Is there a purpose for Photorealism?

Photorealism is an art genre where painting and drawings are to be so realistic that it is difficult to distinguish from a photograph. ‘‘The art movement began in America during the 1960s and was influenced by Pop Art - like pop artists, photorealists were inspired by everyday objects, scenes of commercial life and modern-day consumerism’’ (Plus One Gallery, 2016). A lot of criticism picked up in the late 1960s when photorealists admitted to the use of photographs in photorealism. Devices to help artists have been used since the 15th century. Even the artist Johannes Vermeer is believed to have used mirroring techniques to photographically paint his subjects before the invention of a camera. However, photorealists still receive a lot of judgement for their methods. My aim in this essay is to understand if the criticism directed at Photorealism is justified; and I'll be looking at Photorealists such as Chuck Close and Kelvin Okafor to understand their thoughts and processes.

“Photorealism requires no imagination or understanding, just an admiration of technical skill and patience” (Caterwall, n.d.). Drawing and replicating a photograph does not produce any creative invention, but it is admired by the masses because a photorealistic image takes time and skill. The very popular Chuck Close uses a grid method to paint from photographs accurately. The grid method allows him to turn the original photo into a larger, impressive painting but you could argue that it lacks imagination. Even though Chuck Close is a photorealist there is still a purpose behind his portrait paintings; ‘’Neurologically, I'm a quadriplegic, so virtually everything about my work has been driven by my learning disabilities and my lack of facial recognition, which I'm sure is what drove me to paint portraits in the first place.’’ Chuck’s face blindness means that he can’t paint from life as one little movement from his sitter would make it look like a completely different image. He uses the grid method as a way of remembering the faces of people that were close to him and this gives his work a lot more significance. I would say that if there is no intention behind a photorealist piece then it is just a showcase of technical skill.

If you can't distinguish the painting from the photo it may as well just stay as it was. Spending hours on a drawing that looks exactly like a photograph seems less satisfying then creating something new and original. Painting something realistically whilst maintaining painterly qualities enhances the feeling of authenticity; thereby allowing viewers to create a closer connection to the painting and painter. The style of a photorealist artist is based on their materials and the size of the canvas they use, not down to how they portray their subject matter. ‘’Photorealist’s distance themselves from adding emotion and intent into their work’’ this means its less likely to find expressive brush work and imperfections that evoke emotions. I believe this is a big factor as to why critics refuse to call it real art. But if art is just about expression and evoking emotion then it would be easy to dismiss photorealism, however, we also have to value the process of creation and admire the shift from a blank canvas to the illusion of reality.

The truth is that It's fun. Photorealism is like a type of magic, an illusion of giving a flat sheet a sense of real depth. “Trompe-l'oeil, French for 'deceive the eye') is an art technique that uses realistic imagery to create the optical illusion that the depicted objects exist in three dimensions. I believe photorealism is very similar to trompe-l’oeil with a stronger focus on tone. Sometimes this type of art makes you double check as at first glance you thought it was a photo, and often I’m amazed by the materials used to create such masterpieces. For example, the detail Oscar Okonu creates in his work using a ball point-pen is incredible. ‘Each work takes him over 100 hours to complete, and he estimates that he gets through approximately ten pens per piece’ (Creative Bloq Staff, 2020) . I mean over 100 hours just shows the patience and dedication many photorealists have. I think the time spent is worth it because the final product is unbelievable.

Many of these types of artists get criticized for spending countless hours on art that is essentially equal to photographs. But most don’t intend to spend time creating drawings which look like exact replicas of photographs. Kelvin Okafor (a photorealist portrait artist) explains why he can spend a lot of time on his drawings; ‘there’s an essence I find in each person I draw. The nature of my art is very meticulous so naturally I’m driven by the small things in life that seem unimportant to some but for me it is just as important as anything else.’ He also states that when you draw or paint from a photograph it will always be more physical than the original photo. The pencil is a different medium to a camera so ultimately, they can never be equal aesthetically.

I can understand where critics come from when they bash photorealism for having minimal imagination, because art is meant to be creation and photorealism can seem more mathematical than creative at times. But I believe as long as it has purpose it can’t be criticised. Chuck Close uses a grid method to build his portraits, his methodical process is hard to knock as it has intention, he uses it to remember the faces of people close to him. My main criticism of photorealism is the need to hide the nature and effect of a medium. I think that photorealism works best at a large scale because from far it looks like a photograph but up close you can still witness the artist’s approach. Ultimately, there is definitely purpose for photorealism, its popular for a reason. I believe it offers a balance to impulsive abstraction and provides audiences with deliberate mark making.

Coordinated Labor working in the broadcast communications area yesterday gave 14-day final proposal to telcom monster, Huawei Technologies Nigeria Limited, to address all the work related issues defying the specialists in the organization or face all out closure of its activity in the country.

The association, Private Telecommunications and Communications Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PTECSSAN), a partner of the Nigeria Labor Congress (NLC), at a media preparation yesterday in Lagos, cautioned that the proposed activity would be condemning as it would influence all significant broadcast communications specialist organizations in the country whose foundation Huawei upheld.

The General Secretary of the association, Okonu Abdullahi, said all the association’s endeavors in the previous three years to address all the work related issues defying the specialists in the organization including answering to the Ministry of Labor and Employment have been repelled by its administration. “Extreme of which is gross dismissal and forswearing of the specialists’ essential basic liberty to Freedom of Association as revered in Section 40 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria just as Section 12(4) of the Trade Unions Act LFN 2004 and ILO Conventions 87 and 98,” he said.

Okonu said the association has many its individuals working in the association, however they were hesitant to relate to the association as Huawei in the past have sacked a few of its individuals who set out to advocate the reason for the laborers in the foundation.
