Bonus Post: Oklahoma!

We always knew that Oklahoma would challenge our commitment to visiting all 48 contiguous states. True to its dazzling reputation, the part of Oklahoma we were going to be remotely close to doesn't contain any must-see destinations. Still, we went out of our way to visit Oklahoma's Red Slough Wildlife Management Area on the way to Texas. Our 1.5 hours in Oklahoma is a misfit among our blog posts (metaphor?) so we decided to give it its very own bonus post.

As we crossed the state border, the "Now Leaving Arkansas" sign was just above a sign reading "End Road Maintenance." This was in lieu of an Oklahoma welcome sign, but perhaps more appropriate. The roads went from smoothly paved to practically off-road as soon as we entered America's real final frontier.

Our phone's navigation took some naps as we made our way to Red Slough, which is really more of a Beige Slough. These wide expanses of prairie, reservoirs, and bottomland hardwoods (still looks like a swamp) are inhabited by a surprising cast of critters, most notably the American alligator. We didn't have the pleasure of meeting an Oklahomagator, but we hiked out to a watchtower to take in the...brownness of it all.

We admit that we cheated Oklahoma, but you have to give credit that we saw plenty of wind sweepin' down the plains. Sadly we are left with very little more to say about the experience, besides that it was "OK."
