Tower and Beast Parallels
I have ideas for other things but here I am writing about a STP speculation I have had for a few days now. The Tower and The Beast I find to be very similar to one another. Despite their very conflicting appearances, with The Tower taking the form of a powerful goddess and The Beast a shadowy, feral animal, they both convey just about the same idea. Why?
Each route, like almost every other route in the game, involves the Hero being killed by the Princess. In which you get The Tower, she suffocates you under her slight frame as described by the Narrator, and The Beast can be obtained in a few other methods albeit the primary jist of it all involves her attacking you like an animal, similar to The Witch for example.
Very different ways to go out, yes, but what unites both deaths this way in Chapter 1 involves the option to Give Up trying to kill her. You could most certainly give her everything you’ve got, yet you chose not to. After all, it's pointless to resist her and a little splinter clutched in trembling hands won’t save you from her at this rate. The idea is that by now you’ve accepted the fact that she’s too much to bear for even your hands, and if you, the only person capable of slaying her, can’t do it? The world was destined to end from the very beginning.
Voice Of the Broken and Voice Of the Hunted also share close similarities to one another. They’re both much quieter than some of the other voices while speaking softly, VOTB doing so in a more careless, almost angry tone at some points and VOTH in a skittish, nervous, whispered manner. Although, both convey hopelessness in their situation, with quotes such as “I’m not being a pessimist. I’m just being realistic.” and “You’re afraid, aren’t you? Just like us.” in these negative tones.
Quotes from both voices are also very applicable to the other’s respective Princess, especially VOTB. Dialogue such as “She probably doesn’t even need to try to overpower us.” and “We don’t feel small. We are small.” are extremely applicable to The Beast’s entirety, really. Most importantly the line “She’s so much more than us. You wouldn’t understand what it feels like to be in her presence.” because it matches almost perfectly with The Hero’s situation against The Tower at the time VOTB says this. And The Beast says to The Hero; “I’m so much more than you, and a little splinter clutched in trembling hands won’t save you from me.”
While The Beast has no physical appearance in the new demo (An old design in demo 1 exists but is safe to assume outdated) she is very monstrous, she has a paw, a talon, wings, fangs. Glowing eyes that pierce through you (Like The Tower!). That’s all that’s known about her, and if The Nightmare has proven anything, it’s that scary unknown thing = gonna kill you run away now. The devs have even joked about it lawl. With what we know about The Beast’s appearance alongside how she speaks to The Hero, she is clearly a bloodthirsty predator. Another quote from VOTB, “Please don’t. I’d rather the Princess kill us again than see how dreadful we are.”, applies here. The player and the voices are implied to be scared. The Beast fills them with dread.
At first glance, there is almost nothing to say about The Tower, and it almost stayed that way when I started writing. Her mere presentation steals the words right out of my mouth. You knew just about exactly what to expect from her the moment you stepped foot into the cabin. Her booming voice rolls up the stairs. “Is that a guest I hear? Don’t linger on the stairs. Come down and witness me.” Something that The Tower does that The Beast doesn’t is that it takes virtually nothing for her to make you see how severe your situation is. You the player are already shaking your boots (or horny) hearing her voice for the very first time. Would VOTH be put in this situation, he’d fall to his metaphorical knees just as VOTB would have. “Impatient. Or maybe eager.” describes The Tower’s tone of voice just as well as it does The Beast. “Does a cat lie to a cornered mouse to play with its freedom, or is it just acting out its nature?” She’s got you in her claws and has made you drop yours.
“The jungle is pressing in on us… hiding her from view. She could be anywhere.” the Princess is omnipresent regardless.
I’m not good at conclusion so… And them’s the facts.
