Simple

10AM and I'm on YouTube...its crazy how social media is a part of everyone's lives. I wake up and warm up my kettle for my french press. Change my newborns diaper while I wait for the whistle. my eyes barely open, I'm thinking of what I'm going to eat for dinner today...and its now 10:20AM.

I happen to glance at a picture of my eldest daughter in my office, then I look at my slumbered newborn..they’re genuinely happy. I start to think of simpler times. I’m thinking of times when life was equally as hard, but easier at the same time.

On YouTube I watched old videos of my friends and I create memories that will last forever and we didn't even know it. Pictures and videos of us being care-free and so happy. Don’t get me wrong, I love my life now with my wife and kids and I wouldn't trade it for anything in the world, but its something about nostalgia that really pulls me to a different era of happiness.

Eating fast food nowadays is a “quick meal” for convenience whereas back then it was a means of nutrition and energy source for us as kids who would stay outside with our skateboards..or maybe not even that, maybe just because none of us never wanted to go home because deep down we felt that with each other we were home. As cliché as it sounds, we formed a brotherhood that sparks a different type of smile in our faces as older men.

We shared food, clothes, and money out of love for one another. we all knew the layout of each others houses because it wasn't foreign for us to sleep over or just take a break at each others homes. Our parents became OUR parents and we even shared families.

It’s something about the bond we have that makes us stupid to the point where we would stay out all day with each other, in 100+ degrees or damn near freezing and windy, sometimes rainy conditions. None of that mattered because we were chasing the next memory that will live in us forever.

Somehow, we all got together for one last time and we didn't know it was going to be the last time. We didn't know it was our last “skate sesh” or our last “hoorah” if you will. We didn't know that we were going to go our separate ways and grow up. we didn't know we were chasing a career, or raising a family, or growing a business or even getting married! we didn't know that we were heading in that direction because the only thing we cared about was making the memory that was happening at the time.

As we grew a little older and a little more apart from each other, our significant others and kids have heard stories about us, stories that brings a different smile to our faces or a different laugh to our stomachs. they hear about how we were “dumb crazy kids” and how we used to be, and whenever we get the chance to meet again it feels like they already know us because of how much we talked about one another. the beauty of our brotherhood is that we never let the good times die, they ride on forever. whenever we see each other again, we always revert back to when we were kids and we start acting and/or talk like we used to when we would sit at the par on on a curb just shooting the shit.

I appreciate those memories and those good times because it was something well spent, time well spent. I was once told that “Time is something we all have, we all keep, we all spend and we all share. It’s the most valuable currency because its the only one we can’t obtain more of”. -Levi Maestro
