oh my god……..i love Buffy the vampire slayer
#like wow every time I watch a new show and I’m like hm I like this#i remember Buffy and I’m immediately like ‘every other tv show is grotesque and a waste of time’#BtVS is a MASTERPIECE#like objectively a genuine masterpiece#and im actually surprised it isn’t more famous#like i know it’s really famous but it’s legitimately a groundbreaking piece of media#and in ever way that a tv show needs to be good…it is#make a checklist of every element a tv show needs to execute well to be a Good Show#and buffy checks every single one!!!!!#okay well. actually maybe not the ‘isn’t problematic and void of racism/homophobia/transphobia’ box#because like. most pieces of media can’t check that box#especially ones from the late 90s/early 2000s#and it is a very white show so actually maybe it doesn’t check every box. Not the diversity box or race conscious box#and being Joss Wh*don’s creation is definitely also a minus#but im sorry it is just genuinely one of the best quality tv shows ever created#in terms of cohesive story + rich characters + impeccable writing + beautiful wit and comedic timing + amazing cinematography and editing#even the campyness of the high school seasons have their place in the show as a work of art#the B-movie special effects and monster-of-the-weeks are so beautifully remeniscent of classic Hollywood horror (comedy)#the obviousness of the allegorical nature of the supernatural elements isn’t TOO on the nose#it’s just perfectly right on the line#the mythology and lore is near perfect in terms of coherency and narrative consistency#there aren’t really plotholes at least none that really impact the larger story#(like in PLL)#the supernatural lore isn’t over complicated and inconsistent and rapidly changing in order to move the plot forward (like vampire diaries)#the lines soul/soulless good/evil are blurry enough to force the audience to grapple w what it means to be a human being#what it means to be Good vs Do Good Things#what is morality and where does it come from (a soul? love?)#what drives the ability to truly love another (a soul? maybe not because Spike….)#but not too blurry that it doesn’t make sense forcing viewers to suspend our disbelief too far#vampire diaries failed all of these things
