OLDER BUDGET TRAVELLERS FACE UPHEAVAL OVER AIRPORT BUS/ LIGHT RAIL CHANGES

Older travellers to the Gold Coast used to catching a bus from the airport to hotels in Surfers Paradise are facing major disruptions and safety risks now because of the light rail system.

Gold Coast lawyer Bruce Simmonds says changes to the Gold Coast bus system mean airport travellers can now only get a bus from the airport to the Broadbeach light rail station and are expected to use light rail or taxis to reach their hotels in Surfers.

He said older travellers could be at risk of injury trying to lug bags to and from the trams and light rail stops in Surfers and on Friday and Saturday evenings would have to share the trams with rowdy or drunken revellers out on the town.

“There are risks to older travellers, most of whom are on a tight budget, that don’t seem to have been thought about with the re-jig of bus services and the start of the light rail,” he said.

Mr Simmonds, an injury compensation law expert with Broadbeach law firm Parker Simmonds Solicitors and Lawyers, said he understood airport buses now terminated at Broadbeach and travellers were expected to change to the light rail system.

“This is going to be a serious inconvenience to older visitors and also pose some safety risks for them, hauling bags to and from the trams, maybe in the rain and at night. In the past the bus drivers could drop them close by or at their hotels. Now they have to get themselves from tram stops to the hotels.

“It may not seem a big issue to able bodied people but to a significant number of older, budget visitors to the Gold Coast it is an unnecessary hassle with some elements of risk too,” Mr Simmonds said.

Mr Simmonds said the risks were further complicated by the fact that a person injured carting bags across the street may not be entitled to claim any compensation for it.

“Unless you can show negligence or poorly maintained streets and kerbs it’s one of those things, nobody is really to blame. What’s sad though is the way we are imposing this on our visitors when the previous system worked well,” he said.

Mr Simmonds said older visitors arriving at the airport could not always afford taxis with fares to Broadbeach costing more than $50. It seemed the bus changes were aimed at channelling more passengers on to the light rail system.

“Given the risks for older visitors carting luggage between buses and trams on busy streets I’d be advising them to make sure they have travel insurance before coming here,” he said.

“Struggling with bags across the busy Gold Coast Highway, possibly in the rain or having to cope with drunks on the night trams is not the message we want to send to our visitors,” Mr Simmonds said.
