Hexeosis:  Why I sell my gifs as Crypto Art

Hexeosis is one of the success stories of Tumblr’s golden age.  The psychedelic gifs created under the Hexeosis name became so popular that the person know as Hexeosis quit their day job and never looked back.  Now Hexeosis sells gifs as Crypto Art, something I have been mystified by.  Hexeosis was generous enough to answer my questions at length below.

Why did you decide to put your art on SuperRare and KnowOrigin?

I like SuperRare and KnownOrigin because they both feature clean interfaces and nice designs that I think complement the work being posted. And, they are some of the leaders in the cryptoart space which means they have traffic from many collectors and many artists. Both of the sites do a lot to promote the artists and the art works as well, which is a great feature.

Once a piece is sold, does that mean no one but the purchaser can see it?  Can it ever be posted online again?

This is one of the things that makes crypto art a unique way to buy and sell art. For the most part, the sites selling crypto art do not prevent others from seeing it once it's sold. It's actually more of the opposite, in that the sites will host the images for all to see whenever they want to. Also, posting on-line is a bit controversial, but most feel that posting on-line is a good way to promote the work and to get a larger audience. There's not much of a real world equivalent to how that aspect works. There's a popular saying in the crypto art world "everyone sees it, only one owns it" said by artist Hackatao. Some artists and collectors don't completely agree with this idea. Some artists argue that posting the same artwork on social media devalues the crypto art version. Some also would like it to be set up in a way that the collector could decide whether to keep the image private or share more widely with the world. I think this is one of the issues that will continue to be explored as the space grows.

What do the collectors do with the art?

There's a wide range of collector behavior after they purchase a piece of crypto art. Some collectors will create galleries in various decentralized 3d / VR worlds to display the art. This is one of the best things about the ETH NFT art now in my opinion. There's a huge degree of interoperability between many decentralized apps right now. I have a museum and a gallery set up inside of CryptoVoxels, which is a 3d / VR world accessible via web browser. The parcels are sold as tokens on the Ethereum network and the world allows users to embed gifs, video, etc.... A lot of crypto artists have been attracted to the space and are building a really interesting world. Here's two of my locations you can check out:

Some people are also buying crypto art as investments. There have been notable re-sales of digital crypto art that have traded for many times the original purchase price. Some collectors are interested in curating collections and some have set up museums for this purpose. There are also 2d web sites that work like portfolios / display pages where collectors can show off their collections. I've also seen people promoting and selling physical display panels for the home, that you can send crypto art that you own to display.

Since you have the original source files you are legally obligated to never create a copy again?  Even for portfolio purposes?

Artists agree to not reupload the same thing to multiple sites for sale, but it's ok to have in your portfolio or twitter feed. The terms of SuperRare state that the artist retains the copyright to the image, so the buyer doesn't even get the rights to re-purpose or publish the art without the permission of the artist. Some artists have decided to also include the copyright when selling the NFT.

Have you sold any pieces?  How is the price relative to real world commercial work?

Yes! I started in December of 2019 on SuperRare and have sold 34 gifs so far for an average price of 1.5 ETH  Here's a list of the artists on SuperRare

Can the artwork be resold?

Yes, this is a big factor actually. A number of collectors do look at this as an investment and do re-sell the works. Many of the platforms even have built-in royalty payments to the original creator. SuperRare and others currently include a 10% royalty payment to the original artist on re-sales. I've already had two works resold and have received a percentage of that sale. It's a pretty cool idea, especially since many artists have seen their early creations rise in value as more people enter the space and want to collect rare items.

Do know of other artists doing this?

I've followed both XCOPY (twitter @XCOPYART) and Yura Miron (twitter @YuraMironArt) for years on Tumblr and Twitter. I noticed that they both were posting more about crypto art and their involvement in it and that's what led me to investigate the space further. XCOPY is now one of the top selling artists, if not the very top at SuperRare. Since I've gotten involved, I've met probably close to 100 other artists now through the discussions groups, metaverse meetups, discord servers and twitter messages.

Do you get the sense that this is growing?

It is growing, there are more artists coming on board all the time and the developers of the dapps keep coming up with new ideas, features and integrations. Two years ago, the early artists were selling pieces for very low prices, under $100 and lately there have been digital crypto artworks that have sold for thousands of dollars.

How do you see the future of crypto art?

It seems like it's still in the really early stages. Most people don't really understand what cryptocurrency is all about and so crypto art is still largely unknown. But I do see it growing and gaining more mainstream acceptance all the time. I think in the future, the interfaces will be more user friendly and the backend will become a bit more transparent. I really like the idea of interoperable, ownable and tradable digital assets and people are coming up with new uses all the time.

Do you feel that the idea of 'owning' digital artwork is antithetical to the open idea of the internet?

I like this question.  When I started the hexeosis project back in 2013 on Tumblr, I was making and posting art "for free" as in, anyone could look at what I was making and enjoy it and download it, etc.... If I could live in a world where money somehow didn't matter, I would be completely ok with that format. I really enjoy making and sharing art with people. The social media platforms have monetized all of the free content that we all have been providing them. They sell ads, etc... but don't share with the creators. I can't pay rent with social media likes or buy food with retweets, so I see cryptoart as a good way for creators to have direct control of the monetization of their work. Since most creators and collectors are ok with the idea of sharing the work, it doesn't really interfere with the open internet concept.

Let me know if you have additional questions! This was fun to think about and try to explain from my point of view. A lot of people in the crypto art space have come from various backgrounds, a lot of them are coders and developers and tend to explain things in a very technical manner. I am approaching it as an artist and looking at the crypto art space as a way to earn money from my digital creations. My explanations above probably gloss over some of the technical aspects and I probably even summarize some things wrong, but it's an evolving space and I am learning all the time. Thanks!

 There were 10 different songs!! There were a lot of dance numbers and so I was sweating a lot. Recently, I’ve been feelings strongly about working more on my dance skills.

It’s all thanks to Boku no Shoudou. I want to change my atmosphere depending on the song. I want the atmosphere to change so much that you say, “What? Kubo-chan? Where?!!” (I don’t want you to lose sight of me though…) For this reason, I need to work hard to be the first person you spot no matter where I am.

I felt once again that ‘Live concerts are a lot fun’. Thank you so very much.

 Two days ago, I lost the remote control to my air conditioner. It was super cold. I haven’t seen it in 3 days… Honestly, where did it go, I said while looking for it. I found it a short while ago. The other day I went to buy some secondhand clothing〜However when I arrived at the store, I wanted to shop at it seems that they were closed. I guess there are days like that aren’t there.

 I bought some really cute western clothing. I���m thinking about wearing them at the handshake events. I’m excited. Thanks to the day that Miona-san invited me to go out I’ve become more active. Hehehe. Miona-san’s photobook is released today! Did everyone download it yet? I’ve played it many times already! I’ve challenged “Yubi Bouenkyou” I very happy that I cleared the song, thank you very much!! But it seems that I’m not good at it… I know the difficulties of rhythm games (´･_･`) but it’s still fun!!! Even though it’s the same song, once you get used to the map you can play while watching the live concert in the background and you can do it many times. It’s very fun so please make sure to check it out everyone!

 This suddenly came to my mind. Once January comes around it’ll be time for a fresh start to the year. Many things will begin again! Things like that will happen, but I don’t feel like I’ll be doing that in 2018. I wrote this before but it’s important to act when the opportunity arises, but I want to be someone that acts before it arrives. After all, I don’t want to lose to myself. I’ve recently finally come to accept this fact. I hate losing. I don’t think the fact that I hate losing is a bad thing. I first have to accept that part of myself.

2018. Heading toward next year, my dream, I’m carefully re-thinking my goals. The time to start is now.

 I’m clumsy. I’ll say it many times. I’m clumsy. Therefore, I can’t try and be like everyone else. I can’t be impatient when I see someone else do it, I can’t compare myself to someone else. I need to do my best in my own way. A clumsy way of doing my best. I’d be glad if you were to go easy on me.

 The other day I received a call from my mother. “Miyagi received it’s first snow fall.” It’s finally started to snow in the Tohoku region. Next year at this time, this is also going to be the expected weather. It’s not that obvious right now though. When I thought about this, right now each and every moment is being carved into my memory. I want to have a new day every day. I want to be able to realize this before I take it for granted. If I was asked how precious each day was to me I’d say it was like an asset. The reason that I live. The wide world. The long periods. Within all of that the fact that I’m able to meet everyone is that asset. Once again, please continue to look after me.

If you put it like that most people would probably choose the former. However, recently I’ve thought about something tremendous. To take care of yourself. Take care of yourself more. Be nice and take care of yourself. It’s completely different.

Originally, I couldn’t come to like myself. In anything. However, I’ve decided to take care of myself. When you look in the mirror you can hear the voice from you heart, when I do that the me on the other side is saying, “please help me” I feel like that’s what it’s pleading. Nevertheless, this isn’t a dark conversation. That’s why I can’t choose an answer. Rather, neither is the correct answer.

 I need to take care of myself. You need to take care of yourself. If you do that when you hear the words “are you ok” you’ll believe your own answer.

9 Things Harry Potter Wizards Unite Doesn't Really Tell You (But Definitely Should)

Harry Potter: Wizards Unite shares a lot of parallels with Niantic's other walkabout games - most notably the mega-popular Pokémon GO. You probably wouldn't have thought J.K. Rowling's Wizarding World would rival the natural collectability of Pokémon, but Niantic found a way. These similarities mean it's pretty straight forward for a Pokémon GO player to drop right in with little to no knowledge of the Harry Potter franchise. And for those who haven't played either, we have a handy Beginner's Guide over here.

Wizards Unite is a far chattier game than Pokémon GO was at the start - there's an actual story and everything! But in-game tutorials can only go so far. Just because it holds you hand for a good little while, it doesn't tell you absolutely everything you need to know. In this Harry Potter: Wizards Unite tips guide, we'll be detailing some very useful pointers we think all wizards and witches should know from the start.

Points of Interest Hold Specific Foundables

Harry Potter Wizards Unite is mostly centred around filling the Registry. It's where all your Foundables are logged as you return them through Traces. Foundables are catalogued through different types; but reliably finding specific types to help complete the registry can be difficult, as more areas will spawn randomized foundables that may be of no use to you. But there is a way to more reliably spawn the extra type of Foundable you need to build up a specific page of your Registry or increase your Rank.

On your walks, you may occasionally come across large, thin flags shooting up from the map. Tap one of these and you'll see an area around it light up. These are designated areas were Traces specific types will appear - the type dependant on the point of interest it marks. There's no sure-fire way to track these down, but areas like parks, libraries, and government buildings area usually prime candidates. My local sports club is one, but my small library is not. One town over, however, and its larger library is. And even the bus station. It pays to get out there.

Use Those Double EXP Potions 

Now this may have just been an oversight on my end, but it took me a good little while to find these in my bag. Harry Potter Wizards Unite places a large emphasis on Potions. But most of the time they're making your spells stronger or replenishing your Stamina in fights. You're always being told to hold onto these for difficult situations, so glossing over these potent bottles of levelling juice (Ok, Baruffio's Brain Elixer) is a real possibility. I only found these when I reach around Level 10, and boy would they have sped that whole process along.

Double EXP potions like these are best used in high-level fights or when you're collecting lots of Foundables. Able to double the EXP gained from the already substantial new Foundable bonus, using these when surrounded by Foundables at an early level will have dramatic results and can catapult a new player to level 10 – where things really start to heat up.

Portmanteaus Are Not Reliable EXP Sources 

Back in the early days of Pokémon GO, a great time to use a Lucky Egg (it's version of Baruffio's Brain Elixer) was when multiple 10 KM eggs (portmanteaus) were ready to hatch. This was because they gave a massive amount of EXP that could then be doubled for a quick boost. Unfortunately,  Portmanteaus don't work the same way. You can find decent amounts of EXP within the portals, but when you have no idea what you'll actually get, using a valuable EXP potion here is more often than not going to be a wasted effort. Save them for what really matters.

Foundables Can Run Away

Another element taken straight from Pokémon GO is the chance for Foundables to just disappear when you fail to snare them. If you've had a Foundable just fizzle out of existence after an unsuccessful trace, that's RNG showing it's ugly face. You'll usually be met with a notice telling you of what's happened, but sometimes you won't be dealt that pleasantry. Worse yet, the notice only explains how. Never why.

There's no solid evidence just yet, but the conditions perfectly match Pokémon GO. It's safe to say just like Niantic's other big collectathon game that each Foundable has a specific "flee rate" percentage. After each resist of a spell, the game rolls a figurative die to determine whether the confoundable will whisk away your valuable target. Rarer Foundables likely have higher flee chances, making the use of spell strengthening potions ever more valuable.

Open Your Daily Challenges To Make Them Count 

This is one that's ruined my day more than once. If you're the kind to get addicted to virtual check-lists, the Daily Assignments tab will be your best friend. The challenges within are the same each day, so it's not unnatural to head out of the house, fire the game up, and go about your business.

But then you get home after completing what it usually asks of you just to notice it hasn't counted a single one. Why? Because you have to actually open the Daily Challenge page each day before it begins to count your progress. It's an unforgivable design choice that Niantic really should work to fix. In fact, it might already be fixed by the time you ready this. Just double check before you waste your own time (and energy).

Registry Ranks Award Profession Scrolls

By the time Wizards Unite introduces Professions to you, you've probably already started to skip the walls of text you've been dealt over the last few hours. If you're then left wondering how to get more scrolls and books to level up your chosen Profession, know that isn't all about fighting your way through different levels of a Fortress. Scrolls and tomes can be acquired by ranking up pages in your registry, so it might be worth using our Area tip up above to farm for levels in your weaker Registry pages to fill in your Profession skill tree faster.

Gestures Speed Up Potions

This is something you'll only really learn by tapping the cauldron on the Potions screen. Gestures can be used to speed up potion crafts by around 15%, gaining you quicker access to your goods and an empty slot to brew again. But figuring them out is up to you.

Or at least it would be if it wasn't for every site under the sun printing them for your convenience. There's a multi-step gesture sequence for every potion in the game. We can't list them all here, but a quick Google search will get you far. Once you've used the unique sequence on 3 of the same potions, it will be saved in your game for quick reference. They won't have you flailing your phone around in public, either. They're all on-screen gestures like swipes and pinches. Though there is the occasional phone shake.

Weather Changes Everything 

This is one that might take a little more time to reliably comment on. Just like Pokémon GO, the weather in your area can have dramatic effects on your gameplay patterns. Rain, Sun, Wind, and even the amount of clouds in the sky will alter things like spawns. You'll mostly notice a change in the types of ingredients you find on your travels, but weather can also change the Foundables you might come across. They'll never outright deny certain things from spawning, but they can drastically boost or lower probabilities.

Data Assets To Save Data

Wizards Unite doesn't download fully from your app store of choice - whether it's iOS or Android. Either to speed up access or to save on space, it only downloads the absolute essential elements from the start and will download the rest as and when you need them. That means every time you tap a new Foundable out in the field, you'll be spending your precious data plan downloading the 3D model, animations, and sounds that make it up. Will so many graphical elements in Wizards Unite, that can really begin to chip away at your allowance.

The best way to combat this is to force a complete download while connected to your home WiFi. To do that, just tap into your Suitcase and hit the cog icon in the top left to reach the Settings screen. Scroll all the way to the bottom and you'll see a "Download All Assets" option. Wizards Unite is a big game. Over 3 GB at least. So make sure you can afford to lose that much storage space on your device before you start. And check back regularly. Updates add new content, and if you see a little red circle on that option, there's something new to download.

Honestly, who doesn’t have anxiety these days?

Even if you haven’t been officially diagnosed with an anxiety disorder (ahem, me), you probably still experience tinges of That Dreaded Feeling. That swelling of panic in your gut, that flush of hives across your chest, that looming paranoia you can’t quite place…

As a nation, our anxiety levels are rising. In 2018, the U.S. national anxiety score (yes, that’s a thing) was 51 out of 100 — a five-point jump since 2017 — according to the American Psychiatric Association. Among our top concerns? Health, safety and — you guessed it! — finances.

12 Simple Strategies to Help Calm Your Financial Anxieties

Sure, you might’ve broken the paycheck-to-paycheck cycle and no longer have to rely on ramen for dinner. But you still experience this sense of financial uneasiness, like you know you’re missing something.

Yes, some folks might call it irrational or unfounded. To you — and me — it’s totally real.

1. Use This Simple Trick Pay Your Bills on Time

The easiest way to calm this fear? Set your accounts to auto-pay. If you’re anxious about overdrafting or don’t trust auto-pay (same), then add the due dates to your phone’s calendar, or jot them in your agenda. This help you remember when bills are due and help you plan ahead with your budget.

This is such a simple move, and you’ll no longer have to jolt up at 2 a.m. because you knew you’d been forgetting something.

2. Realize Saving Money Isn’t Difficult if You’re Realistic and Proactive

The key word here: Realistic.

I tend to — scratch that, always — set unrealistic expectations for myself. Oh, sure, no problem. I can save 50% of my paycheck this month! A week in, I’ve totally blown the plan to pieces. First I feel stressed out, because I have no idea how I’m going to get back on track. Then I give up.

Don’t. Do. This.

“Make sure these goals are as specific and actionable as possible,” says Leslie Tayne, financial debt resolution attorney and founder and managing director of Tayne Law Group.

She offers an example: “Simply setting a goal to save more will be difficult to stick to,” she says. “However, if you make your goal to save $100 from each paycheck, that is a much clearer and actionable step.”

Ember.js: The Perfect Framework for Web Applications

Ember.js is an opinionated frontend JavaScript framework that has been getting a lot of interest lately. This article will introduce some key concepts of the framework while building a simple application with it, in order to show a basic example of what it is capable of producing.

Our example application is going to be a Dice Roller, including the ability to roll some dice and view a history of all dice rolls that have been performed to date. A fully working version of this application is available from Github

The Ember.js framework pulls together a lot of modern JavaScript concepts and technologies into one single bundle, including but not limited to:

The use of the Babel transpiler tool, to support ES2016 throughout.

Testing support at the Unit, Integration and Acceptance levels as standard, powered by Testem and QTest.

Asset building using Broccoli.js.

Support for live reloading, for shorter development cycle times.

Templating using the Handlebars markup syntax.

URL Routing first development to ensure that deep linking is fully supported throughout.

Full data layer built around JSON API, but pluggable for whatever API access you need.

In order to work with Ember.js, it is assumed that you have an up-to-date installation of Node.js and npm. If not then these can be downloaded and installed from the Node.js website.

It should also be mentioned that Ember is purely a frontend framework. It has a number of ways of interacting with the backend of your choice, but this backend is not in any way handled by Ember itself.

Introducing ember-cli

A lot of the power of Ember.js comes from its command line interface (CLI). This tool - known as ember-cli - powers much of the development lifecycle of an Ember.js application, starting from creating the application, through adding functionality into it all the way to running the test suites and starting the actual project in development mode.

Almost everything that you do whilst developing an Ember.js application will involve this tool at some level, so it is important to understand how best to use it. We will be making use of it throughout this article.

The first thing we need to do is ensure that the Ember.js CLI is correctly installed and up-to-date. This is done by installing from npm, as follows:

and we can check it was successfully installed by running the following command:

Creating Your First Ember.js App

This has caused an entire application to be created which is ready to run. It has even set up Git as source control to track your work.

Note: If you wish, you can disable the Git integration and you can prefer Yarn over npm. The help for the tool describes this and much more.

Now, let's see what it looks like. Starting the Ember application for development purposes is - once again - also done using ember-cli:

We are now ready to go. The application is running on http://localhost:4200, and looks like this:

It is also running a LiveReload service which automatically watches for changes to the filesystem. This means that you can have an incredibly fast turnaround time when tweaking your site design.

Let's try it?

The initial page already tells us what to do, so let's go and change the main page and see what happens. We're going to change the app/templates/application.hbs file to look like the following.

This is my new application.

Note: The tag is part of how Routing works in Ember. We will cover that later on.

The first thing to notice is the output from ember-cli, which should look as follows:

Now let's look at the browser. If you've got LiveReload installed and running you will not even have needed to refresh the browser for this to be picked up, otherwise, you will need to reload the current page.

Not very exciting, but this is with almost no effort on our part that we've achieved this.

In addition, we get a fully set up test suite ready to run. This is - unsurprisingly - run using the Ember tool as well, as follows:

Note that the output talks about PhantomJS. This is because there is full support for Integration tests that run in a browser, and by default, these run headless in the PhantomJS browser. There is full support for running them in other browsers if you wish, and when setting up continuous integration (CI) it is worth doing this to ensure that your application works correctly in all supported browsers.
