Get your limited edition Midnight Robber in honor of the late Brian Honoré #brianhonore only available at @rebelentouragemovement Midnight Robber is one of the most widely recognized and well-liked traditional carnival characters.  Marked not only by his costuming, that includes a wide-brimmed hat and cape, the robber is also noted for use of “Robber Talk”: a boastful, articulate, and rhyming catalog of the robber’s deeds, conquests, history, and various abilities that often approach the supernatural.  A conflation of many cultural influences, the most easily recognized influence on the robber is the costume profile and mannerisms of old west novels and cinema. A robber often relates his great ancestry as well, which, accompanied by a rhythmic use of language and a detailed chronology has lead many say that ”Robber Talk” is derived from the tradition of the West African Griot (storyteller). Themes of speeches and confrontations between robbers often include quotations, rhetorical pyrotechnics, riddles, and allusions to popular history, religion, and mythology.  Robber Masqueraders often have a variety of skulls on their person, and have been known to carry weapons (knives, swords, and guns) and coffins.  In all cases, Robbers use a shrill “scout” whistle to punctuate their speeches and command the attention of an audience. #oldmascollection #midnightrobber #damelorraine #jabjab #olemas #trinidadcarnival #trinidadcarnival2017 #rebelentourageclothing #exclusiveapparel #rebelentourage #carnivaltradition #oldmeetsnew #urbanapparel #urbanclothing #trinidadmas #oldmas #oldmastradition #trinidadheritage #tshirtdesigns #trinidadstyle #trinidadfashion #IamRebel #bethemovement #rebelgear #rebelentouragemovement #carnivalcraze

The simple costume consists of short pants or pants cut off at the knee, with a wire tail, mask and horns and a pitchfork. The jab malassie would carry chains, and wear locks and keys around his waist, and carry a pitch fork. The whole body is smeared with grease or mud, red, green or blue paint. The jab molassie "wines" or gyrates to a rhythmic beat that is played on tins or pans by his imps. While some of his imps supply the music, others hold his chain, seemingly restraining him as he pulls against them in his wild dance. #oldmascollection #midnightrobber #damelorraine #jabjab #olemas #trinidadcarnival #trinidadcarnival2017 #rebelentourageclothing #exclusiveapparel #rebelentourage #carnivaltradition #oldmeetsnew #urbanapparel #urbanclothing #trinidadmas #oldmas #oldmastradition #trinidadheritage #tshirtdesigns #trinidadstyle #trinidadfashion #bethemovement #rebelentouragemovement #rebelgear #IamRebel #carnivalcraze #carnival2017

Dame Lorraine or Dame Lorine was imitative of the mas played by the 18th and early 19th century French planters, who would dress up in elegant costumes of the French aristocracy and parade in groups at private homes, particularly on Carnival Sunday night. They also performed the sophisticated dances of the period. The slaves recreated these costumes complete with elaborate fans and hats to imitate the planters’ wives. Over the years, the Dame Lorraine costume became more exaggerated; The tune which became associated with the Dame Lorraines still exists, heavily padded breasts and large buttocks. It picked up so much popularity that it wasn’t only enslaved women but men and even  descendents of the planters. #oldmascollection #midnightrobber #damelorraine #jabjab #olemas #trinidadcarnival #trinidadcarnival2017 #rebelentourageclothing #exclusiveapparel #rebelentourage #carnivaltradition #oldmeetsnew #urbanapparel #urbanclothing #trinidadmas #oldmas #oldmastradition #trinidadheritage #tshirtdesigns #trinidadstyle #trinidadfashion #bethemovement #rebelentouragemovement #rebelgear #IamRebel #carnivalcraze
