Clara scuffed her feet as she made her way down the lane to the Garrison by herself. Tommy had been home—she had spotted him in his office when she came down stairs—but she hadn’t lingered. She hadn’t made breakfast either, not wanting to risk all the noise it would make, not wanting to risk him coming to investigate and insisting on walking with her to her lesson.
For the first time in weeks, Clara wanted to walk by herself. Or at the very least, she wasn’t particularly interested in Tommy’s accompaniment. She had barely seen her brother since Cheltenham. And when she had seen him, he certainly hadn’t mentioned the change in their plans, the way he’d run off without a word—breaking a promise without so much as acknowledging that there had been a promise to break.
Clara took her walk to the pub by muscle memory, barely aware of her surroundings as she went, not until she reached out to twist the handle on the front door of the Garrison and met resistance. The door was locked.
Clara tried again, rattling the knob and pushing with all her weight just for good measure, but the door didn’t budge. Not a bit. Stepping to the side, she tried peeking through a window, but that wasn’t any use either. There was nothing to see, just a dark and empty pub.
It wasn’t like Grace to show up late. If anything, the woman always beat Clara to the pub. Even on the mornings that Tommy had brought her by early, Grace had always already been there, busy polishing glasses or cleaning up messes from the night before. And Clara hadn’t even left the house early today. If anything, she was a few minutes later than normal.
She supposed it was possible that the woman was simply having a bad morning. One of those days that nothing went to plan and everything was off. Everyone had those, Clara was sure. Clara told herself that Grace was probably running just a few minutes late. It wasn’t a bother to wait. If anything, it was a rather welcome reprieve, and Clara lowered herself to the ground by the front door, digging her new book from her bag as she settled in to wait.
The new book was another reason why she hadn’t been interested in walking to the Garrison with Tommy, some part of her certain he’d take it off of her if he saw she was trying to bring it to her lessons. Clara didn’t consider that particularly fair since moments like these were the exact reason why she always liked to carry a book, so she didn’t have to waste any time while waiting on other people, but she knew Tommy didn’t agree.
Clara made it through two chapters of her book before the tingle of concern bloomed in her, her awareness of the world around her coming back as she pulled her eyes from the words on the page. She could grant Grace a few minutes of lateness, but her brother’s old pocket watch to confirmed that over thirty minutes had passed. With a glance up and down the filling street, Clara stowed her book and the watch back in her bag before heading down the lane.
Clara had been to Grace’s room only once before, but she remembered the way, remembered where Harry had said Grace lived in a little room at the top of the stairs, so she set out in that direction with just a bit of hesitation brewing in her limbs. Even being not too far from home, Clara avoided the gazes of any passersby as she went. There were more people out and about now. People on their way to work. People going to the shops. Children put out of their houses by mothers to spend the day outside. Clara kept her head down as she moved through the streets until she found the little boarding house.
A young woman was slipping out the door as Clara reached it.
“Excuse me, is Miss Burgess in?” Clara asked and the woman nodded, holding open the door for Clara to slip through. “Top of the stairs to the left.”
At the top of the staircase, Clara knocked on the door to Grace’s room, her feet tapping as she waited. Clara could hear sounds coming from within. Movement, slow and quiet.
Clara knocked again as the sounds seemed to settle, the press of her fist against the wood a bit firmer, the resounding knock a touch louder.
“Grace?” Clara called out, pressing her ear against the door, the same way she and Finn always did when they were listening to something they weren’t meant to be listening to on the other side of the shop doors.
A slow, dragging set of footsteps approached, then, and Clara took a quick step back as the door opened. She gulped as she took in Grace’s face, the left side of it covered in a nasty bruise.
“Oh!” Clara squeaked, nearly backing into the wall behind her when Grace’s face slowly tipped down far enough to look at her straight on.
Bruises were an interesting thing, Clara thought, thinking mostly about the way they seemed to be living things that changed and grew and shifted. You could always tell just about how long ago a bruise had come in, maybe even how it had come to be. Some bruises were easily hidden and others, like the deep purple one gracing the left side of Grace’s face, those you couldn’t miss.
“What…what happened…to your face…?” Clara sputtered.
Grace frowned and swallowed before answering, her voice rough and scratching as it came up her throat. “Just a bruise,” she offered. “I tripped down the stairs.”
Clara’s eyebrows furrowed and she glanced back down the stairs she’d just come up. They were narrow and steep and Clara winced. She had fallen down plenty of stairs—thought herself a bit of an expert, actually, considering how many times she’d slid down the entire flight at no. 6 Watery Lane—and the only parts of her that had ever been bruised were her bottom and her back after hitting step after step all the way down to the first floor.
But Clara supposed it was possible to bruise your face if you fell just the right way.
Possible…but unlikely.
The bruise looked like the type of bruise that some women got from men that were too rough. Too drunk.
Clara had seen those types of bruises plenty of times, too. She knew just the type of men who delivered them. Clara hadn’t really been old enough to remember it, but over the years she had come to understand that her own father was that type of man.
Maybe Grace’s man—the one she shared secret messages and clandestine meetings with—was that type of man, too.
It was a more probable cause than Grace falling down the stairs, anyway, and Clara knew from her detective books that the more probable cause was most often the right one.
“Come in, Clara.” Grace pressed a hand into her head, squinting an eye closed as she said the words. “I was just making tea.”
Clara thought the woman looked more like she’d just woken up, the idea of tea not even on her mind, but she allowed herself to be led inside the room. Clara hadn’t intended on coming in, or on staying, but she hadn’t wanted to go home either—to see Tommy and explain herself to him. To explain that she’d gone to her lesson but lost track of time because of her book, and then she’d gone to find Grace, and…well, she’d much rather stay right where she was.
Clara sat down on the bed, which had not yet been made, her gaze sweeping over the room. The red dress, the one Clara remembered Grace wearing to the race, was crumpled up on the floor. Clara settled her gaze back on Grace as the woman shuffled slowly toward the stove.
“How did you fall down the stairs?”
Grace kept her body turned away from Clara, occupied herself with the kettle.
“Clumsiness,” Grace answered, a lie though it wasn’t. It was a bit of clumsiness that had allowed Billy Kimber to get the hit in. A hit that had knocked her hard enough that her face had crashed into the pool table as she fell. It had also been a bit of clumsiness that she had even allowed herself to be left alone with him in the first place. She should have told Tommy ‘no’ from the time he suggested it. Grace had known what Kimber was after, what men like him planned to do when they were alone with a woman…
But in the end, it had brought Grace and Tommy closer together, an unintended outcome of the excursion, but something which Grace had been angling for all along anyway. She and Tommy had been growing steadily closer, but Cheltenham had shifted things.
Grace could tell he was feeling sorry. She could sense the extra bit of sentiment in the gangster when he’d stopped by the day after the races, even though he worked to mask it by claiming he was there on Arthur’s behalf…checking to see if she would be well enough to tend bar at the Garrison.
Grace had let him keep up the ruse, part of her thrilled that her attempts at getting him closer seemed to be working, part of her a little bit thrilled by him in general because there was something about Thomas Shelby that Grace couldn’t deny she found appealing. Even if he was a gangster. Even if he was meant to be a target. But mostly, Grace was too tired and her head throbbing far too persistently for her to do anything other than let the man check up on her in his own way. Bad as she was feeling, she had needed someone to dote on her.
Grace closed her eyes a moment, bracing herself against the stove as the water warmed in front of her.
“So...how was Cheltenham?”
Clara’s question sounded tentative as it reached Grace’s ear. It sounded far away and close all at once, as if the girl was everywhere, all around her. Grace glanced in Clara’s direction, opening her eyes though her vision seemed dim—as though Grace was squinting—and then the screeching started. Grace lifted a hand to reach for the kettle, her fingers nearly on the handle before she realized that the sound wasn’t the kettle at all, but a high pitched ringing in her ears, loud enough that Grace couldn’t hear Clara as she started calling out the woman’s name.
“Grace! Grace, are you alright?” Clara asked, stepping forward when Grace swayed.
“I’m—”
Clara caught Grace’s weight as the woman grasped the girl’s shoulder. Clara wasn’t sure how the two of them stayed up right, but Clara wrapped her arm around Grace’s waist, easing her towards the bed even as Grace regained her strength.
It’s what she had seen done with Arthur or John when they’d had too much to drink, someone leading them to a safe place to sit before they cracked their head open trying to get there themselces. Clara didn’t think this was quite the same as that though—Grace didn’t seem quite herself, but she didn’t seem drunk, and she was still able to help with managing her weight as they walked.
Clara helped Grace lower herself onto the bed, grateful that the woman easily slid onto the mattress, relieving Clara from bearing her weight.
Clara stepped back, taking as deep of a breath as her chest would allow, as tight as it was, her whole body suddenly tense. She tensed further as Grace reached for the basin beside the bed to empty the contents of her stomach.
Clara stood there frozen in place as she watched Grace retching into the basin and it was almost as if the moment was blurred with one from not too long ago, the moment when she and John had come across Arthur that morning. He hadn’t been alright. Her brother had needed help that day.
Grace groaned as she leaned back in the bed, her face ashen.
“I’m gonna get help.” Clara stepped back, barely conscious of how quickly she was moving towards the door. “I’m gonna—”
“No, Clara, I’m—” Grace leaned over, retching into the basin again, and Clara didn’t waste any more time arguing as she set off down the steps and back out to the streets. She was tempted to head straight to Jeremiah’s, but she knew it was better to go see her brother first. To let him know what was going on and see what he had to say, so moving as quickly as her feet would take her, Clara stopped by home first, running through the front door and skidding to a halt in the shop.
A flash of annoyance crossed Tommy’s face when he looked up and saw her standing there in the now busy shop, but Clara got her own words out before Tommy could properly think of any words to chastise her with. She quickly told him what had happened with Grace and before Clara had finished, Tommy was out of his chair, guiding them both through the door.
“Go fetch Jeremiah,” he said, heading in the direction of Grace’s room as he set her off in the opposite direction.
Clara hustled down the street, hoping Jeremiah was still home and not out preaching yet. The streets had busied up a bit, and Clara had to push herself all the harder, weaving around her fellow pedestrians to make better time even though she knew that by now, Tommy would be there with Grace.
Tommy would help. He would make sure she was alright.
Clara didn’t slow her steps even though something eased in her chest at the thought. She held onto the thought to help steady herself as she turned onto Jeremiah’s street and slowed in front of his door. Clara banged her fist, not bothering to soften her hits until it eased open.
“Tommy needs—” Clara’s mind and face went blank for a moment before realization dawned on her and her eyes went wide. “Val?”
“Clara Shelby,” the girl—a young woman, now, by the looks of it—answered, half a grin on her face as she stood on Jeremiah’s threshold with a baby on her hip.
It had been ages. Years. And if it wasn’t for the familiar voice and the way that the girl’s face shifted as she smiled, Clara might’ve questioned whether it was her old friend standing in front of her at all.
The Valerie Ray that Clara remembered was a kid, like her. But the person standing in front of Clara looked like a young woman. Like Ada or Lizzie. She had more than a bit of height on Clara and she had curves and…well, she had a pretty little baby on her hip, which made her look even older.
But her friend Val wasn’t much older than Isiah, just a few months or so. And in trying to consolidate all of that, Clara found herself a bit stuck…a bit at a loss for words until Isiah popped his head through the open door, his sudden presence breaking her concentration.
“Clara?” he asked, taking in her reddened face and windswept hair. “What’s wrong?”
Clara shook her head, pulling her gaze from Val and the baby and refocusing it on Isiah. “Is…is your dad home?”
Isiah shook his head. “Just went out,” he said, glancing out onto the street before pulling her inside the house. “What’s going on?”
“Tommy sent me to get him,” she answered, her heartbeat rising again as the full weight of why she’d run here in the first place crashed into her once again. “There’s something wrong with Grace.”
Clara gave Isiah the details she assumed were important enough and within a minute, Isiah had left out through the front door after convincing Clara he’d find his father and direct him to Grace’s door.
Clara settled at Isiah’s kitchen, accepting the glass of water that Val sat down in front of her, insisting in the bossy way that Clara remembered that she drink it all.
Clara took a tentative sip at first and then greedy gulp after gulp as Val sat down at the other side of the table, watching as Clara gasped for breath when she reached the bottom of the glass.
Clara wiped her mouth before meeting Val’s gaze, her eyes drifting once again to the baby in her hands. “I thought you were never coming back.”
“So did I,” Val answered with a shrug. “Mum said as much, but I guess things change.”
Clara considered the truth in that, deciding there was really nothing much truer in the world. Things were always changing and somehow always staying the same and…Clara let the thought fall away, feeling something of a headache coming on with all the pondering that could all lead to.
“Are your brothers here, too?” she asked instead. “And Dougie?”
Val nodded.
“Your parents?”
Val nodded again. “Out looking for a new place right now. We’re moving back.”
“And the baby…is it…?”
“Mine?” Val laughed, a sound so familiar Clara could have sworn she’d never stopped hearing it in the first place. “No, Clara. He’s not mine. This is my baby brother, Augie.”
Val stood up and quickly passed over the gurgling, drooling baby. He was a chubby thing, and Clara had to quickly readjust him to shoulder the weight. Within seconds, Clara was fighting to take back the end of her braid from the babbling infant, giving up as his grip proved stronger than hers.
“You look…older,” Clara offered, barely glancing to where Val now stood leaning against the counter.
“And you look…” Val started looking Clara over, considering her old friend. “...almost exactly the same.”
Clara knew it wasn’t meant to be an insult, but it certainly wasn’t a compliment either, and for some reason she felt a little hurt by Val’s words, the same way she felt when Finn commented on how small she was or teased her for being the baby.
And because she wanted Val to like her. To be impressed by her the way Clara had always been impressed.
Before she went away, Val had never seemed to care that Clara was younger. It hadn’t mattered that Clara was a scrawny kid because even though Valerie Ray was a bit older—Isaiah’s age, plus a few months—back then, Val had just been a scrawny kid, too. It was more important that in a sea of boys, Clara and Val were the only girls beside Ada, who had always been too cool to play with them.
And as much as Isiah had been Clara’s friend back then, Valerie had been something different, the first real girlfriend she’d ever had.
Val had been the only one Clara had ever had if she really thought of it.
While Ada had always had a group of girls she ran around with, Clara hadn’t, not before she met Val, and not after she’d moved away after either.
It had been about two years since Clara had said goodbye to Val, and somehow it felt simultaneously like yesterday and like ages ago. Again, Clara let the thought fade away before giving it too much consideration, the tension in her mind posing a threat once again.
“How’s your family?” Val asked, eyebrow raised as if she already knew. She likely did. Isiah had probably told her already, so easy it was to confide in Val because she was the type of girl who seemed to know all the answers already anyways, sort of like Ada. Sort of like Polly. A lot like Isiah's grandmother had been.
In that way, Val was a little bit of something Clara could never quite master herself. Something she’d always envied a bit.
Clara shrugged, not quite certain where to start when it came to her family and all that had happened. The question of how they all were doing was another consideration that got Clara’s head spinning, exacerbating the dull ache that was settling in. Isiah and Finn came barreling through the door before Clara could answer, the both of them out of breath and giggling, and she hadn’t minded the sudden commotion it caused, bringing the twins and Dougie, and Val’s younger sister, Doris, out into the kitchen. Clara hadn’t minded that she didn’t have to figure out a proper answer to Val’s question or take on any of the inevitable follow up questions Val would ask.
Clara stood to meet them and settled the baby on the floor. “How’s Grace?”
Finn shrugged and Clara turned to Isiah as he closed the front door behind them. “Dad’s with her and Tommy now,” he said. “Says she’ll be alright.”
“Good,” Val answered as she stood, looping her arm through Clara’s as she stepped toward the door and pulled a small clutch-sized purse off the hook.
“Clara and I are going out,” she said. “You boys mind the children.”
“Us?” Finn groaned. “That’s women’s work.”
Val smirked. “Well, I guess the two of you must be women then, eh?”
Isiah opened his mouth—either to argue or agree, Clara wasn’t sure—but Val got her own words out faster.
“Tell my mum I’m staying at the Shelby’s tonight,” Val said as if it was something that could be decided between just the two of them, the permission of their respective adults not something to be considered.
They were almost to the threshold when Isiah stepped in front of them.
“You’re not leaving the babies,” he said. “I’ve got to be available for Blinder business and—”
“And I’m not changing any smelly nappies.”
Clara turned to roll her eyes at her brother and Finn took the opportunity to thrust Augie into her arms.
“And take Doris, too.” Isiah took his little cousin’s hand, guiding her to toddle forward.
“And you tell Aunt Pol I’m staying here tonight,” Finn said to his sister.
“Good,” Val answered, an insult to Finn evident even though Val hadn’t said any clever words.
Hours later, after the babies had been fetched up by Val’s mother, Clara and Val were lost in making up for the years lost between them. Once the shock of the day had eased a bit, somewhere after lunchtime, Clara had started answering Val’s questions with a bit more enthusiasm. A bit more truth. And once she started talking, Clara found that it felt so good to let it out, to share. It felt good to have a sympathetic friend, so good that Clara forgot to ask the same questions back. Forgot to ask how her friend had been. How she was living. How she was feeling.
But Val hadn’t seemed to mind. She listened to Clara as though it was a story, the Saga of the Shelby clan. For what felt like the first time in months, Clara had someone to listen, someone who didn't question her, though Val had questioned plenty.
There had been a time when all Val had heard of Tommy out of Clara's mouth was praise, back when they were small and the boys were away, but now, even with Clara presenting it all as neutrally as she could, Val had validated each of Clara's concerns and condemned where she saw fit, Tommy's actions taking on the brunt of it. A part of Clara even felt the sting of Val's judgment as though it had been directed at her, like defending her family had to come before her own comfort.
“I can’t believe Ada left all this behind,” Val offered at a pause in the conversation. She lounged on Ada’s bed sifting through the novel that had last been left on Ada’s nightstand while Clara sat on her sister's floor.
Clara’s first thought at seeing Val there in her sister’s bed, both of them donning Ada’s clothes and heels and rouge was that Ada would kill her for being in her bedroom. She was surprised that Polly hadn’t gotten after them, but then again, after the initial hellos, Polly hadn’t paid the girls much mind. She’d been too focused on tending the babies. Doris and Augie had kept Polly happily busy for the hours until Mrs. Ray came to collect them.
And after that, Polly had been in a good mood—cooking dinner and baking cookies while the girls went about their business on the second floor.
“She didn’t take much when she—”
Clara quieted at hearing the creak of the staircase, Tommy’s steps familiar to her even through the closed door. She slipped out of Ada’s room and lingered by Tommy’s open door, a bit breathless, her cheeks flushed with a bit of color from emotion and Ada’s rouge.
“How’s Grace?” Clara asked. “Is she—?”
“Grace is fine,” Tommy said, his voice gruff as he worked to convince himself it was the truth. She was bruised and tired and still complained of a headache and nausea, but she was fine.
Clara flinched at the tone, the tightness there in his voice and the set of his shoulders as he went about removing layers—his hat, his jacket, his pocketwatch—when he really wished to remove the weight of the day.
“Tommy, do you think…well…Does Grace have…does she have a man?”
Tommy’s hand stilled on the gun in its holster, and he took a breath.
“I don’t know, Clara,” he said, the gun clattering as he dropped it on the dresser, his attention shifted to filling the basin there with the hot water he’d brought upstairs with him.
He needed to wash his face, maybe if removing the weight of the day didn’t work, he could at least rinse a bit of it away. He could rinse it away and have a smoke and drift off for a while. At least that’s what Tommy had thought he needed, the only reason he’d come back to Watery Lane rather than going to the pub, but now that Tommy was here, all he wanted was to get away. To get out of this too small room with its shrinking walls. To get away from his small sister with her too big questions.
“She said she fell,” Clara continued, “but I thought maybe a bad man did this to her, and maybe you could—”
“I don’t know, Clara,” Tommy repeated. He splashed a bit of water on his face. “It’s Grace’s business.”
Clara thought maybe he did know though. She’d gotten the distinct impression lately that Grace’s business had become Tommy’s business.
She thought it possible that he just didn’t want to tell her, some part of Clara realizing that despite their closeness and camaraderie over the years, there was much more that her brother kept from her. Questions had once brought them together, a way for them to bond as Tommy fed her curiosity, curating her understanding of the world, but the questions she was asking weren’t bringing her closer to her brother anymore. They weren’t bringing her any closer to answers, either.
If anything, the questions left her more confused.
If anything, the questions were pushing her and Tommy further apart.
“But, Tommy—”
Clara shuffled on her feet and Ada’s heels clicked on the hardwood, drawing Tommy’s gaze to the shoes and then the outfit, all of it stolen from Ada’s wardrobe, all of it too big and too mature for his little sister, reminding him of a disguise.
Reminding him of a simple barmaid at the races, dressed up as the posh girl.
Reminding him of the trouble all that had caused.
Clara noted her brother’s stare, and her gaze followed his to her stolen outfit and stolen shoes. She didn’t need him to say it, the start of an explanation coming out as soon as the quiet settled between them.
“I was just—” Playing, showing off, being a kid. Clara didn’t know which answer she intended to give, but when she and Val were little, they’d always been following after Ada, trying on her clothes and playing in her room despite Ada’s protests. It had seemed natural that the girls had ended up there when they arrived at the house even though Ada was no longer here.
“Come here,” Tommy said, his awareness drawn to the powder and rouge painted on his sister’s face. He’d watched Grace apply so much of it before he left her room, a frown on her face as she failed to cover the bruise he felt responsible for. “Come here and clean your face.”
“But, Tommy—”
“Now, Clara,” he answered.
Clara shuffled closer as Tommy dipped a cloth in the warm water, and rubbed the soap against it. It wasn't the nice smelling soap Ada and Clara liked, and before Clara could protest, Tommy was reaching down to lift her, Ada’s shoes slipping from her feet and clattering against the floor by the time Tommy settled her on the chair beside her dresser.
From the chair, Clara stood nearly as tall as Tommy did, their eyes easily meeting in the dim lamplight.
“You’re not meant to be in her things,” Tommy said, though the words were lost on her because more than Tommy looking angry, he looked terribly sad and tired, and some part of Clara felt that washing over her, a weight heavier than whatever disappointment she carried.
“Certainly shouldn’t be wearing that rouge,” Tommy continued before running the damp cloth down Clara’s cheek, which she allowed without complaint, some tension eased by the feel of the warm, soft material on her skin and the fact that her brother’s movements were far gentler than his tone would have suggested.
Some part of Clara was still angry with him about their missed outing. Some part of her was still worried about Grace. Some part of her had the urge to scream out that she wasn’t a baby. She didn’t need to be coddled or protected from the truth. She could dress up in Ada’s clothes and rouge if she wanted. She certainly didn’t need her brother to wash her face for her.
But Clara didn’t voice any of that. She let Tommy wipe their sister’s makeup away and she found herself to be comforted by it, could tell it soothed something in her brother, too.
It was a delicate balance, Clara decided, being eleven years old. Everyone expected her to be good and easy. They expected her to do as she was told. They expected a certain maturity and understanding, a certain bit of adultness and reliability, but at the end of the day, Clara was still expected to know her place. To know she was still a child in the eyes of everyone around her, ordered about and told what to and kept in line when it suited them. Expected to know well-enough how to behave when it didn’t.
Tommy had always praised her maturity and her cleverness, but Clara had a feeling Val was right. People liked the version of a person that was easiest to control. Her brother preferred the girl he’d raised, the sister he knew before he left for France. That girl was easier to manage than the girl she was now. Better. And Clara didn’t blame him because there were times when she preferred the old version of brother, too.
Times when she wished they could just go back.
So Clara let Tommy wash Ada’s rouge from her face, compliant as the cloth scrubbed against her skin, her hand holding onto Tommy's arm for balance as he tilted her face towards the light.
“Tommy?” she said, the cloth stilling against her cheek as her brother met her eye, the look on his face one of near defeat, the mere prospect of Clara’s question seeming to weigh on him, to try him, so Clara filled the quiet before he could either deny or grant her permission.
“I already asked Aunt Polly, but she said I should ask you…” Clara started, even though Polly had said no such thing about asking her brother, granting permission to the girls’ request outright. “Can a friend stay over tonight? We’ll be quiet and—”
“Fine,” Tommy answered, relieved and surprised at the nature of her question. He'd been expecting worse, bracing himself to shut her down. He idly went back to cleaning Clara’s face. “But Isiah sleeps in your bed and you can sleep in Ada’s.”
“It’s not Isiah.” Clara reached up to take the cloth, scrubbing on her own for a moment to finish the job before setting it aside. “It’s Val.”
Tommy let the name rattle around his brain for a few moments, trying to figure out why it sounded familiar even though he couldn’t place it. As far as he knew, his sister hadn’t made any new friends lately and he’d not seen her with anyone but Finn and Isiah’s crowd since he came back.
Maybe she had mentioned it. Maybe he hadn’t been listening. Tommy had been about to ask his sister for clarification when a girl—a young woman, really—cleared her throat from the doorway. She, too, was dressed in Ada’s clothes, rouge applied to her cheeks and lips, but despite her clearly youthful face, she didn’t look like a kid dressed in their big sister’s clothing. Not like Clara did.
“Valerie Ray,” the girl said, a hand extended out towards Tommy. “Isiah’s favorite cousin. A pleasure to finally meet Clara's infamous Tommy. I’ve heard all about you.”
Tommy shook the girl’s outstretched hand. “Heard all about me, eh?”
Val nodded. “From Aunt Polly and Ada and Finn." Her eyes shifted to Clara for a moment, caught the red of her cheeks. "And from Clara, of course.”
“Of course,” Tommy echoed, glancing at his sister. “All wonderful things, I’m sure.”
Val shrugged.
“Val and I..." Clara started, interjecting before Val could say something more. Clara had a feeling she might. "We played together when you were away and she just came back today.”
Tommy nodded. Clara had told him, had probably chattered on for a good while about her friend back when he was first back, but Tommy had barely been functioning then. Could barely remember any of the early days back. He couldn’t recall the specifics, but he did remember Finn and Clara mentioning Isiah’s cousins. He had pictured a gaggle of scrawny little kids, like Clara, Finn, and Isiah had been when he got back…like Clara still was. Tommy hadn’t realized that the girl his sister had been running with while he was away would be aged halfway between his two sisters, but he supposed he had never properly asked.
So Tommy was at a bit of a loss even though Val was looking at Tommy like she knew him and didn't particularly like him. She was watching him and assessing him so he figured she’d heard plenty, and not all of it good.
Clara didn’t like the tension, didn’t like the way Val was looking at her brother like he was a bad man, some part of her regretting the candidness with which she had spoken, regretting the fear and hurt and pain she’d loosed in the safety of Ada’s bedroom and the presence of an old friend.
"We should go," Clara said as she eased off the chair.
"Nice to meet you, Mr. Shelby," Val said before backed out into the hallway.
Tommy stopped Clara before she could follow, and she was near certain that her brother somehow knew that she'd complained about him. That she'd turned Val against him with her words, but Tommy didn't say anything, just handing her a book.
Clara mumbled a thank you as she took the book and held it to her chest. She didn’t remember dropping it, but it had evidently spilled out of her bag, left on Grace’s floor when she’d helped shoulder the woman’s weight.
Tommy didn’t answer as he slipped his arms back into his jacket and collected his pocket watch. Clara moved slowly towards the door, reaching down to lift Ada’s heels from the floor as she left. Tommy returned his gun to its holster, his cap in his hand as he moved tothe hallway, past Clara and Val.
Clara was tempted to ask where he was going, some part of her hurt by the way their interaction had ended, hurt by their omissions, but her questions had already set a chasm between them, making things worse, so she turned to head down the hallway, back to Ada’s room. Back to the safe, affirming space she and Val had lost themselves in before Tommy came up the stairs.
“Clara?”
She backtracked to meet her brother at the top of the stairs, some small part of her mustering a bit of hope at hearing him call out her name. Clara hoped for repair, but Tommy calling out her name wasn’t a bid for connection. He wasn’t calling her over to apologize for breaking his promise or to fix whatever seemed to continuously be fractured between them.
When Clara reached the stairs, Tommy wasn’t even facing her, his body and gaze turned down towards the first floor as he told her to keep herself and her friend out of Ada’s things.
He didn’t say he was sorry.
He didn’t even say goodnight.
He was just gone, the distance between them growing once again. Clara didn’t dwell on it though, not with Val there watching and waiting. Ready to help repaint the rouge on Clara’s face, ready to refit the heels Tommy had thought his sister was too young to be wearing and tell her she looked beautiful and glamorous.
Clara suddenly didn’t care if Val thought her brother was a bad person. She didn't care if she condemned him and it was her fault. Even if it felt a little like betrayal to let someone speak ill of her brother, even if the distance between them felt a bit more permanent and that scared it her, it felt good being listened to. It felt good to be validated. It felt good to have a friend.

Ben v 2024
Three days into the new year and so far I’m not liking what 2K24 is offering up! Got a cuppa in hand? Ok, let’s go:
I spent New Year’s Eve & Day at Cheltenham racecourse, which eventually panned out ok, but started poorly. The van I was scheduled to take broke down the night before, which meant I had to spend 3-and-a-half hours in the office on NYE morning with a colleague getting the replacement van up to speed before I could go. Normally it wouldn’t be such a laborious task, but horse racing is very different to most of our other jobs, so it wasn’t a quick plug-and-play situation.
I arrived at Cheltenham just before 2:30, which still gave Crofty and me ample time to get ourselves ready for the following day’s racing. Despite our backlog of work and a few more gremlins rearing their heads, we made good progress for a couple of hours before we were suddenly plunged into darkness - we’d been powered off! Some bright spark had told the chap in charge of power that the site was clear, even though we’d informed the unit manager we were sticking around. This was all the more baffling given that whoever it was that gave the order was not onsite themself!
That brought the day’s shenanigans to a screeching halt, and left us with more ground to make up the next morning than we would have liked. However, we managed to deliver a clean show against all odds, and I was able to breeze the 2-hour journey home fuelled by this little victory. For added fun, someone nearly careered into me on a roundabout, which resulted in a very different kind of screeching halt.
Day 2 also went heavily off-script - Dad drove down to mine to lend me his car for a month or two - mine is beyond saving, and wheels are gonna be very handy in the immediate future (read on, Macduff). We stayed long enough to jump start my old banger (in readiness for a scrapper coming to collect), before we hopped back in Dad’s car so I could drive him home to Oakham. On a good day, the journey is no more than 2 hours, and we were making very good progress until we reached the outskirts of town to discover that every single road had been flooded by Storm Henk. Dad had only left a few hours previously, so it must have absolutely chundered it down.
After a few failed alternative routes, we struck upon the nearest train station, which was giving no sign of issues. However, once we rocked up at Kettering station, it was clear that the rain had put paid to that idea, too. We debated our options for a while before deciding to deposit Dad at a nearby hotel and cross everything that the following day would allow him to complete his journey. Happily, he did indeed make it home the next day, ending that segment of drama.
I spent the majority of Day 3 in Luton looking for a new place to live after I received an early Christmas card from my landlord informing me that I had two months to make myself scarce - which is never welcome at any time of year - but the timing made the deadline seem a lot closer.
Viewing #1 was cancelled at the eleventh hour, #2 was the size of a shoe box (and a very grubby one at that), and #3 - although much more acceptable - was smaller than my current flat and pricier with it. I can at least say I got the ball rolling and got some viewings under my belt, but it was a bit of a dud day in truth. I consoled myself with the fact that I managed to fit in an impromptu blood donation while I was in town, so at least somebody benefitted from my efforts over the last few days!

After a hard day at work, people relax with their families at home. Window cleaning in Glen Iris by professionals can offer beautiful clean house windows. A neat house enhances the atmosphere and promotes happiness. Residents can spend valuable time at home because it gives them emotional peace when windows, carpets, etc are clean.
One of the many aspects of home cleaning is carpet cleaning in Cheltenham and it's best to hire expert cleaners for the job. As a result of their porous design, rugs, carpets, and furniture all gradually accumulate dust. As a result, house accessories require regular upkeep to avoid becoming a dust mite haven.
Let’s Have a Brief Look at Some Other Services Offered by Reputed Cleaners
Upholstery Cleaning: To keep your furniture from turning into a haven for dust mites, you must routinely clean it. Long-term blocked pores create an unpleasant odour, and diminishing colour produces a bad ambience.
Carpet Cleaning: Carpets are essential for a house as everyone loves carpets be they young or old but it also acts as a home for the decaying epidermis cells we continually shed. They are consumed by dust mites, whose excretions are hazardous to both human and animal health. When carpet dust becomes airborne, it can spread a lot of grit and germs that can damage the lungs and the respiratory system.
Window cleaning: Windows become dirty as a result of frequent use and external variables. As the dust particles circulate throughout the house, odours are produced as well as potential allergens and health hazards. Additionally, filthy windows reduce a house's curb appeal.
Tile and Grout Cleaning: Over time, tiles and grout both accumulate a lot of grime and lose their lustre. Not just residential homes but also commercial complexes like retail shops, and offices also need to hire services for tile and grout cleaning to keep the customers happy with a clean environment.
