admittedly I have trouble distinguishing between "local famous" and "actual famous" (as judged by americans, the arbiters of pop culture) bc I forget about canadian content laws and just assume, for example, that a song/artist inescapable on the radio here is also well-known elsewhere. but I am always thinking about an argument I had with my mother once where she was ADAMANT that joel plaskett was like actual famous and I was like "mom I don't even think he's famous in other parts of canada" and her argument was "well if he isn't famous why was he on sesame street???" and I didn't believe her and made her look it up and turns out he was just on some random kids cbc show where they also had puppets and he sang like a kids version of fashionable people or something. tbh still riding the high of winning that argument bc she was genuinely really heated about it and thought I was gaslighting her. this was her hill and she was prepared to die on it screaming for some reason
