Why the Copy Machine Cassete exists, aka the Copy Machine Yaoi Debacle of 2024

I wrote a big whole post explaining the Copy Machine Yaoi and tumblr deleted it so heres a TL:DR:

There was a competition in the crowsx3 discord in late January, asking us to rate different mundane rooms in the game, with 'real life consequences'. Two of these rooms included 'First copy machine in the game' , and 'Copy machine in the meeting room'.

Enter copy machine yaoi. We began making art and writing fanfiction about the two copy machines, much to the chagrin of most of the other competition participants. It did not go unnoticed by William Pugh. He ended up removing the most popular, the first copy machine in the game from the competition, only to bring it back at the last minute, causing it to win. Once the competition was over, he left us with this:

I truly believe the cassette only exists because of the few vocal minority of us who were team copy machine yaoi. I have so much stuff saved from these 48 hours so if people are interested, lmk and I'll rewrite the long ass post that tumblr deemed too powerful and deleted. I was actually team "the small room outside 217's office" pre copy machine conversion, so i have so much propaganda i made that i could share. Feel free to share your own propaganda with me!

Last night, despite getting done with a week-long subbing stint at work and finally arriving at that sweet SWEET weekend... I lost my drawing drive. X3

So, I decided to play some Pokemon.

And I went on a Lati spree.

I brought up that Jamie knows a Latias and Latios on her blog. I've had the LatiAs in question for a few years now, but as far as the LatiOs... I had nothing to work with. XD

So, I started an Omega Ruby (accidentally started Alpha Sapphire first, thankfully realized my mistake early on) and binge played to the point that I could get the boi~

And now that I have him... I thought I'd dive into their characters and some small Lati lore!

And my current idea for how I'd draw them~

Areth and Thusa are siblings--Older sister and younger brother. I'm leaning toward having Latis be laid in twin pairs. However, due to unfortunate circumstances, these two both lost their respective twins, and they come from separate clutches.

Their parents were also lost when Thusa was young, so Areth took up the role of raising her little brother.

One day, Areth was attacked and badly wounded by Sharpedos, so her devoted little brother went to find help. That help was in the form of Jamie's eventual sister-in-law, Rose, who was in the midst of her own trainer journey through Hoenn. Rose took Areth to the Pokemon Center and provided comfort for Thusa as she recovered. Although wary of her, Areth came to trust the human and became a loyal member of her team. Thusa himself never battled, but tagged along and had a jolly old time~

In Scarlet, Areth is a good sight larger than normal, while Thusa is a little bit smaller. I was kinda hoping he'd be smaller than that, but I adore the dynamic I have going with these two! ^w^

I think it is assuredly true that people are shaped by their experiences in various ways, sometimes for the worse, and there are a shitton of horrible experiences most people go through... but there is a sort of trauma-centric conception of self that's become popular and I find it rather,,,dehumanizing?

there's two variants of it, one like that healing post where you imagine you were once good and pure and then you were hurt and now you have to fix the damage. and another where you decide that there isn't a secret healed person underneath, and, well, everything you experienced affected you, so really wounds and trained reactions are practically all you really are.

but both seem to conceptualize very low agency, where seemingly the only agent in the situation is you as The Judge And Doctor, they who is looking at the wounds and triggers and reactions and diagnosing them and deciding what to cull. in which these judgements of course are magically free of context or influence. but the core You is only capable of Reacting.

there's this quote that often goes around:

under the present brutal and primitive conditions on this planet, every person you meet should be regarded as one of the walking wounded. we have never seen a man or woman not slightly deranged by either anxiety or grief. we have never seen a totally sane human being. Robert Anton Wilson

I understand it is meant to be sympathetic. and like the implication is that you should be kind and understanding of people's shortcomings or whatever, which you should. and in some ways it may be true. but I don't know if having a concept of people that consists largely of seeing them as a vessel of pain and desperation, is very, idk. respectful.

thinking of this perspective, for instance, it feels to me to rob people, including yourself, of dignity.

and people can sit around explaining how humans actually like sunsets out of trauma, or what kinds of things should be done to people to train the correct reactions (oh, sorry, what good behaviours your therapist says you should reward), or whatever. or like maybe we should have a different abstraction of what it means to be a person.

Film Friday: Shaun of the Dead

It is somewhat of a shock to me that I haven't gotten around to covering Edgar Wright's Cornetto Trilogy, and so I am aiming to remedy this over the next couple of weeks. First up is Wright's first feature film, the ever-quotable Shaun of the Dead.

First up, I want to talk about the title a bit. There's something so effortlessly correct about the thing, how it references George Romero's genre-defining -Of The Dead film series, while also telling one of the movie's central jokes, in that putting a "normal" character who has also perhaps seen a zombie movie into the highly stylized trappings of a typical zombie movie would quite naturally lead to some laughs.

Shaun, played by the always hilarious Simon Pegg, is in a very familiar twentysomething slump. He's living with his college friends and roomates Pete and Ed, but it's hardly a tenable position as Pete's choleric temperament doesn't exactly jive with Ed's dedicated slacker vibes, and Shaun's girlfriend Liz is getting kind of tired of Ed third-wheeling all the time they spend together. It all comes to a head when Liz dumps Shaun and he, after carousing to forget his sorrows with Ed, decides to sort his life out. As fate would have it, the day after is the day the dead rise from their grave, somewhat complicating matters for everyone involved.

The central gag of Shaun of the Dead is that while what one might call the standard zombie rules are in effect (aim for the head, don't get bitten, don't call them zombies,) people, chiefly Shaun and Ed, are also aware of the genre conventions. This way, the movie pokes gentle fun of the trappings of the genre, among others with the reoccurring "we don't use the Zed-word" bit.

It's not all gags, mind. While there are plenty of scenes that rely on jokes about zombie movie logic, as well as more character-driven fare given wings by a truly magnificent cast, there's also some great zombie violence going on. Shaun and Ed dealing with two zombies in their garden at the start of the breakout is violent and hilarious, and while it is somewhat limited, Shaun discovering the fate of Pete is a surprisingly strong horror moment in an otherwise silly sequence.

I would, of course, be derelict in my duty as a zombie nerd if I didn't talk about the siege of The Winchester and all the glorious zombie violence both given and received therein. The fate of David is a glorious bit of gore, and a fun reference to Day of the Dead if memory serves. Then there's the light gun rifle shooting business which is admittedly a bit sillier than the high drama of the scene perhaps calls for, although it works as a thematic thing as well as being a good further raising of the stakes.

I have, however, gone long enough talking about just the fun bits. One of the greatest strengths of Shaun of the Dead, in my mind, is its beating heart, its sense of empathy and warmth. All this clowning on zombie tropes could easily turn out crass and irony-poisoned, but this movie doesn't. In part, I suspect, because it was made out of genuine love for zombie movies, and in part because Shaun and Ed's bromance truly is one for the books.

Usually I don't love the term bromance because I feel it kinda skirts the line of being an early aughts "haha gay"-joke. In this case, though, and in fact in most cases where Pegg and Ed's actor Nick Frost shares the screen, it's hard to describe it as anything else. The two have such effortless and intertwined chemistry on screen that watching them have a good time is infectious and watching them have a bad time is captivating. While there are many strong emotional moments in Shaun of the Dead, surprisingly many for being a comedy, none hit harder than Shaun having to say goodbye to Ed, who has decided to stay behind to ensure his zombie infection doesn't hurt his friend... or his friend's girlfriend I guess. It's a moment of genuine tender masculinity, or as close to one as you could do in a movie in the early 2000's at any rate. The fact that the scene pivots on a callback fart joke doesn't make it any less of a tear jerker.

The challenging thing about writing about Shaun of the Dead, I feel, is that there's so much to talk about. From the zombie movie angle, this was the best of it's kind made between 1985 and 2007, jokes and all. From the comedy angle, there's so many wonderful bits, one personal favorite is Shaun's ragtag party of zombie survivors encountering a gender-swapped version of themselves led by Shaun's Ex going the other way. Then there's the heart, the Shaun and Ed business is one thing, and the resolution about the subplot about Shaun's disapproving (?) step-dad, played expertly by Bill Nighy is surprisingly powerful stuff. So, to try to close this thing before I write myself into a migraine, I'd say go check Shaun of The Dead out if you haven't already. It's a banger.

Name: Yoruhana Kazama

Gender: Nonbinary

General Appearance: Standing at a nice even 5'12", Yoruhana for the most part stands heads over their peers and one of their parents. A head full of dark brown hair (almost black), often carefully styled to look like a spiky mess and somewhat muscular as a result of their training with one of their fathers. Their eyes are brown and their skin is also olive toned. If one were to get a good look at them next to their parents, you could almost pick out which of their features came from who, almost to an eerie degree. They're often seen wearing casual clothing most of the time, such as a white tank top, jeans, and light reddish-orange fabric wrapped around their hands and upper arms. It's their go to outfit that they usually don't change out of even after training.

Personality: Surprisingly mellow most of the time! They're more keen to go with the flow and see where things take them. Don't let their laidback nature fool you however, even they have their limits and will snap when pushed too far.

Special Talents: They've gotten the advanced strength from both their parents. And well, the ability to shoot lasers out of their eyes. (And surprise! Devil Gene on top of that!)

Who they like better: They'd rather not play favorites if they could help it but admittedly, they do like Lambda just a tiny bit more.

Who they take after more: Jin. Although swap his stoicism for something a tad more softer.

Personal Head canon: They're something of a delinquent themself! Admittedly, a rather lax delinquent but one nonetheless. They tend to get away with skipping classes most of the time by putting on the front of a hardworking student, often pretending to be busy tutoring people. Their personality helps them a ton.
