I'd been meaning to write this conversation that happened off-screen between two of my dnd characters (Rook and Val, my temporary character when he got kidnapped) for months, and I finally got around to it tonight. So here, have my favorite part:
“You asked to see me?” Rook said nothing. His eyes, no longer clouded with fever, scanned Val’s face as though trying to place it in his memory. Realizing he probably had no memory of the day before, or their role in his rescue, Val added, “I’m Captain Kyron Valris. You’re on my ship, the Devil’s Scorn.” Rook’s eyes brightened and wincing, he pushed himself into a sitting position. “Captain. I take it I have you to thank for my rescue.” His voice was incredibly hoarse, and Val briefly wondered if it was from screaming or lack of water. Knowing Wolf, probably both. They shook their head. “Not at all. It’s your friends you have to thank.” Rook frowned, seemingly uncomprehending. Val grabbed the chair from their desk and dragged it so it was facing the bed. “Yes, I took this job, but I wouldn’t have done it if your friends hadn’t come looking for you. They must love you very very much to go up against Wolf for you. Especially given the fulos’ history with her.” Rook’s eyes narrowed slightly. “What do you think you know about my friends?” “I know they were so damn desperate to save you that they would betray someone who they called family. Speaking from experience, I know that’s not easy. Not to mention that Wolf is the most powerful captain around.” Val smiled. “You should have seen Dr. Orchid in particular. I thought he was going to dive right off the side and swim to you.” Rook froze, mouth open. “R-really?” Val nodded. “And on the ship, all of them would have fought her crew empty-handed if they had to.” “I… I didn’t know that.” His shoulders slumped and he looked down, away from Val. “I figured you didn’t. That’s not the kind of thing people usually say themselves.” After a moment of silence they continued, “And you must love them very much. I hear one of the first things out of your mouth when you woke up was asking if anyone got hurt.” They let out a short laugh. “Here you are, only a few hours out from the edge of the grave, and all you can think about is your friends.” There was a long silence before Rook said, “I do… I’d do anything for them.” Val hummed thoughtfully. “Maybe what you should be doing for them is keeping yourself safe.” Rook looked up, eyes wide. “I don’t mean to be harsh, but from what I heard they were trying to protect you, and you left them.”
and then the last few lines of the piece:
Val got to their feet and returned the chair to its position by the desk. “I think that’s enough for one day. I’ll send Dr. Orchid back in.” They moved towards the door, but paused, hand on the knob and turned back to look at the young man on the bed. “You’d make a good captain someday, Rook.” His jaw dropped open in surprise as Val turned away and stepped out onto the deck.
Val is out here dropping truth bombs, and my boy might be finally ready to hear them.
