ODU Football Plays Hard and Tough But Falls to South Carolina, 23-19
By Harry Minium COLUMBIA, S.C. – Defeat with honor is a statement that isn’t in the lexicon of Old Dominion Head Football coach Ricky Rahne. But that clearly described what happened Saturday night at Willams-Brice Stadium. ODU went toe-to-toe Saturday night with an SEC opponent on its own home turf. The Monarchs were often more physical than South Carolina and at times, outplayed the…

Taylor Heinicke was amazing tonight! So glad to see him get his chance like this on a national stage and put on that kind of performance. Hopefully this gets him the opportunity for big things in the future in the NFL...

Minium: There is Already a Buzz About ODU's Football Opener Against Virginia Tech
Minium: There is Already a Buzz About ODU’s Football Opener Against Virginia Tech
Story Links NORFOLK, Va. – They coached for nine years together under James Franklin at Penn State and the camaraderie between Old Dominion football coach Ricky Rahne and Virginia Tech coach Brent Pry was apparent during a forum Monday night at the Norfolk Marriott Waterside. When coaches are close they like to give each other a hard time, and Rahne didn’t hesitate to chide Pry for…

Conference Realignment Grades: Sun Belt
Following the American Athletic Conference’s raid on Conference-USA, the Sun Belt found their own chance to get a leg up on the competition. The league also raided Conference USA, taking several of the remaining strongest brands/programs, while once again promoting the cream of the FCS to the FBS to infuse more talent into the league.
Marshall, Old Dominion, and Southern Miss were given a life raft away from the sinking C-USA ship. The Golden Eagles fit perfectly with the culture and geography of the Sun Belt even though USM hasn’t been the program it used to be 10+ years ago. The Thundering Herd and the Monarchs extend the league further North than they’ve been before, but these moves shouldn’t strain the conference geographically by any means. Marshall is a longtime stalwart of the mid-major world, the Herd should transition just fine into their new home. ODU has never really been successful at FBS football just yet, they’re a bet on the future.
The final piece of the puzzle is James Madison. The Dukes are moving up from the Colonial Athletic Association in the FCS and will pair up with Old Dominion as the league’s new foothold in Virginia. JMU joins former FCS powers App State, Coastal Carolina, and Georgia Southern in Sun Belt’s East division.
One other side effect of this push into football dominance is that the Sun Belt’s two non-football members did leave. I haven’t really found the reasoning for it, but for college football purposes this has zero impact.
Schools lost: Arkansas-Little Rock, UT-Arlington Schools gained: James Madison, Marshall, Old Dominion, Southern Miss
Grade: A-
The Sun Belt made out like bandits in the latest round of realignment. No other FBS conference comes close except, of course, the SEC. Pound for pound, this conference might be the best G5 league moving forward. At worst, the Sun Belt will be among the top 3 G5 conferences with the weakened AAC and the Mountain West. These were all very savvy moves and should pay off handsomely in the near and long term for this burgeoning conference.

OBX characters and what Virginia school they would go to
this post was inspired by the one @p0guestyle did for North Carolina universities! @alexandracheers and any other Virginians, lmk if you agree!!
JJ: Old Dominion University. In VA, the major party school is Radford which I originally thought would be where I could see JJ, but then I realized Radford is too far away from the coast. ODU is the best of both worlds, it is a party school and it is relatively close to the beach. ODU is also the only school in VA with a marine biology program and I could totally see JJ realizing maybe he wants to go to college and Pope would help him get his grades up so he could get in. Also, JJ would definitely facetime Pope all the time for help with his labs.
John B: Virginia Tech. John B reminds me of the guys from my high school that when they announced they got accepted at VT, I was shocked because they are so dumb in person I didn’t realize they are smart on paper. I could see him vibing at the massive tailgate parties before the football games.
Kiara: Virginia Commonwealth University. Rich city and the kids of VCU is a melting pot of art kids, environmentally and politically woke kids, and kids who think being a nursing student is a personality trait. Richmond is a really cool city (travel in groups, though) filled with lots of cool murals, thrift stores, restaurants, and VCU is in the heart of it and Kie would absolutely thrive.
Sarah Cameron: University of Virginia. The Chapel Hill of Virginia, for the kids who aren’t smart enough to get into W&M but are still smart because their parents have a certain vision of success. She would fit super well with the niche of non-asshole preppy kids, probably on the pre-med track.
Pope Heyward: William and Mary. You are the cream of the crop if you can get into this school, I am talking 4.0+ gpa, 1500+ SAT score, and resume of someone who never sleeps. Pope would get in on early decision and make the honors college.
Topper Thorton: Hampton Sydney. An all boy’s college with three types of guys: daddy’s money, the horn dogs, and the normies there on academic scholarships. My friend went to a party there and said that they’ll let any girls into their parties but will ID guys so it is only Hampton Sydney dudes at the party.
Rafe Cameron: Radford. All I have to say about this is that one time my friend was visiting this school and an older classmate of ours that had graduated from our high school invited my friend to go back to his place and do cocaine.

Miniam: ODU kicks off series of Sunbelt upsets, Monarch gets another chance Saturday in Virginia
story link Norfolk, Virginia – Last week, Appalachian State upset No. 6 Texas A&M in front of 92,664 fans in College Station, Texas, as Marshall beat No. The Sun Belt Conference had its best football weekend ever. Home from Nebraska on the W. But let’s not forget it was the Old Dominion where things started in Week 1 when the Monarchs beat Virginia Tech 20-17. ODU has garnered a lot of attention…
