Ace Attorney AU August oops-august-has-been-over-for-a-week Update!!
Hiiiii well okay first and most importantly of all! Happy investigations collection day everyone!!!! My copy is supposed to arrive by 10pm although I'm not sure I'll be playing it right away, but, hey, once it arrives I'll have in my possession at least one physical copy of every game in the series (2 for aai1, woohoo)!!! *Coughs* uh except all of the OG Trilogy which instead I own like 2 times over digitally (3 in T&T's case, thanks Wii) lmao. Ah well.
NOW the actual post. Yeah it's not August anymore but I've been recuperating or w/e so shhh, better late than never!
Overall I wrote over 50k words (actually in August itself) and posted 5 fics (with many more in progress), which is honestly just, wild???? That is so cool. Apparently the way to overcome writer's block is just overcommit to a month-long prompt list, who knew!
Here is my post about the first 17 days/AUs! And over here's my Ao3 series for these! Below the cut I'll wrap up the last 14 days of AUs, some thoughts, etc!
I am setting the goal for myself to actually finish writing these before the end of the year even if they're not technically "AU-gust" qualified anymore by the time I get to them sooo ...wish me luck!! In the meantime I am proud of myself for (tbh completely unnecessarily and to my detriment lmao) coming up with actually a full 31 solid AUs based on the prompts that I feel inspired by.
This post is gonna be a bit more rambly than the last one because I definitely did more of my writing last month the first 2 weeks rather than the last 2, but nevertheless--
Onto the remaining AUs!
18 - Space Travel
So, I actually started a draft at the airport before my vacation where I got wayyyy too sidetracked getting detailed about this one and thus ended up not being able to finish the post before takeoff lmao. I'm not sure whether it's annoying or interesting to include all of that here, but it's my post so fuck it, here's August 21st patt to tell you aaall about it so I don't have to: The Martian AU (I've only seen the movie and not read the book but i *did* literally just re-watch it because this thought crossed my mind lol. (Hello! It's future me popping in to say: fun fact, rewatching this movie literally ended up being the reason I knew a bar trivia answer last week lmao. Huzzah for the powers of Ace Attorney refreshing my movie quote knowledge.) Be glad this one occurred to me because my first inclination was to lean into the dark past of my vld phase (I'm super joking I had a lot of fun with it before the last few seasons haha sorry idk what to tell you friends) and see how much I'd retained if i tried to make that work but the martian sounded more fun in the end). Apparently my Thing⢠is a) poisoning Phoenix and b) putting Apollo in an insane situation in which he's completely on his own--which all things considered is probably far meaner lol. I think Phoenix is to blame for creating his own problem here for choosing to eat the stupid necklace but I fully blame Capcom for all the BS Apollo has gone through after AA4 (bc...the stuff IN that game is. coincidentally also Phoenix's blame to claim. lol). That said I'm part of the problem teehee. Apollo can be Some Guy from the real world who gets isekai'ed and he can also be Mark Watney :P (sorry bud I love you but you have just the Worst case of unavoidable main character syndrome). ((Which is QUITE funny actually because I'll never get over Capcom calling 4,5,6 the """"Apollo Justice Trilogy"""" (it's really not and it's frankly insulting they're trying to say it is.) Like he's. Yâknow. The main character in exactly one of those games...... so.)) What was I talking about? Lmao oh yeah so Apollo is left on Mars (not sure he actually has much in the way of Botanist⢠vibes but the indomitable, never-say-die, highly sarcastic vibes.... ye haha that's my boy right there). Omg wait sorry I'm writing this and realizing this whole thing actually fits the 18th AND yesterday's (the 20th) prompt as well. Whoops.
Clay as the captain (let him do something, says I)
Trucy as I think the pilot ONLY because I am literally constantly on the lookout to make a Wright Flying Brothers joke, sorry
Klavier aaaas. Uh. So the German astronaut in the film is the chemist and navigator and I know Klav's not necessarily supposed to be actually German canonically but there IS something funny about it
Athena as the flight surgeon and EVA specialist (for a couple reasons but mostly so she can be a doctor lol. I imagine she also can be there for psych stuff too, like, it's a long ass space voyage, that does shit to your brain)
Kay as the SysOp and reactor tech, tbh mostly because for some reason i really have a thing for hacker/programmer Kay, i guess?
Ema I want to be there also lol so that would be exceeding the actual number of OG astronauts but eh it's my AU. The rest of these I'm just directly comparing to a crew member from the martian but I think some of the titles and tasks could be redistributed a little to allow an extra person as a treat for me.
Originally i kind of wanted Sebastian (....SIGH. or...Eustace. (I fear even though it's AAIC release day today, I truly may die on this hill forever, falling on my sword of devotion and gratitude to the fan translation team... That said, while I think Eustace is, like, a Deeply Fine name, I have to say that Excelsius is a fucking knockout name lmfao, that one took me out. Anyway, ahem: "I wanted Seb/Eustace...")) to be there too but I think that's getting into too many cooks territory just specifically bc I'd have too many voices to play with lmfao. So instead I think he's the operator who works the satellite and realizes Apollo is alive, I think he'd fit that well. NOT THAT that needs to be. Included. In the AU. I have...so much self control.
Anyway I have too many thoughts about it, it's a problem, ironically I think I would prefer to focus on the crew and not Apollo himself, so that would at least make it more than just a rehashing of the movie/book. (Or, the movie at least. Does the book spend more time with them? I should read the book.) ...I did, Of Course, also came up with a funny, pseudo-future-science-y way to do a Sibling Reveal in this one, so there's that, too, haha. OKAY AND, SCENE. Snatching my mic back from myself. I'm actually so devoted to the Martian AU now hahaha, I really didn't think I'd let that happen to myself but here we are... You'll see in a bit, but I for-better-or-worse do truly have an extended universe going on for it now, eheh... (Help.)
19 - Spies
Franmaya?? Franziska POV??? Here's the deal: I cannot BELIEVE I got this many days into the month and STILL hadn't come up with a franmaya-centric AU, it's terrible. Also I need a Maya POV if I want to hit my self-set, self-indulgent goal of having POV of every "main" character I can (did I exactly accomplish this no but that's perfectly fine obviously haha it was just a side achievement I had my eye on). So to that end, I ended up with something here that I'm not COMPLETELY sure I won't end up changing when I sit down to actually work on it, but in short: semi The Princess Bride vibes but with spies instead of pirates! Or uh! So um okay full disclosure lol I got all excited about an AU of this kind and then like an hour into daydreaming it into existence I realized I was heavily relying on / leaning into ASSASSIN territory rather than SPY. Which are notably different things. (Wait lol should I blame Spy x Family?? Totally Endo-sensei's fault and not at all mine, boom, take that.) ...And not to go even harder into sxf territory, whoops, but my idea was something along the lines of like, since Kurain School Channeling changes spirit mediums' appearance entirely, I was going to have Maya be something of an expert in disguise, and Franziska I was almost more or less going to let retain her actual position of international prosecutor with Interpol, although perhaps I'd lean more into a James Bond-esque intelligence agency sort of thing than what we see them do in-game, I'm not sure. Maya gets "killed" for real in 2-4 except she actually just becomes an international assassin(?) apprentice. Does this make sense? Probably not lol. But is it a little funny and a little sad? Yes, yes it is, and that's always my sweet spot as a writer. The only problem with this premise is I can't stop myself from considering what Phoenix would do / be doing in the background, because the problem with Maya "dying"-only-being-secretly-alive leaves at least twofold problems in justifying why Nick hasn't gone full conspiracy theory board stop-at-nothing-to-find-her, in that a) If she's not dead, Pearl can't channel her, and knowing Pearl I have to imagine that would be her first move to try tbh, and b) even if that weren't an issue, if the police were never able to track down Maya's body at all, I fully believe Nick would still throw himself at the problem until he's able to find answers irregardless, so. This ain't about him though!! So we'll just all have to deal with knowing he's taking reaaally really bad care of himself while he single-mindedly tries to figure out what's going on ahaha...ha. He's most absolutely the drowning child in the facebook post meme. Don't worry about him.
20 - Crossover/Fusion
Soooo. Okay. First may I say, I'm not the most crossover-fic-y person in the world neither as a reader nor writer. HOWEVER. Unfortunately. My one undying weakness has proven to be Ace Attorney x Legally Blonde (and more specifically Legally Blonde the Musical, the best version, though I do love Reese Witherspoon's performance ofc it's iconic but the musical is just MWAH ugh. One of my all-time favorite musicals and definitely the one I've listened to the most esp the past couple years hahaha.) The problem is, I've joked about so many slight variations / one very Long Intensive specific AA/LBtM crossover AU ideas, that trying to limit myself to a one-shot I could conceivably finish within a day proved too much for my decision paralysis and I didn't end up writing any of them lmao. Alas. Mostly, I just think it would be funny to see the characters interact in something of a vacuum just for fun, the problem is just that I happen to be uniquely terrible at not thinking through a Crack AU until I can, ahem, "crack" it, so to speak, to make it actually justifiably function. So in theory all I want to write for this day is some combination of like, Elle and Phoenix interacting and Miles and Emmett interacting, or the four of them having a conversation that goes something like "omg wait me too!! i also went from a creative undergrad degree directly into law to chase after some guy!! what are the odds teehee" while Emmett and Miles watch in horror, and also alternatively Emmett and Phoenix mostly bemusedly watching Elle and Miles geek out over like, fancy ass high class (pink) clothing like "uh yeah i have no idea what any of those words mean. she bought me this suit and i honestly wouldn't even be able to find the store again. oh no way he bought you yours too?? man, wild." Etc. (If anyone's interested in really watching me suffer and spiral: my longer and more intensive idea for an AU with them is to have them be tackling parallel cases where either of them (Elle and Phoenix) has specific knowledge that is helpful to defending the others' client, and they get like place-swapped through dimensional shenanigans somehow also related to the cases. And Phoenix has to abide by, like, nominally-accurate US trial law (I know he wouldn't really be licensed shhhh) -- by which I mean Emmett is sitting as his co-council and exercising the most restraint possible to keep from bashing his head into the table every two seconds. And Elle has to abide by guilty-until-proven-innocent Japanifornia trial law ("wait WHAT omg what do you MEAN the prosecution can just, like, not submit their evidence before the trial???? wait what do you MEAN we should just TAKE THAT that is EVIDENCE AT A CRIME SCENE--"). On the bright side, Elle gets to experience being one of the most normally-dressed people in a courtroom and not at all being looked down upon for her general vibes and wardrobe (like tell me she wouldn't fit right in in the ace attorney universe and seem completely ordinary), and Phoenix gets to experience a real jury (take that jurist system trial that Capcom would like to never ever talk about again) and also the judge going "so, Prospective Juror No. 103, do you understand that the defense in this criminal trial does not need to say a single word in order to be doing their job? the burden of proof lies entirely on the prosecution the entire time and the defense and defendant could choose to remain silent every day of trial and that would be completely within their rights, do you understand that? are you okay with that?" etc etc, shout out to my jury service a couple month ago and the kinds of questions a real life California judge asks jurors that would seriously blow the minds of every single character in Ace Attorney lmfao can you imagine? Anyway.) So yeah idk. Also something something, spirit mediums and the whole Greek Chorus bit from the musical... "School Spirit"... much to think about in crack AU land hahaha.)
21 - Absurd Tragedy
To be honest with you, this is the entire series lmao, so much so that I had trouble even thinking of an AU to be "alternate" in any way here, hahaha. What I sort-of landed on and have vague outline notes about in my doc is (not to make another excellent-musical-adaptation-of-an-already-top-tier-movie-which-is-itself-a-highly-unfaithful-adaptation-of-a-fairly-obscure-book reference) a Shrek the Musical "I Think I Got You Beat"-style debate about whose canonical absurd tragic circumstances are the worst, lmfao. Granted, this then turned into a "wait what if I use said argument as an absurd way in which to make Apollo and Trucy have a siblings realization completely on their own, which both compounds the fact they've both already lived such tragedy to begin with but also could touch on Phoenix knowing about it and not telling them about it", and uhhhhh lmfao a debate specifically between them is OBVIOUSLY not the romantic flirting banter of the song between Shrek and Fiona lmfao but like still, the general premise, just in a sibling bickering coat of paint instead. Also was toying with it being an Athena POV just to sell home / for the additional absurdity of the experience of "you've gone over to your friend's house to hang out and suddenly they're obnoxiously arguing with their sibling and their parents are nowhere to be seen and you're not exactly sure what you're supposed to do with yourself except awkwardly wait for them to be done" lmfao. Which I've most absolutely experienced from both ends multiple times hahaha. The alternative option for this prompt is just for me to write an excessively long essay debating and attempting to personally rank the main cast's level of absurd tragedy compared to each other, lol.
22 - Orphan
I wrote 324 words (slash one physical lined page in my actual notebook) of this while I was on vacation, lol. AU where Miles invites Phoenix to go watch one of Gregory's trials (or Phoenix invites himself, or Gregory invites him while Miles tries to hold the landline phone away from him, lol) and I mean of course the trial he goes to is The Trial (like, Jeffre... AW CRAP wait I don't actually know what Jeff Master's or Kate Hall's official names are lmfao uhhh. Well you know what don't worry about that. Happy AAIC day once again..? Lol. Anyway, the concluding day of Gregory's last trial, obviously, ignore the defendant's name.) Like, basically, here's my thought. AU where Phoenix is also there, and not only does that mean he knows what happened to Miles and Gregory but also, like, it's Phoenix. Tell me even at 9 he wouldn't be insisting on taking care of the poor kid who just lost everything and has nowhere in the world to go. Tell me he's not like, begging his parents they need to help him, lol. I think really this is just sort of an AU to explore one of my several personal headcanons for what Phoenix's parents are like, because I've spent a lot of time on a different version of them (coughs for the last AU on this list...coughs) but I also have a version of them which I find fun / funny where they're like, kinda hippy-dippy and like very hands-off (tbh almost all of my hc's about the Greater Wrights is they're very hands off, just in different ways) but in more of a "we want our child to experience the beauty and wonder of the world on his own time and not influence him or set rigid standards to conform to" kind of philosophy. Anyway my point is they like adopt/foster Miles somehow before Manfred can actually get his hands on him (he's still too busy dealing with the fresh bullet wound I guess?) This is just a gen au of course, not only because they're 9 lol but also the logistics of being adoptive/foster siblings gets weird quick lmao, but mostly I just find it interesting to think about what might have happened if Miles was in an environment where people paid more attention and cared more (and weren't explicitly influencing and manipulating him to exasperate the problem on purpose), because I have to imagine examining his nightmares a little more closely a little more quickly might have led someone (say, Phoenix who was also there in this AU) to find something slightly off about it or like start putting pieces together quicker, idk. I, uh, I'm not gonna lie to you, I don't actually remember how I intended to end this one hahaha ;; I started it but I was on vacation and neglected to outline / summarize the rest of my ideas the day of, so I guess I'll just have to see where my mind takes me when I get back to it.
23 - Musician
So my FIRST thought for this day was to use it as an excuse to finish my First Ever Ace Attorney Fic, which has been in WIP stasis for...uh.... 6. Years. i--SIX????? Shit. lmfao. yeah uh. I guess I created the first version of the doc (on my OneNote, god) back in 2018. So. Yeah. Hm. Omfg. This fic has partially existed since before Phoenix Disbarment Day. That is so. Wow. Damn. Y'all we're so close to aa4 time (2026) what the hell??? Ahem. Pianist Phoenix. That's. My point lmao. I know the original thing that sparked me loving this concept was actually some tumblr post I saw apparently a LONG long time ago, hahaha, and I know there's no way I'll find it with tumblr's abysmal search function, but just know it was not a completely original idea of mine when I say i fucking LOVE the headcanon that, you know what actually Phoenix CAN play the piano, he just chooses to do it as shittily as possible because that's kind of what he's like post-disbarment and he'd absolutely get a kick out of fucking with people like that even if they have no way to know they're being fucked with. It's like, he's no virtuoso or anything, but he can passably play the piano! He's just being an ass on purpose! It kills me every time lol. I won't say I think that's necessarily true in canon so ofc it's not like an end-all-be-all hc for me or anything but it's just sooooo funny to me that I like to break it out any time I possibly can. Look me in the eyes and tell me he wouldn't. Honestly, look me in the eyes and tell me if he actually put his mind to it in any meaningful way he wouldn't be able to get decent quickly regardless, considering the fact he became an accomplished lawyer on more-or-less a total whim. This to say: that was my intention, to finish this fic I've had brewing that was about Phoenix actually being able to play the piano and hiding it for a really long time but eventually being found out by Miles by chance. Except then I sat down on the plane and started writing a Pearl POV instead? In which she finds out about more or less the same exact concept but from Iris--also by chance, but less actually catching him playing and more being asked, "Oh, does he still play? He was always good at that." And then bc it's Pearl (Pearl I love you), of COURSE she goes and confronts him about it. Pearl might be the single most confrontational character in these games tbh which is SO FUNNY to me. Like I'm kind of exaggerating obviously but also am I? I know she has psyche-locks you have to break through multiple times throughout the series but stiiiill. Everyone else is so repressed and weird about anything remotely vulnerable, I stg. Props to Maya for making sure Pearl turned out pretty okay I guess, lmao. Anyhow yeah that's sort of the AU I ended up with. Pearl POV where she and Iris know they're sisters (don't get me started on this I have so many thoughts about the amount of information I'm positive Maya and Pearl are NEVER given skjflj) and Pearl visits Iris in prison regularly and on one such visit maybe she mentions Nick's job at Borscht and Iris makes a totally innocuous comment to the effect that Pearl learns he actually knows how to play the piano and she goes to get mad at him about it because he's definitely been pretending he can't and Pearl's pretty sure he's told neither Maya nor Trucy the truth and that cannot be left to stand.
24 - Pretend Hate
Okay, this exists in a similar realm to the Orphan prompt, except instead of Phoenix being there for the trial or the Wrights taking Miles in before Manfred can, it's more just AU where Miles doesn't actually cut all contact and he and Phoenix successfully end up exchanging correspondence (in semi-secret) during the time they're separated (i.e. they remain friends and close during the 15 years they're separated in canon). "Semi-secret" because they--esp Miles--somehow hide who exactly it is they're talking / writing to all the time but don't necessarily hide the fact they are doing that. Like, a fake cultural / language exchange program or something? I feel like there could be a world where Manfred really doesn't give a shit what Miles is up to as long as he's being molded into "someone Gregory Edgeworth would hate" (I don't think he would lol but that's another AU) and becoming a model von Karma protege prosecutor and such. He obviously goes to lengths to cut Miles off from everything he's familiar with in that he takes him to Germany, but I've always thought it's way more on Miles feeling guilty and blaming himself and thinking he's unworthy / pushing people away being the reason why they never talked before aa1 despite Phoenix's "attempts to contact him," whatever those may be specifically. And, yeah, I've watched that one episode of the anime but tbh I don't really use anime canon for almost anything besides maybe some of the fun visuals, haha, so I'm kind of disregarding that anyway. ANYWAY. My point is. The "pretend hate" part is that--sometime over the course of exchanging correspondence, Phoenix starts thinking something's weird and gets it in his head to "investigate" himself, since he's still in LA / has access to the scene of the crime and stuff, and then as a combo of him just plugging away at it until he has enough (circumstantial) evidence to be like "Miles I think you're wrong about this" and also a younger, slightly less repressed, slightly less in Manfred's pocket Miles actually being somehow willing to consider alternatives a little--they're able to put their heads together and eventually come to the (correct) conclusion ahead of time, before the 15-year statute of limitations, that it was almost certainly Manfred who did it. And then they work together to figure out how they can possibly PROVE that but they haven't thought of anything foolproof by the time aa1 events start rolling around (or at the very least, the 5-years-ago sections of aa3? It might make more sense if it's as soon as Miles returns to Japanifornia, and also I think Phoenix has way less reason to fall for Dahlia/Iris so hard if Miles is around and *coughs* available lmfao. Anyhow). So, in the hopes it'll keep Manfred from getting suspicious of Miles, they publicly pretend to hate each other, putting on a show of more of the canon attitude Miles esp. has before 1-4, but behind the scenes they're actually working together trying to think of a way they can definitely get a conviction to stick that Manfred won't be able to worm out of. And that's the AU! Idk, in terms of additional thoughts, I couldn't decide what to do / what would happen to Mia in this AU either, which doesn't super matter but did give me pause. So she might live, idk, depends the exact timeline. I do also think a scene where--Dahlia still hits on Phoenix in the reading room/courthouse library but he's like, actively there waiting for one of Miles' trials to conclude for a covert meeting, so when Miles gets there and is like "What are you messing with over there?" Phoenix is like "Oh, hey, check out this weird bottle some girl just gave me because apparently she fell in love at first sight, haha, isn't that so funny--" and then Miles recognizes it from the Fawles trial and they catch Dahlia earlier or something, idk. Or alternatively Phoenix was AT that trial so HE recognizes it. Or maybe it's funniest if he was there but doesn't recognize it until Miles does lmao, this is not the point of this AU but I can't stop myself from considering this part of it.
25 - Scientists
So THIS is the day I sort of alluded to earlier, many many words of post ago, where I got so invested in my The Martian AU that I started accidentally worldbuilding about it. What I've started and have about 400 words of (slash one notebook page, again from the plane after my vacation), is like, AU where it's NASA instead of law and I can make Phoenix go "What, like it's hard?" only it's about literally rocket science this time hahaha. Basically for this fic I just thought, well what if Phoenix just shows up as a flight tech or engineer or something (idk I don't really know that much about real life astronautics) as Miles is preparing for some space mission or something and he's just like WHAT are YOU doing HERE. I know I know I made Apollo literally be the titular martian and yes he ALSO has a (or tbh probably has a WORSE) canonical debilitating fear of heights, so, shhh, but I do like the idea that Phoenix is like, oh, who, me? In the flying metal death trap? No fucking thank you, I will be down here watching and talking directly to you through a headset or something. You cannot escape me however i can at least escape the building I'm in. No interest in seeing the Earth from above, thanks. Actually iirc Miles also doesn't love heights but meh whatever I'm fairly certain Phoenix talks about it the earliest in the series so there you go. Anyway, this would all be a mission prior to whatever mission it is that Apollo & Co. go on to Mars for the first part of the AU, so I guess you could consider it a prequel? And probably a fairly shippy one. I have other reasons for which it's fun for me if wrightworth is at least together if not outright married before the events of the "The Martian" part of the AU, so this one would be, like, about how exactly that went down.
26 - Victorian Era
Okay, once again, this just. IS. Literally. Dai Gyakuten Saiban / The Great Ace Attorney. Lol. That said, I've always loved the fanart I've seen of like Ryuunosuke and Phoenix (and respective Co.'s) interacting, or like, one or the other ending up in the other time period somehow, so I thought it'd probably be fun to try my hat at that. I feel like I've neglected the tgaa characters anyway, considering I actually somehow managed to reference PLvPW already, which is obviously significantly more of a spinoff and also just largely non-canonical, lmao. Also tgaa is just SO GOOD, augh. I'd love to have the multi-witness cross examinations from both of those games back sometime again, and I had so much fun with the jury in tgaa too, excellent mechanic. What was I talking about? So, I never completely decided on a concrete direction to take this, but even before AU-gust had started I'd already been toying with the idea of an AU where maybe Maya or Pearl channels a character from tgaa specifically because some documentary or special or something comes out talking about the real-life Herlock Sholmes (as opposed to the Totally Fictional "Sherlock Holmes" who Phoenix references in that one trilogy line, because I really think that's the funniest possible explanation for the discrepancy) and they're arguing over how that cannot possibly be a real person and no one was named that and etc etc and then to prove once and for all one way or the other Hurley is channeled and also for bonus joke content "recognizes" Phoenix at first (idk pretend his eyesight got worse in his older age, I know Phoenix and Ryuunosuke look, tbh, less alike than Ryuu and Apollo do, lmao, but again that's another AU) and then I get to play with Phoenix's mom's maiden name is Naruhodou and his middle name is Ryuuichi or such to that effect, because that is also a favorite headcanon of mine (not in small part because I can project my own life onto him by making him half-Japanese from SoCal, lol). So that's an idea I'd had that was already decently fleshed out and the ONLY problem is that if I'm having characters actually be channeled then there's a very real limiting factor of how many spirit mediums exist, and also that means Maya and/or Pearl don't get to interact with them, which for the sake of not overwriting would be good but for the sake of my love of a chaotic group conversation would be bad. But, uh, hopefully I do manage to hold myself to a less broad cast of characters, ideally, instead of bringing a bunch of them over to the other time period to see how they'd deal with that and interact en masse. Ha. Haha.
27. Younger / De-Aged
So here's another AU I'd already had idle thoughts about before AU-gust had even started! I...will get into this later, TRUST I will, lmfao, but I do have an extremely involved AU already in which Time Travel of the "regression" type is involved, i.e., they have their memories of the "future" but are thrown back into the past including their own younger bodies however-many-years-ago. So I've got that type of thing covered, I promise I do, haha. And additionally, I've actually already written them "younger" for my colorless AU way back on day 2, so I did think perhaps I'd just continue that one and say it was for this prompt (a smart person thing to do. this is the objectively correct option). On the other hand. I find pre-DL6 Phoenix and Miles reacting to how their lives actually turned out in the end HILARIOUS. Tell me it's not funny. And tell me it's not, like, some sort of depressing-yet-ultimately-hopeful for the older/current them to look at their child selves and be like Kid, Oh, You're Going To Go Through Some Shit, but also reflect on how they did make it and things turned out okay and life goes on etc etc. My problem with this kind of thing is that it's hard to come up with a justification for and that's not a problem in itself but it is a problem in me not knowing how i'm going to end a fic, which often gets me decision-paralysis-ed into not being able to start it in the first place, which did in fact happen to me here, haha. I think ideally I'd just do a quick "wait, was that a dream?" kind of thing where they (Miles and Nick) have a short conversation with themselves, but... Uh-oh, what, did you think that was all I had? You clearly don't know me at all. OTHER au option where young Phoenix is in the future/present and rather than himself and Miles it's the Wright Anything Agency who like, idk, find him roaming the streets of LA (fun fact! I actually came up with this AU one day while I was quite literally roaming the streets of LA myself at like 3am-ish. Do with that what you will). He is of course wearing a hat or beanie or something at first because come on, that's way more fun, and no matter how much Trucy, Apollo, and Athena are like "hm idk something about this kid seems familiar" I just don't think my first thought upon seeing some vaguely familiar kid alone on the street would be, like, "Oh, that's obviously a child version of my father/coworker/boss!" So. I'm not really sure that one has an end point either, though, so the same problem still stands, haha. The bad, someone get a spray bottle to spritz me, option of this is, obviously, to combine the two, so it's like the WAA find him first and then are like UHHHHH we need an adult (never mind actual adult-age-ness between them) and somehow end up getting Miles there too, but idk. I... should not. Overcomplicate. I shouldn't. Even, even if...august is over...so theoretically there's no longer any sort of On-Time component since it's late either way........ definitely not.
28 - Caretaker
Here are my exact notes / entire doc for this day. Ahem. And I quote: i brought up the lighthouse keeper thing but i dont know where that would be going exactly maybe this is a thing i could do franmaya for??? since i still havent gotten there? actually lol that as a lighthouse thing is funny. ghost romance? my three tropes rattle End quote. Anyway, shout-out to my friend hailstorm for being the one there to brainstorm "lighthouse keeper" with at the self-same bar trivia that I mentioned previously, lmao. I actually think that was even the same exact day as the The Martian quote was a relevant answer to a question. So yeah, even though I already kind of have franmaya planned for the spies day, that's both kind of sort of a darker AU overall and--WELP well, okay, so, i do, you know, recognize maybe a ghost romance isn't, uh, necessarily the fluffiest kind of AU lmao. Don't mind that. My point is, I love the vibes of a lighthouse keeper AU, and I generally like ghost romance as a trope, so that does feel like a viable option. Honestly, I kind of separately wanted an excuse to practice writing miego also, so maybe the Feys are just all chillin' in this lighthouse for...Some Reason, and that's side-plot relevant somehow, idk. I know Franziska and Godot exist in the same place for a minute in 3-5, but I honestly can't really remember them interacting? I think she'd fucking HATE him though lmfao. He'd think she's funny but I actually think she'd be too reactive for his most preferred teasing/fucking-with-people dynamics, haha. Regardless, if he is there at all, it's a very minor B plot, I think, 'cause this ain't about him, lol.
29 - Forced into Hiding
Achtung, baby, 2566 words of this are written! Lol. So uh, yeah. In short, AU where Klavier gets hounded by fans on the street while he's also having just a bad personal day, and the closest and best place he can think to hide from them is at the WAA. I, um, actually hadn't realized I'd written quite this much of this, haha, it was supposed to be short and fairly silly but then it turned into Klavier having a little bit of a panic attack maybe and getting consoled by Apollo, sure, of course, but then also having to deal with and experience some amount of closure / reach some kind of understanding with the Wrights, also. It's kind of part Klav character study, kind of part complaint against freaking Capcom for neglecting him (boo, I love him, stop ignoring him, or, yknow, worse, whatever the heck turnabout academy was supposed to do for him, which honestly almost felt like a step back to be quite honest). Okay, also, taking a slightly closer look at what I've already written, the REASON I'd thought I'd written way less than this is definitely because he hasn't even GOTTEN to the Agency yet, never mind spoken with any of its members, lmao. That would do it. In any case, I like the idea of Klavier having a bit of a vulnerable moment, and I also like the idea of him and Phoenix actually, like, talking for real, instead of, once again, whatever Turnabout Academy and DD was meant to tell me, which seems to be less than nothing. I kind of like the fact that it gave him a law mentor? I mean, she was very dead, but I have a very meaningful Use for her in later-to-be-announced-AUs-I-keep-teasing, haha. I of course considered other people and times when people in AA might be forced into hiding, but this felt like a silly but also meaningful way to do that without it just being an exploration of Miles and his not-suicide note (which wasn't exactly "forced" anyhow, he did that all on his own) or like, Zak Gramarye (who also completely did that to himself but w/e). Making it about Klavier completely escapes the bounds of canon, because canon is a weenie about talking about any of his actual feelings EVER, so screw you Capcom, I'm doing it for you. Don't worry about it. Trucy commiserating with him about still Loving someone, perhaps the very closest person biologically related to you you've ever known and depended on in your life, who not only did you very big harm personally but explicitly used you in a very real and participatory way to perpetuate the harm elsewhere and all the complexities about Feelings For And About Them Therein, and Phoenix somehow having enough self-awareness to recognize that shutting down completely and isolating yourself away doesn't actually do you any good even when you're at your lowest, and recognizing that Klavier doesn't exactly have a "Trucy" to be a focal point to draw him out of that, and that therefore he needs to be a bit more open to his peers. (Insert joke about "Well, I'm really definitely not suggesting you go adopt an entire child, that's really probably, uh, not the way to go, actually, but, you know. Everyone needs people, that just makes us human." Etc.)
30 - The Beginning of the World
So, hm, as it turns out, I got extremely sidetracked this day thinking about the next day on the docket. Whoops! Unfortunately this ultimately means my ideas for this day as of now are relatively uninspired: I had the thought that I could explore the beginning of Troupe Gramarye, which is its own sort of world, or else, maybe something about the beginning of the series itself but from the somewhat unconventional POV of a one Mr. Larry Butz. Yes, that's a bit self-serving in that it lends toward trying to complete a list of "main, recurring characters' POVs" that I've had as a sidequest all month, but, still. That said, just exploring actual canon through Larry's POV isn't exactly what I'd classify as an "AU" necessarily, so I feel like something would need to be different here. Okay, wait--not to draw inspiration a dang week late to the party, BUT. Now that I'm typing this up, I'm thinking, okay, maybe, what if. The "Beginning" of the series, technically speaking, is basically the fact that Phoenix gets put on (class) trial for stealing Miles' lunch money--which notably only happened because Larry himself picked it up when it fell on the floor. So, perhaps, what about an AU where he doesn't do that? I mean, I guess it would just turn the entire world of AA into something of a terrible series of tragedies with no real closure about them, lol, rip, but it could possibly be interesting? I dunno! (And, yes, I know DL-6 itself is more or less the basis of the series, if we're being ticky-tacky, but Phoenix wouldn't have been involved without meeting Miles, and that somewhat necessitates the class trial, and without him none of canon would get resolved, so. I will say, I do love going back to the earliest points to see how and how much you can make canon deviate or stay the same--reasonably speaking--via minor tweaks and butterfly effect and all that, so this could be interesting, although I once again must say I think it really just means a bunch of innocent people, Miles included, are going to be put away and possibly executed over murders that weren't their faults, lol. Hm. Much to consider.)
31 - Two(+) of the Above:
Beginning of the World + Younger/De-Aged + Canon Divergence (+ Feat. Jokers: Guardian, Everybody Lives)
With all of this, the ONLY prompts I've actually missed on this list become Animagus which I swapped for the Wings joker, and the last joker of the four, Thriller, which was never exactly a priority of mine because I'm not sure I'd write that sort of thing particularly well, so! Wild! Completionists everywhere almost rejoice, haha. SOOOOO. For the eagle-eyed readers out there, I'll bet you're just dying to know what this one AU I've been teasing all post could Possibly be to warrant such a build-up, right? (...Right?) The answer is the at-ow! (Phonetically, lol. I've been calling it that instead of out loud saying all the letters in AATTAU out loud every time.) My friend Ben can attest to the fact that this behemoth AU (her word which I'm stealing) has been in the works for, uhhhh... months?
MONTHS. AHAHA. Ha. That. Sure says March! It sure does! And it is not lying. Lmfao. (Ignore the time, I was working overnight then--my beloved work schedule whomst I miss dearly--so that's a perfectly reasonable discord-ing hour for March-me.) Also, once again, I'm choosing to blame Ben for my extensive AU problems, she sent me a very cute time loop AA fic that utterly destroyed my entire mind because it got the mere idea of "Time-based AU" caught in my endless void-idea-hole. So. Here's the real rub. The literal reason I started doing this AU-gust challenge in the freaking first place was that I was absolutely Desperate to find a way to overcome my writer's block. And one of the (admittedly many) reasons I wanted to do this was because I have been ITCHING to write this stupid behemoth AU for real. I have a massive outline doc already, I have a whole slew of scenes planned, I have lots of character archage, I have sooo many things I want to say and explore about them all you have No Idea. It's extremely self-indulgent and absolutely my personal magnum opus for all my very specific favorite AA headcanons and ideas and thoughts. And obviously, it worked! I did indeed overcome my writer's block! And I had so much fun doing it!! And I'll admit, from the very beginning, I had been eyeing that "Everybody Lives" joker prompt, because...that's it! That's basically the point of the AATTAU (Ace Attorney Time Travel Alternate Universe, if that wasn't clear, haha). I don't want to let myself get TOO into it, because Oh Boy, I sure will! If you let me! Haha. But basically the premise is EXACTLY what I stated in that very first discord message I could find about it. Maybe not so much "time travel" technically speaking than it is "gaining memories of everything that happened in canon right as the DL-6 earthquake happens", so it's more regression than actual time travel since they're in their own younger bodies and everything, but still. It's basically my excuse to treat canon like it did happen and YET allow for everybody to survive and for the very fun cocktail of traumas and joys that come from remembering what happened but having the chance for something different (and all the effort that goes into making something different happen in the first place).
Now, as far as AU-gust goes. I was obviously not about to even pretend I could remotely start this during August itself or justify connecting any of it to the series and the prompts I'd already written for it, lol, but I also couldn't get the idea out of my head, so I got it in my head I really wanted to end the month with SOMETHING that somehow tied into my AATTAU, if only to motivate myself to actually get on it and start writing out instead of solely outlining everything that's been in the works all these months. So to that end, I saw the "Everybody Lives" and the "Beginning of the World" prompts, and an idea came to me. I'd been dancing around the justification aspect of this AU for most of the time I've had it because let's be honest, it's just a very self-indulgent idea and it does not NEED "justification" to serve the purpose I want it to serve and be what I want it to be. But the AU-gust prompts gave me some actual inspiration and an Idea as to a way to solidify my unnecessary "justification" but in a way that it doesn't need to be directly part of the final product of the AATTAU (like, I could make it a separate one-shot and either just link it to and from the AATTAU fic itself, or if it all ends up being a series, then I could just include it in the series but it wouldn't be necessary to read to understand what's going on. And so, I present! The Ami Fey one-shot special I came up with just to fit these prompts :3 ...And by "i present" i mean, uh, I wrote 4k words of it on the 31st and didn't even come close to what I wanted to cover, because I suck at being concise. Lmfao. (Shocker.) Basically, I used Ami Fey as a semi-self-insert kind of godlike figure to reason out a semi-plausible way to make the concept I want to explore happen, happen. And I had a lot of fun, but I do still have a bunch to finish, but either way, I'm very pleased to have a (somewhat silly but ultimately fun for me) reasoning as to the gears ticking behind the scenes of my idea! To be somewhat less vague, the whole AU is predicated on the idea that, Phoenix and/or Miles (who remember from the beginning / from December 28th, 2001) meeting the other characters at-or-after the time they originally met in canon are able to recall their memories of the "original" (i.e. canon) timeline. I've used some magatama shenanigans to have some fun with this, and I'm now using Ami Fey and magatama shenanigans to explain how and why this is A Thing, even if it isn't necessarily the objectively most logically sound argument I've ever made. It's still a good one, in my book, and more importantly I like it, so that's all that really matters.
To briefly explain the "two" (by which I mean 5?) of the "above" I'm using here:
Beginning of the World: This fic specifically would show the beginning of the "world" of this AU specifically! Woohoo! Go Ami Fey, creating a whole new set of problems for our beloved little Guys to go through, hahaha. I think I may have based her character a little too much on Maya mischievousness, but, oh well. Let's just say that's where she gets it from.
Younger/De-Aged: As I've already kind of expressed, the premise of this AU is mostly just them being their own younger selves except they also have the memories of all of canon (and maybe a year or two after the fact, I need to confirm a couple dates).
Canon Divergence: I feel like this is decently self-explanatory, but then again maybe it's a bit cheesy to include this here, since it basically diverges from nearly the first major event of canon (DL-6), but that's not the only time things go almost-canonically but diverge a bit in some way, so I think it really does fit here.
Guardian: This one is a bit multi-fold. It somewhat refers to the way I'm making Gregory Edgeworth the de facto guardian (as in, legal guardian) of mostly everyone I possibly can because I love him and he would be great at it. But also, guardian in that, Mr. Savior Complex Phoenix Wright himself has literally all of the information at his disposal to try to "save" the potential Happy Lives of literally every person he loves, and, well. He does a pretty good job about it; not without cost, haha, but I feel like I can definitely call him a "guardian" of others in this AU. And, as for specifically the one-shot Ami fic, she is essentially the guardian of the entire Fey lineage, in this AU at least, so that also totally fits and is most immediately relevant.
Everybody Lives: I think this one is pretty self-explanatory at this point, lol. But for the one-shot: Ami is essentially trying to secure an "everybody lives" scenario, even if it hasn't been achieved yet, so it's more an aspiration at that point, but ultimately it is indeed successful. Now, "living" does not mean, like, "totally healthy" (mentally or physically), so there's lots more to it, but in short, yes, they live.
And......that's basically a wrap on that!
I mean, it isn't actually at all, since I still have to finish 26/31 fics, lmfao, but as far as the idea generation stage goes, and the use of the AU-gust prompts, that's what's up in my world! Somewhere out there maybe there's an AU of my actual real life where i finished more of these on time, but i'm still pretty pumped by all the work that's already been made on making so many AA fics a reality for me. I've come a long way since starting that first AA fic in 2018...!!
I still have all the aforementioned 26 fics to finish obviously, and I also have AU continuations planned for at the very least, day 2's colorless prompt and day 3's dark academia prompt (let alone day 31's, lol, but that's its own monster entirely), but I'm optimistic!
Thankfully I actually finished using nano to word track for me before they, you know, doubled down on AI and called everyone "abelist" (???) for not supporting it, which, uh. Well. But for my own posterity and if anyone's curious, here's what my word counts looked like throughout the month of AU-gust--admittedly including some planning and outlining:
It ended up being 51,377 words total in August on these AU prompts alone!
I feel like I wanted to say something poignant and meaningful at the end here, but it's almost 9:30 and I work at 4am tomorrow, so I'm going to go ahead and wrap this post up here, haha. If you read all of this, thank you very much for joining me on my little journey!
Once again, here is the Ao3 series where I'll post anything more that gets done, so if you'd like to see how any of these AUs turn out, feel free to keep an eye on that!
And here is the previous post with the 1st half+ of the AUs if you missed it and are interested now!
My copy arrived literally as I was writing this up so I've spent the last several prompts of this post listening to the AAIC soundtrack in the music collection, and, oh man, it's seriously so surreal this exists??? I might be an old fogey who has and will for an indeterminate amount of time continue to have trouble letting go of the fan translation names I've lived with for the past decade or whatever, but it's seriously so awesome the entire series is finally available internationally!! Let's hope for my sake AA7 doesn't come out before I finish any of my AATTAU, because that would really throw a bit of a wrench in my decision-making process, lol.
Bye for now!

I am fucking ecstatic over the ace attorney announcement. its a re-release of 2 spin off games, with one of them being PORTED TO ENGLISH FOR THE FIRST TIME!!! once its released, every ace attorney game (excluding the crossovers) will have modern re-releases and be in english, so HOPEFULLY it means they're working on ace attorney 7!!!! (it's been like 9 years since a new mainline ace attorney game, and 7 years since any new game includ. spinoffs)
I am really sad about tomodachi life though, I love it and I still play it on my 3ds!! (I've had the same one since like 2015 it still works lol) I wish they'd make a new one, hopefully with gay people, more gender options and customisations, but keep the glitter room I love it
SKSKSKSK HEY YOU!! I knew you'd be ecstatic for the Ace Attorney games :3
It's SO cool that you finally get ALL the games though!! That's really exciting & I hope you eat them up!! I'm honestly kinda intrigued about Ace Attorney as a whole (I've played the first case/like half-way through the second one from the first game of the Phoniex Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy,,, so really not that much LMAO) and I kinda want to keep going but I keep forgetting :3 BUT the news about these re-releases has gotten me interested again and I may continue. Honestly I DO hope they make another new game for you guys - being a lawyer is a fun concept for a game and maaaaaybe it'll keep pushing me to get through them
...I'm so devastated about the no Tomodachi Life đ (/jk im totally fine about it I swear) - I lost my original game bc my old 2DS (yes I was one of those) broke FOREVER ago and I brought a Switch rather than another DS so I had to give my games away </3 BUT I semi-recently brought a 3DS and modded it & got Tomodachi Life back so I guess I'll keep playing that one - I'm just a LITTLE salty becuase they ported Miitopia?? (which do NOT get me wrong I LOVE that game I completed the 3DS one in like a day or 2 after I got it) and gave us SO much new customizable abilities that would be Perfect for Tomodachi Life and then they just continue to deny us :( *SIGH* Oh Well đ
(I will say it IS kinda funny that they were like "yeah we'll let you be gay in the next Tomodachi Life" and then just,,, never made one LMAO)
#i'll keep dreaming#one day...#she'll return and we Tomodachi fans will rejoice#hmiae rambles#hmiae asks#euporiez asks me#nintendo direct#tomodachi life#ace attorney#ace attorney investigations

hi could I please have a pronouns check using the name Vance ? I would like two. one with ze/hir (full set: ze/hir/hirs/hirself) and he/him being used together interchangeably and then a seperate one with just ze/hir in it.
I like art and reading books (mostly fantasy). I'm currently reading the bone season by samantha shannon. I'm also a big fan of the video game series ace attorney but I prefer watching playthroughs than actually playing the game myself :p
ty in advance :)
Sure thing!
ze/he
Wait a second, is that Vance? I think I see Vance over there! Do you see hir? Zeâs the one sitting by hirself with hir headphones on. I wonder what zeâs listening to? Anyway, youâve met Vance before, right? No? Well, youâll have to meet hir sometime; I think youâd get along nicely with hir. Iâve only spoken with hir once or twice, but ze seems pretty neat! Ze said ze likes art and reading fantasy books, so maybe you could talk with hir about one of those things sometime? Vance also mentioned that heâs currently reading The Bone Season, so Iâll have to ask him if he thinks itâs a good book or not when heâs done reading it. He also said he likes watching playthroughs of the Ace Attorney games, so maybe you two could watch some together! Oh, hey! Vance is looking this way now! I think heâs waving at us? Yeah, heâs definitely waving at us. Do you want to go meet Vance? Sure, letâs go say hi to him! Hey, Vance!

Sicktember Day 11: Beginner's Guide to Faking Sick
Fandom: Ace Attorney Characters: Larry Butz, Apollo Justice, Trucy Wright, Phoenix Wright, Miles Edgeworth Notes: Despite an ill-fitting reputation as a slacker, Larry has never faked being sick in his life. There are over a hundred good excuses out there, should he ever need one. Pretending to be sick was far too risky, anyway. However, as the time for his visit to his boyfriends grows shorter, and his boyfriendsâ work days grow longer, Larry may just have to step out of his comfort zone with help from two unlikely sources. Post-SoJ, one mention of Apolloâs whereabouts following the game, but heâs in Japanifornia focusing on the here and now, so assess how risky you personally find it if you havenât finished SoJ. You know the drill, married Wrightworth mutually dating Larry, and Trucy is in college (they grow up so fast!)
âAnother one!?âÂ
Even if the phone couldnât hear him, it felt good for Larry to shout his frustrations at his latest received texts.Â
âWhatâs up?â A muffled form of Apolloâs voice came from inside one of Trucyâs magic boxes. âIs it a good enough excuse to get out of this box?âÂ
âNo,â Larry groaned as he rested his cheek on Phoenixâs desk, âEdgey just had to call in another witness, so he and Nick are gonna be working all day again.â
âDamn, I guess youâre stuck here with us, then.â Apollo helped himself to opening the top of the box to climb out, provoking merely a look of disappointment from Trucy once she entered the office just in time to catch him in the act. âFunny how even after Iâve been gone for a while, the boss still hasnât given Athena her fair share of cases.â
âThatâs not true, Polly!â Trucy eagerly corrected him. âThis was actually Athenaâs case originally, but,â she couldnât help but giggle, âsheâs playing hooky to go on a date!âÂ
âWhat?â Apollo raised a brow. âI couldâve sworn I heard you tell everyone here that she had the flu, and in graphic detail at that.âÂ
âThatâs what I told you, yes.â Trucy blew a quick, playful raspberry. âShe needed a good excuse to take time off, so I came up with one.â
âJeez, I wish an excuse like that could be enough to get someone else to stay home,â Larry lamented, âthen the days leading up to my next book fair appearance wouldnât be so lonely.âÂ
âWho said they couldnât, Uncle Larry?â Even though Larry was now dating both of Trucyâs dads, the âUncleâ part still stuck. âWhen I got my appendix out, Daddy and Papa dropped everything just to stay with me.âÂ
âWell, yeah, theyâre your parents and you had a major surgery.â Larry countered.Â
âDidnât the boss and Mr. Edgeworth take a week off when you had the flu, Larry?â Apollo wondered aloud.Â
âYeah, but I was actually sick, and it was awful.âÂ
âWho said you have to be actually sick?âÂ
The cogs in Larryâs brain needed a moment to turn.
âOh, no! No way!â Larry refused the potential suggestion adamantly. âI have never faked sick in my entire life. It would be too risky to start now.â
âBut that would make you more believable!â Trucy insisted. âDidnât you say Papa used to get away with faking sick all the time because he was so well behaved?âÂ
âYeah, but Iâm not.âÂ
âSure you are! You have, um,â Trucy pressed a finger to her cheek, âa record of credibility! Yeah! Daddy and Papa would never suspect a thing!âÂ
âBut I donât know the first thing about faking sick!â
âPolly and I can show you the ropes!â Trucy giggled once she saw Apolloâs reaction to being volunteered. âPolly pretended to be sick so we wouldnât find out he got backstage passes toââ
âHey!â Apollo interrupted, even though it was obvious those backstage passes were a privilege earned by being the boyfriend of Klavier Gavin. It wasnât even that big of a deal, since everyone and their mother already knew that, but Apollo liked pretending his relationship was still a well-hidden secret. âIâll help, just⌠Just be quiet in exchange!â
âAlright, alright.â Trucy needed a moment to settle down. âFirst thingâs first: looking the part!âÂ
. . .
The makeup was so itchy.Â
Sure, it helped Larry look like he was at deathâs door, but why did it have to be so uncomfortable? This was the stuff Trucy wore for every magic show? This was the stuff Nick wore for Ivy Universityâs theatre productions? Larry was so thankful that despite his very long rĂŠsumĂŠ, such heavy makeup was never required; even the Steel Samurai live shows just needed the costumes and that was it.Â
âHe looks like a zombieâŚâ Apollo muttered. âI thought we were going for a few days of bedrest, not the walking dead.âÂ
âThatâs because I havenât applied the blush yet, Polly!âÂ
Oh god, there was more.Â
âHow much longer is this gonna take?â Larry didnât mean to sound like he was complaining, but it did feel like forever.Â
âJust a few finishing touches, aaaaand⌠Weâre done!â Trucy presented a hand mirror for Larry to assess the results.Â
âWow, I look like shit.â If it had been any other situation, that wouldnât even be close to the compliment it was right now.Â
âPerfect!â Trucy bounced on the balls of her feet. âThat means Polly can help you with the next part!â
âWhat?â Why me?â Apollo pointed to himself, almost hoping there was somehow another âPollyâ in the room.Â
âYou lose your voice all the time from yelling stuff like,â Trucy took a deep breath, ââIâM FINE!!ââ She cleared her throat. âYou know, like that.â
âI donât do it on purpose.â Apollo retorted.Â
âWell, how else is he going to sound sick?âÂ
âUm,â Larry chimed in, âI could just take a nap with Pess and get congested that way; thatâd make me sound pretty sick.â
âNope! Not allowed!â Trucy was quick to dismiss the decision. âYouâll ruin all my hard work on your makeup if you do that!âÂ
âAlright,â Apollo conceded with a sigh, âletâs get shouting.âÂ
. . .Â
It took until dusk for the excess yelling to do a number on Larryâs vocal chords, but what mattered was that it worked. Even when Apollo suggested he just give up, Larry kept going.Â
Now he looked, sounded, and honestly kind of even felt sick enough for even the most perceptive of lawyers to fall for his performance.Â
Trucy and Apollo had opted to leave the office and grab something to eat, mostly because Trucy couldnât stop giggling and Apollo feared she would give everything away. For a girl who took the art of the poker face so seriously, Trucy sure had a difficult time maintaining one whenever her dads were involved.Â
All Larry needed to do was just wait for just the right moment to pull the thermometer from the mug of hot water that Trucy had prepared, and all would be right. His boyfriends would immediately take pity on him, call in some substitutes, and spend all their newly gained freetime pampering him.Â
Life would be so good.Â
As soon as the door creaked open, it was showtime. Larry quickly plucked the heated thermometer to slide under his tongue, wincing as it slightly burned the inside of his mouth.Â
âSorry weâre late.â Phoenix spoke mid-yawn as he and Miles hung their coats on the office coat rack; surely this meant yet another late night of going over case notes⌠that is, if it werenât for Larryâs brilliant ruse. âGood news, though: the trial wrapped up today.âÂ
What!?Â
âIt actually wrapped up earlier today, but we needed to run some more errands.â Miles explained.
âMiles and I were actuallyââ Phoenixâs attention was soon grabbed by the sound of the beeping thermometer. âLarry?â He gently pulled the device from his boyfriendâs mouth and sighed at the numbers it displayed. âA hundred, on the dot.â He kissed Larryâs forehead. âPretty low, so thatâs probably why you donât feel very warmâŚâÂ
âIf youâre feeling unwell enough to need to check your temperature, Iâd say that alone calls for getting some rest.â Miles propped Larry up on his shoulder. âLetâs get you home. We can postpone tomorrowâs plans for a later date.â
âWhaââ Larry tried to ask what plans Miles was referring to, but his voice was just completely gone.Â
âOh, geez.â Phoenix made a noise in sympathy. âYeah, it wouldnât be much fun riding a rollercoaster with that nasty case ofâŚâ He started to snicker.Â
âDarling, donât.â Miles advised.
âLarry-ngitis.âÂ
Larry instinctively glowered. He forgot how much Phoenix loved that pun whenever he lost his voice. First missing out on a roller coaster, and now this. Good grief!
âOf course, it could be something that will pass fairly quickly, like a 24-hour bug.â Miles speculated, much to Larryâs relief. âWeâll just have to see how youâre faring tomorrow.â
âYeah, now that I think of it, it did come on fairly quickly.â If Phoenix was saying that out of suspicion, given the new circumstances, Larry would not have minded at all. âMaybe what you need is a nice hot cup of tea with lots of honey.â
That sounded so nice, to be allowed a night of pampering and an amusement park date with his boyfriends. It would be like that one saying, having a cake and eating it too, even though Larry didnât quite understand what the point would be to have a cake and not eat it.Â
All he had to do now was hope his voice would be back in shape in the morning, and all would be well.Â
. . .
Alas, Larryâs voice was, in fact, not back in shape in the morning.Â
Well, at least heâll have his day of pampering, which, he would have to sullenly admit, was not nearly as fun as a date at the amusement park.

Devlog #3 - Musings About Text Speed
Hello everyone! Welcome to this monthâs devlog! This one will be about what I did this month, and also text speed in video games.
Anyway, if you just stumbled upon this, I am Adrienne, also known as insertdisc5! Iâm the developer, writer, artist, main programmer, etc of the game. The game being In Stars and Time, which is the next and final game in the START AGAIN series, following START AGAIN: a prologue (available here!). You can find out more about In Stars and Time here!!!Â
ALRIGHT LETâS GET TO IT
I've had quite the productive month, mostly because I took a one week break from my day job to chill and rest and work on the game. Which meansâŚ
Act 3-4 is more or less complete and implemented and tested!!! I say "more or less" because I'm still missing a few illustrations, and a few sidequests I'd like to add. BUT!!! The main story for those acts is complete!!! YAHOO!!!
I've also been drawing a bunch, which hasn't happened for a little bit. After months of not drawing, I hung out with a friend and we drew together, which helped me unblock myself art-wise! THANKS, FRIEND!!!!! Anyway hereâs one cryptic illustration, just for you guys.
(Siffrin goes ^u^)
Iâve also been playtesting the game from beginning to (temporary) end! I havenât done that in a while, so it was interesting to play it in its entirety and see what works, what doesnât (and needs to be fixed), and also the parts that are broken code-wise and I need to jump into and figure out. Thereâs less of those than I anticipated though, so: YAHOO
I do want it on the record that while playing through I knew what was going to happen (of course I did, I wrote the damn thing), but I did get some very fun moments that made me go âoh god!!!! Thatâs really good!!!!!! Who wrote this!!!!â I wrote this. Itâs always fun to feel surprised by your own work, and it happened a bunch, so Iâm very happy!!!
And now itâs on to scripting the few things for Act 3-4 I have left, and then finally jump into scripting for the final acts, Act 5 and 6. Iâve had the base for the events written down for a very long time, as well as countless notes on âok we GOTTA MAKE SURE that this thing happensâ, so itâll be a matter of sitting down and making sure all those notes become a cool thing. Which it will, because, come on guys (I strike a pose) itâs me.
What else, what else⌠Oh! Somehow I found myself wondering about text speed this month.
Iâve asked my followers on twitter what text speed they preferred in their games, (buzzfeed voice) AND THE ANSWERS WERE SURPRISING (not really)
A few random ramblings about text and dialogue in video games:
-I found it very interesting that most people set text speed to fast-but-not-instant (FBNI speed!), and that people using instant speed were relatively low. It almost made me wonder if I should just force the player to play the game at FBNI speed (kinda like how Ace Attorney forces you to use one speed), but hey. If I can add options, might as well add them.Â
-I did leave instant speed in in ISAT, but it IS kind of sad to see the text appear all at once when I already made sure the text appearing would pause slightly at every comma or end of sentence (see above!) One of my gripes with instant speed is that it sometimes kills the pacing. Can you really feel the WEIGHT of a sentence if it appears all at once?!?! Thankfully, I did find out how to add very slight pauses with the instant speed! Heck yeah! Even at instant speed, you will go at MY pace, player!!!!
-Many people also love when, if your text speed isnât instant, you can press A while the text is still appearing to make the text appear all at once! Thank god this is already a thing in RPGmaker and I donât have to figure it out myself. What I DID figure out is how to make this NOT happen, for important moments! Again, you will go at MY pace, player!!! Itâs a fun, subtle way to catch the player off guard, so Iâm glad I figured it out, teehee.
-One of the reasons I was wondering about text speed is that Iâm a very fast reader, and I didnât really take that into account when I made START AGAIN: a prologue! I had a few dialogues where the text would advance to the next box on its own, without player input, mostly when a character would interrupt another or something like that. Because itâs fun and cool! Haha they interrupted this character so the text box advanced on its own! How realistic! What a good use of video game code powers!
But hereâs the thing: some players (especially streamers, who read everything aloud) did not have time to read what was on screen before it went away! And if they had the text speed on instant, the code made it so that they would get literally one frame of text before it went away! AND THATâS NOT GOOD!!! So for ISAT, I made sure I would add text that advances automatically VERY rarely, and when I did (because, again, itâs fun and cool), I made sure the text speed would slow down significantly, and the text would stay on screen for as long as it took me to say aloud a few times. So you are welcome, slow readers everywhere. Sorry it took me so long!!!!
Thatâs it, thatâs all for today! Let me know if you have any questions, or if thereâs any aspect of the game development struggle youâd like me to talk about! See you next time!!!
AND DONâT FORGET TO WISHLIST THE GAME ON STEAM ALSO IT REALLY HELPS BECAUSE STEAMâS ALGORITHM IS MORE LIKELY TO SHOW OFF GAMES WITH A HIGH AMOUNT OF WISHLISTS THAT'S THE REASON WHY GAME DEVS ALWAYS ASK TO WISHLIST!!! OKAY BYE!!!!Â

I know about the first trilogy so talk to me about Apollo and his gang, whatâs goin on with those guys
Oh god where do I start with this band of idiots
For anyone who hasnât played apollo justice Im gonna say right now MAJOR spoilers, actually Iâm gonna put a little keep reading doohickey just to make sure I donât spoil anything. Ok bye
Okay so. Apollo justice: ace attorney takes place well after the original trilogy has ended. Apollo is a rookie lawyer who works under the office of Kristoph Gavin, a lawyer whoâs title is the âcoolest defense in the west,â because heâs always so dang level headed during his trials. Heâs an incredibly successful attorney and heâs your assistant during the first trial of the game. Your job is to defend the legendary Phoenix Wright; whoâs now been charged with murder.
And like. Phoenix is a celebrity to Apollo. Apolloâs looked up to that man for all of his law school life. And now heâs defending him??? Shit is crazy!!! Even crazier, you go through that first trial and it turns out Kristoph is the one that killed the guy Phoenix was charged for murdering! Once Apollo picks up on this face Phoenix actually just like. Swaps places physically with Kristoph and suddenly itâs Phoenix as your assistant and youâre questioning your boss which is SO weird and I feel SO bad for Apollo because at the end of that first case Kristoph is proven guilty of murder and like. It was Apolloâs first real case and heâs immediately out of a job. He also, in a fandom famous moment, socks Phoenix in the jaw after the end of that case, because Phoenix admitting to using forged evidence to win the trial against Kristoph. The evidence was a replica of something Krisroph had stolen from the scene, and without it they wouldâve lost, and Apollo is rightfully pissed and so he just. Hits him real hard.
But itâs fine because Phoenix hires him later! Only, uh oh, heâs been lawyerless for 7 years so he doesnât really have the money to pay Apollo? Itâs fine no one ever brings it up so somehiw it isnât an issue even though Apollo makes several snarky comments about not ever getting payed. Anyway now Apollo is working for Phoenix. Heâs also subsequently working with Trucy Wright, who is Phoenixâs adopted daughter. Sheâs kind of crucial to Phoenixâs past because if he hadnât had a child to take care of he very may well have fallen into some realllllllly unhealthy coping mechanisms during the 7 year gap where he didnât have his badge. âYou keep mentioning this 7 year gap, how did he lose his badge?â you may be asking. WELL my friend I am happy to explain it to you
Remember how Kristoph killed someone? Well, 7 years ago that same man, Zak Gramarye, was charged for murder. Zak was a magician; he performed in a group called Troupe Gramarye, with his partners Valant, Thalassa, and Mr. Reus. The grandmaster of this troupe, Magnifi, was on his death bed, and set up a test for Valant and Zak to see which one would inherit the secrets of his big magic master secrets when he was gone. In this test, he asked each man separately to come in at different times and shoot him. If either actually shot him, theyâd fail the test and no one would get the magic secrets. Ultimately Zak came in first and couldnât bring himself to shoot, which was the answer Magnifi had wanted. Later, Valant came in and couldnât bring himself to shoot, either, but Zak had already gotten the secrets and so he was told he failed the test. Magnifi then shot himself and instead of telling the doctors âhey this guy just committed suicide,â he decides to frame Zak because heâs mad he didnât get the magic secrets. Zak is then arrested.
Kristoph was almost chosen to be Zakâs defense attorney. But Zak was a little weirdo and decided that he would only take a lawyer who could beat him at poker, and Kristoph lost to him so he chose Phoenix Wright to defend him instead. Kristoph got pissed and decided to get revenge on Phoenix, and he planted a piece of fake evidence on Phoenix. He then told the prosecutor of the trial that he knew Phoenix was going to use some forged evidence; the prosecutor, by the way, is Kristophâs younger brother, Klavier. Klavier is young and naive and believes him, and when Phoenix presents the fake evidence in court, Klavier calls him out on it. But before anyone can react to that, Zak disappears. Thatâs right. The defendant of the case straight up vanishes, in a puff of smoke just like a magic trick. No one ever saw him again (you see him again in a later apollo justice case but itâs more cryptic this way). After the court settled down from that, Phoenix was disbarred for his use of forged evidence and was left alone. Alone, save, for an eight year old Trucy Wright, formerly Trucy Gramarye. Thatâs right. Zak left his little daughter behind when he disappeared that day, and Phoenix was left to raise a child without his source of lawyerly income. And 7 years from that is where Apollo Justice starts.
So Trucy serves as Apolloâs assistant during the rest of the game. Most of the cases relate back to the Zak Gramarye backstory, you slowly get the whole picture of what really happened as each case goes on. Klavier is your primary prosecutor for this game. Klavier is my absolute favorite because heâs such a freak. In the Japanese games he sprinkles American phrases in his sentences because America is really cool over there, but the way the localization works American references have been switched to German references, and so Klavier turns into this weird German wannabe guy who says things like âachtung!â and âachâ and âwunderbar.â In addition to being a prosecutor heâs in a rock band, so he wears a lot of leather and one of his court sprites in an air guitar. He just riffs on the air for a good ten seconds. Heâs so stupid and very much one of them hot idiots and I love him so much. His and Apolloâs dynamic is a beautiful succession to the Edgeworth/Phoenix romance rivalry. The first time we see him heâs staring us down with his hands on his hips and he says âIâm used to being inspected by the ladies, but Iâve never felt this way with a man.â And I just. God heâs so gay. Heâs so gay how could he not be. Heâs so fucking gay just look at him look him up he is a disaster mess I fucking love him for it
The detective in Apollo justice is also my favorite!!! You remember Ema Skye? The assistant you get in the bonus case of the first ace attorney, the girl who wants to be a forensic scientist? Sheâs back! Itâs her! Sheâs not a forensic scientist (though in Spirit of Justice she finally gets to that position and sheâs so happy and Iâm so happy for her) and so sheâs pretty grumpy all the time, since sheâs stuck doing detective grunt work essentially, but her sprites are full of such emotion and I really adore her character design. Sheâs very passionate about fingerprinting and spraying luminol fluid and she is what got me hooked on forensics but that is not important she is super passionate about her dream job and she hates Klavier with a burning passion. He tries to be her friend and she is Not Having It. Ever. Itâs so funny.
Taking a step back, Trucy and Apollo are actually biological siblings!! They share the same mom, though itâs never said in canon that they figure that out. Thalassa Gramarye, the one from the magic troupe, left the troupe when she was very young and met a musician named Jove Justice. They got married and had a son, Apollo, but while traveling to another kingdom Jove was killed and in the chaos of it all Apollo was lost. Thalassa was devastated and went back home, got married to Zak Gramarye, and had another child, Trucy. Thalassa was supposedly killed during an accident during a magic show, but she actually just lost her memory and wandered the world as a mysterious singer trying to live her life without knowing anything about herself. The siblings never know of their relation, but man that doesnât stop the sibling energy from shining through. They have SUCH the dynamic of older brother little sister like itâs insane. The first trial Trucy co-counsels for she does this dramatic thing where she pretends to be kidnapped to buy them more time but Apollo thought she was actually kidnapped and he almost cries itâs very funny and also cute. Poor guy. Honestly all of apollo justice could be summed up by looking at Klavier and Apollo and saying poor guys.
Anyway Iâm sleepy and I wanna finish all the asks I got so hopefully that is what you wanted! Sorry if this was too long I really like the apollo justice era. Itâs such good story and the characters are my favorites, I enjoy them more than any other group. I hope this all makes sense.

Anyway this is @sapphire-wine fault so blame her.
Detective conan ace attorney au where Edgeworth gets reverted to the body of a child after he followed after two men dressed in black he suspected were a part of a smuggling ring. Gumshoe lost him and when Edgeworth woke up he was like 5 again.
Gumshoe finds him in a pile of his old clothes that heâs MANY sizes too small for now. But Gumshoe canât afford to take care of him! And he Definitely cant go home. He canât even reach the door handle! Luckily Mia, Wright and Maya are all at this theme park celebrating Wrightâs first case win!Â
Gumshoe: Hey can you hold onto this for me for a second?
Wright: Huh? Sure?
Gumshoe: *Hands him tiny Edgeworth but in glasses and baby*
Wright: ... *Miles sweating bullets as Phoenix studies him* YOUâRE SO CUTE!
Edgeworth, master of being where the murders are gets Wright and Mia a Lot of work. Edgeworth is trying so hard to track down this smuggling ring and get his body back. Wright laments to... Tails (open to a better/worse fake name for Miles) that the man he studied law to met has suddenly disappeared. Phoenix and Tails share Wrightâs bed the first few nights before they buy a second futon. Miles looks at him so sadly. Then Wright starts snoring and he looks less fond.
Miles regularly wakes Phoenix up in the middle of the night with nightmares. Phoenix cuddles him back to bed with all the Dad he will one day master. Talks to Mia about getting Tails into therapy because clearly that kid has seen some shit and is not handling it well.
Miles has to sit through first grade. It is a nightmare of children he does not know how to interact with (just like the first time!) and mind numbing boredom. (Just like last time!) Phoenix gets Many requests from the teachers to âjust let the kids write his own reports please.â Phoenix has no idea what theyâre talking about.
Heâs in a class with uhh Kay, Sebastian, Athena and Cody. They are very impressed by the fact he knows so much about the Steel Samurai and they make him watch the Jamminâ ninja as well. They solve kiddy cases as the Detective Kids. Sometimes these turn into murders/mafia/kidnappings. Itâs Fine.
Franziska flies in to see her Father again. (Read: To look for her missing brother that sheâs terrified her Father killed.) She is absolutely Brutal in court and Tears Wright and Mia apart. They manage to eke out a second day by the skin of their teeth.
Edgeworth sees her leaving. All rage and pain wrapped up in fury. Scrambles to remember what it was that kid called her that had her preening for Days.
âHey Ms. Whip Lady!â Oh he was getting hit for that.
The hit never came. â... What is it small child?â
âWould you like to play chess some time with me?â
â... If you would like,â (I am so lonely here) âI suppose I could.â (I just want my brother back)Â âMy little brother loves that game you know?â
âI do.â
Edgeworth sneaking into Lanaâs office to find some key evidence about the smuggling ring. Gant Almost finding him. Badd searching for the same group. Shields returning and putting together who Miles is after like 0.5 cases with him and proceeding to almost blow his cover every single time they meet. Edgeworth questioning the system that corrupted him. Badd being Deeply frustrated people keep letting the 5 year old Tails run around the crime scene. (Gumshoe why are you letting this happen?!)
Miles learning that Kayâs father was killed by the smuggling ring to stop the investigation. That Athenaâs uncle/brother was framed for murder by them. Realizing that Sebastianâs father is the head of the organization that attempted to have him killed (you thought it was a coincidence we went after you? You sniff around a little too much and Von Karma wasnât moving fast enough) Cody is- well heâs just a very good boy with a camera and a love of the steel samurai and justice. Miles loves him very much.
Phoenix getting so desperate to just Know if Miles is alive or not that he asks Maya to channel him. (Mia already refused) Maya accidentally pulling Gregory instead and Gregory, lost and confused, comforting Phoenix.
Ema developing a âcureâ for his deaged state but unfortunately it only works for a little while. âPhoenix I-â Love you too. He wants to say. But their isnât time. There is Never enough time.
Them all tearing down the entire smuggling ring and uprooting the deep roots of corruption in their system. The sword raised above the guilty chest of the corrupted and damned ready to plunge it in for one final victory over evil and madness-
When Von Karma kicks the feet out from under him.
And suddenly their whole case is falling apart because their Lead witness is suddenly pleading guilty to his fatherâs murder and there are so many voices demanding his guilt and so many more asking where Tails went- No one cared about Edgeworth. Edgeworth should just Die. Let him just die boy. Donât make us force your hand.
Miles curling up that Same Exact way Tails does after an earthquake. Phoenix who was So ready to defend him realizing that Miles has been manipulating him for Months now and leaving the courthouse in a rage. Franziska holding her brother that sheâs been looking for so long as his bones Melt back down to youth. A glazed eye boy taking the stand and confessing to his fatherâs guilt. Mia griting her teeth and not knowing how to proceed.
Von Karma demanding a verdict because Itâs rather obvious isnât it?
Franziska yelling out Objection! Standing against her Father. Shaking and demanding a fair trial for him. Protecting her Little Brother from her Father. From Papa with shaking hands.
(I spent the last months thinking youâd taken him from me once. Iâll not stand by and let you do that to me for Real)
He delaying the trial enough that Wright comes back. Them fighting side by side. The kids yelling out things that Miles taught them. The Ballistic markings Mr. Nick!
Coming together at the last minute to save Miles Edgeworth. Uncovering the truth and exposing the corruption of the system. Miles and Phoenix talking. I wanted to save you. You did.
Edgeworth taking the detective kids out for trips to the museum after its all over. Them being surprised how little their dynamic changes despite the fact he can now drive. He is still an absolute pushover but now he can buy them candy.
Lana and Mia reconnect over this kid they got very attached to (Miles vs Tails) and swapping stories and dragging him mercilessly. Maya dragging Edgeworth in his full adult glory to their (previously established) weekly steel samurai viewing party that Does take place in a mountain of pillows and blankets.
Phoenix sitting up late that first night that Edgeworth went back home and Missing. Missing all the space that was filled by another person. By caring for another person. (Shouldnât it be a relief? Why am I so empty?) Mindlessly calling Edgeworth who answers because he canât sleep even though heâs exhausted. (i donât want to dream and wake up alone.) Come over Edgeworth. Edgeworth sleeping on the futon on the floor and Wright dropping his hand over the edge for Edgeworth to hold. Edgeworth not waking up alone.
Detective Conan au.
#miles edgeworth#phoenix wright#kay faraday#mia fey#maya fey#detective conan au#i'm not totally commited on the kids#maybe kay should be her normal age and we put someone else there. The Attack of the Tickle Bot
Happy New Year everyone! Hereâs another fun Ace Attorney story with Blackquill this time! Enjoy!
Series: Ace Attorney
Characters: Athena Cykes, Apollo Justice, Simon Blackquill, Ponco
Words: 2,318
Summary: Athena, Apollo, and Simon are working together to update Poncoâs emotion sensing technology. Once Poncoâs systems are finished, the little robot initiates a game it remembers playing with Athena in order to make the three smile. (Note: This occurs after Dual Destinies but before Spirit of Justice. There are references to the last case of Dual Destinies, but nothing that's a major spoiler to the story. Enjoy!)
---
It was early afternoon at the Wright Anything Agency and Athena was hard at work tinkering with Poncoâs programming. She had borrowed Ponco from the space center earlier that day in order to give the red robot an update that could sense more human emotions. Apollo was also at the office to help alongside Athena while Phoenix and Trucy were out for a magic show; however, Athena also decides to call Simon over to help update Ponco's emotion sensing technology.
Athena greets the prosecutor as he walks into the office, âHey Simon! Thanks for coming!â
Blackquill closes the door behind him and makes his way over to the two lawyers. âAthena. Justice-dono. You needed my help?â
Athena stops what sheâs doing to inform Simon. âYep! Weâre updating Ponco to help them sense more emotions. I know youâre not a robotics expert, but you, me, and Apollo know Ponco the best, so weâll recognize if the update works or not.â
Simon crosses his arms, âFine, but donât expect me to know what Iâm doing.â
Athena smiles, âGreat! Thanks Simon!â
The three begin working on Ponco and run different trials on the botâs new features. After about an hour, they were ready to set all of Poncoâs new systems into action.
Athena kneels down to turn on the bot, âAlright, letâs see if this works.â She pushes a button in the compartment at the back of Poncoâs head and closes it to protect the rest of the wiring. Ponco starts to come alive and the screen that forms their face begins to turn on. The robot blinks with their digital eyes and glances around the room before recognizing the three people in front of them.
âOh! Hello Athena, Apollo, and Simon!â Ponco says in their charming robotic tone.
Athena grins at the little machine, âHey Ponco! How are you?â
âGood! Thank you for asking!â Ponco responds, âCan we have fun now?â
âSure!â Athena replies to the excited robot.
Ponco puts their arms in the air and cheers, âHooray! Play time!â Immediately, Ponco zooms towards Blackquill and accidentally knocks him down to the ground.
"Ow! Hey, watch it!" Simon grunts.
âPonco! Careful!â Athena exclaims, concerned for Simonâs safety. Blackquill tries to get up, but Ponco suddenly grabs both of his arms and holds them out in front of him.
âGrr! Get off you piece of scrap metal!â Simon growls. He tries to free his hands, but the robot refuses to listen and continues to hold on to his arms. Apollo and Athena immediately grow worried that Ponco is malfunctioning and might hurt Simon. The two lawyers quickly move over to the situation and try to pull Ponco away from behind.
âPonco! What are you doing?â Apollo shouts as he and Athena try to free Blackquill from the robot's grasp. After a bit of tugging, Ponco finally loses their grip and Simonâs arms are released. Athena moves Ponco away from the prosecutor and speaks to the little robot like it was a child being scolded.
âPonco! What was that for? Why did you attack Simon?â Athena questions the machine. The red robot looks at Athena with its innocent digital eyes.
âIâm sorryâŚI was just trying to helpâŚâ Ponco says with a bit of sadness in their robotic voice.
Apollo looks down at the little bot. âHow was that supposed to help?â he asks calmly.
Ponco starts to plead their case, âWell, I was trying to make him smile with a game I had learned from Athena.â
Athena stares at the robot with confusion. âHuh? A game? What are you-â Suddenly, Athena realizes exactly what Ponco was trying to do. She lets out a laugh. âOoh, I get it now.â She turns to Blackquill with a playful smile.
âRemember that game we used to play when we were younger, Simon? The one when you visited me at the space center?â Athena asks the prosecutor dressed in black and white.
Blackquill, still sitting on the ground and dusting himself off, looks at her with a puzzled expression. âNo. What are you talking about?â he questions, genuinely unsure of what sheâs referring to.
She laughs again and turns to face the red robot. âPonco, I think Simon needs a reminder,â Athena says with a mischievous inflection in her voice, âGo ahead and show him.â
The little machine whirs with excitement again, âHooray! Playtime!â
âWhat?!â Simon exclaims, confused as to why Athena would release the robot after him, but before he could question her further, the little bot, once again, zooms after him and knocks him down onto his back. He sits up and tries to push the red robot away from whatever it was planning, but Ponco grabs both of his wrists with one robot claw and holds his arms out in front of him. Blackquill tries to pull his hands free, to no avail. He glares at the orange-haired lawyer.
âAthena! What is the meaning of this-â but Simon was abruptly cut off when he felt Poncoâs other claw hand slip under his vest and begin tickling his side. Blackquill immediately stifflies his giggles and he remembers exactly what game Athena was referring to. When he would visit the space center, little Athena would sometimes tackle him down and start a tickle fight between the two for fun. He would usually let her win, but sometimes little Athena would call for Poncoâs assistance in order to double team on the prosecutor. Now, years later, Ponco and Athena are using their same strategy in order to get Simon to laugh.
Apollo is completely unaware of whatâs going on. He thinks that Poncoâs system is glitching out again.
âWhatâs happening to Blackquill?!â the lawyer in red exclaims with concern. He quickly tries to move over to the situation, but Athena holds out an arm to stop him.
âRelax Apollo. Heâs fine. Thereâs one thing that you donât know about SimonâŚâ she pauses and looks over at the almost giggling prosecutor with a smile, âHeâs secretly ticklish.â
âWhat?!â Apollo remarks with surprise and amusement, âBlackquill is ticklish?â
Simon stutters as he tries to hold back his laughter, âI am n-not! GAH! P-Poncohoho! Hahaha!â but Blackquill bursts into laughter as Ponco begins tickling his ribs. The prosecutor pulls his hands out of Poncoâs grasp and tries to push the little robot away, but Ponco slips their other hand under his vest to continue the playful attack. Simon attempts to pull the robot's mischievous claws away from his middle, to no avail.
Athena chuckles, âNot ticklish, huh? Your laughter says otherwise.â
Apollo also canât help but laugh at the situation. âHaha, Blackquill smiling? Now thatâs something I didnât expect to see.â
âWhehehen I get out of hehehere, yohou both are going to get ihihit! Hahaha!â Simon tries to sound threatening through his laughter. The two lawyers giggle at him again.
Athena turns to her co-worker. âWell, then we better take advantage of it now, right Apollo?â
Apollo crosses his arms with a smile, âYou go ahead, Iâm having fun just watching.â
Simon tries to sit up and glare at the lawyers as Ponco continues to scratch at his ticklish torso, âWhy you little-Hahaha!â
Athena giggles and tries to put on a serious face. âOh, youâre in for now Simon! Ponco, secure his arms over his head!â
âIâm on it, Athena!â Ponco exclaims. The little bot immediately stops tickling Blackquill and moves their hands out of his vest. Blackquill tries to escape, but Ponco quickly rolls behind him and grabs his arms up over his head.
âHey!â Simon growls, but he immediately panics once he realizes the position heâs in. He looks over at Athena with wide eyes as she approaches him with wiggling fingers. He tries to scoot backwards, but heâs unable to move due to Poncoâs trap. He calls out to her as a last-ditch effort.
âA-Athena! Donât you dare-AH! HAHAHA! ATHENAHAHA!â but Athena refuses to listen to him and slips her hands under his coat to begin digging into his underarms. He bursts into laughter and quickly yanks his arms out of Poncoâs hold in order to protect himself, but Athenaâs hands were already honed in on their target. He tries to squirm away from the lawyer as he continues giggling uncontrollably.
âYep. Still the most ticklish here, huh Simon?â Athena teases the squirming prosecutor.
âAhahathenahaha!â Simon laughs and tries to move the lawyerâs hands away from his weak spot. He then curls himself into a giggling ball and rolls onto his side to avoid Athenaâs attack. The playful lawyer in yellow switches tactics and sneaks one hand under his vest to wiggle her fingers into his belly while the other continues to tickle his underarm.
Athena teases the prosecutor again, âHehe. Whatâs wrong, Simon? Youâre much more giggly than usual.â
âI ahaham NOT!â Blackquill tries to deny.
Apollo laughs and canât help but poke a little fun at the prosecutor too. âLooks like heâs having a hard time holding back a smile.â
âBut smiling is good for you!â Ponco chimes in from the side.
Athena chuckles as she moves her hand to tickle his ribs. âYou hear that Simon? Maybe we should do this more often! It wouldnât hurt for you to smile once and a while.â
Simon jumps and rolls onto his back. âNO! Nohoho! Ohokay! I surrehehender! Hahaha! Now cuhuhut it out!â
Athena smiles and wiggles her fingers into his side one last time before releasing him from her tickle attack. Simon flops on the ground and wraps his arms around his body as he catches his breath. After a few moments, Athena reaches out her hand to help him up. He takes it and she assists him back on his feet.
âYou alright, Simon?â Athena asks, a little concerned that she took it too far. Simon stays quiet and doesnât even glance at Athena.
âSimon?â Athena repeats herself, more concerned than last time. He still stays silent.
Apollo grows worried as well. âBlackquill?â
Finally, the prosecutor looks up at the two lawyers with a fierce glare and says a one word response, âRun.â
Immediately, Athena and Apolloâs eyes grow wide.
âOh no-AH!â Athena shrieks. The lawyers try to run, but Simon quickly lunges at the two and catches them both from behind by their suit collars. They struggle to escape, but theyâre unable to break free of his hold.
âSo, you think almost tickling me to death is funny, do you?â Simon snarls at his captives.
Athena panics, âDeath is an exaggeration! C-Come on! We were just having a little fun! Reliving old memories! R-Right Apollo?â
Apollo quickly tries to defend himself, âDonât bring me into this! It was your idea in the first place!â
The lawyer in yellow glares at her co-worker and puts her hands on her hips, âWell, I didnât see you do anything to help!â
Apollo glares back at her, âOh yeah?! Well I-â
âSilence!â Blackquill exclaims. The two immediately quiet down and continue to panic.
âI told you two that you both would pay,â the prosecutor says with a fearful tone. He then looks at Ponco with a mischievous smirk, âPonco! Get them!â
Apollo and Athena flinch and look at the robot with alarm. âWhat?!â the two lawyers exclaim at the same time.
âHooray! More play time!â Ponco says with excitement. The little robot then quickly begins to approach the two with its claws in the air.
âP-Ponco!â Apollo calls out to the robot as he puts his hands up in defense.
Athena tries the same tactic, âW-Wait! AH!â
But Ponco strikes and begins tickling Apollo and Athenaâs sides with one arm each.
"Hehehey!" Apollo laughs as he tries to protect his sides.
âPohohonco!â Athena giggles and protects her sides alongside the lawyer in red. Simon then loosens his grip, and the two slide to the ground as Ponco continues to tickle them. They try to escape from Poncoâs attack, but they are unable to squirm away from the robot's nimble claws.
Simon crosses his arms and looms over them with a smirk, âYouâre right Justice-dono, it is fun just watching.â
âNice gohohoing Apollohoho!â Athena remarks sarcastically through her laughter.
âI rehehegret saying thahahat!â Apollo responds through his giggles as he tries to pull the robot's hand away that had slipped under his vest. After a few more moments, Simon speaks again.
âHad enough yet?â he says in a playful tone.
âYehehehes!â the two lawyers respond at the same time. Simon signals Ponco to stop tickling them, and they both lie on the ground with residual giggles. Simon offers a hand to them and helps the two back on their feet.
âThanksâŚâ Apollo says, still catching his breath.
âOkayâŚwe deserved that,â Athena responds breathless as well.
Simon smirks at the two, âGood. Now weâre even.â
âThat was fun! All three of your happiness levels went up!â Ponco cheers with a digital smile.
Blackquill scoffs and looks away from the little bot, âHmph. There must have been an error in your calculationsâŚ"
Athena giggles at the prosecutor's flustered reaction. She then suddenly processes the second half of Ponco's remark and looks at the robot with surprise, âWaitâŚPonco, were you keeping track of that the whole time?â
âIndeed I was!â
The lawyer in yellow grins proudly. âWell, it looks like the update worked then!"
âMaybe a little better than expectedâŚâ Apollo chuckles, still clutching his sides from Poncoâs previous attack.
Athena laughs at Apolloâs remark, then turns to face the robot. âAlright! Now that weâve had our fun, letâs get your update finalized so we can send you back home to the space center.â
âOkay!â Ponco agrees.
Athena, Apollo, and Simon work with one another to test the final parts of Poncoâs systems. Even if they would never admit it, the three knew that they had fun. The little playful robot not only reminded them of good memories, but it also helped the three create new ones together as well.

Hey, bestie. Have you ever thought of writing for more fandoms (alongside the ones you have in your masterlist)?
Whatever community you can think of. What would you be willing to write for?
Oh gosh, that's hard because I tend to fixate on things rather than be into multiple things strongly enough to write for them.
I'm very much fixated on Hermitcraft at the minute but I get there's...no demand for it unless I'm not looking hard enough.
Uhm, as for fandoms I've been in in the past that I have previously written for that I could maybe do again if I got into it or fandoms I like but have never written for before:
Devil May Cry, possibly though it feels a bit mature for fanfic now hehe
Persona 5, though I watched the anime because I can't play turn-based RPGs, they hurt my small brain :[
Older fandoms like Undertale and Deltarune, maybe? Haven't been into them in a while but, when I was, it was deep. I made a full PowerPoint with sound effects and everything to mimic the game for my own story.
Again, a bit dark for fanfic, but I really enjoyed Little Nightmares 1 & 2! I had started rewriting the story for my English teacher, actually.
Ace Attorney I was super into for quite a while: made my own characters and cases and evidence files, it was brilliant.
JoJo's Bizarre Adventure...it was...a weird period of my life.
And, oh goodness, Danganronpa was probably my first real fixation with media-
I've watched both Helluva Boss and Hazbin Hotel, or at least a bit of it, I'm not sure if it's updated since I last checked, but idk if I know the characters well enough to write about them.
Another one that's really too dark for fanfic is SCP, but I loooooved reading about SCPs and playing the games. I even made my own! It was terrible.
OH EDDSWORLD. I almost forgot- Eddsworld was such a gigantic part of my childhood- The only issue is that the characters are based off of real people, which can be a bit weird to write fanfic for.
Yeah, I did a loooot of fandom hopping hehe, but I did genuinely enjoy my experiences with all these fandoms.
I'd be willing to write for these fandoms if someone really wanted me to. I don't mean to get deep, but a lot of these fandoms remind me of pretty terrible parts of my history with bad friends :P but I'm over it and could definitely muster up the courage to write for these fandoms if it was requested!
After all, I have you guys now, and new better friends irl so I'm doing much better than I once was - you especially, Symmie, it feels nice to have someone I can call bestie again!
And I have this funky little man who my brain refuses to let me forget but he brings the serotonin so eh I don't really mind~

Dear Anonymous,
I still have yet to play (or watch) DGS2, unfortunately, so weâll have to save that part for another time, but Iâd love to delve into the shared adventures of this adorable duo in the first game.
When Ryuunosuke first meets Susato, sheâs nothing more to him than an ally in his defense in court.
He doesnât see her again until he and Kazuma find themselves at the end of their rope.
It makes you wonder if sheâs the one who founded whatever School of Interrupting at Just the Right Time so many Ace Attorney characters apparently went to, doesnât it?
When she appears, âcalm and dignified, in our desperate final moments,â to use Ryuunosukeâs words, she causes quite the stir. Luckily, the five minutes granted to her by the judge to present some crucial evidence is all she needs to help him and Kazuma pull off the first turnabout in Ace Attorneyâs history.
The mysterious legal assistantâs wish for Ryuunosukeâs good fortune was granted, apparently.
Thus Ryuunosu-- Um... Is it okay if I call him âRyuâ for short? Thus Ryuâs life was saved by a humble young woman who had the courage and decency to collect, summarize, and present the evidence that turned the case around in the nick of time. After leaving to finish his acquittal procedures with a humble bow, she disappeared, never to be seen by him again.
Or so he thought.
Similar to Phoenix and Mayaâs first encounter, Ryu and Susato's second meeting occurs under the most tragic of circumstances. His close friend and classmate has been found dead in his cabin on the ship he managed to smuggle himself onto. Unlike Phoenix and Mayaâs situation, however, itâs the lawyer (or soon-to-be lawyer) who is initially blamed for his death. To make matters worse, the young woman who helped to save his life isnât feeling quite so compassionate this time around.
Her anger and distrust are understandable, considering that the evidence seems to point to Ryu as the culprit, on top of the fact that Kazuma was her foster brother. Luckily, sheâs polite and reasonable enough to hear Ryuâs side of things, and even claims that she wants to believe him, so the two of them are at least able to treat each other civilly.
That is...until he tries to start investigating.
Thereâs a bucket load of energy beneath that demure countenance of hers, it turns out. Her move even has a special name -- the âSusato Toss.â Who wouldâve thought she came straight out of Street Fighter?
Thankfully, she still has a reasonable side.
By presenting evidence of his innocence, Ryu not only vindicates himself, but finally starts to gain Susatoâs trust.
Sadly, her trust only lasts until a certain world-famous detective shows up to accuse Ryu of being a Russian revolutionary.
Itâs hard to blame her, of course. Who wouldnât trust THE Sherlock Holmesâs logic?
Nonetheless, her determination to find out more about Kazumaâs death is strong enough for her to begrudgingly continue the investigation with Ryu. One notable moment occurs here when he attempts to gain favor wither her by appealing to her love of mystery novels.
Sheâs no fool, of course, and only dislikes him even more for expecting her to fall for it.
If I didnât know any better, Iâd say this was the âmain characters donât get along until theyâre forced into a situation togetherâ clichĂŠ. This situation may not fit that clichĂŠ perfectly, but itâs not too far off if you ask me.
When Ryu is finally allowed to investigate outside the cabin, Susato begins to show a bit more sympathy for him.
I have to give her some credit for that -- it takes a special kind of person to show compassion for a possible murderer. It also seems like sheâs beginning to see Ryu as more of a human being than a heartless criminal. Baby steps, as they say.
From that point on, their dialogue begins taking on a more friendly tone. Thus Susato, whether on purpose or by fate, takes on the role of the first official assistant in Ace Attorneyâs history. And boy, does she pull it off like a pro.
To make a long story short, their cooperative efforts combined with the ridiculous logic of a kooky detective (as well as the assistance of the less kooky Detective Hosonaga) bring them to the truth of Asougiâs death in the end. While this clears Ryu of the crime and offers some much-needed closure for both him and Susato, his death still affects them deeply.
Something wonderful stems from this tragedy, though -- a crucial moment, not only for the two of them, but also for the Japanese and British Empires.
With Asougiâs passing, the exchange program between Great Britain and Japan is forced into suspension, unless, somehow, a replacement attorney can be found before the ship reaches London.
Itâs a shame it has to end this way after all theyâve been through together, but thatâs just the way it goes someti--
...Oh. Well, then. Who wouldâve seen that coming? (Besides us, I mean.)
And strangely enough, the young woman who once saw Ryu as a cold-blooded murderer has this to say about him becoming an attorney:
Thus a new attorney/assistant pair arises from the ashes of one attorneyâs passing (pun fully intended), and the two of them step into a new journey in their lives together. And thankfully, it wasnât exactly the clichĂŠ it appeared to be -- the two of them are now trusted friends, and Susato even offers to let Ryu toss her three times as punishment for not believing him. (It doesnât quite end that way, but thatâs beside the point.)
The first leg of said journey takes place in the âcentre of the worldâ the incredible city of London. What a place to begin, am I right?
Thus their incredible legal adventure begins (or adventures begin, I should say) in beautiful Victorian Era Britain. To describe their encounters here briefly (and so I donât spend a whole year on this essay), they learn together how the British court system works...
...about its imperfections...
...how it feels to pull off a turnabout in a British courtroom...
...and perhaps most importantly, about the value of trust.
To say nothing of their misadventures with Mr. Holmes, his young genius assistant, and several other unforgettable British folk.
And a fellow Japanese immigrant, too, of course. Â Who could forget him?
You know, Iâm starting to wonder if he might be one of Larryâs ancestors.
The game throws one final curveball for the great legal duo before it ends. After telling Susato sheâs the worldâs best legal assistant, Ryu gets a very unexpected response from her:
When he attempts to confront her about it, all he gets is another Susato Toss.
What could someone like her, whoâs already proven her worth as a legal assistant several times, be hiding? Unfortunately for Ryu, heâs unlikely to find out soon, since her fatherâs illness has called her back home, leaving him to pull off his next turnabout on his own. She doesnât go without leaving behind as much helpful evidence as she can muster, of course.
But, as fate would have it, a storm prevents her ship from departing for at least half a day, giving Ryu and his new flatmates a chance to see her off. On top of that, it gives Ryu the chance to find out precisely what inspired Susatoâs words of doubt.
He catches her preparing to throw a copy of the British Empireâs Code of Law into the sea. What would cause her to do such a thing?
It turns out she broke one of the rules by tampering with the scene of the crime, and another by concealing that fact. Her intentions may have been good, but her conscience became a little too heavy for her to let it go. She takes it a step further by claiming that, for one moment, she began to doubt the law.
She may not be wrong in stating this (she learned it firsthand in the British courts, after all), but it still caused her to see herself as a failure of a legal assistant. Luckily for her, though, Ryu had learned some things himself in the time they spent together.
While her methods were questionable at best, Ryu recognizes something in Susato that sets her and every just person apart from a criminal: a desire to protect the innocent. Whereas Chrogray used her tampering as a way to protect himself, her only desire was to protect Ginaâs life and to ensure that Ryu would be able to prove her innocence in the end. In other words, her faith in the system may have been lacking, but her desire for justice, like Ryuâs, never faltered for even a moment. With that knowledge in mind, the two of them can part with a better knowledge of the law, a better understanding of each other, and smiles on their faces.
So, to sum it up, Ryu and Susato go from being friendly acquaintances, to a murder suspect and suspecter (for lack of a better word), to investigative partners, to full-fledged legal partners, and finally, to a legendary legal duo. Will their relationship ever go any further than that?
Also, full disclosure -- itâs been a long time since I watched Dai Gyakuten Saiban, so I had to do a hefty amount of re-watching in order to remember some of these details...hence why this essay took so long. Thanks for waiting!
And hey, howâs that for good timing?
Donât know about you, but Iâm eagerly looking forward to revisiting this unforgettable saga. And, yâknow...doing it the proper way instead of depending on fan translations.

What It Means - Ace Attorney Fic
Rating: T Category: Gen Pairings: Nothing romantic, but focusing on the family relationship between Trucy and Phoenix Word Count: 2k Warnings: discussions of abandonment
Trucy explains to Apollo and Athena what it really means to her to have Phoenix as her daddy.
She looked out the window, her eyes tracing the cars below, reflected in the glass. âAthena,â Trucy said, voice just slightly off, still refusing to look either of them in the eye. âDid Daddy ever tell you the story of how I got adopted?â
Read on Ao3
It was a quiet day at the Wright Anything Agency, most were, and Phoenix had stepped out to grab some case file or another. It was in that little time frame, a short break while he was gone, that Apollo got around to asking a question that had been on his mind for a while.
He sat on the couch that faced Phoenixâs desk, opposite Athena and Trucy on the other. Athena sat on the right, and while she insisted she was doing work, Apollo could clearly see her playing some idle game or another on her holographic screens. He wondered how she ever thought she was hiding it when the screens were translucent.
Trucy sat on the other side of the couch, legs dangling over the couchâs arms as she shuffled up a pack of playing cards she was rehearsing some new trick with. He wasnât quite sure of the details, but as long as it didnât risk him losing a limb, he figured it probably wasnât important. Trucy would probably ask him to watch the trickâs successful execution within the next few days or so anyway.
âHey TrucyâŚâ Apollo said, voice cutting through the comfortable silence, disturbing the ease. âSorry if this is a weird question, itâs probably coming out of nowhere, Iâve just been wondering for a whileâŚâ
He trailed off, but Trucy was already responding.
âSure, Polly, go for it! But if itâs about any of my magic tricks, those are secrets! I canât tell you any of those, you should know that by now!â
She laughed and shook a finger at him, as though he were a misbehaving kid. While she was clearly having fun, Athena appearing amused as well, Apollo kept a serious expression on his face.
âItâs just⌠this sounds weird, but Iâve always wondered why you call Mr. Wright âdaddyâ.â
He hated how awkward it sounded, but how on earth was he supposed to ask that naturally?
Trucy just laughed again.
âWell Iâm not going to call him âMr. Wrightâ like you and Athena do! Heâs your boss, not mine, Polly! Or did you forget?â
She laughed and winked, and Athena laughed along as well.
âCome on, Apollo,â Athena chimed in, âWhat kind of question is that supposed to be?â
Apollo frowned, crossing his arms over his chest.
âOh, cut it out. Thatâs not what I meant. Itâs just⌠Isnât that a childish thing to call your dad? I mean, youâre sixteen, I thought you wouldâve grown out of it by now or something.â
Athena shot Apollo a glare, sans malice, as she waved her screens away.
âDonât listen to him, Trucy! Youâre still young, call your dad whatever you want!â
Apollo wouldâve stuck his tongue out at Athena but he refused to stoop to such childish things, so he settled for glaring at her instead.
âGeez, chill Athena! Iâm just telling the truth, itâs not like itâs a bad thing. Iâm just wondering. It is kinda childish, you have to admit.â
It was Trucyâs turn to cross her arms now, over her legs as pulled them down and tucked them close to her chest.
âIt might be, I guess. Though, I donât really care, thatâs not why I call him that.â
Athenaâs eyes widened and Widget lit up yellow.
âWait, wait, wait. Trucy, you actually have a reason? Huh, and I thought Apollo was just going off on a conspiracy theory.â
âHey! Give me a little more credit than that!â
Trucy laughed at their antics, but it didnât go unnoticed by either of the others that it was missing the spark it had previously held.
Apollo started to feel a pang of regret.
âWell, kinda?â She said, holding a smile that was beginning to waver. âI mean I guess I have a reason, but I also sort of donât? Itâs⌠complicated, I guess.â
Trucy stood, walking past the table and over to the window next to her fatherâs desk. Apollo and Athena both watched her, unsure of what they should say, if anything.
She looked out the window, her eyes tracing the cars below, reflected in the glass.
âAthena,â Trucy said, voice just slightly off, still facing the window, still refusing to look either of them in the eye. âDid Daddy ever tell you the story of how I got adopted?â
Athena nodded, then remembered Trucy couldnât see her.
âYeah, well⌠a bit? Boss said I didnât need to know all the details, but he said he adopted you right around the time he lost his badge. He was defending your father, I think, but then he disappeared. I donât know much more than that.â
Trucy nodded, still looking out the window.
âYeah⌠thatâs pretty much it. I donât have to explain to you guys what it feels like⌠knowing you donât have parents. No one to look out for you. It was only two weeks, way shorter than what either of you have had to deal with, so I guess I shouldnât complain, hahaâŚâ
Athena bit the edge of her lip, unsure of what to say, but Trucy continued.
âZak Gramarye, Shadi Enigmar, whatever you want to call him.â She said, waving her hand nonchalantly, âHe ran away. Disappeared, really. The only end appropriate for a magician. And itâs not like I even have the right to be upset over it, I helped him do it.â
She said those words as if she was horrified with herself, dropping her hand to grip the edge of the desk, then let out a breath, soft and shuddering slightly.
âHe left⌠and he never came back. But before long⌠he, my new daddy that is, called me into his office.â
Trucy paused for a moment, gathering her thoughts.
âI remember the look on his face when he told me⌠âno living relativesâ. And I remember even clearer⌠what he looked like when he said would take me in, instead.â
Trucy laughed a little, but it was hollow, empty.
âDid you know it was only supposed to be temporary? Just until âdaddy came backâ. Well⌠guess who never showed up?â
She raised a hand to her eyes, wiping away tears that neither Apollo or Athena could see.
âAnd the funny thing is⌠I should be upset. I am upset⌠but not in the way Iâm supposed to be. Because every time I think about it⌠Every time I get scared⌠w-worry that Iâll be all alone⌠a-again⌠I remember what Daddy told me.â
She raised her head just a little higher as she spoke, eyes closed as she quoted her memory.
ââYou can call me âdaddyâ, if youâd like. It doesnât have to be today, or anything.â... ThatâŚ. is what he said. And I, a foolish child, accepted it the second he said it.â
Trucy lowered her head again.
âHe was so willing to just⌠let me into his family. Just like that. Before he knew about the Gramarye gift, before I had done anything for him but caused him misery. A-and I was pushy and upfront, I wanted him to be my dad right away, and Iâd just lost the first. Maybe that makes me a horrible daughter, willing to abandon someone that quick. Maybe I just really wanted him to like me. I leapt at the chance to be someone's daughter again like I was jumping to a life raft off a sinking ship. Maybe⌠I was scared that someone would leave me behind again. But the thing is⌠Daddy never did. It was supposed to be temporary, just until Zak Gramarye made his return. And when he never did, Daddy never said a word. He just kept on caring for me, kept on loving me.â
Trucy took a deep breath in, shuddering again, stronger this time. It was sounding more like a sob.
âItâs different for him, Iâm sure. But the moment he told me I could call him my daddy is the moment he became mine, to me. The moment he told me heâd be there for me, like a daddy should be. And every moment after that⌠even if he was busy, even if things were desperate, no matter what.â
Her voice was choked now and Athena knew she was crying, the same tears she knew were stinging Trucyâs eyes beginning to sting her own. The sound of Trucyâs pain pierced her like a knife slashing through her heart.
âHe always comes back.â
Trucyâs voice cracked on the final words, and by now Athena had already stood up, closely followed by Apollo.
âI should probably tell him all this someday⌠but for now itâs just my little secret. Can you promise me youâll keep it?â
When Trucy finally turned to meet Apollo and Athenaâs eyes, she found both of them looking at her with equally teary expressions as her own.
âOf course.â
âAbsolutely.â
Trucy smiled, and it was real this time.
Athena opened her arms, and before she could blink, Trucy had hopped off the desk and into her arms, gripping her tight in a hug. Athena held Trucy close, feeling the slight shake of her body as she hugged her securely. It wasnât long before another set of arms, Apolloâs to be sure, joined in the mix.
They stayed there for a moment, Apollo and Athena holding Trucy, protecting her from anything outside that might harm her, though of course, nothing was there.
And then, as soon as it had begun, Trucy let go, and the hold gently dissolved.
âIâm alright, I really am. Iâm still scared, sometimes. But I know Daddy will be there for me. And youâll be there for me too⌠I hope.â
âOf course we will!â Athena cried out, and it took her a moment to realize that Widget had called out the same thing.
âAthenaâs right. Widget too. Weâre here for you, Trucy,â Apollo added. His voice was more stable than either of the girls, but he couldnât hide the slight tremor in it from Athena.
âThank you. Both of you,â Trucy said.
And as she wiped her eyes with the back of her hand once more, Phoenix stepped back inside the office, files in tow.
âHey gang, Iâm back!â He called, smile dropping as his gaze landed on his daughter scrubbing the tear tracks off of her cheeks.
âTrucy! Are you alright? Whatâs wrong?â
He rushed forward, eyes scanning over Trucyâs body for any signs of physical injury.
âNothing! Everythingâs fine, Daddy!â
There were still tears at the corners of his daughter's eyes as she looked up to her fatherâs concerned face with a smile. He reached down, opening his arms to allow Trucy to hug him, which she gladly did.
âAre you sure?â Phoenix continued, shooting a worried glance at his employees over Trucyâs shoulder. âApollo, Athena? Should I be worried?â
Athena shook her head.
âAll good here, boss!â
Apollo twisted his bracelet around his wrist as he spoke.
âNothing to be worried about.â
It was their words that allowed Phoenix to relax.
âWell if Apollo says itâs nothing to be worried over, then Iâm sure itâs all fine,â He said, the teasing in his tone reassuring the others in turn.
He straightened as Trucy let go, smiling as he went.
âAlright then, is everyone good to get back to work?â
Athena pumped a fist, Trucy grinned, and Apollo crossed his arms over his chest with a smile.
That was answer enough for Phoenix.
âGreat. Letâs get back to it!â
And back into the quiet sort of comfortable the office had previously been in they slipped.
As Trucy returned to practicing card tricks, Athena glanced at Phoenix, pretending to be tidying her desk as she did.
She couldnât say for sure if Trucy was right about one thing⌠if Phoenix really did see his Trucy as a daughter later in their relationship rather than sooner. But as she watched him pull the locket out of his pocket to look at the picture inside, she was confident Trucy had been right about the other.
He would always come back for her.

Matt Giguereâs Top 25 DS Games
Itâs strange to think Nintendo, once again, had to prove themselves in the handheld space after the Game Boy and Game Boy Advance handily served every bit of competition it faced. Yet in 2004, the Nintendo DS faced an uphill battle to show that having the best and fastest hardware wouldnât necessarily result in the best sales. 16 years and 154 million units later, the legacy of the DS is strong, evident in the deluge of smartphone and mobile games that rely on a touch interface. Itâs a shame Nintendo and other publishers are not being better stewards to their catalogues of games as there are still many that are only playable on the original hardware, and few seem to make the jump to the current set of consoles and computers. Still, it is easy to find an original DS that works and there are still plenty of cheap titles to pick up. Hereâs a selection of my favorite games to hit the handheld.
1. Meteos
Can a puzzle game top Tetris? Â Honestly, thanks to the minds of Tetsuya Mizuguchi and Masahiro Sakurai, Meteos manages to blast past the mesosphere and comes the closest to a space rendezvous with the original falling brick puzzler. What makes it fun to play? While it can get rather hectic and fast paced, the touch screen makes matching three or more pieces a cinch. Blasting off these little âmeteosâ using rocket propulsion and fighting against the forces of gravity creates a very addictive hook with some variety that keeps it from being stale. It is a simple and effective puzzle game that showcases why a touch-based interface can work for some games better than what button presses can do. Add in easy to use single cart multiplayer and the single-player Star Trip mode to keep you sharp, and you have a puzzle game for the ages. Â
2. Elite Beat Agents
Imagine being stuck in an impossible situation, like having to face down a runaway golem, or sneak into a corporate office using your ninja powers? Who do you call to help in this situation? This is a job for the Elite Beat Agents: A government agency that cheers you on to the grooves of radio hits from the â70s to the â00s. The idea of playing a rhythm game where you have to tap and slide didnât sit well with my snobbish DDR and Guitar Hero ways. Why tap a screen when I can âdanceâ and ârock out?â Little did I know this was just as valid a way to feel the music and beat out a jam, and soon after I was feeling the hand cramps of too much furious tapping while I carefully made sure I didn't âOuendanâ the bottom screen. Thereâs a very strange energy to this game that permeates from the different scenarios to the beat of the soundtrack. I might not dig every song served in the playlist, but I canât help but try and top my score on Sk8er Boi for the 100th time! With all the trouble in the world, maybe we need more games (and people) like EBA these days.
3. Advance Wars: Dual Strike
Oh Advance Wars, your time was too short over here. But hey! At least we were given a great first outing on the DS, and all these years later, it is still a blast to play. Using the second screen to quickly glance at unit and area information is a welcomed addition, but Second Front battles add a new dimension to the core strategy game that really sells the top screen. Throw in all the CO Tag Powers and a map editor built for a touch interface, and itâs hard to see how anything can top this release of Advance Wars. But seriously Intelligent Systems and Nintendo, please give the franchise one more shot! Â
4. Tetris DS
Yeah, it's Tetris. But also, itâs Tetris! Maybe it is one of those âskips a generationâ thing, as you can kind of plot the best versions of portable Tetris are on the GameBoy, the DS, and the Switch. Tetris DS may be sacrilegious to some with its hold options and infinity spin technique, but this is what I think makes this version unique beyond the various modes and dual screen support. To me it creates a faster version of Tetris that is easy to get into, but can be a fun challenge to master. The addition of Nintendo-themed boards to go with the different modes of play not seen in other versions also adds to this unique addition to the Tetris line. Looking for a version of Tetris with more to do than just the base game? Tetris DS has the most to offer. Â
5. Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars
This game should have been a hit. Maybe the marketing hyped this game up too much? Maybe more people were spoiled by the full 3D realization of the GTA formula with GTA 3? Maybe the music wasnât the same without the radio hits? Maybe if the synthwave revival had hit the scene sooner it wouldâve helped? Whatever the case, this is a gem of a GTA game. While it misses out on the full production of the home console and PSP âStoriesâ line (I think full voice acting would have helped this version of the game immensely,) just about every aspect of the big brother version is here in this miniature version of Liberty City. From hijacking cars to outrunning the fuzz, this top-down 3D GTA gives a full helping of the open world mayhem the series is known for. The bottom screen minigames can get a touch annoying, but they hardly get in the way like many other games on the DS. Rounding out this game is the drug peddling economy minigame. Not only does it fit the setting and overall style of the game, but  it enables a great opportunity for emergent gameplay to unfold with big risks and big gains. It baffles me* how Rockstar wonât develop this further in their gamesâ single player campaigns. Check it out, as itâs still rather cheap on the DS and is also available on the PSP and most modern mobile devices. *Iâm clearly ignoring the real money cash flow of online microtransactions. 6. Kirby: Canvas Curse
7. Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin
8. Mario Kart DS
9. Looney Tunes: Duck Amuck
10. Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia
11. WarioWare Touched!
12. Star Fox Command
13. Mario and Luigi: Bowserâs Inside Story
14. 999: Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors
15. Final Fantasy IV
16. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney
17. Brain Age: Train Your Brain in Minutes a Day!
18. The World Ends with You
19. Professor Layton and the Curious Village
20. Mega Man XZ
21. Pokemon Black/White
22. Photo Dojo
23. Style Savvy
24. New Super Mario Bros
25. The Legend of Zelda: The Phantom Hourglass

just finished aa4 and really liked it! quick thoughts:
-apollo has quickly become one of my favorite characters in aa! he really struck that sweet spot between admirable and endearing for me--a hardworking, quick-thinking young man, who grew up as an orphan and clawed his way up to success and a new family in the wrights, and whoâs also unrelentingly snarky, canât whisper for his life, is terrified of heights, and cries over people that he hardly knows. what a dork, i love him. i think they leaned a little heavily on the âgreenhornâ aspect of his personality-- quite a few moments where there were things i had figured out but wasnât allowed to do anything with until another character jumped in and was like âapollo u sweet summer child THIS is the answerâ. also i spoiled myself a little and i know that the next two games have âtraumatize apolloâ as a running theme so a little apprehensive and hoping they at least develop his character well or smth
-mixed feelings about the âperceiveâ mechanic bc narratively itâs cool as hell but it was frustrating to crawl through the text looking around for a very slight change in the zoomed-in sprite, especially if it wasnât clear what theyâre fibbing about which is very often. had to use a guide on those parts pretty often. also itâs just like âhey you were twitching! youâre obviously hiding something!â âoh gee you caught me iâll spill the beansâ like i feel like it couldâve been a little more subtle or gradual, idk.
- love apollo and trucyâs relationship so much!! their banter is so cute and funny and they pull off the straight man/funny man routine really well. ik nick and maya have a similar thing but the vibes were just different, for some reason. they had very strong sibling vibes (even before the reveal), which i loved. them being half-siblings was pretty contrived (like a lot of things in this game and this series lmao) but i dont really mind too much
-on a related note, why canât they know that theyâre siblings. whenâs the âright timeâ to tell them. why canât they just reunite with their mother who has her memories back and loves them. phoenix wh
-on another related note i can understand how jaded and disillusioned phoenix got after he got disbarred but i honestly didnât like the whole âmysterious cryptic mentor playing 4d chessâ schtick that the game pulled. it feels ooc, especially considering you briefly play as present-day him in the final case and his internal monologue doesnât seem too different from original trilogy phoenix, or at least the phoenix you see before disbarment in the final case (although i was rly invested in finishing up the case and wasnât paying that much attention to phoenixâs characterization specifically, so i mightâve missed stuff). phoenixâs arc of growth was great and complete in t&t and it feels like they just...gave him a whole new personality. also phoenix goes back to being a lawyer in the next two games...does he just revert back to being regular ol phoenix? idk, maybe iâm missing some stuff right after my first playthrough but it just felt weird.
-plot was really convoluted and contrived even for ace attorney (havent played aa5 or 6 yet, so idk if it gets worse). lamiroir just happened to be apollo and trucyâs mom, if zak had just been frank with phoenix and given the original diary page to him OR valant hadnât tampered with the crime scene this whole thing couldâve been avoided. why did zak want to take down phoenix in poker to the extent of planting cards on him to make it look like he cheated when phoenix was the one who defended him in court and heâs the one taking care of his daughter??
-way too many flashbacks to things that happened 5 real life minutes ago
-g u i t a r â s s e r e n a d e
-kind of wish they had done more with trucy. i liked her but i feel like there was potential, especially since the game implies that sheâs putting on a brave front for apollo, and i wish they had expanded on that a little more. like....her birth father who had been presumed dead for years ends up being alive right up until mere months before the reveal. sheâs the one that ends up delivering the forged evidence into phoenixâs hands as a child, even though she was completely unaware of it at the time. she and phoenix latch onto each other pretty quickly, which was very cute, but we get little insight to how she thinks of her biological father, who we can tell she loved and misses but not much else. maybe iâm just digging for angst, idk, but it still felt like there couldâve been more. (also i really wanted more phoenix-being-a-dad content!! be a dad to ur daughter sir!!)
-klavier was pretty good! it was refreshing to have a prosecutor that wasnât after âperfectionâ or had a vendetta against defense attorneys/the protag, but he still managed to come off as a competent opponent. his whole rockstar persona was very cheesy but i liked it lol. (also really hilarious to me that the third case starts with him giving discounted tickets to trucy and apollo, his opponents in actual legal court) also i knew people shipped him and apollo but i wasnât expected the game to be so forthright with it. like how else are you supposed to interpret klavier saying âiâm used to being inspected by the ladies but this is the first time ive felt like this with a manâ????
-ema skye!!! loved her and glad to see her in a spotlight role but it was just kind of sad seeing her perpetually grumpy. ik people didnât like that there were so many forensic touchpad/mic minigames but i didnât really mind it, they were kinda fun if sometimes a little tedious
-i for sure thought that valant had been directly involved with the murder in turnabout serenade (my initial theory was that valant was masquerading as daryan during set 3 while daryan shot letouse, which was why 2nd guitar was off during the recording). also i hated daryanâs hair, why does he have a military grade skunk torpedo on his head,
-wright anything agency adopt vera challenge
-this has already gone on long enough so tl;dr solid 7.5/10 would play again once i forget what happens a little bit
#my echo chamber#long post#wow this ended up being a lot longer than i expected#now let me dispense my thoughts that nobody cares about into the void of tumblr....be well.....#ace attorney#aa4#ace attorney spoilers#i liked this game a lot but i think og trilogy still has my heart#characters were great here but i really miss maya and gumshoe and edgeworth and original flavor phoenix....#been watching press buttons and talk's playthrough of it while i do work and it's honestly golden

Mini Fanfic #496: About Last Night (Ace Attorney)
2:29 a.m. at the Streets
Ema: (Sighs While Walking) This night could've been a lot better......(Turns to Klavier) Yo, Fop! You still got Justice behind your back?
Klavier: (Carrying an Already Asleep Apollo from Behind his Back) Yep.
Apollo: 'Zzzzzzzzzzz'
Klavier: (Chuckles Lightly) Honestly, I still couldn't believe our Herr Forehead here was such a lightweight drinker.
Ema: (Rolls her Eyes) I believe it. Knew we shouldn't let the dork join us on club night......Or even go to one at all tonight....
Klavier: Oh come now, Ema. There's no need to be upset here. Let alone towards Herr Forehead. He just wanted to spend time with us for the night is all. And at the very least, the night didn't get a lot worse than we thought it would.
Ema: True....... Plus, at least we know now not to never bring him to a bar again. Or anywhere near the drinks and bars.....(Pulls out her Phone to Make a Call)
Klavier: Making a call there, my dear?
Ema: Yep. I wanted to let the fireball know that her man is safe and sound.
Klavier: (Chuckles Lightly) I'm assuming you're talking about Fraulein Cykes, yes?
Ema: You assumed correct, Fop. (Already On the Phone, Waiting on a Call)
???: ('Yawns') Hello?.....
Ema: (Eyes Widened in Terror Once She Realize Who She's Really Calling) Shit!.....
Klavier: What? What is it?
Ema: (Turns to Klavier While Whispering to Him) I called Trucy by mistake!
Klavier: (Eyes Widened in Surprised) Oh.......
Trucy: Ema? Is that really you?
Ema: (Turns Back Around and Answers the Call) Oh! Uhhh.... H-Hey there, kiddo! How's the night treat ya?
Trucy: Okay. I guess...Is everything okay?
Ema: Y-Yeah! Of course! Sorry about that. I've must've called you by mistake.
Klavier: (Whisper into Ema's Ear) Ema, are you sure wise to not tell her about Here Forehead current state?
Ema: (Glares at Klavier While Whispering Back to Him) Whaddya talking about, Fop?! If course, we can't tell about what happened to Justice here late night!
Trucy: Wait. (Immediately Starts Getting Worried on the Other Line) W-What about Polly?! Is he okay?! H-He isn't hurt, is he?!!
Ema: (Damnit! She heard us!!) (Immediately Starts to Lie) P-Polly? What about him,m (Chuckles Awkwardly) Honestly. I have no idea what's you're talking about here, Truce. Really.
'Silence'
Ema: Trucy?
Klavier: (Whispers into Ema's Ear Lot more Silently) You.....think she would believe that or......
Trucy: Ema.......
Ema: Y-Yeah? W-What wrong?
Trucy: Are you lying to me right now?
Ema: Whaaaat? (Chuckles Awkwardly) N-No way! That's crazy!....Why would you think that?
Trucy: Cause you're showing a lot more emotions than you should right now.
Ema: (Already Starting to Sweat Bullets) T-That because I'm genuinely happy! I-I mean... What's wrong with having emotions here, huh?
Trucy: Nothing. There's nothing with having at all.
Ema: See? Isn't that-
Trucy: In fact, if you ask me, I'm showing a lot of emotions in this phone call right now....
Ema: O-Oh! I-Is that so?
Trucy: That's right. I'm tired, confused, worried, and about to go apeshit if you don't tell me what's going on with Polly in couple of seconds!
Ema: (Gasps While Being Very Surprised by Trucy's Sudden Profanity) Trucy!
Trucy: Don't you "Trucy" me, Ema Skye!! Don't think I didn't notice you whispering to Mr. Gavin on the other line a second ago! Speaking of which, Hello, Mr. Gavin!!
Klavier: (Taken Back a bit by Trucy Calling his Name) Oh! I umm....('Clears Throat') G-Good evening, Fraulein-
Trucy: NO TIME FOR FORMAL GREETINGS!!!
Klavier: O-Okay. W-Whatever you say.....(Chuckles Awkwardly till he Went Silent in a bit of Fear)
Trucy: ('Sighs Heavily') Could you guys please tell me what going on with Polly already?! Or do you want me to go out and find out myself?!
Ema: Okay! Okay! We confess! ('Sighs in Defeat') We took Apollo to a night club earlier tonight and....well....he may or may not gotten himself drunk right about now....You know...since he was a lightweight and everything.....
'Dead Silence'
Ema: Trucy? A-Are you still there? H-Hello?
Klavier: (Whispers to Ema's Ear Yet Again) You think she didn't take the news too well?
Ema: Probably not, Fop.....
Trucy: (Took a Deep Breath on the Other Line)
Ema: Trucy?
Trucy: Okay.....Let me get this straight.....And please.....do try to correct me when I'm wrong.
Ema: Y-Yeah. Okay, sure.
Trucy: Now, you mean to tell me that you two invited Polly into a Night Club......AND LET HIM GET DRUNK?!!
Ema: ...................When you put it like that, it almost sounds like it's a bad-
Trucy: IT IS A BAD THING!!! WHAT THE HELL WERE YOU TWO THINKING?!!!
Ema: Trucy, I know you have every right to be mad at us, but could you please try to calm down a little?
Trucy: ('Sighs Heavily') Fine....Sorry for yelling.....You could just please tell me where Polly is right now?
Ema: It's fine, kiddo. We totally get where you're coming from in all of this. Really.
Klavier: (Smiles a Little) And don't you worry about Herr Forehead. He already tired himself out to sleep on my back.
Trucy: ('Sighs in Relief') Oh thank goodness......
Ema: Hey, Trucy?
Trucy: Yeah?
Ema: Listen, I completely get it if you're still upset with us and everything, but...Please don't take it out on Justice. He just wanted to spend time us....Sure that in it of itself got him drunk to sleep, but... It's the truth.
Trucy: (Facepalms While Sighing on the Other Line) Oh my gosh...... Pollllly.....Why are you trying so hard to impress people?!
Ema: That's what I wanna know.....
Klavier: Ema.
Ema: What? It's the truth.
Trucy: Okay. Where are guys at right now?
Ema: Already out in the streets. We're taking Apollo back to his apartment right about-
Trucy: Wait!
Ema: Hm?
Trucy: I want you guys to take him back to agency.
Ema: You.....Sure you want us to do that?
Trucy: Yeah. Daddy had already left for the weekend to do an important case and I wanna make sure Polly's gonna be okay for myself.
Ema: Well, Alright then. Guess we're heading our way to the agency right now.
Trucy: Good. I'll let you guys in once you get here. I'll even let Athena know about everything that happened in the morning.
Ema: Sounds like a plan.
Trucy: Oh and Ema?
Ema: Yeah?
Trucy: ......Thank you and Mr. Gavin so much for taking care of my Polly tonight.
Ema: (Chuckles Lightly) No problem, Truce. Justice may be an idiot sometimes, but.... (Looks Back and Smiles a Little Towards a Sleeping Apollo) He's our idiot. We always got his back.
Next Morning at the Everything Wright Apartment
Apollo: (Groans While Slowly but Surely Trying to Wake Up) (God I hate migraines....Just what the hell happened last night?) (Finally Starts to Open his Eyes.....only to see....)
Trucy: Polly!
Apollo: (Yelps While Getting Himself Fallen off from the Sofa by Mistake) What the....(Look up and See Some Very Familiar Faces Staring Down on Him) Trucy?.... Guys?
Trucy: (Pouts Towards Apollo While Having her Hands on her Hips) You have a lot of explaining to do, mister!
Apollo: (Look Around the Room in Confusion) Wait. How did I get here?
Ema: Yeah....Fop and I was supposed to bring you back to your apartment last night, but your little sister here ask us to bring you here instead.
Apollo: Last night- (Eyes Widened Once he Immediately Realized what Ema was Talking About) Oh dear God....I was drunk that night, wasn't I?
Klavier: (Chuckles Lightly) You're starting to catch on quickly Herr Forehead. We're so proud.
Apollo: Shut up.....
Trucy: Alright. Enough fooling around. All I wanna know is why my Big Brother Polly got himself drunk at a club last night!
Apollo: You guys told her?!
Ema: Hey. In our defense, I did call her phone by mistake.
Klavier: (Shrugged) It's true.
Apollo: ('Sigh') Okay. Be honest with me here. How drunk was I that night?
Ema: (Smirk a Little) Drunk enough to fall yourself to sleep.
Klavier: I had to carry you on my back and everything.
Apollo: (Facepalms) Ah geez...
Trucy: Apollo!
Apollo: (Looks Back up to Trucy While being Startled) Y-Yeah, sis?
Trucy: If you know for a fact that you're a lightweight drinker, then why on Earth did you let yourself get drunk last night? Explain yourself, young man!
Apollo: ('Sigh') Look, I just wanted to able to spend time Ema and Klavier that night.....(Blushes a Little in Embarrassment) Even if it means getting myself intoxicated afterwards.....
Ema: Knew it.
Klavier: (Smiles Softly) If you really wanted to spend time with us, we wouldn't mind doing anything else, my friend.
Ema: Yeah. We could've just called up Wocky and play some Mario Party at your place.
Apollo: True.... But I thought that maybe if I'd go to the club with you guys, it would be another thing we could do other than just having lunch together and playing games. Sorry if I'd cause you two trouble......
Ema: Eh don't worry about it. As long as you're fine, it's already good for me.
Klavier: We had great time with you last night, Herr Forehead. Despite everything that happened afterwards.
Apollo: (Smiles a Little) Yeah......I had fun with you guys too.
Trucy: Well, I'm glad things are settledwith you three....Cause starting today, I hereby grounding you three weeks top, Apollo Justice!!
Apollo: (Eyes Widened in Disbelief) WHAT?! T-Trucy, you can't do that! I'm older than you!
Trucy: That maybe the case, but I'm daddy's little princess! And as such, my orders are sometimes absolute!
Apollo: (Facepalms) You can't be serious.....
Trucy: (Crosses her Arms) As serious as I can be. Plus, I already told daddy about what happened a few minutes ago and he agreed that you should be punished. So there you go.
Ema: (Gives Apollo a Teasing Smirk) Wow, Justice. Getting grounded by your own boss and sister? Really isn't your day now, is it?
Apollo: ('Sighs in Defeat') Whatever. I'll accept the punishment....I'm sorry for worrying you, Truce. Again.
Trucy: (Gives Apollo a Loving Hug) Polly, you know the only reason I'm being hard on you right now is because you mean the world to me. I love you.
Apollo: (Ruffles the top Trucy's Hair) I know you do, kiddo. I love you too-
'SMASH'
Once the sound of a kicked door starts coming into multiple eardrums, everyone in the living room turns to the door and see that it was none other than a furious Athena Cykes.
Athena: Apollo.......
Klavier: (Chuckles Awkwardly) Oh wow. Would you look at the time? W-We wish we could stay and chat, but I just remembered that we had quite a schedule today. If you excuse us....(Quick Makes his Way to the Door with Ema Follow Pursuit) We will see you later, Herr Forehead!
Ema: (Look Back at Apollo) We'll text you later.....If you could survive that is. (Left out the Door)
Athena: (Immediately Closes the Door Behind her Before Glaring Down at her Boyfriend) So.....What is this I hear about you getting yourself drunk last night?
Apollo: (Already Terrified) Tiger......I can explain.
Athena: You better!
And with that, Apollo gets scolded by his fireball of a girlfriend for the rest of the morning. Followed by receiving a nice, relaxing cuddle session afterwards with her and Trucy together.

itâs been a while since i posted about aa but i just finished soj in its entirety tonight. hereâs my new list so far
i still have to give thoughts on cases 4 5 and dlc so thatâll be under a cut. spoilers!
6-4: this was such a filler case, almost shamefully so. i donât know why they thought they could manage to do this in the 4th case when every game with 5 cases has been pretty consistent about making the 4th case plot relevant, sometimes literally just a preamble to case 5. so yeah i think this one was kinda ass
the two things it had going for it: one, athena. in 6-2 i actually got confused about why i ever liked her, because in that case she felt like she was just acting the part of the Peppy Teen Girl With a Rowdy Streak that makes up almost every assistant character. But then as SOON as she started bantering with Simon in 6-4 i was like âoh, THATâS why i liked her!â was nice to take control of her again.
two, uendo toneido. while i donât think you can say the DID was portrayed with quite the necessary respect or kindness, it was handled better than iâve seen other media handle it-- at least itâs not completely demonized. other people have written more on that in better detail so iâm not really the judge, but the basic point is that this witness was mad fun to read, and even the dumb jokes like the changing number of floor cushions were entertaining. thus why this case is in the âhard carried by one side characterâ tier.
especially since there was like nothing else going on. no connection to the main plot, only two other characters besides uendo, and for some reason the clown tits girl was here instead of the magic show case (and to be honest, she wasnât enjoyable for me even BEFORE she did the standard aa female villain thing and changed her speech pattern as soon as she fell under suspicion). just a weird, nothing case stuck right around the point aa games usually enter endgame. And especially weird because...
6-5 part 1: inexplicably there are two separate cases in the final chapter and each gets one day of investigation and trial. such a weird setup, and it really shouldnât work... but i think it kinda barely does. barely. it would still have been better to split it into case 4 and case 5 though.
i have a hard time articulating much on the first case bc it sort of blends together for me. the main thing is that the concept of it being a civil case where apollo and phoenix face off is really good. it was a good change of pace, even though you knew it was gonna be a murder somehow anyway. sarge was reasonably nice, i guess, paul atishon had some good animations and quirks (my favorite being when he tries to just walk away from the stand to avoid answering a question), and the logic of the actual murder was good enough.
but i especially got those strong âoh this is a FINAL case!â vibes during the segment in the cave, and that added so much to it even if not much of it was relevant in the first half of the case. the adventure feel reminded me of some of the (out of context bc i still havent played it) scenes i know from 3-5, which is a good association to invoke imo. and it did a lot to give apollo and dhurke time to bond.
speaking of which, dhurke, holy shit. what a KING. i donât think iâve ever liked a dad character in ace attorney this much. heâs so genuine and like down to earth that itâs impossible not to start liking him and believe how much he cares for his sons. the bit where he rescued apollo from the cave flood... i felt it in my heart
6-5 part 2: let me just get this out of the way: gaâran sucks. her design after she goes full evil is so bad, sheâs so malicious that itâs immediately obvious sheâs going to be the culprit, her breakdown is ridiculous and just embarrassing to watch, and inga had already established way more charisma as a villain when he did the âthose were orders of execution actuallyâ bit in 6-3. with that said,
i actually liked it for the most part. the spirit channeling stuff was excellent imo-- they probably use it to similar or greater effect in 3-5 but as someone who again has not played that, i was surprised and almost impressed by how well it was applied. maya was relevant for something! it feels like itâs been ages!
rayfa was a little underutilized, i think-- her moment of determination where she stops letting gaâran have control over her was alright but it fell flat bc it didnât have any weight during the moment. i kept hoping she would like, wordlessly take of her shawl and do the little verbal preamble to the divination seance while gaâran kept yelling at her to stop, but no, the script canât be good like that, i guess. and since she didnât get to be the investigation assistant for long, none of her charm in that role carried through.
but DHURKE!! oh my god! in a game almost devoid of emotional impact, his involvement in this case really hit. the way they painstakingly animated his death, the scene where he makes a promise with maya, and then the weight of knowing in hindsight that everything he did in the first part of the case was after heâd already died and just wanted to see his son again before passing on for real....... it hurt. i felt something during that section. this case would also be hard carried by him if not for the fact that i really liked the murder bits.
amara was good too--liked how they made her suspiciously serene and accentuated it with the lightning strikes to make her look like a hidden murderer character about to reveal herself, only to walk it back and confirm she was being forced to act that way. i thought it worked. nahyuta was boring though, iâm sorry-- i get the motivation with having to be a bastard bc his sister and mom were basically held hostage, but the only time i found him compelling in that mess was the bit where he removed his one fingerless glove and revealed he still has the dragon tattoo. that was it. athena was also completely unused the whole case (not even a single mood matrix? really?) and trucy one again went without any role of importance.
the ending also... yknow, a friend said they had to end it this way bc they never figured out what they were going to do with apollo (since following up on what they started in aa4 clearly wasnât an option???) and just threw him on a bus to get rid of him. i agree with that-- he really feels thrown to the side, and with that i think trucyâs officially stranded with no hope of any character advancement. and the way they ended the game with phoenix and lamiroir deciding âyeah, maybe NOW we should finally tell those two theyâre relatedâ honestly felt insulting lol
but maybe the dlc case will let things go out on a high note...?!
6-6: it was okay.
it wouldâve worked pretty well as a filler case in an older aa-- honestly i think itâd be one of the better filler cases, certainly worth replacing the shitty ones like 2-3 or 3-3 or, hey, 6-4. but whether iâd say it was worth paying for... eh.
the time travel conceit was done well enough, i think. the way they tied it back to sorin and pierceâs backstories was nice, and the twist about having two receptions was good, although they needed to treat that as a real twist with much more gravity. when the truth comes out it just feels like âoh of course thatâs what happenedâ rather than a big surprise worthy of the Confessing the Truth theme. itâs sort of important because the case becomes a lot less interesting when you take out the time travel element.
far as characters are concerned, i think they needed more side characters to sell the whole thing-- another sprocket family member or another servant of the household. it felt a little limited-- sorin and pierce are pretty good witnesses and i like their quirks and their secrets, but the only alive woman (ellen) has very few traits and no connection to the deeper story of the case, so she falls really flat. the old aa characters didnât add much- maya and edgeworth were just there for fanservice, ema didnât get to do much other than acknowledge for the first time in years that sheâs a big edgeworth fan, and larry is annoying as hell like he always is.
and oh my god i actually forgot while i was writing that, how they put in athena and trucy but only used them for brief slapstick where trucy would try to set athena on fire and shit. again-- no mood matrix? couldnât even try once to fit those two characters into something?
i did like pierceâs transformation into his surgeon form though-- that was really cool. loved him doing surgery on a robot, taking xrays of the lawyers, and his breakdown was fantastic-- he would make a really good culprit if they didnât whiff the last bit of pathos at the end. i donât think he shouldâve been aiming for revenge on sorin; it would have hurt much more if he was still loyal to the guy and never intended for him to be in danger, but the final âwhyâd you do it?â talk in the trial just felt flat and one-note, much like the one in 6-4.
... so thatâs spirit of justice! not a super positive experience but iâm happy to say itâs done. as much as i want to go and replay dgs, i think when i do go back to ace attorney iâll be replaying the trilogy for the first time since high school
