escenarios que muestran la grandeza de la naturaleza y que desafían la supervivencia del ser humano. Selva, montaña y llanura retratados bajo el lente del cinematógrafo mexicano Emiliano Villanueva (Una película de policías, 2021). Algo que les tengo que advertir es que hay unos paisajes increíbles retratados magistralmente en la pantalla grande y unas escenas de acción con muchos disparos, persecuciones y muy buenas coreografías. Corre para vivir es un thriller natural, entretenido, movido y que representara de forma real lo que viven los jóvenes al ser reclutados. Más allá de si hubo intereses culturales o no –que sí están siempre presentes– la idea era combinar un cine comercial y entretenido, de una gran manufactura, con un contexto social y lograr dar a conocer más acerca de la comunidad rarámuri. El elenco es bastante bueno. Está Vladimir Rivera Mata (Narcos: México, 2021), Manuel Cruz Vivas (Radical, 2023), Eligio Meléndez (Sueño en otro idioma, 2017), Mayra Sérbulo (Espiral, 2008), Emma Malacara (Lo que la gente cuenta, 2022) y Osvaldo Sánchez (Mis demonios nunca juraron soledad, 2017). Affective Encounters on and off the dOCUMENTA(13) Trail is a situated story that intimately explores artistic expectations, curatorial tensions, and the emotions that accompany unexpected but extraordinary encounters during a residency at dOCUMENTA(13). Vital agents that mediate our visit to this exhibition event include Robinson, a Chilean street artist and undocumented migrant that was an active part of the d’Occupy camp. When Robinson is ejected from exhibition spaces, searched by the police, attacked by Neonazis, and rendered homeless on the closing night of dOCUMENTA(13)’s celebrations, we attempt to ask critical questions about his routine harassment, accompanying interpellations of race, and the migrant tensions prevalent in contemporary Germany. A latter chapter introduces Eriza, a baby hedgehog we found at the foot of our door, who led us to our favorite dOCUMENTA(13) artwork. The journey ends with an auto-ethnography as the directors come into dangerous contact with a vigilante on Berlin’s subway. The film features guest appearances by Jimmie Durham and Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev, amongst other visitors to this landmark event.

10 years ago today we lost a very special kinship with Eriza,* a tiny hedgehog we met in Kassel during our residency at dOCUMENTA(13). Eriza offered us an affective introduction to the plight of wildlife in need of assistance and response-ability, which continues to make an impact on our extended practice today. Our four days of glorious intimacy does not make sense if you translate it under the logic of teleological time — our four days offered a fractal entanglement of profound and deep spacetime. Sin Kabeza Productions' "Affective Encounters on and off the dOCUMENTA(13) Trail" is a situated story that intimately explores artistic expectations, curatorial tensions, and the emotions that accompany unexpected but extraordinary encounters during a residency at dOCUMENTA(13). Vital agents that mediate our visit to this exhibition event include Robinson, a Chilean street artist and undocumented migrant that was an active part of the d’Occupy camp. When Robinson is ejected from exhibition spaces, searched by the police, attacked by Neonazis, and rendered homeless on the closing night of dOCUMENTA(13)’s celebrations, we attempt to ask critical questions about his routine harassment, accompanying interpellations of race, and the migrant tensions prevalent in contemporary Germany. A latter chapter introduces Eriza, a baby hedgehog we found at the foot of our door, who led us to our favorite dOCUMENTA(13) artwork. The journey ends with an auto-ethnography as the directors come into dangerous contact with a vigilante on Berlin’s subway. The film features guest appearances by Jimmie Durham and Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev, amongst other visitors to this landmark event.

Who is Jon Olivares, the ‘Joxe Mari’ of Patria?: Many will know him as ‘Joxe Mari’, his character in Homeland, but tonight, actor Jon Olivares enters El Faro under the pseudonym ‘Olivo’, as his own has always called him. In the first minutes of this conversation, he travels to his seas: the Cantabrian and the Canary. Jon has been dedicating himself to acting for several years, especially in theater, but what happened this year with the premiere of the audiovisual adaptation of Fernando Aramburu’s novel for HBO, ‘Patria’, has changed everything.

In the fiction, which narrates the life of two families traversed by the ETA drama in the Basque Country, Jon gives life to ‘Joxe Mari’, the ETA member of one of the families who is involved in the murder that underpins the original story of Aramburu. When they called him to do the casting, he was rehearsing theater, they asked him for a book and he didn’t have one, he sent a practically amateur video of a function. They got it. “That day they told me that he was sick in bed, my fever, and everything went away,” he explained. Since then he has been riding a wave of news that he tries to assimilate.

But before all this, there were thousands of Jons inhabiting this ‘Olive Tree’. It is possible to think that sometimes we are what we were in the summers of our childhood, of our youth. This Gatopardo is raised in Osintxu, several kilometers from Bergara, Guipuzkoa province. But his summers were in the Canary Islands, the complete opposite of the life shared with his gang in that Basque town of four hundred inhabitants. He recognizes that this duality was fundamental for his way of seeing the world, for his multiple identifications of it. The young man who grew up among those, few, houses, and among the sea of ​​the islands, one day saw a child with Down Syndrome with his mother and said: “What does a child have and how does he learn? someone like that’s teacher, I want to teach him. ” Years later he managed to teach and tenderly relates how every morning he entered the classroom wanting to make his students better.
