My current most controversial take

This? Is not his swim form.

What do I mean by that? Am I crazy? Let’s take a look.

Here’s a player Octoling swim form.

Here’s a rival Octoling/Octazon swim form.

The latter is probably more accurate to what he is based in part on the eye color there and the fact just most Octolings in the army there are Octazons rather than the smaller, player-type Octoling (which I refer to as ringed Octolings because of their iridescent ring patterns on their tentacles but this isn’t about my head canon the player Octolings are small because they’re based on blue-ringed octopuses while Octazons are giant pacific octopuses, THAT would be a separate post). An argument could be made that he looks more like the player Octoling swim form because his tentacles have a paler ventral side and the tentacles are much larger in general, but we’ll get there.

Anyway, in either case, notice anything?

His suction cups are on the dorsal side of the tentacle while the player swim form has suction cups on the ventral side (sorry Octazons, your swim form doesn’t have suction cups at all so you don’t get to be here for this). Octavio’s suction cups are in the same orientation as an Octoling in their Octoling form.

This alone is enough to be suspicious, but there’s more.

Size inconsistencies aside, no matter where or how you look at this, he’s big. His sizes range from about 5-8 feet. Since it’s a 3D model rather than 2D, this sizing choice is intentional and deliberate, so his size is likely a variable (which is fair since octopuses in real life do puff up to scare off foes by appearing much larger and more threatening than they really are). Swim forms for everyone else are typically a bit smaller than their turfling forms, so unless Octavio’s Octoling form is in the ballpark of 8’6”, I’m thinking something else is going on here.

Personally, my theory is that this is a stage somewhere in-between swim and octoling form. We know from the art book and a few interviews that canon Octavio cannot return to his Octoling form because he was too badly injured in the great turf war to maintain that form, it could be that this is just the closest he can still get. So he’s about the same size as his Octoling form (unless he’s being a dramatic puffed up cat about it and wants to look big huge), or at least as close to that as he can get, and he has a few traits like his tentacles being more dexterous and being used more akin to arms and legs, but just looks like an octopus.

Anyway tune in next time when we try to figure out if his mouth in that halfway form is beneath his crossed arms or between his “legs” because I gotta say I have bad feelings about that and don’t want an answer.
