I came on Tumblr in the middle of my Carmen Sandiego obsession and how the hell are none of you shipping el topo and le chevre like they're obviously very very gay for each other in like a super soft way-

okok sonadow headcanons.

shadow and sonic are extremely emotionally repressed because they both have a lot of trauma. in sonic's case he's repressed most lasting negative emotions because of what i like to call the protagonist "i do this bullshit like 8 times a week" trauma (and also being fucking tortured), in shadow's case he's repressed and hidden his vulnerable emotions (love, caring for others, loneliness) because of the trauma surrounding the murder of the one person he cared about the most. being "chill" and making light of everything is easier than admitting his hurt for sonic, and for shadow, it's safer to be angry than sad or caring because anger is defensive and those are vulnerable. this makes their relationship difficult to navigate, since they're both WAY not used to that sort of connection, and they tend to be real awkward around any genuine exploration of their feelings, so while their relationship sort of comes off as though they've got everything together given their circumstances, they're really just awkward teens with trauma in love.

sonic has a really hard time falling asleep. i dunno if this is just projecting and im super fucking traumatized because this happens to me almost nightly or what but basically like, if you ever get so just filled with anger that's just sort of bubbling under the surface over how you've been so fucking wronged when ur trying to sleep. that's what happens to sonic. and also adhd. he hates trying to sleep and will put it off. (but he also sleeps super late lmao)

this is part of the reason i hc sonic and shadow would sleep in the same bed. it's just better for both of them. but i still hc they would sleep in the same bed but have different blankets because otherwise they'll both try to steal the blanket from the other one.

sonic and shadow like to watch movies together, but it's hard for sonic to focus on movies so there's a limited few they can watch that hold his attention if they want to watch it together. sonic loves john wick, shadow is more for horror but has a taste for those kinds of action movies sonic likes if they're tense enough.

they're not particularly lovey-dovey or really that affectionate, but there are a few exceptions. sometimes they just lay on top of each other when the mental illness hits. hedgehogs will do this thing particularly when they're tired called splooting, which is laying flat with their back legs behind them and front legs in front of their head. domestic hedgehogs doing it around their owners is a sign they feel comfortable enough to sleep defenseless around them. what im proposing here is sonic does this 2 shadow. he just sploots out on top of shadow's chest when hes tired bc Boyf Comfy.

if they're battling, they will flirt with each other to get the upper hand by flustering each other. this works very well on shadow, who doesn't like to try to flirt unless he's sure it'll work. sonic on the other hand is constantly flirting with shadow to get a rise out of him.

sonic puts on a suave, confident and flirty persona, but in reality he's a disaster. if shadow even touches him when he's not expecting it, let alone does anything romantic, he loses all brain function and short circuits entirely. he is NOT used to being treated romantically. sure, amy does it, but that's one thing, shadow is another. especially because shadow knows a few ways to get to sonic and will use those against him if he's salty sonic for under his skin, or just wants to embarrass him.

definitely though the more confident romantically of them is sonic.

shadow on the other hand is extremely protective of sonic. not all the time, sonic is certainly capable of protecting himself and fighting, but he will get fiercely defensive of sonic if he thinks he's in danger. he is not afraid to hurt or even kill those who hurt his loved ones. especially sonic.

tangentially related headcanon, once, and only once, shadow has called sonic his beloved. probably not to sonic directly, maybe not even around sonic. most likely scenario, he said it to someone else. something about how if they ever so much as touched his beloved again, he'd have their head.

If i had to think of one particular person he'd say that to, probably infinite, but now we're well into the territory of headcanons that are just going to be greek to you. infinite is the villain of sonic forces, the game in which the english version states sonic was being tortured during the time he was m.i.a during the events of the early game.

also tangentially related, i hc that shadow has serious issues regulating attachments because of his trauma. can you tell /s

sonic calls shadow "babe" sometimes, less as a pet name and more as a means to try and fluster him, again. his pet name of choice is "faker." (/hj) but he does like calling shadow babe sometimes.

sonic has a lot of different forms, super sonic from the positive charge of the chaos emeralds, dark sonic from negative emotions (namely anger) and the negative charge of the chaos emeralds, the werehog from dark gaia's power, and super sonic in particular (basically sonic using the chaos emeralds to achieve godly powers) shadow has a huge crush on.

honestly sonic probably has really bad ptsd and seriously low self esteem he masks under his ego and attitude. shadow is capable of recognizing his deflective patterns in conversation, and scolds him for trying to cover up his issues bc he cares a lot abt sonic's wellbeing but has a hard time expressing it.

lavender is one of sonic's favorite scents, because that's what shadow smells like.
