Now is a good time to buy and use physical media.

Do you have a favorite movie? Is it queer? X-rated? Do you still have your old video game CDs or cartridges? Is the book you want to read at risk of being banned?

Do you think the media you enjoy may be at risk in the coming years?

Please start buying and using physical media. CDs, cartridges, books, records, DVDs, everything. Streaming services are continually removing media and becoming more hostile, and after this election, tons of media are at risk of being outlawed entirely.

Dig out that old VHS or DVD player, get your old Wii system running, and collect that entire book series that you read as a kid. Your dad's old cassette full of divorced dad rock songs is probably lying around somewhere. If you have a favorite artist who posts their work online, buy their art book. Get something you can hold in your hands.

Use your local library if you can! They have all this and more! Most thrift shops have this stuff at an affordable price!

Plus, I can vouch that it's just more fun to have the physical copy.

If the government wanted to take this from you, they would have to come to you and rip it from your hands. Make it difficult for them to do so.

question: i am currently a high schooler and i really want to be a librarian someday! i was wondering if you had any advice just like, at all?

first thing’s first: you’ll probably want to look into getting a library sciences degree - most career librarians have one. that’s really the only baseline requirement :)

personally, i worked as a librarian in high school and at my college, so if you want to get some more experience before you get a degree, that would be a good way to do it. joining any committees or finding volunteer work at a library can be a good way in to getting those kinds of jobs.

hey! you said you were a librarian in the tags of one of the posts you reblogged. do you have any advice for someone trying to get into this field? I so desperately want to work in a library.

in my experience most people find library jobs through nepotism (like i got my job through a friend’s mom, i recommended another friend, etc) but i think a good course of action would be to just go up to the front desk and ask if they’re hiring. most libraries also have emails you can find on their website that you could use to ask!

having a library sciences degree can also help if you’re looking for a higher-up position so i would consider looking into that if you’re interested.

I was going batty trying to find an archive of a children's magazine that I used to get back in elementary school- After scouring the internet and only finding stuff from the last few years on paid subscriptions, I checked my hometown library website, and surprise! they have it availible immediately online and the back issues go all the way to when I used to subscribe to it!!! HUGE W!!!!!!!!!

Hello, I was wondering if you’d be able to give me a recommendation. I’ve been curious about librarians in the WPA for a long time. In particular, librarians serving rural and isolated areas with bookmobile and/or horse and burros. Do you know of any recent books or articles?

thanks for the ask! unfortunately I don’t know much about this topic in particular, though it’s something i’m also very curious about! i don’t know how much research you’ve done so far, but if you’re just starting out it might be good to do some preliminary searching on jstor or the national archives. if you find anything, i’d love to hear about it!
