about mori’s daughter, okou (okō). she was born in 1579 while he was fighting at the borders to the shinano province and was only 5 years old by the time of his passing. okou continued living with her mother who later married nakamura kazuuji. being the child of two warriors, she aspired to become one herself as well or at least marry one, though nagayoshi was vehemently against it.

she’s the kinda kid that’s caused an uproar by not falling into gender norms, who challenges boys to play-duels to prove herself. okou’s missing either parent’s temper, though she makes up for it by her obliviousness to morals. despite her cute outer, she was a troublemaker just like her parents who she greatly looked up to, the sort that gives you a smile so innocent you can’t be mad for long. besides trying to impress everyone with her self-taught skills, she likes to collect bugs, embroidered pouches and dead things she finds outside. since dad came home blood-drenched all the time, she internalized a lot of socially unacceptable and morbid things. though she was fascinated by death and ecstatic about it in a way that reminded whose kid she was, whenever she found a wounded animal she did all in her small powers to tend to it and return it back to health.

neither ikeda nor mori had an issue with their little taxidermist, so bringing home the skeleton of a japanese weasel or similar for her to marvel about was a completely ordinary father-daughter bonding moment for them. knowing that he’d likely not live a long life, he was dead-set on leaving her with nothing but good memories to remember him by. he misses her dearly and is conflicted about not having died in any way that she could say she was proud of.

on a historical side note (c), her name can be read as ‘scandalous conduct’ which caused a lot of confusion in his will whether he was referring to his daughter’s scandalous conduct or if her name was simply okou, written in an archaic manner that no one uses anymore. it’s also how you spell incense so (?). / picrew
