I think a lot of you people would like mastodon if you knew how it worked
#basically it's not just some website. it's like email where you make an account with one server and all the different servers communicate#as a side effect of this it ends up being like an amplified version of everything that makes tumblr different from other social media#it's not just mastodon either that's just one program. there's loads of others like pixelfed and peertube that serve different functions--#but operate on the same protocol#so you end up with this big decentralized network that nobody owns that lets you do cool shit like--#subscribe to a youtube channel from your twitter account#and if you don't like how your instance is being moderated you can just switch to an account on another one without losing anything#the network effect that keeps people on twitter is basically nonexistent here#don't make an account on the official instances though. they're way too big to have any kind of moderation and--#mastodon in particular is trying to make theirs more twitter-y for some reason#I'm tempted to do a proper write up in a reblog but i could also just send you to--#wordsmith dot social/elilla/a-futuristic-mastodon-introduction-for-2021#they explain it really well imo#also if i managed to sell anyone on this you can follow me there at @will@social dot isopod dot cool. i run my own instance it's sick#ok edit here's the solution to admins being able to read your dms: use something else to directly message people
