Takaraâs Hero Academia Season 2 Episode 5 [Eijiro Kirishima/OC] [Female!Aizawa/Hizashi]
Hey, guys!! Sorry for taking forever on this chapter! I feel really bad this took so long, but I do have a reason; my phone gave out on me and it took a while to get a new one cus I wanted to get my phone repaired but then the people said I needed to just replace it cus it was an iPhone 6 Iâve had for a few years, and then I tried to do an update to get my cellular data back, but then it said I still needed to update my phone to get my cellular data back after I did the update, and yada yada no one cares.
Bottom line, I have a Google Pixel now and I am really liking it so far. Now, letâs stop wasting time and get to the story, okay?! :)
Okay so hereâs the Masterist for the Series (sorry I forgot to do that when I posted this lol)! And now for the taglist!Â
Once again, before I get to that, I have to remind everyone that Hiyoko and Ryuji Tiechida belong to @elite-guard-hardygal !! My bestie is just being incredibly sweet and awesome and letting me use them for a cameo/side-character thing. Love you,  galfriend!!Â
Okay so Iâm also tagging @dailyojiromashirao , @souskena , and @fandoms-fandoms-everywhere99 . They are awesome people and I genuinely love hearing their (and everyone elseâs) feedback.Â
Also, real quick: I just saw that my blog has reached 100 followers!! Thatâs insane!!! Like, literally! Anyway, letâs get to the story for real this time!Â
Hope you all enjoy this chapter!!Â
God Bless and Good Day!Â
~The Lupine Sojourner
(Looky! I made a gif!!)
âYou better hope your stupid boyfriend doesnât mess this up for us, Yamada.â Hiyoko snaps, crossing her arms, nodding toward Katsukiâs team. Â
I blink, looking back at Katsukiâs team despite myself. âWhat?â I ask, raising a brow, then blush a little and scoff. âHeâs not my boyfriend!â I then decide to change topics. âJust because weâre in the same class doesnât mean-â I catch myself and clear my throat. â-we have more important things to discuss, like Quirks and strategy.â Hiyoko sighs. I blink. Did she always have cat ear-looking whisps of hair? And whisker-like markings on her face? Guess so...and she has a medial cleft that adds to the cat-like thing sheâs got going on. I suppose thatâs also part of her Quirk. Huh...
âFine. Obviously, I got cat-like looks. And I have a solar panel on my back that I can use to store up energy and release it in claws of hardened light. I can use just my fingertips or my toes or both if I want. I can shoot out beams from these three middle fingers,â she holds up the three middle fingers on her left hand and I notice sheâs wearing a glove made to fit over the fingers, with metal claws on the fingertips. âbut it hurts a lot to do that and it drains my stored energy to almost nothing. Thatâs about it.â I nod, ignoring the odd, knowing look Ryuji gives me like he saw through my facade of not caring what team Eijiro ended up on. I clear my throat
âI can go next. I have two Quirks, actually; I control earth and water. Not great at earth, but I can track people using vibrations in the ground, so we wonât be caught off guard. Water is much easier, but my Quirk uses my blood sugar, so I canât do it forever, and earth takes more blood sugar. Thatâs about it, really, besides having about a 6-meter radius.â I turn to Ryuji. âWhatâs your Quirk, Ryuji?â Ryuji scratches the back of his neck.
âWell, nothing fancy like yours. I can read peopleâs emotions, and if I directly tell the person what theyâre feeling, it intensifies the feeling. And when I do that, itâs kind of like manipulating them into feeling more than they normally would.â Hiyoko scoffs.
âYeah. Super annoying when he just spouts off therapist garbage at you because he can tell what youâre feeling.â Ryuji sighs, choosing not to rise to his step sisterâs bait.
âPlus, I canât turn it off. Itâs not really my fault, Hiyoko-nee.â I nod. Oh geez. Despite not being able to turn it off, his Quirk is kinda cool!
âDude, thatâs pretty cool!â I reply, smiling. Ryuji smiles, probably sensing my genuine interest in his Quirk.
âThanks.â He turns to Chiharu. âWhat about you, Chiharu?â She gestures to her ears.
âWell, I got the wolf Quirk, like Ami, and I can do a really loud bark, but it takes my breath away to do it. And thatâs pretty much it.â I nod.
âThatâs awesome!â I praise, smiling at her. She grins back.
âI know.â She teases with a wink. âAnyway, um, I know youâre in class 1-A, and Ryujiâs in my class in the General Studies course, but which class are you in, Hiyoko?â
âIâm in Class 1-B.â Hiyoko replies, crossing her arms. âI wanted to get into 1-A, but it didnât turn out that way.â She seems pretty upset she didnât get into 1-A, so I smile at her.
âYou know, this whole rivalry between the hero classes is pretty stupid. Itâs not like we meant to be attacked by villains or whatever, and Katuski is the only asshole in my class. The rest are good people.â I then decide to change topics. âAnyway, letâs talk strategy real quick. I know Hiyokoâs the rider, but whoâs the front horse?â Ryuji puts his hand up.
âI know my sister the best out of the three of us and I am most likely the strongest- -no offense- -so Iâll be the front horse and Takara can be right and Chiharu will be left.â
I nod. âSounds good. Now, do we want to run or try to grab headbands?â Hiyoko scoffs.
âObviously, we need to play both defense and offense, Yamada. Defend the ones we have and grab a few more to ensure we place well. You all good with that?â I nod.
âPersonally, I am. As I said, with my vibration tracking, I can tell where the other teams are and if theyâre coming up in a blind spot. Plus, if I get some water Iâll be able to keep them at bay.â I then bite my lip. How was I gonna get more water? I doubt Oba will let me run to a vending machine or something. My range doesnât reach the stands, either. Shit!
I then decide to try to suck any water I can out of the ground. I find piping below but canât burst them as they are part of the school and I canât damage school property, right? Thereâs not much, but I do add a tiny bit of water to my stash and sigh. I also need food. This game will be rough...I just hope I do well.
I then feel a puddle a little ways away. Izuku is standing by it talking to Ochaco. I raise a brow, but pull the water to me sneakily. Unfortunately, it attracts Minetaâs attention. He looks over and motions for me to walk over. I flip him off and scoot closer to my teammates. We didnât have long till the game started, so we wait for the headbands to be passed out and we can get into formation. Hiyoko wraps the headband around her head and takes her shoes off.
âAlright, you guys. Donât screw this up!â Hiyoko calls as the countdown reaches thirty seconds. I smile.
âWe wonât. Just climb up already.â She does and Chiharu and I offer support as well as Ryuji. To our right stands a girl with black curly hair and a burly man with a weird bell-like face that looked like some odd helmet. I could see Izuku a little ways away, getting into position with his team.
âAlright! Thisâll be fun!â Chiharu purrs, snapping me back to reality, as we make final adjustments to positions and the timer rings. Oba stretches her arms.
âOh, goodie! Itâs time to get this party started!â She cheers.
âHey, hey! Look alive!, loveâ Dad prompts and I hear mom groan as she wakes up. I smile at the thought of Mom napping for fifteen minutes as I prepare to run wherever Hiyoko directs us. âAfter fifteen minutes to form teams and talk strategy, twelve teams are prepared to go head to head!â Dad cheers. Mom hums.
âIâm seeing some unexpected student combinations.â She notes. I bite my lip. Did she not approve of my team?
âCâmon! Everyone, get your hands in the air! Itâs time for an arena-pumping UA Battle Royale!â Dda continues. âLemme hear yah scream!â The crowd cheers eagerly and I bite my lip, trying not to think too much about the crowd watching. I just had to do my best and hope I make it to the next game. âOne final countdown before the game starts! 3...2...1âŠâ
âBegin!â Oba Nemuri calls, and itâs off. Hiyoko leans over toward me so we turn that way as we run, away from Izuku and the spotlight. Smart. It appears some other teams have our idea, running from the huge fight and focusing on keep their headbands and stealing if the chance arose. Once we get settled a bit away from everything, I see Izuku and his team take off into the sky!
âWhoa! What the hell?!â I exclaim, shocked. I then see a girl with pink hair in Izukuâs team and a backpack on Izukuâs back. The flying suddenly makes sense, if the pink haired girl is from the support course.
The support course students are allowed to bring their inventions, right? Thatâs the only way Izukuâs team could have those support items. I have to then focus on our team as we near the team with Tetsutetsu running after Izukuâs team, still airborne, and we nearly bump into Hagakureâs team, Kyoka sending her earphone jacks after Izuku, as well. Tokoyami is evidently on Izukuâs team because next second, Dark Shadow (Iâd seen the bird-like thing a few times while we were training. Heâs cool!) swats the jacks away.
âStupid bird!â Kyoka exclaims in frustration. I smirk as we run away. No one in our immediate area was concerned with any team but Midoriya. Thus, as a team with a red-headed girl as rider was distracted, I get Hiyokoâs attention and nod to the team.
âIâll grab their headband.â I whisper. Hiyoko nods, so I grab one of her two headbands off with a hook of water.
âHey, what the- -give that back!â I had to be careful how much I use my Quirk because I donât have unlimited blood sugar here, especially since I had to use my Quirk a lot in the obstacle course. Crap!
Wait, what the--Shojiâs with Mineta?! And Tsuyu?! Howâd that pervert manage that?! Well, with Shojiâs arms protecting them, itâs not worth trying to grab their headband, besides...we had a good amount of points. As long as we kept this number, at least for now, I think weâll be okay.
An explosion rattles the ground and I see Katsuki soaring after Izukuâs team, who had taken off again. âThat canât be legal!â I growl as Dark Shadow blocks an explosion. Hiyoko scoffs as Katsuki begins falling, only for Hanta to send tape out to grab him and yank him back to his team. I raise a brow. If they planned that out, theyâre really smart.
âIs that even allowed!?â Dad asks incredulously. Katsuki lands gracelessly on his teammatesâ arms, awkwardly shifting back into position and glaring at everyone.
âHe never touched the ground, so technically itâs okay.â Oba Nemuri replies. I roll my eyes.
âOh, hey, Yamada. Your boyfriendâs on that blonde assholeâs team.â I blush scarlet and refuse to look over, feeling more annoyed and irritated then I should that Hiyoko had brought up Eijiro being my boyfriend again after I told her he wasnât. I knew he was on Katsukiâs team already.
âHeâs not my boyfriend and I already knew that.â I growl.
âCalm down and focus on the game, Yamada. Hiyoko-Nee didnât mean anything.â Ryuji murmurs calmly. I take a breath. Eijiro...wasnât my boyfriend, much as Iâm beginning to want him to be...so there wasnât any point allowing myself to entertain that fantasy by responding everytime someone teases me about it.
Refocusing, I feel a two-person team rapidly gaining on us and slam a platform up as they leap at us. I smirk as they regain their footing and we keep moving. It was worth the loss in blood sugar.
âOoo-hoo-hoo! A nice defensive move from Tik- -I mean, um, Takara Yamada of Class 1-A! Nicely done!â Dad gushes and I blush, smiling widely in pride.
âHizashi, youâre supposed to be unbiased.â Mom chides.
âYeah, yeah. I know.â Dad replies, and I can practically pouting. That red-head is back all of a sudden, raring to grab her headband back.
âWe got a team coming up behind us, Hiyoko.â
âSo? Use your earth Quirk!â Hiyoko snaps back.
âI told you, controlling earth is harder.â I reply, trying not to get mad at her again. âWeâll just have to avoid them. I canât use either of my Quirks too much here. I didnât get any food after the race, so Iâm about half-empty right now.â I explain. Hiyoko huffs.
âFine. Thanks for the heads up.â She says, looking around and directing us away from the other teams. Ryuji grimaces a little and looks like somethingâs hurting him, but before I can ask whatâs wrong, Dadâs voice booms out over the crowd.
âNow, who wants to take a look at each teamsâ points so far?! Itâs been seven minutes since the game started, so letâs get those rankings thrown up on the screen!â I blink. Itâd been seven minutes already? I glance up and see that weâre between Shotoâs team and Team Kendo, whichever team that is, but...whoa⊠âHang on; this is an unexpected turn! Other than Midoriya, Class 1-Aâs not doing so hot!â I shrink a little in embarrassment. We werenât in the top four. Dad obviously saw that, so heâs probably talking about my team as well as the rest of 1-A. Crud⊠âEven Bakugo is losing!â I feel a tiny little bit better that Dad didnât single me out, but have to refocus as that red-head comes back around for another try at her headband. We barely manage to get away. Ryuji is definitely pained now, and heâs trying his best, but heâs not as fast as he used to be, so once weâve gotten fairly clear I decide to ask.
âHey, Ryuji, whatâs wrong?â He forces himself to look more normal.
âOh, itâs nothing. I just get headaches if there are too many intense emotions around me. The more intense, the more my head hurts.â I wince.
âEesh. Whoâs giving you a headache?â
âTeam Bakugo.â He replies. âSpecifically Bakugo.â I snort.
âYeah, Iâd imagine so. Heâs...very intense.â
âWhatever! Focus!â Hiyoko snaps, not noticing that two person team from before when they change course to come after us, and I look over my shoulder to see that the horse is a girl with ram-like horns and is bounding over the field on all fours, and the rider looks startled that Hiyoko used her claws. I couldnât do another earth wall, so I settle for warning Hiyoko.
âClose your eyes!â She hisses at us, then when we obey, she uses her sunlight as a kind-of stun ray, and we run past them, snatching a headband for good measure while they were reeling from the bright light. Before they recover, weâre a good distance away, dodging Tsuââs tongue and Minetaâs balls. I can hear him cackling and saying something, but I donât care enough to pay attention, focusing on dodging. Then, once weâre settled in the clear, Ryuji bites his lip to muffle a groan.
âCâmon, Ryu-boy, man up! Donât let your headache stop you!â Hiyoko growls. I frown.
âRyuji, is it getting worse?â I ask. He nods.
âYeah. Bakugoâs so pissed off right now, I canât focus! Itâs really ramping up my headache.â I bite my lip.
âHang on. Weâll try to put some dist- -holy shit youâre right!â I look over and flinch when I see Bakugoâs pure rage, directed at a boy I think is from Class 1-B.
âMonoma you ass, stop taunting him!â Hiyoko calls as we keep running.
âYou in his class or something?â I ask.
âYeah. Keep running!â Hiyoko replies. Despite the distance between our teams, I see the boy, âMonomaâ, not listening to Hiyoko, twirling what I assume is Katsukiâs headband on his finger and saying something to Katsuki, whoâs getting increasingly pissed off, much to his teammatesâ concern and fear. But âMonomaâ doesnât seem to mind. He simply keeps speaking, sealing his fate.
Honestly, I pity the guy. He picked the wrong person to-- I feel a team approach and I recognize it as Shotoâs team. Before I can even properly react to that, however, I suddenly feel very tingly, painfully so, and the pain increases as every muscle in my body seized up and I shook as electricity coursed through me. Damn Kaminari and his stupid electricity!
As our team reels back, groaning and aching, my feet suddenly feel icy cold. I try to walk to a warmer area, but I find my feet encased in ice. I blink. Shoto, you ass! Smart move, but still!
âShoto!â I growl. The teams in the vicinity are frozen to the ground.
âWould you look at that!â Dad calls excitedly. âHeâs stuck all those teams cold in their tracks!â I pout a little. Way to state the obvious, dad.
âBut only after Kaminari had immobilized the students using his electricity. In the obstacle course, Shoto was surprised at how many people avoided his attack. Heâs adapting his strategy.â Mom replies thoughtfully. I had to hand it to Shoto; he was a great strategist.
âNice commentary, hun!â Dad praises.
âYamada, melt the ice!â Hiyoko snaps. I look at her in shock.
âI canât! I use liquid water! I canât move ice! Defrosting it takes too much of my blood sugar, and I canât create ice, either. Iâm stuck with liquid water!â I reply.
âErgh! Fine! Cut the ice with the water, then! Hurry!â I nod and begin cutting us out. Chiharu also uses her bark on the ice around her feet, and that helped a lot.
In our haste to get out of the ice, however, I dropped my guard and didnât hear or feel a team approach till it was too late. Just as I was about to finish smashing a long-handled hammer of water against the last few spots of ice still stuck to us (Ryuji and Chiharu supporting Hiyoko while Chiharu regained her breath after her bark), I hear Hiyoko curse, feel the balance shift, and chuckling I knew all too well. I look up and see Shinsoâs team jogging away, Shinso fixing the headband around his neck. I glare at him, feeling angrier than I should at the fact that he stole one of our headbands. We were now below Team Tetsutetsu, and Hiyoko leans forward.
âShinso, you ass!â I bark, still feeling mad. âGet back here!â He just looks over his shoulder.
âItâs a competition, Takara.â He places emphasis on my first name, smirking as he does. âWe canât be too friendly here.â My eye twitches.
âShinso, you better giv- -waittaminute...you did not!â I just notice that Shinsoâs horses all look listless, eyes never closing...just blank slates. They were under the influence of his Quirk! That asshole brainwashed his teammates into being his horses, and then steals our headband?! No way!
There were less than six minutes left in the game, as I heard from Dad. We had to get our points back and then grab another headband in that time if we wanted to get into the final game. âYamada, this isnât the time to get upset!â Ryuji barks. âFocus!â I hardly heard him, whipping the water forward, but Ojiro was on Shinsoâs team and his tail shattered my formation. I stagger a little. âSee?â Ryuji adds. I grit my teeth, summoning the water back to me. Crap! I canât lose my cool! He was right! I take a breath.
âRyujiâs right, Takara. We have to get our points back, but if we lose our cool, thatâs not gonna happen.â Chiharu adds. âWhatâs got you so bent out of shape, anyway? You know this guy?â
âWe went to middle school together. Heâs my friend. Letâs just go.â We go after him, then Hiyoko leans toward a struggling team with a kinda werewolf-looking front horse. I see that they have more than two headbands and send the water to grab one as we pass. Now, all we had to do was get our headband back. In just over four minutes. I look over and see that Shinsoâs gotten a good distance away. âCâmon! We gotta moveâ I exclaim and race after my middle school friend. We got closer and closer just as I begin to feel woozy and lightheaded. Not good! I stagger on, though, gritting my teeth and pressing forward.
âHey, Yamada! You okay?â Ryuji asks.
âY-yeah, I...Iâm okay,â I mumble. âJust getting low. Running also takes energy and Iâm almost on empty here.â I explain further.
âIt would help if you didnât waste your energy on useless attacks.â Hiyoko snaps. I feel my cheeks heat in embarrassment.
âFine fine, whatever,â I reply. We didnât have a lot of time to catch up to Shinso.
âOnly one minute left!â Dad exclaims. âTeam Todoroki has cornered the 10 million point team and is poised to seize the ultimate prize!â I blink. Oh shit! Izuku better hope he can keep his headband for this last minute! âAt least, thatâs what I would have predicted five minutes ago!â Dad adds, laughing. I then shake myself and try to keep running, but the world was spinning now and it was hard to go in a straight line.
âGuys, Takaraâs getting worse! We gotta hurry!â Chiharu notes, voice rising in concern.
âThereâs less than a minute left! Hang on, Yamada!â Ryuji and Hiyoko reply almost perfectly in sync. I grit my teeth and keep running.
âUnbelievably, Team Midoriya has managed to avoid the ice master for the last half of the game!â Dad continues. I try to keep running, but itâs hard when your legs feel like theyâre dragging weights behind them. We run by a huge ice wall just as weâre about catch Shinso. Guess Shoto didnât...want...interruptions...gotta get the headband...Shinso...gotta...gotta focus! I reach out desperately with my water as the time ticks closer to ending. The world starts to go black and all I can think of doing is getting my team to the next game. As if from a distant tunnel, I hear Dad speaking and some commotion, but I canât focus on that.
Gotta...reach...a little...furtherâŠ.justâŠ
âTak- -â The world blank as I hear Oba call out the end of the game.
=#=#=#=#=
I come to on the ground, my team around me, looking at me in concern.
â--ney, I think, uh, Team Teichida is having some kind of difficulty there.â I distantly hear Dad saying.
âOne of the members passed out, it seems. She looks okay, but still. She shouldnât have pushed herself so hard.â Mom replies. I feel embarrassed that Mom and Dad were criticizing me in a roundabout way.
âAre you okay?â Chiharu asks, shaking my shoulders. I groan sluggishly. This was not how I wanted to make an impression. As long as we advance, though, itâs worth it.
â...Did...did I do it? Did we get the band?â I mumble, sitting up and holding my head.
â...um...wellâŠâ I pale and feel ready to pass out again. No, no, no!
âWe didnât make it to the final game?â Ryuji looks at me sympathetically. He knew how I was feeling.
âNo, but we tried our best. Thatâs what matters.â He says consolingly. It doesnât help at all. Hiyoko sighs.
âYeah, you tried damn hard, we all did, but it just...just wasnâtâŠâ She swallows. âIt didnât happen.â Shinso is suddenly behind my teammates, looking at me in concern. Chiharu and Ryuji scoot aside a little so he can help me up.
âYou shouldnât have pushed yourself till you passed out, idiot.â He says. I nod.
âYeah, but I wanted to get into the next game so bad...I didnât think straight.â
âHmm, and I probably shouldnât have targeted your team like I did. Sorry.â I shake my head, ignoring the way it made me feel dizzy.
âNo, no. Like you said, this is a competition. Congrats.â Iâd glanced up after he stole our headband and saw that he was in the top four. He nods.
âThanks. Letâs get you some food.â I shake my head again. I was feeling stronger now, and could make it to the vending machines alone. I...I needed to be alone right now. Luckily, it didnât seem like Mom and Dad had moved on from my passing out, so I was okay to sneak out and get food. I didnât want to face my parents right now.
âIâll be okay, Shinso. Iâm gonna go to the bathroom and get myself some food.â
âFood first, Yamada.â Shinso says, understanding why I declined his escort offer and walking away. Chiharu grabs my arm.
âYeah, letâs go.â I feel my emotions rising and pry her hand off reluctantly.
âI really appreciate it, Chiharu, but Iâll be fineâŠâ I assure her. âIâll be back in a sec.â I walk away before anyone can call me back and somehow manage to make it to the bathroom before the dam bursts and suddenly Iâm sitting on a toilet sobbing my heart out. I didnât make it into the final game...I failed.
What would Mom and Dad think?! Oh dear Lord I canât face them! Theyâre already disappointed, I know it! I tried my hardest and I failed! Thoughts lost all reason and sense at that point, flooding into me and back out again too fast for me to process. After what feels like forever, I manage to get myself together and shakily get to my feet, wobbling as I walk out and find a vending machine. Shinso was waiting.
âYou forgot your wallet, Takara.â He says, giving me a small smile over his shoulder. He knew what Iâd been doing. It wasnât like you couldnât look at me and tell Iâd been crying. I instinctively lean my head on his shoulder tiredly as he inserts a bill and presses the buttons for gummies. Those gummies had a lot of sugar. Good. He lets my head lull to the side while he grabs the gummies and hands them to me. He then walks over to the drink machine and gets himself and I water. He then walks over to a bench and I follow.
â...Thanks, Shinso.â I mumble around a few gummies as we sit down.
âDonât mention it. Now weâre even, right?â I chuckle.
âYeah, I guess so.â I lean on his shoulder again. âCan I stay here a sec? I donât want to go back yet.â He nods.
âNot too long, but yeah. Get yourself together.â I chuckle again and eat more gummies in silence. Why was he different than Eijiro? Why can I lean on his shoulder and not get super flustered?
Maybe itâs just that Shinsoâs been around too long. I never grew attracted to him romantically because he had been there since before I thought of boys like that. Heâd been my friend so long it was hard to picture him as anything else. Regardless, it was nice that he knew he didnât have to give me a pep talk. He just had to be here, letting me lean on his shoulder for a moment. This was a moment I needed to collect my thoughts and composure. Not getting into the final game had been a blow.
I tried as hard as I could, but couldnât quite get that headband we needed to get into the next game. That was that, no need to get caught up other thoughts.
âOh, good. Youâre feeling a little better.â Comes Ryujiâs voice as he rounds a corner. I smile at him.
âYeah, a little. Sorry for worrying you guys.â I mumble. Ryuji smiles.
âSorry I didnât stop you using your Quirk sooner. That last formation took too much out of you. I should have said something.â
âNah, Iâm the idiot that made the formation despite knowing it really wasnât my best move. I just really wanted to grab our headband.â Shinso sighs.
âAnd I really wanted to get into the next game.â I chuckle.
âI know. I donât hold it against you. Oh, by the way, this is Teichida Ryuji. Ryuji, this is Hitoshi Shinso, a guy I- -â
âWent to middle school with.â Ryuji interjects, smiling. âYou mentioned when he stole our headbands.â I frown, munching on the last of the gummies.
âOh. Really? Sorry.â He shakes his head.
âNo worries. You wanna head back or do you want me to bring someone here? You still seem pretty upset.â I sigh. While I did want to hug Eijiro right now, Iâm not sure I want him to know how badly I reacted. âI mean, um, I- -â Ryuji looks flustered, waving his hands around a little frantically.
âItâs fine, Ryuji. Um...I think Iâm okay to walk back, slow, but I donât really want everyone knowing what I did, soâŠâ
âYou look like shit, Takara. Thatâs not going away easily.â I sigh.
âThanks, ShinsoâŠâ Shinso points to the bathroom sign.
âGo back in there and splash your face with cold water a few times, donât rub your eyes, and pat it dry.â He then holds up my water bottle. âThen chug this.â I nod. He had probably done this before and knew how to hide it. I felt horrible I couldnât always help him when he got depressed and felt awful, but I do what I can.
I walk in and the water feels great on my face. I splash it a few times and gently wipe all the tear streaks away and pat my face dry. I feel better and come out.
Immediately, Shinso hands me my water. I drink it down and feel even better. I start walking back and side-hug Shinso when he catches up.
âI really appreciate this, Shinso.â I tell him. He nods.
âNo problem. Just donât mention it.â I nod in pretend sobriety.
âRiiight. Canât let anyone know you actually feel things.â I tease. He chuckles, knowing I didnât mean it literally.
âNo, not at all.â He replies, then leaves me to walk the rest of the way over to my teammates. I wasnât totally better but I was coming to grips with not being in the final game and I guess that was about all I can do at this point.
I canât change the past. I can only live with it.

Chapter 7
It was a week later when Shade was finally able to talk to Umbra again.
Unfortunately, she was still in the hospital. He had assumed sheâd be out by now.
Carrying a small potted plant, he made his way to the check-in counter. With a quick check-in and directions he made his way to the room she was being held in.
She was in a private room, with a ridiculous amount of machinery.
âI donât suppose youâd mind my company?â
âIf youâre not a doctor youâre more than welcome.â
âDo you have something against doctors?â
âTheyâve keât me here longer than I need to be so they can âoke me with needles and run tests.â
âDoesnât sound pleasant.â
âThatâs an understatement.â
âIâve brought you a bonsai tree, although I don't suppose you've anywhere to put this, considering I last met you living in a rusty warehouse"
"Is this the attitude you always have for visiting the injured?"
"Well I donât usually walk through the door so I'm being generous."
Shade looked over her. She looked miserable, even more so than being stuck in a capsule and drained of her energy.
âI have a few questions I still need to ask you.â
âIâd rather not. Iâve had to answer so many while in here. I feel worse now than when I got in here.â
âYou look worse.â
âThanks.â
An idea came to Shade.
âIf I sign you out and give you time to change, would you answer my questions?â
âMost of them.â
âMost?â
âIâm sorry I wasnât aware this was life story hour. Should we take turns? Iâll start from my birth.â
âTouchĂ©. Iâll be right back.â
Within the hour they were leaving the hospital, after only some mild threats to the doctors.
Because of course she needed to be stuck in a hospital bed. Thatâd help her condition get better.
When the two of them were outside, Shade opened a shadow door and brought her to the warehouse she had set herself up in. It didnât take as long as he expected for her to change. Though she did come back with wet hair.
âI wasnât aware there was a shower here.â
âI âoured a bottle of water on myself.â
âWhy.â
âIâm a âlant!â
â...Yes I suppose that does explain that.â
Nothing else was said as Shade led her through another shadow door. The two stepped out at a small cafe. He led her to the counter nearby.
âOrder whatever you want.â
âI have no idea what most of this is.â
âHm,â he turned to the person behind the counter. âTwo cups of peppermint tea.â
He led her to a nearby table and she looked back at the counter.
âUh?â
âItâll be done in a few minutes. Now. Questions. Is your name actually Umbra?â
â...NoâŠâ
âWhat is it?â
â...AmbrĂ©.â
âHow convenient. What is your actual name?â
âNo that is actually my name.â
âWell isnât that just dandy?â
âYou literally only go by Shade in your own home you donât get to use that tone of attitude with me.â
âAs far as I can see, you agreed to answer my questions.â
âYeah but we never agreed on your attitude.â
âYou agreed to that as soon as you agreed to talk to me. Next question. Iâve noticed you canât pronounce the letter p. Why is that?â
âBecause it doesnât exist in my home?â
âYouâre speaking English fairly well.â
âIâm from an alternate-verse. I donât see you getting on other âeoâleâs cases about sâeaking the same language.â
âOne, theyâre not here and two, those universes are almost identical.â
âIn my home youâd sound like a freak âronouncing that sound, so it goes both ways.â
âOn that topic, should I be expecting any more from your universe to be dropping by?â
âMost likely not. At least not from my âlanet. Or the sister âlanet.â
âOh?â
âCarlio was an outcast and my âlanet is dead,â she looked him square in the eye, giving him a hard stare.
âAh. Yes. That would be a good reason. I take it thatâs also why you settled down in Opal?â
â...Yeah,â she looked out the window. Not even looking back when a pot of tea with a side of milk was placed on the table.
âThereâs something more to that.â
â... Iâm not ready to answer that.â
He was going to press her further, but then again she did say she was going to answer most of his questions. Heâd find out at a later date. He always did in the end.
He poured some of the milk into his cup before pouring tea into his cup. Ambré followed his actions. She looked down at it, then to him.
âTea. A specific plant leaf in hot water.â
âAnd what you added?â
âMilk. It cools the tea.â
âDoes it matter which is added first?â
âNot anymore, but old habits die hard.â
He brought the cup to his mouth before the irony of the situation hit him.
âYouâre a plant.â
â...Yeah?â
âYouâre drinking tea.â
âHumans eat meat.â
âBut not other humans.â
âNot all âlants are the same strain? Iâm descended from a venus fly tra',â she smiled a toothy smile, showing off slightly pointed teeth.
âYouâre a carnivore than?â
â...Carnivore?â
âYou eat meat to survive.â
âAh, yes,â AmbrĂ© looked down at the cup she was drinking out of, then to other tables. âWhy are we drinking out of these cuâs and not those?â
âThis is tea. Use a tea cup, only a heathen would use anything else.â
âA what.â
âThe tea cup or the heathen part?â
â...Yes.â
âA tea cup is a particular cup used for tea. A heathen is one who does not belong to a widely practiced religion, which is a belief and worship of a higher power.â
âAnd you?â
â... While I am technically a heathen, I do use it as an insult. It rolls off the tongue well. What about you?â
She took a sip from her cup and avoided eye contact. âThere was this ancient tree. We called it⊠Well it would be translated to Ancient Soul, or Mother Life. There really isnât a specific descriâtion for it in English. But every⊠year⊠weâd offer thanks. It was believed that mother life was the first of our kind, and her seeds sârouted into our ancestors.â
Shade stayed silent.
âYou said widely âracticed religion, does that mean this world has many?â AmbrĂ© asked.
âToo many to count.â
âHow diverse.â
The two sat in silence for a few minutes before Shade spoke up.
âIâm going to teach you how to say the letter p.â
âWhat. No.â
âWhy not?â
âBecause I donât want to. Teach me something imâortant.â
Shade let out a sigh and pinched the bridge of his nose. âIâll leave you with some books. Do you know how to read?â
âDonât âatronize me.â
âIâm not.â
âOh. Well. Yes.â
âCome along then, Iâll bring you back to your⊠living space.â
âHow âolite of you. You feeling okay?â
âItâs faster than walking.â
âIâm sorry not all of us can teleâort.â
Shade opened a shadow door and the two of them stepped in. Stepping out into the warehouse Ambré has situated herself in, Shade walked back through and the shadow door closed behind him.
A few minutes later he came back with a small stack of books.
Placing them down on a nearby cleared off table he turned to Ambré.
âIâll be back in a few days to collect these. Please donât put them off until the last minute.â
âIâll do that just for you.â
âNot put them off or will put them off.â
âIâll leave that uâ to you to decide.â
âCharming,â with that he was gone.
He was true to his word, a few days later he came back. He returned through a shadow door, the oily shadows licking the area around them. He found Ambré snuggled up in a chair with one of the books.
âYou really did leave these for the last minute.â
âI did not! This is the last book I have to read. By the way, that book mentioned human biology and size and shaâe, all that. Are there exeâtions?â
Shade approched AmbrĂ©. âOh yes, I know-â Shade hit his head on a low-hanging metal pipe that was connected to the ceiling. AmbrĂ© burst into a fit of laughter.
âWatch out thereâs a âiâe!â
âThank you for the warning. But yes, there are exceptions. I know of one personally. Culp. he has shadow powers identical to mine.â
âWhat a strange name.â
âCulp? How is it strange?â
âSounds like the⊠um, like, the stringy stuff in orange juice?â
âPulp?â
âYeah that!â
â... Iâm sure he wouldnât like his name being compared to a fruit.â
âIâm sure Culâ would be fine with it.â
âCulp.â
âThatâs what I said, Culâ.â
âNo, Culp. C-u-l-p.â
âC-u-l-â.â
âNo- Cul- I forgot. You canât pronounce the p sound.â
âNo I can not. How is sir fruity center an exeâtion?â
Shade twitched ever so slightly.
âHeâs short. Shorter than the average human.â
âLike, just a little shorter or?â
âFully grown heâs the size of young child.â
âThat must suck. How does he-... wait no. Not a thing on this âlanet.â
âWhat?â
âThere were these huge trees that sârouted fruit. I really canât describe it, thereâs nothing Earth equivalent. Anyway, children would âick berries from the bushes while adults would climb the trees. If he never grew âast the height of a child heâd never be allowed to climb the trees. It was âractically a rite of âassage into maturity,â She smiled at the memory, then frowned sadly.
âNo Earth equivalent?â
âItâd be like trying to describe vanilla. The only way to describe vanilla is with vanilla.â
âA point well made. What did you think of the books?â
âWell, the book on biology is interesting, considering itâs completely different than my own. The one on language was confusing. The one about food was very informative though. These history books were really helpful too.â
"C'est comme ça."
"What?"
"It is what it is"
âWhat?â
âItâs French.â
âOh, the language thing,â she picked up the book, âWhy do humans need so many languages?â
âBefore humans made contact across the ocean they developed in separate societies around the world.â
âThatâs a weird conceât. Everyone in my home was connected in a sense. Then again, we were all âlants, not mammals.â
âYes that would create quite the cultural difference.â
âThis has been such a cultural shock I feel like Iâve been thrown into water after sunbathing.â
âHm, that reminds me, I feel I should apologise for earlier behaviour, let me make it up to you. Iâll buy two tickets to the museum. You can ask as many questions as you'd like about anything there and Iâll answer them.â
âReally! Thatâd be great because I have so many questions. Books do a great job at exâlaining about but not how.
âPerfect! Next Tuesday it is.â
âUh, thatâs three days from now?â
âExactly. Iâll come and get you at eleven in the morning?â
âEleven in the morning on Tuesday!â
Shade opened a shadow door, the dark inky shadows swirling. â Itâs a date then.â
