The Official Diagnosis

Last Friday was the appointment with my neurologist where we collected all the testing he has done over the last few months and he delivered his diagnosis. It was the ONE THING I begged God to give me any disease but the one that has been cast upon me for the remainder of my days. This time, God did answer my prayers.

RSD. CRPS. I think there might be a few other acronyms out there but I can sum it up for you pretty easily. It is the one disease that takes over the central nervous system. MY central nerves system. It is like it wakes up and throws a party on the ends of my nerves. Well, actually the party takes place on the ganglion of the nerve. So essentially (from what I understand. I have been reading for weeks and I still lack knowledge), all the ganglion on the ends of my nerves let the party get out of control and the house is burning down. And the result of that is crippling pain. Swelling in my ankles that make my legs very unattractive and edema in the lower leg that adds to the grossness that makes me pleased we are in an extended winter. (My hands do the same thing). I woke up one morning last week and one hand blew up like a balloon. My chest area has the biggest party happening currently. I believe that the surgery which started this fire is undoing itself as I can feel the muscle removing itself from my chest wall. This just convers a few of the problem areas. I don’t need to carry on as it seems it is all I do. Bitch and cry and get angry about a stupid disease that landed inside me. I am really angry. As a matter of fact, my anger is so intense, I can’t describe it in words.

BUT................ there is a small glimmer of light. A treatment out there that is improving the pain by 30-70%. I have been obsessively reasearching. Watching videos of the pioneers that are dedicating their careers to making RSD humans feel better. They are extremely smart Harvard level physicians that understand this disease in ways that seem impossible. And this treatment, the one I will chase down at all costs, consists of a week of infusions that deliver ketamine and IVIG into my body to make its way to the ganglion to bust up the party. It also involves a lot of PT and OT so I can regain my lost strength. Most physicians that do this treatment do the infusions for a week straight and then I would go back for “boosters” as needed. And the as needed seems to be like 6 months or even years down the road. Sounds like everything is going to be ok, right? Sounds like my quality of life might actually be saved and I can find myself again.

But hold up. TIME OUT. Because why would life ever be that simple? Why can’t my doctor just send me to an infusion center and off we go on the trip to bring the party back out of my body and into my real life? The answer? THE HEALTHCARE SYSTEM SUCKS AND IS BROKEN AND MAKE EVERYTHING SO DAMN DIFFICULT THAT I JUST WANT TO SCREAM UNTIL SOMEONE PUTS THAT MEDICINE INTO MY ARM.

The Cleveland Clinic does have the ability to do this treatment. So the day of the “official diagnosis”, I called and scheduled an appointment for May 22nd (first available). Over the weekend, I consulted with my family and we decided not to allow a month to go by while we wait for this appointment without getting more information from the CLE Clinic on their process to the promise land. Wait what? I just spent months getting testing. My insurance company and I have lots of bills to show for it. There is absolutely no question that I have RSD. Oh and there is this thing called “I want to go back to work before I am out of time and lose my job AND my benefits”. The lady on the phone didn’t give a hoot about any of those issues (and I swear I was being sugar sweet to her, I left litigator Kristi out of this call). Cross CLE clinic off the list.

SOOOOOOOOOO, I am now spending every second of my day trying to find a doctor that is specialized in CRPS and is willing to use the perfectly good testing I have received and put the damn infusion into my body.

I am on a mission. I will find someone. And if they are in NY or NJ or RI or even CA, I will take my cane and my backpack and will talk there if that is what it takes.
