De Salses a Guardamar i de Fraga a l’Alguer: les comarques de parla catalana una a una. 5/88: l’Alta Cerdanya (Northern Catalonia).
Alta Cerdanya (“High Cerdanya”) is the northern half of the Cerdanya, a natural district that was divided in two with the Treaty of the Pyrenees, a treaty signed in 1659 between France and the Spanish monarchy in which Spain gave all their territories north of the Pyrenee mountain range to France. That treaty is the reason why, while most of Catalonia remains under Spanish rule, there is a part called Northern Catalonia that is under French rule.
Obviously, Spain didn’t think of asking the Catalans what they thought of getting their lands divided, and the inhabitants of Northern Catalonia were not happy about being separated of the rest of their country and forbidden from speaking their language, having their traditional institutions taken away, and being heavily taxed. For these reasons, the peasants organised different revolts against France, most famously the Revolta dels Angelets de la Terra.
Nowadays the Alta Cerdanya is, together with Capcir, the district of Northern Catalonia with more ski stations. It’s also notable for having the Odelló Solar Furnace, which is the world’s largest solar furnace together with Tashkent (Uzbekistan).
