Moving back to her parents’ farm had felt a little bit like giving up to Grace, but, as her mother pointed out, she could pay rent, and live in the old barn, and things would be more normal. Grace wasn’t entirely convinced, but her mother had a point, and, more importantly, she missed her chickens. So that was how the twenty-six year old found herself moving back home, and into the recently converted barn. A vague scent of manure still penetrated the air, but Grace was almost glad about that. She had spent the entire day unpacking, and when she finally felt okay stopping, she walked over to the main house to see what her mother was up to. 

Almost as if she had been anticipating her daughter’s arrival to the second, Grace found herself being pulled inside, and a pie shoved into her hands. Her mother’s eyes carefully evaluated her daughter. “Put your hair up,” the older woman said, and Grace gave her a look. “There’s a very nice young man who moved next door with his family,” her mother continued. “You’re bringing that pie to them, and I’d appreciate it if their first impression of my daughter wasn’t a negative one.” Grace rolled her eyes. “It wouldn’t be the worst thing for you to meet someone while you were here,” her mother added, fussing around Grace’s hair, since the blonde wasn’t about to do anything herself. 

“Okay Mom,” Grace replied feeling like a teenager again. Without another word to her mother, and still clutching the pie, she slowly walked over to their neighbor’s home, and knocked on the door, waiting for someone to come answer. The pie was starting to feel heavy in her hands.
