Enacting an “insta series” on my weekly coffee explorations within Philadelphia with @amanda_mmd3 ---- Today, we decided to start out from a referral from one of my friends (@elly_nem) and hit up Old City Coffee (@oldcitycoffee) in Old City, Philadelphia. I’ve heard great things, read great reviews, and decided this would be a great place to start our journey! To get to the shop, you have to walk down a cobblestone street, so of course, it has a very charming appeal upon entering the business. As soon as you open the blue door, you’re welcomed into a beautifully-presented shop. So naturally I could barely see over the counter because I stand at only 5 feet tall, but the staff was extremely friendly and we made eye contact so that's all that matters! Anyways, I was saddened to see that it only offer a “Coffee of the Day” brew rather than having a multitude of flavors and roasts, but it keeps it interesting and forces you to not always consume the same thing every day. After ordering a medium cup, I was also surprised that it was self-serve. I’m not the best at “making coffee” so I really wish someone did it for me... Sadly, we got the end of the batch so the coffee’s aftertaste presented a bitter, burnt flavor, but all in all, I enjoyed this spot. The coffee was very mild with a fresh, mild taste nonetheless (it was a Costa Rica brew). We were able to find a marble table big enough for the two of us, connect to wifi (xfinity), and complete work, which was the objective of our adventure, while enjoying a cup of coffee. But, I feel like the shop could’ve offered a more cozy, artistic, or trendy vibe in the sitting area. Anyways, I’m no coffee connoisseur, but I give this place an 7.8/10 rating.

Retail Therapy & Cafe Culture

Philadelphia is no longer a secret; Brooklynites are moving here in droves. Are our subways foul and still operated via slot-and-token? Sure. Does racial and class tension ricochet off the newly constructed condo complexes in Graduate Hospital? Definitely. Are our sports fan rabid? No idea, don’t care. 

What I do know is that culture and cuisine are alive and well in Philadelphia. Citizens of all kinds appreciate our city’s distinct neighborhoods, diverse ethnic heritage, and lively student body. Artists move here for collaboration opportunities. Theater companies take root. Restauranteurs and entrepreneurs take chances. Philadelphia slakes epicurean urges. 

Below are a few of my favorite bliss spots to spend money and waste time with no regrets.

Down Dog Healing Cafe is the least snobby Ayurvedic cafe you’ll meet. I typically snuggle into a window seat with my laptop and coffee, and highly recommend their honey turmeric lemonade for kicking colds or allergies!

Passyunk Avenue is hot for hipsters and homemakers. Offering the best food-per-square foot ratio in the city, it is also home to delectable shops like Volta Market. Volta solves my stocking stuffer dilemma every year.

Most of Vagabond Boutique’s gorgeous raw linen tunics would look terrible on my sturdy 5′2″ frame, but a girl can dream. This Old City landmark is always a joy to swing by, and has contributed treasured staple items to my closet over the years. Those who enter weary will leave rejuvenated by the smell of leather.

Just around the corner from Vagabond is Old City Coffee, a go-to spot for creative meetings that conjure my previous life as a theater rat. Grab one of the best chocolate chip cookies in the city from one of the giant cookie jars, and get inspired. It’s worth noting that Old City Coffee has answered my catering needs with flying colors, for anyone looking to class up a meeting or gathering.

Though I may be biased since PAFA’s museum is my wedding venue, I stand firm in my belief that its gift shop is the best in the city. I rarely leave without a new textile or trinket, and touch most items in the store. From the soft-as-snow Jellycat stuffed animals to their handmade greeting cards, this store renews faith in humans as producers of good things.

The most perfect flower I've ever photographed. This little beaut is known as a #BalloonFlower, due to the close resemblance of it's buds to hot air balloons.
