Hi I don't know what the fuck im talking about here is a weirdly personal ramble about Tavros from my homestuck rotten brain I sent my friends from the fucking hairdresser:

Im having such complex thoughts on tavros while the pink dye is being applied so I put them here rather than subject my poor hairstylist to them: im just thinking about how like, he's a "late bloomer" so to say. Like, he still plays childish games, he's obsessed with fairies and pupa pan and games. His life sucks, and just keeps going downhill, and it makes him retreat into these sources of escapism, but its not actually solving the problem. I think about him telling Jade "the only fun I ever had playing this game is when I was asleep" a lot. He's a heartbreak feeling left behind by your peers. I see a lot of 20 such year olds freaking out over how they have friends getting married and having careers, but its also something so entrenched in puberty. You feel left behind socially as kids around you start getting their owns complexes to disregard and abandon "childish" things. This is seen so many times, a lot in Vriska but also a lot of the other trolls and even the kids, and a lot of them expressthis *to Tavros* . But tavros doesn't abandon this things, they're like, the best things in his life. Like, ni wonder he didn't know what to do when vriska kissed him, or when gamzee offered to make out, I would have had the same reaction at that age. Meanwhile I have heard people directly talk to me in 8th grade about having make out session in previous years. This doesn't have a point, im just having a lot of thoughts I can even imagine how long this is by now oh boy I guess its also like, I know I keep hammering home how the story seems to forget how young its own characters are, but tavros very much feels his age.

Yeah anyways I may be unpacking further why I relate (me at 13) to tavros. I was always friends people younger than me, I was into "childish" things, absolutely massive prude, I didn't even start my period until 8th grade. I understand how he's feeling, especially being pushed so much by vriska to grow up. She has that part talking about how he's always too late. Sorry "l8" "too l8 to kiss me. Too l8 to kill me." And everything she does doesnt work, if anything it does the opposite. She says she wants to make him stronger, but she's the reason he's disabled. She wants him to grow a spine, to fight back at her, but all of her lashing out only tears him down more, she wants him to kill her when she ascends to godhood, but he can't and its implied he was ashamed and horrified and he slept so much to escape thinking about it. He's falling behind, and he's not able to help his team the same way, I won't deny that, but can you *really* blame him? Hes a sad, scared, lonely kid, and his life frankly kinda sucks my poor little meow meow out in the rain. But like yes he does very little to actually fight back and improve his situation. He's very passive, things really just happen to him. Wow ok for surface level tavros is my son, but also he *is* pretty annoying, but also he's me at 13, but also a wet cat in the rain and its a lite his fault but thats gonna be a whole other tangent becauseI haven't even gotten into how well he maintainsa smile, but also fuck vriska a little bit, she's **really** not helping

Homestuck^2: How I’d write the Omega Kids (and the Candy timeline villains)

I haven't reread Homestuck nor the epilogues in a while so correct me if I'm wrong with anything here. This was all in one go, too, so I probably missed something here or there. I'm also not a native English speaker so pardon some grammar errors.

In General

I’d give them a five-letter name scheme. Names of a group being the same length was a big deal in original HS (human first names had four letters, troll names had six, Ancestors had eight-letter titles, Cherubs had eight letters too, etc.), so it’s odd seeing this new group have names of varying length

I’d also give them all shirt symbols. It’s odd that something so iconic to Homestuck isn’t present in the new kids, either.

I'll write for both the canon post-canon with evil Jane and for my own version with different villains. Evil Jane happens because a highblood troll who hears of the old ways of Alternia attempts to kill her and take her crown, as she's technically the heiress. Jane wins, but she starts to see trolls and Alternian culture in a different light from then on. At first she was only trying to prevent the worst parts of Alternian culture from coming back, but over time grew to despise trolls, and ended up trying to force human culture onto Alternians.

The other Candy villains are a dangerous terrorist rebel group that wants to overthrow the creators and destroy them. They say the creators made the people, abandoned the people for years, then suddenly came back and decided they control the people. The group is made of humans, trolls, carapacians, and even consorts. The mysterious shadowed leader claims to be doing this for the people, but really, all they want is to have control for themselves, and they don't care if any innocents get in the way.

Harry Anderson

Has nothing to fix, he’s perfect as is

Okay but seriously, the guy is the kid with the least questionable things around him. He has no baggage from sharing the same name as an established character (ICP Harry Anderson doesn’t count), and he didn’t come from infidelity.

He also has actual color to his personality. He likes musicals and sewing. He has a good relationship with his dad. Like many kids with divorced parents, he wishes his parents were together again. What do the others have? Vrissy is just a slightly less aggressive Vriska. Tavros is just OG Tavros and Jake combined. Yiffy’s thing is being a dog girl named Yiffany Longstocking. The others could be fleshed out eventually, but with the slow pace and meandering plot we have right now, I doubt it.

If Jane's the villain, things would mostly go the same way. If Jane isn't the villain, it goes two ways: he decides to join Vrissy's guerilla anti-anti-creator group and fight because he wants to protect his parents, or he's just very anti-conflict and avoids the fight because he doesn't think he's up to it. He's frequently threatened but doesn't tell his parents about the threats. Eventually, he gets convinced to join and fight.

Vrissy

So Vrissy’s in relationships with guys who are technically her cousins. At first I was like “well, they’re not biologically related nor were they raised as family so it’s not weird”. But then Tavros called Kanaya “Aunt Kanaya” and now I’m thinking “oh god, that’s really weird”.

Now she’s just a troll girl from school. She's just close to Kanaya and Rose, but isn’t their kid. She isn’t related to anyone. Anyone except Vriska, who she was named after. Vrissy’s new nickname is just Vriss.

Alternatively, her name is something completely different. Honestly, it just seemed like a way to shoehorn in a Vriska for the story. Only for actual Vriska to come back anyway.

Uhh, Eshtha (from Jyeshtha, a Hindu nakshatra Scorpius is associated with)? Oriona (from Orion, the myth where Scorpius is mostly attributed to)? Naiaka (from Manaiakalani, as Hawaiians saw Scorpius as the demigod Maui’s fishhook)? Oh wait, I’ll have to make nicknames for those names too. Uh, Eshty, Riona, and Naiah.

Maybe have her have a personality that’s rather opposite to Vriska’s than have her as Vriska 2. She's more a perky goth, more cheerful and sweet. More "I knew you could do it!" than "So you can do something after all." A beast in battle, of course. She doesn't like to use her mind control powers, because she finds them disturbing.

If Vriska had to come back, the conflict would come from their conflicting personalities. Vriska would pretty much act the same way she did to (Vriska), but this time, Vriss doesn't take any of it and stands her ground.

Whether the villain is Jane or not, she's the one who decides to fight back, and she gets her friends and others to join her. The creators have been nothing but good to her, and she cares about them a lot, especially Rose and Kanaya. Not to mention they're also her friends' parents.

Tavros

Yeah, we’re gonna have to rename that kid. It never made sense to me why Jake and Jane named their kid after some guy they don’t know that well. I don’t remember everything from the Epilogues, but I’ll assume the reason was Gamzee or something. Also weird that Jane, who’s supposed to be racist to trolls, would just...let her kid be named after one.

Something old-ish would work. Flynn? Silas? Avery? Clyde? Niles? Louie?

He's moirails with this Vriss instead of kismeses. The Vrissy/Tavros kismesis also felt like re-hashing the kismesis that Vriska and OG Tavros kinda had.

If we went post-canon villain Jane, he'd be reluctant to join the rebellion and is more of a pacifist who would rather try to talk his mom out of it.

Alternatively, Jane and Jake are separated (but not divorced) and he lives with Jake. Because Jane was never terrible to him and Jake doesn't tell him how bad she's gotten, he disagrees with her but still tries to justify and rationalize that Jane's really doing it from a place of good intentions.

If the villain isn't Jane, then Jane and Jake have been hiding him away, and his friends can only see him when they visit him at his swanky home. You might say he's...housetrapped. He joins because his friends are in it, and doesn't quite grasp how serious things are until the rebels try to kill Jane (the rebels try to kill Jane first because you always kill the healer first).

He's in contact with a mysterious guide who's kinda spacy and a little terrifying at times. His friends think the guide might just be some creepy predator. It's revealed to be Candy Gamzee, out of the fridge and legitimately harmless, but untraceable and doing mysterious things behind the black. Again.

Come to think of it, Dirk's missing too...

Yiffany Longstocking

Yiffy is now the ectokid of Dave and Jade. She looks more like a DaveJade kid than JadeRose, really. Dave and Jade are also either happily married or coming close to an amicable divorce. Yeah, the toxic shit Jade did and the erasure of Dave's bisexuality also don't exist here. Jade, Dave, Karkat, and Terezi are backing Vrissy's anti-anti-creator group.

Her new name is something unisex. Riley? Logan? Robin? Sloan? Salem?

She spends a lot of time outside doing sports and doesn't talk much. She's not very close to the other three kids, but she's surprisingly pretty close to her Aunt Rose.

While Jade and Dave are out on a mission for Karkat (this is the mission Candy Dave dies), she gets kidnapped by the opposing force (Jane/the terrorists). She gets a shock collar forced on her, then is hidden away in a Boarding School for Inconvenient Girls, enrolled under the name "Yiffany Longstocking". Jade comes home to find that her family's been taken from her. Again.

Yiffy almost escapes, but she gets knocked out and taken back to base, where they lock her in a cage and treat her like a dog. She's still defiant to the end.

If Jane's the villain, Jake is inspired by Yiffy's defiance, grows some balls, exposes Yiffy's treatment to the press, and sets her free. She beats up the guards trying to stop her. Jake gets surrounded by more guards. In response, he pulls out his pistols and a one-liner, and bam, cliffhanger.

If it's the terrorist group, Terezi picks up on Yiffy's scent when they're in a base, and she's saved by the other three kids, where she immediately turns around and beats the crap out of the guards. They become proper friends from there.

The reunion panel still happens and this time it's her reuniting with her loving mother and aunt instead of...y'know.

BONUS: Sadstuck

Harry gets his own “im not a hero” speech after trying and “failing” to be the hero that John was

Vriss is eventually forced to use her mind control powers. It’s either a “Katara using bloodbending" situation, or she forces her friends to leave her behind when they want to stick by her.

Tavros finally witnesses his mother’s true nature when Jake defeats all the guards, but is stabbed from behind by Jane and killed. In the other version, it seems Jane is finally safe and able to come home to her son. Then she’s killed right in front of him.

After the big hug with Jade and Rose, Yiffy pulls away. She smiles, looks around behind them, and asks “Where’s Dad?”

So he’s probably been a bastard ever since Lord English started existing, which I mean “I am already here” blahblah means Dirk was very likely like this from the start potentially, but he was probbaly only really a bastard ever since Arquis got sucked into Caliborn/Gamzee

yeah that note was probably the last shredded remnants of good dirk since there’s literally no reason to leave a sentimental note like that for his friends, makes sense Gamzee was guided by “a higher power” to grab it and make sure it gets relayed more like ruined to his friends

John Egbert, lover of Con Air and Nic Cage, has a loving wife and (probably) daughter and NOT ONCE has this narrative shown them OR made the joke, we just absolutely passed over the whole wedding and birth event in one fell swoop of unrequited feelings jam with another woman

Why is Roxy praying? That’s such a weird thing to drop as a small detail, who would she even be praying too?

Wait, is that what Rose said at the beginning? No it isn’t, I remember the bit about John has to go back inside canon and defeat Lord English, I don’t think the method was ever fully explained though, nor the idea that he had to defeat him as a kid, it was never said he had to go back in time, just go back to canon

and that’s not what happened in the Meat timeline either! Nobody went back in time to defeat Caliborn when he was a kid, they just had the big showdown with LE exactly the way Rose is describing that went horribly wrong

this is practically screaming NEITHER Meat or Candy is the true version of events 

Actually yeah, defeating Caliborn really IS the way this should be settled, because it’s also the way that Dirk get saved as well, can’t get his ultimate self tainted if the taint is destroyed before it ever comes into contact with him

also im rereading the prologue now, it’s is NEVER explicitly said that John has to go and defeat lord english’s child form!

She said “you have to go back to canon to defeat LE” NOT go back in time to defeat caliborn

and “you can’t recklessly attack his hulking adult form without the house juju”

not “you can’t attack him as an adult at all” but “you can do that WITHOUT the juju” and describes it being used in the same way that Vriska ended up doing in Meat

yeah, she never mentions any plan to defeat him as a child in the prologue, which probably means Rose only saw a vision of his defeat as an adult as well

It’s gonna be JOHN who gets the idea to go back and kill him as a kid, because that’s how he understood Rose’s instructions!

But this is great, everything is vaguely worded enough that it COULD be applied to a fight against a young caliborn too! but just hasn’t yet!

What if you take the empty cursor and fill it with a young caliborn? instead of unleashing a full one against an adult LE? which proves to be pretty useless in the long run despite Rose’s apparent clouded vision?

Rose even says herself its only purpose is as an empty vessel meant to be filled by something, talk about totally understanding yet missing the point, this is probably what she meant by being unable to see any path beyond the meat or candy routes, she couldnt see the possibility of using the juju on caliborn before everything goes down just like how it was used on John and friends to trap them in there in Meat!

It’s Caliborn’s destined time out spot! Removing him from Canon and from being able to influence it without needing to kill someone who technically hasnt done bad things yet but absolutely will in the future solving the baby adolf problem with Caliborn

Oh man, what if they even trick Caliborn on using it against himself? talk about an earthbound reference, defeat Gigyas (LE) by tricking Pokey (Caliborn)  to trap himself in the "Absolutely Safe Capsule” (House JuJu)

Oh man back on the Candy train though John’s having an absolute breakdown, being infused with that canon retcon power seems to be the only thing preserving his ability to care about stuff beyond this happy drugged up paradise

honestly it would just have to be like who tf is this bastard bc he is the first panel of homestuck… idk he is a sweet & silly boy and i love him i think 14 y/o me liked him mostly as a foil for other characters i loved bc i tended to ship him a lot (namely karkat dave and vriska *comphet shudder* i still love a pale johnvris tho)

wow ive been through a lot with this boy… idk he honestly has grown a lot but not in any sort of way i could relate to? like i always loved him a lot but as the post act five updates started rolling out i just found it a lot easier to identify with dave rose and jade’s character growth? and the way that he started to get so immensely dissatisfied with his situation KIND OF historically mirrored me falling out with homestuck like. in 2015 when i started college and it was on hiatus near constantly i sort of stopped engaging with the fandom right alongside john starting to disengage from the narrative itself lmao but yeah

hes a good kid. goku-aligned. epilogue “epic divorce man” john do not interact

oh boy i absolutely LOVE his act 5 interactions with the trolls… and the kids honestly all of them he is a smug bastard who loves his friends and enthusiastically gets to know a bunch of alien children threatening him with death lmfao the “hi karkat!” log still gets me to this day.

Idea for a story

LOL i have no idea uhh. i rewrite the epilogue but instead of john being unfortunately heterosexual and marrying roxy while emotionally involved with terezi of all people ?? not the point anyway he actually talks with his friends about shit because i swear that boy is the most compulsively heterosexual character in the story hes worse than dave bc he was completely isolated with his twin sister on a ship for the majority of his formative teen years… im going no where with this i would just like john to have some emotional vulnerability

oof ok i sort of just started going into this johnkat still holds a very dear place in my heart (@ promstuck ) but unfortunately i just dont think the post act 5 characterization aged that ship very well. johndave is cute but kind of boring (im sorry hayden) but tbh with the way john grew up?? i like dirkjohn a lot i think they could be good together because john has more of a fucking backbone then jake and would be a perfectly affectionate dick to dirk. he needs that. Epilogues: Candy, chapters 6-13 [the rest of Epilogue 2]

I’m told that there are 40 chapters, and a postscript, in Candy - and also that it’s split into 8 individual ‘epilogues’ within that, of varying length. ‘Epilogue 2′ began with chapter 4, featuring Rose and Kanaya. So I kind of cut it off in exactly the wrong place. Oops!

Anyway I’m going to split these up by Epilogue section from now on. This one covers the rest of Epilogue 2, which mostly concerns shipping, and processing of feelings.

Here are the irons in the fire at the outset of chapter 6:

Gamzee is back! he claims to be setting out on a ‘redemption arc’

Terezi is in space somewhere looking for Vriska, but set to return at some point, and not all that happy that Gamzee’s back

Dirk has perceived some bad news. And briefly spoken about it with Jane, though without explaining anything.

But that’s all Epilogue 1 stuff - old hat!

Rose has suddenly recovered from her illness, and is patching things up with Kanaya

Jade has attempted to push Dave and Karkat to admit they’re into each other, but really just made things worse

Jane attempted to run for President of Earth C - to the trepidation of the Karkat, who hyperbolically suggested this would amount to troll genocide - but abandoned the idea

That’s all interesting but let’s talk about money! This is something I didn’t pick up on in the last post:

KARKAT: OK, SO LET ME GET THIS STRAIGHT. YOUR PRIORITIES ARE: NUMBER ONE, THE ECONOMY, WHICH LET ME REMIND YOU IS BUILT ENTIRELY ON INFINITE, FAKE MONEY THAT WE CAN MAKE AS MUCH OF AS WE WANT.

Elsewhere, Jane’s megacorp and stocks are mentioned.

One wonders why, given the machinery to manufacture just about anything by means of alchemizer, the forms of money, stocks, and corporations are retained... what sort of productive and reproductive labour is regulated and mediated by these markets? Or are they merely acting out the vestigial forms of capitalism as a bizarre drama...

As for the consequences of an infinite money supply, let’s not get into the ‘modern monetary theory’ debate on a Homestuck post, maybe.

on to chapter 6+

This is a Jane chapter. It opens almost immediately with economic discussion; Dave apparently once accused Jane of ‘neoliberal corporate welfare’ for trying to bolster the ‘struggling locksmith industry’ rendered unnecessary on a planet without crime.

She’s visiting Jake, who’s probably my least favourite Homestuck character (who’s not an alpha troll). About Dirk... Jake (Jane says) seems to still have a bit of a thing for him, and Jane, meanwhile, still “has no idea why she can’t get [Jake] out of her system, even after all these years.”

The reason Jane cancelled her run was, it turns out, because Dirk said ‘cancel everything’. She gets drunk, very quickly... and hits on Jake, who is completely oblivious to her advances. She speaks of wanting to abandon business to raise a family, which Jake himself notes is something rather new for her (though the whole traditional gender thing she does isn’t lol)

Jake/Jane isn’t a ship I have any sort of opinion about, honestly. Dirk/Jake’s terrible collapsing relationship was kind of interesting but yeah, here’s a thing. What even are heterosexuals though? “I want to clean your giant house and have a lot of children”... incomprehensible!

One thing I will give credit for is the narration: it creates pretty strong images of like, these characters as fully embodied people, being intimate in like, subtle physical ways. that probably doesn’t make a lot of sense... whatever lol. it works

chapter 7

...brings us back to Gamzee. fittingly, i’m listening to the friendsim soundtrack as i read this, and i just hit ‘take me to clown church’.

anyway since this whole story basically seems to be an exercise in developing ships along the lines of ‘A is into B, B is obvious to their advances’... Roxy’s hot for John now I guess? or at least, so Callie thinks. she insists they’re all going to be ‘very, very happy’ despite her disappointment.

anyway, then we get Gamzee saying a bunch of casually misogynist stuff to John about Roxy. in this context, basically two interpretations are shown: a shallow ‘oh he’s redeemed now’ attitude from Roxy and Callie, and a ‘oh god i hate this person keep him away from me’ attitude from John. Gamzee’s repulsive qualities are underlined by the narration (from John’s perspective): he’s unhygienic, he’s casually misogynist (which seems like a new element, and rather out of keeping with the gendered-but-somehow-theoretically-not-patriarchal Alternia)...

chapter 8

Rose and Kanaya chapter. Jane’s possible presidency is once again the subject of discussion. Jane apparently wanted to apply some kind of anti-troll eugenics policy, and tried to bring Kanaya on board - and got told to fuck off for it. Our two good lesbians agree that, if Karkat were president (and Dave running the economy), things might have worked out ok...

We are briefly introduced to a new character, a jadeblood troll called Swifer Eggmop. Her character archetype, we are directly told, is ‘1920s newsboy’.

We bear witness to an egg hatching (in prose, anyway). This particular baby grub out closely resembling Vriska... which Kanaya says is because she comes from a slurry based on the original 12 trolls. Rose notes this would make Vriska the troll’s Ancestor, which raises an interesting question of whether Ancestors still exist as a social concept on Earth C. Anyway, Kanaya wants to adopt baby Vriska, which can only be a fantastic idea...

KANAYA: There Are Two Things Of Which I Have No Doubt

KANAYA: That You And I Are Going To Be Happy For The Rest Of Our Lives

KANAYA: And That We Are Never Ever Going To See Vriska Again

I think we can safely assume that neither of those things are true. The emphasis on ‘happiness forever’, voiced by multiple characters, is interesting... also the turn towards reproduction.

I went to uni with people who have kids now. Heck I have friends who have a child (who they are trying to spare from gender)... but for most of my social circle, which is to say almost entirely 20-to-30-something trans women, even the idea of adopting is incomprehensible? It’s somehow weird to think of ‘wanting kids’ as the narrative of 20-something year olds...

Kanaya is right. Vriska is dead, and despite everything, she died a hero. Vriska was a complicated figure of contrasting extremes; her heroic actions were matched in scale only by her monstrous ones, and since no one had actually witnessed her end, it was impossible to say which side the pendulum swung and judged her death—Heroic or Just.

It would be a fitting memorial for her and Kanaya to raise a version of Vriska who would be given every chance to make good on her noble characteristics. A true, symbolic redemption arc. Something about the thought appeals to Rose’s taste for the dramatic flourish. It would be proof that this was all worth it in the end: the destruction of multiple universes, the death of Kanaya’s friends, the circuitous rites of suffering experienced by the nearly infinite splintered versions of every being to inhabit Paradox Space...  

Once again, the notion of a ‘redemption arc’ enters the narrative explicitly, directly echoing fandom discussion. Unlike Gamzee, this is studiously neutral on the Vriska Question: steering exactly between ‘Vriska did nothing wrong’, nor ‘Vriska is a monster’. Regardless... I think it’s probably safe to say that everyone’s prophecies are wrong and we haven’t seen the last of the ‘true’ Vriska.

chapter 9

More of Jade trying very hard to ship her friends, to the discomfort of everyone involved. Jade kisses Karkat, and Karkat explicitly names what she’s doing as sexual assault, a violation of boundaries and consent - Jade attempts to convince him that no, it was really Dave who kissed him!

This prompts a long monologue from Dave in which it’s obvious that he has put some thought into kissing Karkat. Point seems to be: they sure are into each other but Jade’s intervention is not at all welcome. At least I hope that’s the point. I would prefer not to see Jade vindicated by the narrative.

Anyway, other things of cultural note: grub spaghetti is apparently still eaten on Earth C. I always thought it was implied that ‘grubs’ in Troll food were like, actual troll babies, but maybe they’re just ordinary (for certain values thereof...) bugs bc I don’t think Kanaya would stand for that.

chapter 10

The ‘Jane running for president’ subplot has largely disappeared, because what we’re really here for is... shipping! This time, a John/Roxy chapter. I think they call it Roxygen or something? Terezi explains the ‘pair the spares’ logic of the ship (dequirkified):

TEREZI: Um, yeah John.

TEREZI: We are not idiots. We can all do the math on this.

TEREZI:  It’s not like you were going to fuck your human mom or human sister.

TEREZI: And you are “not a homosexual,” which takes Strider dick out of the equation.

TEREZI: And Kanaya is the only girl troll left, and she lesbian married one of the two remaining eligible human females.

TEREZI: Oh and Jake is a double threat. A human dad with a human dick!

TEREZI: So by a process of elimination, of *course* you were going to “fall in love” with Roxy.

Equation of ‘dick’ with ‘male’ there terezi but whatever... (god is this fic going to get into the question of what a ‘nook’ and a ‘bulge’ is...)

Anyway, my position on this one is: Roxy/Calliope was a fine ship worth upholding, and I do not see any reason why anyone would be into John. Though I may be biased on that front.

Terezi also brings up the Calliope question. John is trepidatious on that front.

There’s an interesting line from Roxy here, when John tries to assure her she doesn’t have to wear makeup:

ROXY: john...

ROXY: do u ever think about like

ROXY: gender???

JOHN: ???

JOHN: uh. not really, i guess?

JOHN: but i don’t think girls should feel like they HAVE to wear makeup just because they’re girls.

ROXY: lol

ROXY: thats not what im getting at

JOHN: what do you mean then?

JOHN: are you, like...

ROXY: like what

This is where I’m conscious of the ‘trans character’ tag on this one.

They talk about adulthood, as a performance that they do not feel ‘ready’ for. At that point Dave shows up, clearly aflustered after Jade’s intervention:

DAVE: anyone can be a dude if they really want thats part of the beauty of living in this brand new world with none of the baggage our old world had like gender and sexuality and relationships only involving a very specific number of people

chapter 11

So yeah now to pick up the torch on Dave starting to understand he’s gay. here for this

DAVE: theres a metric fucking ton of shit about to come down on me because i dragged my heels on doing some serious self reflection

JOHN: is this just some more stuff about...

JOHN: being gay?

DAVE: maybe yeah

DAVE: ok definitely yeah

DAVE: its 110% about being gay

JOHN: i thought you’d already worked all that stuff out?

DAVE: turns out it takes a long time to figure out your sexuality after a childhood filled with repression and abuse

nice to see it named as such i guess

the dialogue in the last couple of chapters has been really good. i’m getting properly drawn into this, the characters feel extremely well-realised. threads which were long latent are finally being made explicit.

Dave is struggling with very abrupt self-realisation: he definitely has feelings for Karkat, he has complicated feelings for Jade, but the ‘simple’ solution of just entering a non-mono relationship both is not feeling ‘right’ to him. John isn’t really able to help... he’s gonna talk to Dirk.

This chapter does a lot, I really like it, but at the same time I’ve not got a tremendous amount to add to it.

chapter 12

in our latest chapter of ‘homestuck but they fuck now’, Jake and Jane did that - while up on various substances, including at least alcohol and the trickster lollipop. Jake is having second thoughts but when he tries to back out, Jane looks sad, so he decides to go for it. This can only end well.

Also damn I guess someone on the team thought ‘what would it be like to fuck while high on the trickster lollipop’ so uh, that’s a thing now.

chapter 13

Back to the Strider boys. There’s a heavy intro...

Dave and Dirk don’t talk that much about the heavy stuff. They don’t need to. Dave can hear his brother’s voice in his head.

Not, like, literally. That would be insane. But Dave knows what his bro is like. Dirk, or a version of him, instilled in Dave a way of living and thinking that would, for better or worse, persist far beyond the first thirteen years of his upbringing.

Yeah huh.

Can’t believe Rose and Kanaya have the dubious honour of being the most ‘together’ characters in this.

Anyway in this case Dave still feels like he needs to talk to Dirk - who we know has gone awol, for some mysterious reason. He meets... Gamzee, who says some religious clown stuff, and offers Dave a redemption arc (really running this joke into the ground huh), but Dave brushes him off. Then he finds a fembot that Dirk was working on, with a note.

We don’t get to read the note yet. I would guess that’s the end of epilogue 2.

Sure enough it is.

Epilogue 2, taken as a whole

I quite enjoyed this, Gamzee sections notwithstanding. The prose is tight, the dialogue is hitting its flow, and a lot of relationships that were left vague in Homestuck proper are finally being given time to develop.

Obviously it’s kind of risky bringing in explicitly sexual themes, but I think they approach them in the ‘right’ way: focusing on the emotional meaning of relationships that now might - now we’re dealing with 23-year-olds - include sex, rather than just porn lol. It does slightly strain credibility that, in all their time on Earth C, none of them have made any meaningful friendships or relationships outside the core group of 8 kids and a handful of surviving trolls, but I can also understand the desire to focus on the already-developed characters. That’s a common problem for ‘endgame’ ships: in truth dating exclusively within a tiny friendship group is probably a recipe for disaster, but in fiction it makes a work manageable.

I am enjoying just how gay Homestuck has gotten. If Homestuck is the comic for Very Online kids who were around 13 in 2009 when the comic began, it’s somewhat fitting, because our cohort has, at least to a degree, done the same thing lol. Of course, that’s shaped by my personal experience of like, transitioning and moving to a friendship group that’s like 99% trans lesbians and bi women, but I suspect statistics would bear out the idea that more and more people are comfortable identifying ourselves as not-straight in some way. I could be wrong about that though lol.

Of course, it’s too much to hope that this trend - insofar as it exists! - is like, the beginning of the end for Gender as a system of social relations, violent exploitation and coercion - especially since periods of ‘more acceptance’ often seem to precede violent repression (c.f. Weimar Germany and then, the nazis; the period just before the AIDS crisis; much earlier, the construction of colonial/modern gender in the first place on the bones of less rigid gender systems...)

Anyway, let’s see what’s happened to old Dirk. I’m still wondering who the “trans character” is going to be, and how they’re going to handle that. It’s going to be tough to match fic like @rememberwhenyoutried‘s An Earth-Shattering Confession, but we shall see.

so i just got done reading the Homestuck Candy Epilogue and here’s my thoughts about it:

firstly, i chose to read this one first because I expected it to be full of sentimental wish fulfillment nonsense that would be cute to read, and it would be a good retroactive antidote for the serious stuff I expect to be in the Meat route

to say the least it STARTED that way? but then not so much.

The relationship stuff was kinda cute, but I found it difficult to get too invested in, and a lot of the way it was done felt kinda shallow: ‘we’re gonna be so happy!!’ 

and in retrospect, the broad strokes of that particular epillogue may have been written as a kind of play on common post-ending fics; Jane running for world president, different characters getting married and settling down, political developments in the world, and so on.

Gamzee being brought back and freed was interesting, and i just realized that his pre-sober speaking quirk IS present. The religion he builds up over redemption arcs is rather meta, in that no one who requires one as such actually gETS one, exactly.

(Jade as super dommy. While I get that this is a sign that she’s going down some rough paths and its messing with their relationships, I just gotta say... YOWZA)

tbh I just get really frustrated when Homestuck gets super meta and discusses narrative as relevant to their lives as its REALLY hard for me to understand, and it can come off as kind of pretentious. Like, the story IS a narrative; trying to be clever about that is really weird, awkward to read, and its the reason we lost Terezi’s best relationship (Karezi) because Hussie wanted to subversive or whatnot.

point was, i didn’t EXPECT things to get intense and then...

Dirk’s suicide. That was honestly an EXTREMELY uncomfortable turn of events, though Dirk’s reasoning behind it is in-character. Still, that was... not comfortable and really disturbing. It IS interesting that the definition of a Just/Heroic death can vary depending on the mindset of the person in question, apparently.

Straight up, the most startling thing for me were the gradually slide of Jane from a nice enough young gal to, well, instituting increaesingly harsh restrctions against troll, and over the epilogue, escalating into open genocide. The breeding thing does make sense, as noted in-story, but Jane’s bigotry against the trolls seems to come out of nowhere, and it does serve as an example of how she slides further into evil but-

Her mannerisms? The way she talks? How she abuses Jake? She’s essentially just the Condesce at that point, while Roxy takes on attributes of Mom Lalonde.

Karkat going full Signless! hell yeah!! It’s actually a treat to see him growing progressively more outspoken about what Jane has done, until he finally goes on the warpath. He’s been too much of a passive player in the post-retcon time line, so YEEEEAH. (And apparently Meenah took Aranea’s ring! Noice.)

Im still miffed about Terezi being presumed deceased, wasting her life searching for Vriska.

the kids of the main cast being named after the dead trolls is cute enough, though Im not sure it makes sense that they take on their personalities. Could be they are genuinely new incarnations of the trolls in question.

With the ghosts coming back, its nice to see that at least SOME of the dead trolls are making a reappearance. Feferi was nice to see again.

Also, Terezi being proud of Karkat and saying she always knew he had it in him; its not much but DAMN THAT WARMS MY HEART. ; U ;

Vriska officially becoming this timelines (Vriska) is actually good to me, even though I REALLY hate post-retcon Vriska, because she acknowledges that (Vriska) was the better version and wised up, and grew as a person while she didn’t.

Aradia and Sollux! And scary Calliope, manifesting through what I assume is Jade’s body from the pre-retcon timeline. It’s good to have the psionic duo back, y’know

Roxy sincerely freaked me out during the funeral for Jade’s body, though; like... what the HELL was going on there??

i also feel like there’s bias against polyships here, based on some of the subtext regarding Dave, Jade and Karkat’s relationship, and the hints of it being better off with just Dave and Karkat.

Additionally, I feel like they keep forgetting that Gamzee is, for all intents and purposes, possessed by Caliborn and that’s why he went all bad. Plus, the fears of Alternian society being the troll default? Let’s not forget, ALTERNIA IS THE RESULT OF HEAVY INTERFERENCE IN THEIR CULTURE TO MAKE THEM AS NASTY AS POSSIBLE. Beforus is the troll default, if you CAN say ‘default’ to something as complicated as society.

I have a lot of strong feelings about poor Jake in this timeline; it feels like Jane, who is behavig much like Crockertier Jane, took her behavior towards him during the Crockertier phase to a logical conclusion, and just... oh no, save him please

that ending, WHAT THE HELL; while Jade and Dave joining the troll resistance warms my heart, apparently... Obama is a Strider? an alt version of Dirk Strider, I think???? WHAT THE HECK, this is like the complete inversion of Guy Fieri being complicit in the Condesce’s evil

I was enjoying the game really well, and I was playing on a computer with my headphones on. Turns out that some of the audio was playing out on some speakers. I learned this just as two speedrunners were going to play some other computer game next to me. I paused the game and got nervous to turn it back on, even after I turned down, turned off, and unplugged the speakers, because the monitors next to me also has speakers; bigger looking ones at that.

-I can’t describe the environment for this other than Second Life but with better bandwidth, or even just a cosplay meetup in a weird mall with a side IM.

I was a tiny Vriska. I dressed up in that myself. Everyone else was more realistically sized Homestuck Trolls, and the place was pretty well crowded.

I walked through the area after going down some escalators. I dodged bumping into everyone and when I passed by people who were trolls in a higher blood chaste than me I started to get nervous. But I kept telling myself that I was supposed to be Vriska “fuck you and your higher blood chaste” Serket.

I got to an elevator that would take me to a seating area, while I waited, I opening up the IM and read the rules and  wrote down a BUNCH of things that were a lot of @s and such:

“Hello I would like to know about @LupuDigsj @vnxnnxvv @uei0s @0s038832 @7s666c99f @lallasieis @DigDig @castelskakse @xXuuSooXx” <--- I assumed these were locations or events

“Hello I’d like to recieve the achievement for “Eaten the Weird Fruit” and “jdjdjidejii”“

were some of them.

When I got to a table and sat down, I realized some of the @s turned into hyperlinks, which meant real users, and I started getting nervous and regretting being so forward. However, one of the “owners” had come to me and told me hello, and gave me a bowl of dried numnums. One of them was a dried fruit-like chip, that tasted like a tomato and a cherry at the same time. I got the achievement for “Eating the Weird Fruit” woo.

I look over to the table next to me and it was the products from this weird subplot dream I’m not sure how to introduce. A McDonald’s like fast food restaurant was adverting Happy Meals but with...elvis hair on them. It was like a movie or a celebrity or I dunno.

Super Why had a new season reboot, where the characters were actually solving crimes and mysteries with their powers, rather than fixing old played-out fairy tales that get shoved down your throat for 10+ years. Their main antagonist was...Proto! He was an anti-hero of sorts who wanted to re-imagine the Super Why team with his “Powerful Changing Machine!” Proto was a little more stylized however, as was everyone else. They remodeled everyone to look less like 3 year olds and more like 10-13 year olds. Proto had curly hair now, and a tan compared to Super Why, but was still considered the “imposter of Super Why.”

Proto had a hand in technology, as is most supervillains tbh. He trapped the other Super Why people (idk what am I gonna call them the Super Readers after they were reimagined?) away in a room to watch him turn Super Why into a damsel in distress he can save and then marry. Super Why dodged lasers and computer screens around a large, dark circular room while Proto was in the corner laughing like a villain with a little controller or something. Oh yeah, Proto still had the accent but it was much better voiced.

Super Why was then trapped by floating ringlets and the TVs and lasers all pointed at him, surrounding him. They charged up aaaaaannnnddd

well I dunno. I woke up.

Also I remember shots of a basement, much like one I remember from an old friend of mine. Empty but full, dark but well-lit, scary but comforting. You know...weird!

I think someone was tied up in there. I dunno.
