🐙 Because an octopus is so smart, it only took 3 tries to train Rambo the octopus at Kelly Tarlton's Sea Life Aquarium how to use a waterproof digital camera to take photos of tourists. A smart dog by comparison would take dozens of times to train. 📃 Octopus aren’t as good at contract negotiations though as the aquarium was only charging $2 per photo. . . . ________________________________________ #octographer #octopus #octopusart #ocean #aquarium #fish #oceanfacts #photography #photographer #portraitphotography #camera #underwaterphotography #comicstrip (at New Zealand) https://www.instagram.com/p/B5xwwFMhvi6/?igshid=ebgqyesdmcrb

Meet the world’s first "octographer" - Rambo, a cephalopod at New Zealand’s Sea Life Aquarium who’s taking photos of its visitors.
You can see this impressive ability in action above, and watch as Rambo makes sure she doesn’t have her sucker-covered tentacles in the shot before hitting the shutter button.
Of course, Rambo isn’t the first cephalopod to perform high-level activities - not only do octopuses have mind-boggling camouflage skills, superb speed and the ability to walk on land, they can also use tools and, apparently, predict soccer games.
But, as far as we’re aware, this is the first time an octopus has been trained to take photos. The project is part of a collaboration between the aquarium and Sony, who provided Rambo with the camera and its special underwater casing that's lowered into her enclosure. Then, when spectators line up against a specially provided backdrop, she's able to use her dexterous tentacle to push the red shutter button, and take better photos than pretty much all of our parents.
I don't know about you guys, but I, for one, welcome our new octopus overlords.

Meet the octographer
Sony New Zealand made a nice move when it decided to train an octopus to take pictures of its visitors.
Tumblr media
at Kelly Tarlton's Sea Life Aquarium in Auckland, Rambo  snaps photographs of visitors by pressing on a bright red button to activate a camera, held securely in a specially-designed rig. Visitors paid $2 for the privilege of having their picture taken by the octographer.

Rambo learned to press the button at the sound of a buzzer in about three attempts. But while she picked up the trait so quickly, she earned her name by fighting with the camera and the rig, crushing or tearing apart both, much to the chagrin of the people working on the project.

WORLD’S FIRST | O C T O G R A P H E R
Listening to NPR Radio on my way to work the other day, I heard the story of Rambo. To promote their water-resistant camera, Sony recently teamed up with the Sea Life Aquarium in New Zealand to teach an octopus named Rambo to take pictures of visitors from inside her tank. It only took her 3 tries to understand, as opposed to a dog who needs at least 7. It’s pretty neat of Sony to shed light on an issue, while also promoting their new camera. Whether or not they intended to, they exposed the intelligence of a creature most people see as beneath them.
ANIMAL | INTELLIGENCE
Most human beings have an ego that consists of our species on the top of the pyramid and the rest of the “animals” below us. I’ve also heard numerous stories of elephants and their little-known range of emotions. We have set the bar exceedingly high for recognizing emotions (other than anger and fear) in other animals. Scientists must decide to observe and research the behavior in a testable and repeatable manner, and only then can it be accepted as truth. Scientists have determined elephants have emotional contagion, meaning they are empathetic when they see another elephant in distress. They have been known to comfort, protect, and mourn for each other. In her book Animal Wise, Virginia Morell talks to scientists around the world about animal intelligence.  Although human cognition remains uniquely profound, evolution guarantees that it has a long history, and Morell makes a fascinating, convincing case that even primitive animals give some thought to their actions.
I will have to add her book to my reading list. Learning about animal intelligence is extremely important. It allows us to understand more about the world around us, and how we came to evolve into the animals that we are. We must use our brains, filled with compassion and empathy, and treat animals how we would treat each other. Am I saying we should all be vegetarians? No. But there is no need to cause suffering and be ignorant of the species around us who know more than we give them credit for.
Discovery goes over 10 surprising facts about animal intelligence here.
