Blasphemous 2 it's an ok game... not even close to be as good as the first one. (long ass review)
I just finished Blasphemous 2 and I can say that it was a let down. I love, love, LOVE the first game. The art style, music (specially the music), the atmosphere, everything blew my mind the first time I played it and it still does. But in this sequel, everything felt lacking. Something was missing. Felt like a downgrade compared to the first entry. Also, I found an insane amount of bugs and glitches. Anyway, here are the list of things that made this game so 'meh':
1- Pixel Art. While the core of the game continues to use beautiful Pixel Art, the cutscenes now use 2D Animation, and while they look good, they feel out of place with the rest of the game. Yes, they used this style with the last free DLC's trailer, but they kept using Pixel art for the game's cutscenes of the DLC. Ok, I get it, Pixel Art is not easy. Ron Gilbert said it. But still, feels like it lost something really important.
Regarding the enemies, bosses and NPC models: For enemies, they reused some of the old models, a couple with some tweaks but others pretty much the same. Most of the new enemies are not visually impactful like the first one, and the biggest sin is that this applies to the bosses and NPCs. I can count with one hand those who I found interesting.
Sceneries; They were good... but not THAT good. I can recall all the levels in the first game because they were incredible. Gameplay and visual-wise. Here tho, only a bunch were interesting, while most of them barely left any impression in me. 2- Music. Carlos Viola's work is supreme. I can listen the whole OST of the first game any day. In this one tho… like the sceneries, some were good while others I barely noticed they were there. Also, feels like this one has fewer songs than the first game. 3- Gameplay. It is good that now we have couple more weapons and the option to create builds for different playstyles, but at the end of the day, you can turn OP pretty earlier in the game and end up using the same items/sets till the end of the game.
Before I bought the game, I read articles complaining that the game was too easy compared to the first and, boy oh boy, they weren't exaggerating. First thing I noticed is that you can't die by falling off cliff or on traps. You just lose some health and respawn were you fell. But the biggest issue is that all the enemies are way too easy, even the bosses don't present any challenge. The only boss that I actually lost the battle was the one before the ending.
Exploration and secret areas are more accessible and easier to find. Again, losing any challenge and making this a dull experience. Due that, you can get the ability to travel from checkpoint to checkpoint way earlier in the game, which makes the travelling between areas and revisiting old paths, unnecessary unless it's obvious there is a secret there. Ok, it's optional, but it is hard to resist the temptation and not use this ability.
4- Plot. Continues were the DLC left off, but feels like they dumb it down. IDK, it's like everything is too straightforward. Even the NPCs' side quest are lack-lusting. So yeah. I expected much much more from this game and it sadness me that is not even close to the original. As it own, it is not bad. But since this is a sequel, it is impossible not to find all it's faults.

The Champion’s Identities 10,000 years back
I was tagged in this post by @no-themes-just-memes for a theory about the original Divine Beast pilots 10,000 years back. This was too big for a reblog so here is this...
This tapestry, the one that was passed down to Impa, over what I can assume is a lot of generations, is pretty much our only information regarding the original Champions. It’s well guarded, behind Impa, which is near where their “treasured heirloom” was kept so it’s definitely a valuable heirloom.
[Full theory/analysis below the cut]
Now the fact that it’s in Impa’s possession and clearly in the Sheikah style is obvious to the fact that it was Sheikah-made, but just to reiterate that point, you can clearly see the Sheikah text, swirl designs, eye symbol, and obsession with constellations that other Sheikah stuff (like shrines) have. Impa’s version is much more weathered, which in comparison to the much brighter and refined picture I have at the top, obviously means that this piece of art is old. This was definitively made by the Sheikah and not something that was from the Hyrulean Family as other people may think
Why is this important? Well firstly, and a bit off topic, but I think this confirms that the sealing of Ganondorf in botw 2 was done by the Sheikah as the wall art in the trailer is of Sheikah style and not the Zonai (although that’s on the pretense that this art of ganondorf is related to his sealing, and not just art depicting the events of something else entirely, which could also be likely to be fair)
Anyhow, the fact that this was done by the Sheikah, means that we can definitively say that the art here is not only accurate, but we can understand that the artist had the basic knowledge on what the different races across Hyrule were when making this. Basically, I’m saying that this isn’t a case of “Oh this was a legend passed down through time and this art was made by someone 100 years ago so the description of the Champions is not accurate.” No. This was by the ancient Sheikah, who had first hand, or at least very close hand, knowledge on the events and more specifically what the Champions looked like.
[And I can further prove this because the tapestry in the trailer is obviously woven, and not inked into, unlike the other more “modern” art across Hyrule that you see in the game. It’s on an almost papyrus like “paper” and not the more modern book binding paper that is present across Hyrule, the only exception being the Rito, but again, this is definitely Sheikah design]
If we understand that the depictions of the Champions are accurate, and not the result of misinterpretation through myths passed down to later artist, we can actually use the art of the Champions as fact to identify them.
I’ll start off with this, none of the Champions were Rito, Goron, Hylian, or Sheikah.
Rito and Goron are easy to disprove, the shape of the Champions are vastly different from the larger, circular Gorons, and there are no wings, beaks, or talons present on any of them, so Rito is a no.
You could argue that Medoh’s pilot has a beak, but 1) There’s still no wings or talons, tail, or even feathers. 2) It’s more likely a helmet, such as the Divine Beast Vah Medoh Helm which is canonically worn by the pilot/controller of a Divine Beast. We will come back to that point.
None of the pilots are Hylians or Sheikah, because the tapestry includes depictions of those very races in the same piece. The Hylians are depicted very human like, and the Sheikah are all with their signature masks with their symbol on it. Both, vastly different than the styles of the pilots.
(And also the Sheikah race devoted themselves to assisting the Hyrulean family with their technology and knowledge and not with direct combat making it unlikely they were pilots)
[btw there’s a theory that the corpse in botw 2 is actually the hero because they could both be Gerudo/ganondorf, cause the hero in this tapestry was Gerudo cause of the skin tone and hair or something... but I’m 99% sure that’s wrong because 1) the curse of demise wouldn’t allow Ganon to be the good guy and 2) the hero clearly has pointed ears, something not developed by the Gerudo (who had rounded ears) for many many many generations]
[Fun fact! This last image showing the ancient Sheikah being cast out displays them escaping to the Forgotten Temple (with the large goddess statue) and some of them also splitting off to become the Yiga Clan]
The only possible known races left are the Gerudo and Zora, but I’m very hesitant to even say that for a few reasons I’ll get into later.
The reason they’re not crossed off completely is because they have distinct arms and legs which Zora and Gerudo have, shocker I know. In addition, it could be argued that the red hair that some of the pilots have indicate their Gerudo race. Also, the pilot for Divine Beast Vah Ruta has a skirt/petitcoat like fins around their waist which could be argued to indicate a Zora. However, this obviously won’t explain the other pilots, but we’ll get to that soon.
[I’m not gonna re-screenshot the other pilot just scroll up and look at how their hair color is red ok]
Now, other than those obscure observations, this leaves me with my two theories. The simplest one, is that the pilots were actually Hylians, or Zora, or some other race, but they’re depictions here have them in armour, so it is impossible to tell. This lines up with the amibo descriptions of the Divine Beast Helms, which were worn by those who controlled the beasts, giving reason to the pilot’s unusual head shape. Not far-fetched to assume that they’re might have been a fully fledged Sheikah pilot armour made at some point.
[could be argued that the this helm explains the “tusk” or “trunk” like blue shape on the Ruta pilot’s face]
In addition, notice how the pilots are all wearing the same colors as their Divine Beasts. The Ruta pilot with the same shade of blue, the Rudania with the orange, Medoh with the green, and the Naboris pilot with the red (and yes its a different color than the Ruta one, I checked its a darker shade). This could explain away the coat-like shapes on the Ruta pilot, and and previously mentioned beak shape on the Medoh pilot. No race (other than the Zora, but again, they’re unlikely) have these colors naturally, so we can only assume it is armour that makes their weird body shapes.
[Again, I’m not gonna re-screenshot them just scroll up or take my word for it :p]
So theory one is just that, their races are ambiguous/unknown because of the ancient Sheikah armour they wore, perhaps to protect their identities? Or, perhaps because Nintendo was lazy and didn’t think it was that important, which is fair, it really doesn’t impact the story that much.
What it does impact is my ability to theorize and assign meaning to things that they didn’t intend to, in the hope that I’m might be right, which brings us to theory 2.
I say that the pilots are not Gorons, Rito, Hylians, Sheikah, Zora or Gerudo. Now you might be thinking “That’s literally every race in Hyrule how is that possible?” and to that I saw no, no it’s not.
If we skedaddle back to my brief mention of the Zonai in that one paragraph a good 5 minutes ago (for your average reading speed idk) we can remember the Zonai people, responsible for the ruins across the Faron, Thyplho, Upper Eldin, and all three of the mazes in the corners of Hyrule. Their culture and ruins are vastly different than the Sheikah and Hylian, but they’re assumed to have human-like characteristic given their relation to the barbarian armour set, as I assume that the tribe from the Faron region is at the very least connected with the Zonai
This armour, by the way, is only found when completing Sheikah shrines, meaning the Sheikah must have made contact with the Zonai at least 10,000 years ago. Much easier to be in touch with someone if they’re...I don’t know, recruiting their people to pilot a giant mech of yours, wouldn’t you say?
Secondly as to why I think the pilots are all Zonai, is this line from Impa
These pilots were from “across the land.” Of course, you might initially interpret that line to prove that the pilots must have been of different races and background (ergo, Theory 1) but then how could you explain the similarities all four of the pilots have to each other.
All the pilots have darker skin (something that might be common if your people originated from a lush jungle, such as the Faron?) they all have distinct arms and legs, they all have hair, and are all of similar proportion, which is different than that of the Sheikah and Hylian.
I’m saying that all the pilots were off the same race, and what other race is present “across the land” other than Hylians? The Zonai, present in all four corners of Hyrule as proven by their ruins.
The Champions of 10,000 years back were Zonai, wearing special Sheikah made armour and helms, and helped the Hylian princess and the hero defeat and seal Calamity Ganon. While the Sheikah were later pushed out, no such violence or discrimination was recorded against these Champions because they were not Sheikah. Their race and names faded with time because just like their Zonai people, they and their tribe disappeared mysteriously never to be seen again. This is why their identities and race were left unknown, because their people were not remembered.
But that’s just a theory...a GAME THEORY. Thanks for watc— uh reading? Thanks for reading :P

Kasumi/Hamuko Parallel post
I mean I’m not saying Kasumi is Hamuko reincarnated in Minato’s timeline, but I feel like it’s a very good possibility (considering MT’s lore and as well as possibly Persona’s). I mean again, it’d be REALLY SEXY if I was proven wrong with Adult!Hamuko showing up in P5S! REALLY SEXY ATLUS! ;w; (just watch and see me be right with both P5R and P5S, let’s hope not cause that’s giving me a headache just thinking about it haha ;w;). Anyway, this is mostly going to be a parallel post between Kasumi and Hamuko, both really freaking shallow to “hey those are some key character traits!” kinda stuff. I’ll organize it from newest release/info to oldest. So starting with PQ2 (prior to that I will open to why it’s perfect timing out of universe) and then P3P (during which I’ll talk about why the timing in universe is perfect too).
There will be spoilers of P5R BUT ONLY ones from a stream, which showed the first like 10 min of the game (the spoiler is that it confirms when a specific scene happens in game). There will be PQ2 spoilers tho so like....yeah 8U
(lowkey been trying to finish this since Cinderella’s announcement but better late than never and I wanted to at least get most of it done before P5S’ possible trailer tonight 8U)
Under the cut cause length and pics~!
So before with start with PQ2, I should say why this is perfect timing out of universe. PQ2 has just released, Hamuko is in the public’s head. Not only that but she was as important to the game as the main-main case (aka P5). Now would be the perfect time to release a new character who looks the same and has the same importance. I mean this wouldn’t be the first time they did it, they first did it with Arena-PQ1-Ultimax, with PQ1 having secret answers to Arena, and Ultimax later reaffirming these answers (I’ll keep it vague for those who have yet to play the, as I like to call it, “The Yasogami Labyrinth Trilogy.”) It could be that PQ2 was actually our Arena in a possible trilogy (with P5R being the PQ1 and P5S being our Ultimax, that’s just a theory tho, it could just be that this is a duology too 8U). But yeah this is why it feels like perfect timing if they wanted to make this twist. Now onto PQ2
PQ2 (might add more later):
Were to start is the real question, I’m kinda just going to list of things with pictures showing them. I’ll try to keep everything numbered to make it easier.
1) Both apparently first appear in the first arc which stars Kamoshida (Kasumi is stated to not introduce herself during that time, but we can still find her). Kasumi is around for Kamoshida, Hamuko is around with Kamoshidaaaaaman.
a) Coincidentally enough, there is a little girl that appears in Kamoshidaaaaman’s trailer that looks A LOT like Kasumi. (which I dunno might also symbolize Hamuko, speculation on my end but I felt the female dinosaur kind of symbolized Yosukesaurus that we actually see in the movie so maybe it’s a parallel maybe not but I wanted to throw it out there), also if Kasumi’s life is anything like Cinderella (and trailer girl’s dad is dead from that impact), that means Hamu/Kasumi/Trailer girl both have their dads possibly not being around anymore:
2) Both technically have a magical girl connection, Kasumi mostly from her transformation and what the devs said....but Hamuko said something really interesting concerning the PT and Magical Girls:
3) (P5R first 10 min stream spoiler) Both are introduced into these two games via showing off how great fighters they are (even tho that’s not Kasumi’s chronological introduction to the audience because of the cold open, but it’s the first time we see her and it’s our first impression of her).
4) I don’t care if I’ll repeat this below in the P3P thing, but yet again but PQ2 hinted at Hamuko’s big appitite again:
5) Hamuko’s Ult Persona, both in P3P (tho it’s not shown in the credits) and in PQ2 is Messiah. Considering she’s a savior, and Kasumi’s relationship with magical girls (who usually are the “saviors”).....shallow I know but there. 8U
6) A big one, PQ2 actually hints at reincarnation, it’s just a throwaway line but....it’s not the first time Persona’s had a throwaway line and then it ends up coming true (sometimes it’s happenstance and sometimes it’s on purpose). (I should also note, reincarnation is a big part of MT, it’s even in the title, so it’s def not something that’s off the table). And the reason I’m including this is because, it kinda hints that even if Hamuko is reincarnated Kasumi, they’d kinda still have their own identity and be a different person.
7) Lastly (for now probably), Hamuko and Kasumi both end up “joining”/working with the PT at some point. I mean so does the rest of P3/4, but they really try to make Hamuko feel included, and she feels extra gung-ho about the whole thief thing. It’s a shallow/small one but I should include it anyway.
(the reason I might add more later is because I’m re-going through PQ2 to see if I pick up anything else, anyway onto P3P~!)
P3P:
Before listing their similarities, I want to explain what I meant by the timing being perfect for in-universe. The reason being, if Hamuko died around 1999, she’d probably be reincarnated into someone who was born around 2000, and people roughly in 2000 (minus the first 4 months) are....guess what? 1st years during P5 (Futaba and Yusuke have late birthdays fun fact). And considering Kasumi is a first year~! Yeah it’s perfect timing if they wanted to pull a reincarnation card.
1) They.....they have the same face..... I’M NOT JOKING THEY HAVE THE SAME FACE! It’s not the hair style it’s the face man! ;w; Rough same eye shape and face shape (sadly their portraits usually have their faces not being the same portfolio but this is the closest we have):
2) The both have red eyes (which also look brown in some lighting). (I know some people want to say Hamuko has auburn hair for some gd reason even tho it’s pretty brown in a lot of artwork, but since that’s close to red and Kasumi has red hair like bonus points it seems if auburn is also a correct answer XP)
3) Both of their portraits like to have their eyes looking to the left (their perspective)/right (our perspective) area (the angle of their face differs tho):
4) Both have been said to be big eaters. Like Atlus is freaking advertising this about Kasumi like crazy man, but Hamuko has food and her big appetite tied to a loooooot of different events with P3P. Like Hamu being a hungry girl and loving her food is a very iconic trait to her (ironically it’s not really done to death in PQ2 unlike Chie’s meat or Aki’s protein klfjsadl;fja).
5) Both have red as a main theme (like red eyes, red ribbon, red shoes/headphones 8U). It’s shallow but important!
6) Shallow but interesting thing I notice, there’s a lot of key design similarities between Fem!Orpheus and Kasumi’s PT outfit and Cinderella. The biggest being the vine embroidery and the same heart design. There’s also the fact Fem!Orpheus Picaro also has red hair and a black headpiece similar to Kasumi who has red hair (all the time) but a black ribbon, also both have a similar flower connected to them (red gloves and black fingers, former for Kasumi and the latter for Cindy, but I don’t think it’s as important as the heart/vine/flower similarity). 8U Other than that I’ll just show it in the picture below:
7) This one is part of a popular theory with Kasumi, and will possibly be debunked after P5R’s release but I do want to throw it out there. If the theory that Kasumi gets hit by a car in the rain (possibly during the fireworks festival), well..... That means they both have ties to car accidents. Just described what might be Kasumi’s. Hamuko survived one 10 years prior to P3, and there’s two that happen in two separate events (she saves Yukari from a crazy driver almost hitting them), and I iirc Theo saves Hamu from a crazy driver).
8) They have similar designed shoes (tho the promo art of Kasumi her shoes are different from the teaser so I dunno if it still counts) But it’s worth mentioning since Atlus went out of their way to keep Yusuke’s shoes as a reference to the past Persona game school he was supposed to be a part of before they made Kosei (god I’m so sorry for that word salad, no I won’t fix it at least not now)...btw Yusuke’s are stated to be in reference to P3 it’s stated in the art book:
9) Kasumi’s maid outfit is much closer to P3′s(and P4) than it is to P5′s (aka the traditional black and white as opposed to P5′s red and white), it’s just odd that it’s not also red 8U:
10) Uhhhh this (I don’t care we’re look for the smallest details! >:D DX ;w; also I’m ok really I’m ok 8U ;w; orz):
11) Last thing, but interestingly enough they both are known to jump really high. It’s not stated as a big thing for Hamuko, you just see it in her critical and that’s pretty much it. But it is a big defining moment for Kasumi (remember she jumps high to get a kid’s balloon). They also both like to twist and twirl in the air (tho Hamu is just designated to her critical). Shallow I know but I want to throw it out there. 8U:
Seriously look at that air time!
I might add more to this section, because I feel like I’m forgetting something but flksdajf;akf I want to get this out. Before I end it I do want to add a few not completely related Hamu parallels (but I can still loop back around cause my mental gymnastics are top notch! Probably even better than Kasumi’s! 8U). First is Minato parallels, which via PQ2 we find out that he and Hamu are “basically the same person.” The similarities is that he and Kasumi both have the same type of sword, and both of their Personas have the same skin (I think Male!Orpheus’ face is the only “real part” and thus both have the same kind of skin), and OT and Cindy technically both have blue eyes. 8U Small but I wanted to mention those 3 things. The other is Mitsuru, fun fact between Hamu/Minty/Mitsuru/Kasumi they all seem to be honor students (or can be, Hamu/Minty it’s up to the player). But I now a lot of people think Kasumi’s red hair and it also being wavy remind them of Mitsuru more, almost like a sister? Kinda like:
RIP to Hamuko, the cockblock sister zone destroyed us all that day. We stand with you girl. 😔✊✊
So yeah I dunno how else to end it. They just have a lot of similarities ok? And some of them are very distinct design features. Of course, again, it’d be really sexy of you to prove me wrong with Adult!Hamuko in P5S Atlus. ;) Be really sexy of you to stop ignoring Hammy and P1/2 characters~! Oh it’d be such a shame if I was proven wrong and those two things happened instead. Oh whatever shall I do~! 8U

anonymous asked: How would you feel about an Avatar AU? I’d love to see what element, or if a character is a non-bender, you feel would match your favourite characters in HQ!
oh-HO. i am unsure if you know that Avatar is one of my all-time favorite shows so when i saw this ask i was pumped!!! without further ado: i finally had some inspiration. i took this a bit farther than just my fav characters (i did as many as i could think of) and although i say in my rules i don’t do hc’s i felt this ask was best answered in that format so i did my best! i hope you enjoy 😁 im nervous as hell about headcanons 😬 some i have reasons for (serious or funny) and others i just...have a feeling
special shoutout to my discord fam that i love so dearly and especially to @animelake13 and @justoverseas for helping me out 💕💕
Karasuno:
Daichi:
Alright with those thighs and that dependability?? Earthbender through and through
He is a rock solid, all-around player that holds Karasuno all together
he is their BASE, stable as fuck
he didn’t get those thighs from nothing he got them kicking around some boulders
didnt get those arms from nothing either, punching rocks out of mountainsides
Suga:
Waterbender for sure
Hello? Mr. Refreshing
Very calm and level-headed, but like Katara: DO NOT. FUCK WITH HIM.
He’ll fuck you up
again like Katara, mom friend, supporting the whole team, caring a lot about them and getting ready to fight and ready to jump in and help at a moments notice
Asahi: (Thanks Louie!)
ok so this boy was hard to decide bc, he’s a nervous bean but also the motherfuckin ace so he ain’t playin around
so i decided on earthbender because, he’s a big boi; a powerful and all-around player that has the respect of his teammates
and although he’s nervous, so maybe he doesn’t use earthbending to the extent of other benders but when he needs to, he will
and when he does it has impact and he is a pretty strong earthbender to boot
he can move fucking mountains when he wants to
member of the white lotus bc he only uses his immense power when he absolutely has to
noya: “asahi!! show us your bending”
asahi: “oh im not much of a bender”
MOVES A CONTINENT
Noya:
While my first instinct was firebender
the more i thought about it the more airbender made sense
air is the element of freedom and Noya is the definition of wild and free
not only that but his position too! airbending is almost purely defensive
sounds like our guardian diety to me
also can u imagine
Noya and Hinata racing like maniacs on air scooters
Daichi throwing up barriers all over the place to stop them but they just nyoom around them like obstacles
airbending is all about circles too and roooooolllliiiinnnng (hehe) thunder!!!
Tanaka:
alrighty well here is Karasuno’s firebender
Firebending is known for its intense and aggressive attacking style and literally
Tanaka yells like a maniac anytime he goes in for a spike
and firebenders can be hotheaded (dont have to be, Iroh for example) BUT say anything about Kiyoko, Karasuno or really anything and he’s ready to throw down
it might be all talk but he still gets fucking triggered
he fires up two flames in his palms and makes that face “ehhh what did you say about our lovely Kiyoko-san?!?”
Enno:
airbender
he has such patience and probably mediates or something
or else he’d go crazy from Tanaka and Noya doing stupid airbender/firebender shit and burning down the entire town
deals it out when he needs to, sometimes blowing Tanaka and Noya to opposite sides of the room and pinning them there until they calm the fuck down
anytime Tanaka gets too heated, Enno just shows up and blows out his fire
Hinata:
ok so i kinda spoiled earlier
but airbender
i know airbending is defensive and Hinata sucks at that aspect, but his personality man, airbender all the way
again imagine him and Noya zooming on air scooters around
they would be a MENANCE
but also in the same sense, airbending is all about finding a way around the “normal” way of fighting (they refuse to harm anything is what i mean)
Hinata had to find his own way of fighting in volleyball and yeah…airbender
possibly bc he’s a bit of an airhead too
Kageyama:
WATERBENDER BUT WITH BLOODBENDING BACKGROUND
ok hear me out
he used to want to control people and make them do what he wants, otherwise get rid of them bc they’re useless and who needs ‘em
but then he meets this stupid, bounce off the walls, airbender who he doesn’t need to control bc this kid already does what he couldnt find in anyone else
and he slowly learns to stop using bloodbending, sometimes slips and lapses, but for the most part has left that part of him behind
also water is the element of change and Kageyama certainly goes through a major change in character throughout Haikyuu
everytime Hina and him fight, they make a snowstorm that nobody can stop and it pisses Tsukki off bc he can’t do anything about it
Tsukki: (props to Lake for this one)
tsukki why are you an enigma
nonbender and is a sword master
with his ability to analyze and control, he would heckin destroy
sword fights are a lot about watching your opponent and being able to make a quick decision to block or counter attack
he can definitely make decisions at the drop of a hat and his strategies work and work well
Yamaguchi:
THIS BOY
IS A WATERBENDER BUT SPECIALIZES IN HEALING
when Karasuno needs him most!!! he’s there!! ready to help and get his team back on his feet, in this sense by healing them
and also like Suga, mirroring Katara, don’t fuck with him. especially when it comes to Tsukki
AGAIN like Katara/Suga, mom friend, there to support all the time and bust in and help when needed
More teams under the cut!
Aoba Johsai:
Oikawa:
so there’s a bit of a trend here i see
but Oikawa would also be a waterbender, i guess it’s a setter thing
water is the element of change and Oikawa adjusts his setting style and approach for each of his team members to bring out the best of them
waterbenders let their defense become their offense turning their opponents own forces against them which i think fits Oikawa to a T
can make ice spikes he can throw long distances with scary accurate precision
like, one can just zip past your ear, and you dont see him anywhere where tf is he?!
Iwaizumi:
i couldn’t decide between firebender and earthbender
so i went with the lovely mix, lavabender
just like Toph, Iwa shows his affection through some sort of violence, but thats just cause he cares a lot
oikawa has mastered the art of distinguishing flaming hunks of smoldering rock thrown at his face
also stubborn unmoving like a rock
and when he gets heated, he is fired up
and finally, arms. where did he get ‘em? throwing boulders around.
Shiratorizawa:
Ushijima:
metalbender, bc he’s definitely an earth bender but there’s something special about him
he’s a little dense (ok maybe not a little)
Earthbenders are generally muscular, tough and direct AND HELLO. thats Ushijima in a nutshell
Tendou:
our guess monster is definitely a non-bender
like ty lee specializes in chi-blocking
he can disrupt someones chi pretty easily making them completely helpless
sometimes he does it to be funny
like make Ushi’s right arm useless for a day
and Ushi is like “Tendou. I don’t use that arm anyways.”
“i knoooooooow Wakatoshi thats the point!”
which for some reason Tendou thinks is hilarious cause now he really cant use it
Semi:
firebender
mainly bc of his hotheaded and competitive behavior
his desire to show his abilities in his words is “uncontainable” and that kind of made me think of Azula
wants to show off and be the best
Shirabu:
so although Shirabu is also extremely hot-headed, he hits me as a waterbender too
maybe just because every single setter so far has been a waterbender but its just my gut feeling 🤷
Nekoma:
Kuroo:
firebender but can lightning bend
dont ask me why it just seems right
he has the concentration and flow it takes to lightning bend, i mean he has that whole speech he gives to his team before every game
“We're like the blood in our veins. We must flow without stopping. Keep the oxygen moving and your mind working.”
and while this may lead to possibly thinking he could be a waterbender, he uses his knack for fluid motion and deceptive strength for a different purpose
not only can he lightning bend, he can redirect lightning which takes an immense amount of skill and is drawn from waterbending techniques
maybe its also the hair cause it looks like he got hit by lightning
Kenma:
ill be honest, i dont think Kenma would be a bender
what he would be ilike is Sokka, super smart, the strategizer, the man with the plan
who people look to for the next step, the brain of the operation
and i dont think he’d necessarily have a speciality besides overwhelming ability to observe and make decisions
so basically…he’d be the same LOL
Yaku:
earthbender
being small (dont kick me Yaku) means nothing (uhh have you seen Toph?)
super dependable and not gunna take anyone’s shit
Yamamoto:
Tanaka’s counterpart
his homeboy
his fellow firebender
both ready to throwdown at a moments notice
Fukurodani: (wow i suck i dont know anyone well enough but these two)
Bokuto:
did someone say airbender??
i just keep imagining he was the one to teach Hinata the air scooter and they fuckin zoom around while Bokuto is hollering at the top of his lungs
his hair already looks winblown, like he just stepped off his glider and doesn’t bother to fix it
also im cackling bc airbenders prefer evasive manuevers and…i keep thinking about that time he ran away from a block and Akaashi called him out for it
Akaashi: (ily Lake for helping)
so apparently setters are waterbenders
bc this boy is definitely one
he has nice fingers (weird i know) but i can see him just making these beautiful hand motions to bend water and hnngg yes
ok but in a more real way, waterbenders have strong fluid motion and understand those around them, they believe in very strong connections between individuals
so even when Bo is out of the game, Fukurodani doesn’t fall apart because they have strong connections and can survive without him

Ask Sam Mailbag: 02.22.19
On Zion. Where's he fit at 6'7" without a jump shot? I know he can drive the ball & jump like a guard, but at 285, doing that incessantly will destroy his knees. Under the hoop, he'll have Wendell's problems multiplied. No matter how high he jumps, a 6'7" guy cannot have the reach of a 7-footer. Barkley is the closest comparison, but he lost a bunch of weight... and he could shoot.
If the Bulls get the #1 pick, I'm leaning toward Ja Morant. On the Bulls, Zion would probably end up on the bench, whereas Ja would be likely to start and push Dunn to the bench. Barrett & Reddish s/b good players too, but probably not significantly better than Otto Porter. Who do you like if the Bulls don't pick in the top 3 or 4? If Zion, Morant, Barrett & Reddish are all gone, who's left who can help the Bulls?
Though the frenzy for top lottery picks is not abating, and probably just getting worse. So... First, I'd drop teams 11-14 from the lottery altogether. Those are the 4 teams who almost made the playoffs. Even though their odds are short, we constantly hear about them rather being in the lottery than losing in the 1st round. Let's start by putting an end to that. Then I'd flatten the odds among the bottom 10 teams, maybe even make them dead even, to discourage tanking into the bottom 3. That might eliminate nonsense like the Knicks sitting Enes Kanter while the fans are screaming for him.

Sam: And, in case anyone wonders, I received this before the latest game of the century Wednesday that went on for about 34 seconds before Williamson got hurt. While the discussion since has been all about whether he should retire (from college ball) and Mars Blackmon's exclamation about the shoes, I think the injury issue is a legitimate question for other reasons. I don't expect the way Zion comes across personally as someone who would run away from Duke for fear of injury. He seems more committed to his teammates and the program. And even if he were to get injured, he'd still be a high lottery pick. Joel Embiid was injured before the draft and wouldn't play for two years and everyone would take him No. 1 now instead of No. 3. Michael Porter Jr. last year got into the lottery even with back surgery and knowing he wouldn't play for at least a year. Williamson doesn't seem the kind of person interested in money only. If he chooses that way, fine. It's his decision and no one will hold it against him. I'd be surprised if he did. But more so, I'd be concerned about injury and longevity given his size, and more than splitting his sneakers. I'm not a doctor and all that, but it seems this era is overwhelmed with injuries despite the incredible medical and training specialists for every team because of the way we (not me) push our bodies to ends perhaps too excessive. It seems like there's the potential for an unusual amount of strain and torque on the joints, as you suggest, with almost 300 pounds on that size of a body given he's not that tall. There's only so much the knees can take. I'm sure he'll be able to shoot at least as well as Barkley, though I see him more like an Anthony Davis kind of player—not necessarily the same style— but what I'd call a finisher instead of a starter.
The biggest impact stars of the game are the players who start the play with speed and ball handling and push, like LeBron and Durant and Harden and George and Westbrook and Curry. The finishers are players like Davis or Klay Thompson who get the ball from someone and then finish the play. They're great to have, but if they're you're best you probably aren't at the ultimate elite level. It's not to suggest Williamson won't be a superstar. We've hardly seen him play enough, and I cannot see anyone not making him the No. 1 pick in the draft. Because we've really never seen anyone like him, and when someone like that comes along you take him and find a way. No matter how good Markkanen is, Williamson would not be a Bulls backup. Or a backup even on the Warriors. But it is a reasonable point about the point. The Bulls may need my definition of a starter the most.
Meanwhile, as anti-tanking plans go, that one sounds like something. Maybe put those better teams in that single elimination thing that comes up occasionally with the seventh and/or eighth place teams in a play in over a few days at the end of the season. Really, if you're seventh or eighth you don't deserve much. Seventh and eighth don't even get into the playoffs in most sports. Then start the playoffs a few days late as that first round goes too long anyway; cut that down. And, I agree, equalize the odds through the worst six or seven teams in a lottery so that trying to get to 14 wins isn't a goal. I'll contact the commissioner once he figures out how to get out of the mess he helped create with the demand that Anthony Davis continue to play for the Pelicans while not caring or trying.
My thoughts looking at the projected top 3 guys: Zion, Barrett and Morant.
Zion - is he starting at small forward over Porter? Probably, but then you'll have a $25M 6th man. Start him at the 4 over Markkanen? Ehhhh... Would Zion be OK not starting??
Barrett- do you put him on the bench in back of Levine? Can he play a bit of small forward? Trade Levine for a point guard?? Would Barrett be OK not starting?
Morant - I hope we get him... Seems like a perfect fit. Dunn seems like a great backup point guard on a good team.
Joe Dobrzynski
Sam: I've noticed the discussion these days is not so intense about losing games with the percentages the same at 14 for the bottom three and then 12.5 for four, which is where the Bulls now are. But position does matter. The Bulls are playing out the rest of the season to win games. With the addition of Otto Porter Jr. and Lauri Markkanen finally healthy and playing at a higher level, they'll win a reasonable number games. The way it still works in the lottery is once the top three picks are determined—and usually one team breaks through from the bottom—the selections go in order of standings. So if, say, the team with the sixth best odds moves up to No. 1, then the records count for the succeeding draft slots. So the team with the worst record then goes second, the second worst gets third and so on. So like last season, if you're third maybe you get this year's version of Luka Doncic. And if you're fifth or sixth, well, I really haven't watched enough college basketball yet to know. The consensus seems to be your three guys will be gone by four. Like everyone else, I've mostly watched Duke and I think LaVine and Markkanen are better than everyone else I've seen not named Zion. Though you'd think with Illinois already naming a far Chicago suburb after Williamson, it's kismet.
So, here we (maybe) are again. The Bulls may have an opportunity to draft a guy who's a consensus can't-miss, rare talent...who sprained his knee towards the end of his college career. Although the result the first time around was thrilling and I don't regret any part of it as a fan...I'm not sure I'm prepared to do that again after watching that shoe-fail incident and Zion's attendant knee sprain. Besides...we have two awesome power forwards and a top-ten 3 just acquired. We need a point guard, and there's a really good one available. Even if the Bulls (again, not even as odds-against this time) luck into the number one pick overall, they should take the PG from Murray State. Shouldn't they?
Chris Granner
Sam: There are reasons to pass on Williamson, though a knee sprain—assuming it's just that—is not uncommon. But there's that torque from that incredible body. Derrick Rose wasn't even a consensus No. 1. It's been players like LeBron, Patrick Ewing, Anthony Davis, Tim Duncan, Shaquille O'Neal. And Hakeem Olajuwon over Michael Jordan and Greg Oden over Kevin Durant. Should they? I'm wondering more, would they? I doubt it.
Joel Embiid has knee issues, hopefully not serious, but who knows? Then Zion goes down on a freaky first possession play. Maybe a point in the "tanking is bad" club? So you want to tank like the 76ers and take 5 or more years to be relevant and then uh oh maybe your main guy still has knee issues!? You want to tank to get Zion now? Can this get worse for him or could this just be an isolated incident? Just shows it is never a guarantee unless you are the machine that is Lebron James.
Jon Kueper
Sam: The holy grail in sports is the elite superstar player, and no one knows how to get one. They just kind of land on your team and then you take bows. You think the Warriors knew about Curry at No. 7 in the draft? They almost traded him instead of Monta Ellis. You think the Bucks knew about Giannis? They were trying to trade that non lottery pick all over the league that season and when they couldn't get much they did a what the heck. Michael Beasley and O.J. Mayo went before Westbrook in the 2008 Derrick Rose draft, and then Mayo was traded to get Kevin Love, taken below Westbrook. No one knows how you get a player like that unless it's obvious, like LeBron or perhaps now Zion. So you take your shot because otherwise you'll generally just keep trying, anyway. Ask the Portland Trailblazers when everyone knew the next one was Greg Oden. In the meantime, you keep putting together enough talent, like the Bulls are doing now, to become competitive. And then you hope—which is everyone's plan—to get lucky in the draft or free agency or someone's owner decides James Harden isn't worth the extra $5 million.
Too many teams have created max contract spaces than there are premier, tier one free agent players. Some stars may not want to play in a specific market or for a weak team. It's a reasonable expectation that some teams with abundant cap space will not be able to sign preferred players. This sounds like a rerun of the Krause two full boat debacle with Mercer and Boozer but with more teams. A team like the Knicks with a very high pick may be "forced" into a trade to acquire good tier one talent. Assume for the moment that the Knicks were desperate for a player like Davis and were offering their lottery pick. How does the draft pick trade off against a Davis salary and the salary cap? Would the Knicks need to add additional players in that trade to match up the salaries? Are draft picks salary slotted? How are future picks valued? It would seem that pre draft trades and later free agent signings and trades will be more prevalent and especially interesting this year and be somewhat uncharted territory.
John Petersen
Sam: It's another reason we love the NBA. Relax, there's always basketball games talk. Especially playoff time, which is coming most places. The gossip, which always has been part of the NBA back to Wilt demanding trades and Oscar picking his spot with the first real no trade clause, helps make the league special. Draft picks have zero value versus salary until the players sign contracts. Maybe, as speculated and lip read at the All-Star game, Irving and Durant choose the Knicks. Durant would be making the biggest mistake of his career, though what fun we all could have driving him nuts because he reads every Tweet. I can see Irving going to the Knicks because he's always talked about finishing near where he grew up in New Jersey. Plus, I think a part of the Celtics dysfunction this season was the way he bailed out on the team in the playoffs last season and wouldn't even show up for the closing playoff game. Elective surgery from a November injury the day of Game 7? Seriously? Probably didn't want to see LeBron dance after getting himself out of there. Draft picks obviously carry intrinsic value because of their (often inflated) worth in this era.
The reason the Porter trade made sense for the Bulls was the path to attracting free agents is a better record. As Krause painfully discovered. Now we know top guys don't want to be builders. They prefer being joiners. I can see Durant if he chooses to leave, which I wouldn't but which would open up the West, going to the Mavericks or the best place probably would be the Clippers with Leonard. With Kawhi and the guys they have like Lou Williams, the Clippers probably would be better than the Warriors without Durant. Then the West would be wide open, also. If a team like the Knicks got No. 1, it likely would be enough to sell to their fans, like when they got Patrick Ewing in the first lottery, and provide enough hope not to do anything radical. From there, a team can start getting serious. It's ironic that the Bulls were candid and forthcoming and mostly got attacked for it. It made sense to add a veteran like Porter to their young players to eventually get in position for free agency rather than pursuing the fantasy that Durant or Leonard couldn't wait to join a 19-win team and then hear, see, we told you the team would not get a free agent. So why didn't you go for someone like Otto Porter?
Does the Porter trade signal the end of the 'younger and more athletic' phase of the rebuild? Seems to me like they have the pieces they want in place and the focus is on developing them and hoping at least one takes the leap to the next level. Unless we have a top 2 draft pick and get either Zion or Morant, we're likely to add a backup wing/forward. Plan A should be to bring in veteran mentors for the young Bulls. I'd love to see them use their 20ish million in cap space to bring in a combination of players like Rondo, Vince Carter, Danny Green, Taj, and resign RoLo.
Brodie Larsh
Sam: Carmelo should be available, too. Maybe Jordan makes a comeback. You know the commissioner would add him as that 13th guy for the 2020 All-Star game. He and Dominique in the slam dunk. Now that would be something to see. That's a bit too veteran, I'd say. I could see Taj, though I think Taj would rather go somewhere he could play more. I doubt he sees himself as the mentor quite yet.
The problem with bringing in those aging veterans no matter how good it sounds to many fans and media is the players don't much listen to them if they can't play anymore. It's like your parents telling you about what they did. Players roll their eyes, too. With Porter, I think the Bulls are in a good place at, going by the numbers, two, three and four. Wendell Carter is perhaps at five, but they also need some depth and size there. And, of course, there's Dunn and the point guard conundrum. Can he be the guy? If not, you need a fairly high level starter because this time, no really, this time the Bulls have to be playing to be a playoff contender. With Markkanen going into his third season and Zach into his sixth, there's no younger anymore. Porter is a head start into that. We'll, of course, wait out the luck of the lottery and draft. But I expect the addition to be a starter or capable of that. With so many free agents and so many likely to return to their teams, it's too soon to know who even will be there. I expect several new Bulls faces who don't know where the G-league cities are.
Kaiser Gates of the G League Bulls looks ready to come onto the NBA Bulls. He was the Big East's best shooter. I could see him really contributing off the bench as a sharpshooter. And with his size at 6"8 he trumps Blakeney and Alkins. What do you think of bringing him up now?
Ryan Carpel
Sam: Even though guys play for the Windy City team, they are not Bulls minor leaguers. That's only the two-way players, Alkins and Sampson. All the others can sign with any NBA teams. So the Bulls have to have a roster spot to sign someone on a 10-day contract. I think they do have one open, but Hutchison should return soon and I don't know if there's much point in carrying another backup big man at a time they appear to be trying to play a more open game. Is this a tanking thing?
Am I the only one questioning how Anthony Davis can leave a regular season game (and arena) due to a "shoulder injury" but still deem himself able to play in the All Star game? Also why doesn't Adam Silver intervene?
Anthony Reed
Sam: Plus the Cubs, I hear, feel Sammy Sosa may have made him do it and aren't allowing Davis to come back, either, given their historic anger about anyone leaving early.
What are the odds the Bulls bring back Luol? watching the Bulls haven't been the same since they traded him and it would be nice to see him retire a Bull!
Joseph Higgins
Sam: Well, I suggested that recently for Noah and Rose; at least the retirement part. Actually, Lu could be one of those veterans that might be fine closing it out being the bench mentor. How much anyone 22 would listen is another thing, though it would work for me. Though that stuff didn't work too well in the early 2000s when the Bulls brought back Scottie Pippen, Will Perdue B.J. Armstrong and Charles Oakley. Tough to see these guys finish on those 60-loss teams.
Am I right in noticing that amongst the under-25 players in the NBA, the cream of the non-USA players are clearly better than the cream of the USA players?
Simmons, Doncic, Giannis, Embiid... maybe KP or later Markkanen for PF. What group of USA 25 and under is beating that?
Alejandro Yegros
Sam: And you left out Jokic and Porzingis. It is an interesting evolution, and at least demonstrates what we often fail to accept in the United States, that there's excellent athletic talent everywhere. Notice they usually lose the Ryder Cup golf, also. This should be viewed as a positive for the NBA, which remains without walls. You know, Basketball without Borders. Obviously, the depth of talent still is from the United States given our infrastructure. But what we are seeing is more fundamentally sound, mature players coming from outside the U.S. because of our flawed and often corrupt AAU and prep feeder systems. The training and coaching overseas tends to be more disciplined. I suspect it accounts for many U.S. players not reaching their potential, which also helps explains the surfeit of depth. We've got a lot of kids, but they jump around to schools and AAU teams in mostly informal competition and then into the NBA. And aren't ready. It can short circuit a career. I remember when the NBA started the high school direct to pros. Obviously there were some great players, but I remember one GM telling me many of the players who'll be hall of Famers now would max out as all stars, and the players who might be all stars would max out as just good players. Can't prove it either way, but I would not be surprised. So many of these players from overseas are on professional teams playing with adults at a younger age and knowing the game better. Which also is a reason why as they get older and learn the game and competition more, it's so many U.S.-born players who emerge at the top. There are enough developing, young NBA players now no to quite embarrass the U.S., like Karl-Anthony Towns, Jayson Tatum, Donovan Mitchell, Marvin Bagley, Jaren Jackson, De'Aaron Fox. The U.S. will be fine; it's good for the game and the country.
I can't seem to understand the lack of recognition Lauri Markkanen is getting from the media outside of Chicago. I was having a look at his stat line this year and thinking that his improvement as a 2nd year 7-footer has been impressive and he is balling at the moment. For comparison, I compared his 2nd year to more 'hyped' young european bigs - Nikola Jokic and Kristaps Porzingis to highlight this
2nd year
Markkanen (35* gms) - MPG 32.3 / 18.5 pts / 8.8 rbs / FG% 43.7 / 3P% 38.3 / 1.3 ast / 0.7 blk (Season ongoing)
Porzingis (66 gms) - MPG 28.4 / 18.1 pts / 7.2 rbs / FG% 45.0 / 3P% 33.3 / 1.5 ast / 2.0 blk
Jokic (73 gms) - MPG 27.9 / 16.7 pts / 9.8 rbs / FG% 57.7 / 3P% 32.2 / 4.9 ast / 0.8 blk
In Porzingis's second season he was being touted as a revolutionary type player who would change the way the NBA was played. Maybe with New York being the centre of the universe for the media it swayed in his favor but still. Jokic wasn't the high pick the other two were but again, his passing ability and strong play had the media gushing at his 'point-centre' style and he quickly came into the calculation for most promising bigs in the league.
My point is Lauri's stat line is equal and if not better to those two in their second years and yet, we do not hear the plaudits that Jokic and Porzingis were getting at this point in their second year. When it comes to top young bigs in the league, I am startled he doesn't at least seem to be in the conversation.
Caleb Slade
Sam: Out of sight, out of mind. The combination of being on a team last year not much interested in winning and then being hurt half this season, and not being in New York while doing so leaves you out of the conversation. Last year he was awfully shy and didn't speak much to media. He's broken out of that this season, but is mostly humble and defers to others. He's a bit too much of a team player sometimes, in my view. I'd rather see him taking 10 "bad" shots than many others' good shots. He doesn't think that way. But people who know, know. That's why despite not playing until December and playing hurt that month, he still was selected a Rising Stars game starter. The coaches know, and when the Bulls improve, as they should substantially next season without another epidemic of injuries, it's not inconceivable Markkanen could be in the All-Star game conversation as Kemba Walker and Khris Middleton were this year. He's got a higher ceiling than both those players, but still a team not on TV much.
Do you think Rajon Rondo will ever be a head coach in the NBA? You could see what happened to the Pels when they let him go, and we all agree pretty much that his absence against Boston cost the Bulls that series two years ago.
Jim Hecimovich
Sam: The NBA is a lot about out of the box, and if I were looking for a coach I would take a chance on Rondo as player/coach. He's pretty much like that when he's on your team the way he works with the young players and always is searching out film and knows every opponent's plays. He's fit enough and smart enough, I think, to handle both in the model of the Hall of Fame's Lenny Wilkens, the last great player/coach. I know it's said now there's too much to do, but, really I'd take my chances. After all, doesn't everyone have about eight assistants hanging around?
Sam, what is a "protected" draft choice. And what is the significance issue and how is it utilized by management?
Mike Kibler
Sam: This continues my NBA 101 since we always take for granted everyone knows what we know because, well, if we know it how hard could it be? Perhaps that didn't come out right. A protected draft choice means it is transmitted to the other team unless it is at a certain position. It's a way for a team to "protect" itself in case they have a poorer season than they expect. So a team wants to make a trade and the other team wants the first round draft pick for the player. There always has to be some value in a trade. But the team receiving the player is afraid something could happen and their season goes bad. So they "protect" the draft pick through, for example, the first 14 picks. It means if it's in the top 14 they keep it. If it's 14 to 30, it goes to the other team. But the other team eventually has to receive something. So there are provisions written in for, say, "protection" through top 10 the following year, top eight after that and so on until the other team eventually gets something. The terms are part of the trade negotiation. Management uses it as something they can add to a trade of value if just, for example, one player for another isn't enough to get the deal done while having "protection" against a disastrous season and the other team then falling into the next Zion. Oh no!
I was listening to sports radio this morning as White Sox fans called in to complain about the team not signing Manny Machado. One caller blamed it on Reinsdorf being cheap. I'm not really writing about that topic. As evidence this caller said, "This is the same guy who when he signed Michael Jordan said, 'I'm going to regret this.'" The hosts, both longtime Chicago radio and newspaper personalities, didn't contradict him on the quote. It's not a quote or story I've heard before so I wonder if you can shed any light on it.
Cameron Watkins
Sam: It is longtime "evidence" that is specious, but why, you know, mess up your bias. This is what happened back then: Jordan, and to his credit with the occasional private compliant, had finished his eight-year $25 million contract. It was groundbreaking and shocking deal at the time, and, of course, outdated in a few years. Michael never demanded a renegotiation, saying he signed it, so he'd live up to it. Yes, how quaint. Obviously, Michael couldn't lower his ethics to be a college coach. But the White Sox did bring him into their minor league system, as he requested after his this-is-really-final 1993 retirement, and paid him his $4 million annual basketball salary even though he was a minor league baseball player.
SamOK, so he returns to the Bulls late in the 1994-95 season and plays for $4 million in the magical 95-96, 72-win season, and is that season about the 150th best paid in the league. He doesn't say much. Now it's time to pay. How much? The salary cap for 1995-96 was $23 million for the entire team. Patrick Ewing was the highest paid in the league at about $18 million. Only six players earned more than $6 million. Jordan asked for about $55 million over two years. The Bulls proposed year by year a deal that, in the end, would work better for Jordan. So they finally agreed on $30 million for one year. Remember, just four teams in the league had entire team salaries that exceeded $30 million. The Knicks were highest at $43 million with Ewing's 18 million. Pay one guy $30 million? Sure, it was Jordan and he brought more attention to the league than anyone. But pay him more than almost 90 percent of the teams? It's like you are buying a $100,000 auto. You say with a laugh to the salesperson you hope it doesn't break down on the way out of the showroom; you know, I hope I'm not making a mistake. Ha ha. So Reinsdorf offered a bit of a quip about the salary, which was with a laugh, "I hope I don't regret this."
SamLook, Jordan and his agent were smiling. There were cigars. No one in American sports ever even thought about a salary like that. The Bulls team salary immediately went to No. 1 in the league and 35 percent more than the second highest, a rare financial gap. Jordan alone was paid more than the entire payrolls of 20 different teams and well above for one player the total salary cap per team. Maybe you'd make a bit of a nervous joke, also, but the negotiation started above the per team total. No player in the league was even making half Jordan's salary. It even seems like a lot 22 years later when today it would still be in the top 10 of current NBA salaries in a period when the salary cap has gone up more than four fold. Which means in today's NBA it would be an annual salary of maybe $135 million. It doesn't strike me as being cheap. But that's just me.

$UICIDEBOY$ and Musical Therapy
Whacky hair. Face tattoos. Teenagers trying to prove how "hard" they are. The current state of rap has me Whacky hair. Face tattoos. Teenagers trying to prove how "hard" they are. The current state of rap has me devastated. With players like Tekashi 6ix9ine and Lil' Pump active in the rap game accompanied by the recent and unexpected loss of Mac Miller has me thinking: "Is this all I have to look forward to? 'Eskeetit?' WHAT DOES THAT EVEN MEAN!?" Surely you know what I mean. Even if you like these two goofy kids-- which I won't judge, I'm sure they have some contribution to the rap industry, maybe a topic for another blog and some tunes can be catchy-- I feel like the emphasis on meaningful lyricism and complex instrumentals faded away. And ever since Damn by Kendrick Lamar came out in spring of 2017 I've been hungry for enticing and unique beats like on "Lust”.
Sophomore year one of my pretentious hip-hip-head friends turned me onto "shadow-rap", a weird hybrid genre between trap, rap, metal, and horrorcore. He busts into my apartment on a Thirsty Thursday, commandeered my speaker, and blasted "Paris": a hardcore banger from the duo $UICIDEBOY$, one of their most popular tracks off of their 2015 album Now the Moon's Rising. I was hooked. Fire lyrics, clever lines ("switchblade on 'em/Hit them guts like a pumpkin", UGH YES!) hard beats that make you want, no, NEED to mosh, even with the clearly immanent threat of bodily injury. Despite the overtones of male violence and drug use-- their lyrical savagery and beats to shake the house was what I was after.
Ruby da Cherry and $crim, a.k.a. 7th Ward Lord/Spooky Da Scary and $lick $loth/Yung $carecrow respectively, are cousins who came together to make music together in 2014. As indicated by their name, these are some sad ass dudes. Plagued by depression and substance abuse issues, the pair is famously known for their suicide pact: to be enacted if they weren't successful in the music industry by age 30, hence their name. The pair creates hip-hop tracks with heavy horror (DISCLAIMER: not horrorcore, which seems to be a common misconception to many of these articles referencing this group. Re: "STOP CALLING US HORRORCORE" from album Radical $uicide [2016]. Like, do they even listen to $UICIDEBOY$?) overtones and grimy, drug hazed lyrics that make you feel delinquent for even having those words cross your ear drums. One can easily hear their inspiration from nihilist group Misfits along with underground trap, rap and screamo accompanied by attitudes left from growing up in disenfranchised neighborhoods in New Orleans, LA.
$UICIDEBOY$' debut album I Want to Die in New Orleans has been long awaited by their fan base, who sat through several delays and even a dramatic album name change from I Don't Want to Die in New Orleans before its final release on September 7th, 2018.
Since, it's reached No. 9 on Billboard Top 200 albums. Me, starving for new greasy content to be in my dark feels to, had eager ears for this album. Take a listen to it here on SoundCloud.
Ok, so it's not for everyone. Violent imagery laced with an overtone of simultaneous egotism and self-hatred accompanied by almost unintelligible yelling is hard to swallow for the faint of heart. But if you could stomach this, you should hear what they really have to offer.
I actually was able to hold off on listening to this album for the first time, with intention of writing this piece specifically. At first, I was not as hyped for this project. I was kind of disappointed with their previous release "F***ALLOFYOU2K18" which didn't have the same bite as projects like KILL YOURSELF Part XVIII: The Fall Of Idols Saga. I totally wish I didn't feel the same way about I Want to Die in New Orleans, but I do. This album to me demonstrates a move away from their more original and grimy beats and move into mainstream music organization and structure; the duo even drifts into different type of content.
Ruby and $crim seemed to have attempted to make their music more plateable. Previous work seemed to go against the feeding of the industrial pop/rap industry focused on producing the next hot banger rather than music that matters. They even indicate these in even naming one of the songs on the album "F*** THE INDUSTRY". Claiming to be "the black sheep of the music industry" contrasting to their previous work this album is a watered down version of their essence. The pair integrates more pop structure into their usually unusually structured tracks; catchy choruses and simpler beats like in "NICOTINE PATCHES", "MEET MR. NICE GUY" and "PHANTOM MENACE" (both total bangers, I'm just unimpressed with their simplicity). However this is seemingly balanced out in "WAR ALL THE TIME", maybe the hardest track on the album.
Despite this, the content of their music seems to have both revolutionized and remained similar to their previous content. What I noticed in this project is the constant reminder of their influence and clout in the rap game in a sort of egotism that we only heard every once in a while from $UICIDEBOY$.
Something I do love about Ruby and $crim is that they are known for their utilization of samples. I noticed right away the "bookends" of samples in I Want to Die in New Orleans, first track "King Tulip" starting out with a commentary on the duo's impact on rap:
They changed so much, you know what I'm saying? How did these two motherf***ers, from New Orleans... How did they change- how did they change music (laughter)
...with the 'answer' of such comment being at the end of "F*** the Industry" given in the form of a eulogy by early underground rapper Bones:
We are gathered here today to remember the lives of Ruby and $crim, also known to many as the $UICIDEBOY$. What they gave to this world while they were here, was unexplainable. You know, we're all here, maybe... Today we can share some memories, walk around, my name is Ricky Kekney. Hey, I'm Ricky, if you don't know me you can come up to me, don't feel uncomfortable. I, I know... I know I give off a stand-offish vibe... I don't feel uncomfortable. We'll talk, come up to me, we'll talk about the boys, we'll celebrate today. Today is about celebrating the lives of two legends. Before we start sharing stories, I would like everybody to bow their head for ten seconds, in remembrance
Wow, right? I'm kind of interested in how much Ruby and $crim self-identify themselves as huge players in the shadow rap genre now that they've blown up more. Although exploring their confidence or even brazen testimony to their greatness a lot more in this album, it is not unchecked. Yeah, they are kind of great at what they do. Ruby even says outright in lyrical break down of "CARROLLTON" that "lyrically, [he] wanted to just like write about swagging out or just bragging about being a piece of sh**" However, all this clout doesn't come without reminder of who the real $UICIDEBOY$ were before the fame: drug users suffering mental anguish. There is a huge dynamic between being the best but feeling the absolute worst, like in "MR. NICE GUY": heartbreak means turning to the bottle and the bar. Even with fame, they are still battling their demons as they describe scenes of violence and using drugs as a crutch of life in pretty much every song. And, well, they're down with their demons. And no doubt, the pair uses their music to voice it.
Despite being on the outskirts of rap, $UICIDEBOY$' popularity seems to have encouraged them to incorporate elements from mainstream pop and rap, like structure and beat, into their previously incredibly niche music. Changing their style to something more tolerable to the masses while retaining their lyrics as an outlet for their own struggles still appeals to their loyal fans. The beat may have changed, but the boys keep their lyrics as a direct line to fans in voicing their troubles and depression as an outlet. I Want to Die in New Orleans holds onto the original content of gory fascination and shunning sobriety while still trying to appeal to a larger audience: maintaining the purpose of their music even with a bit of a facelift.
All in all, this album is a good listen. There were a couple of tracks I could have done without, but if you are interested in any related genre to shadow rap (metal, screamo, trap, rap, etc.,) it is a good gateway album into their music. I appreciate their continued honesty in their words, and the art of personas is definitely mastered by them. I Want to Die in New Orleans displays appreciation for where they've been and anticipation of where they're going in the music industry: but not without the grittiness of their very real pain.
Highlighted Tracks:
NICOTINE PATCHES PHANTOM MENACE WAR ALL THE TIME CARROLLTON
