It really is Urobuchi breaking free of franchise obligations and cutting loose with his sense of play. All the show really is, is a soap opera about sassy bitches coveting magical swords... but it's given the space to breathe, to have characters be pretentiously (but not impenetrably) philosophical discussions, and to have temptestuous relationships that are arch but not quite silly, and always always always entertaining as shit. Even if the plot slows for an exposition dump or character discussion, the show is directed well enough to be interesting to look at, and there will always be at least one spectacular and explosive fight (with potential ludicrous blood and gore!) that will be a delight.

Truly it is my favorite thing ever done and I am so glad when more people discover it
