25 Questions About Bloody Painter
1. Birthday? Height? Physique?
Born on October 1, 1980, under the Libra sign.
In the current storyline, he's about 26 years old.
He stands 178 cm tall with a well-built physique.
2. Favorite food and drink?
He loves sweets and cocoa; basically, he enjoys all kinds of chocolate.
In all official works, the brown drink you see him consuming is not coffee but cocoa.
3. What kind of scent does he have?
He uses perfume to mask the smell of formalin used in specimen preparation or the rusty smell of blood.
His preferred scent is oceanic.
4. His MBTI?
INTJ.
5. Preferred clothing style?
He likes simple and sleek outfits, often wearing colors in calm tones.
Also, the blue jacket he usually wears isn’t a trench coat; it’s a suit jacket.
6. Does he smoke or drink?
He doesn't smoke or drink because he finds the smell of smoke pungent and dislikes the bitter taste of alcohol.
If he has to drink, he prefers fruity soda-like alcohol or sweet cocktails that barely taste like alcohol (he has childlike taste preferences). His alcohol tolerance is average.
7. Does he listen to music? What genre?
He listens to almost anything and becomes particularly interested in music with unique styles from an artistic appreciation standpoint.
8. How does he kill?
He's a clean freak and dislikes making a mess at crime scenes.
His methods focus on easy cleanup, avoiding unnecessary torture of his victims.
9. Does he cook for himself? What type of dishes does he usually make?
He’s good at household chores and can prepare common Western dishes.
10. Favorite color?
Blue.
11. Does he watch TV shows or movies? What genres does he like?
Yes, he enjoys anything with innovative themes or visual techniques.
However, he dislikes romance dramas because he can't understand or relate to love, which makes them boring for him.
12. Is he a light or heavy sleeper?
He’s a night owl and a light sleeper, which causes his prominent dark circles.
13. When does he wear gloves?
He only wears gloves when handling objects or when he doesn’t want to leave fingerprints.
14. Preferred medium for painting?
For his public art, he prefers oil paints for oil paintings.
As for those darker pieces, he might mix in victims' blood or other substances.
15. Does he smile when he’s in a good mood?
Yes, but it’s rare for anyone to see it. Also, when he’s shy, he tries to hide his emotions by looking away, but his flushed cheeks and ears give him away.
16. Regarding character pairings?
In the 2018 version update, all pairings with other authors' OCs were removed to keep his story realistic. He is currently single.
However, fans are free to create any pairings in their fanworks.
17. Defining trait?
Selfishness.
18. Sexual orientation?
He identifies as agender, meaning he doesn’t feel tied to any particular gender. His attraction to others is based purely on his mood and feelings.
To put it simply, he doesn’t care about gender.
Also, agender ≠ asexual; he still has sexual desires but finds it difficult to develop intimate relationships due to his cautious nature (which likely means he's still a virgin).
19. In terms of intimacy?
He behaves gently and gentlemanly, but he has a deep-seated violent streak.
If his partner consents, he may become more dominant and leave marks, enjoying the sense of control.
20. Does he have possessiveness towards his partner?
Yes, but he respects his partner, so he wouldn’t try to control or limit them.
However, it’s clear when he’s jealous!
21. What was his childhood like?
He suffered severe mental abuse from his controlling mother, leaving him psychologically shattered, though his body bears no signs of physical abuse.
For more details, refer to the 2018 version story animation: https://youtu.be/AaHgY62-ggI
22. Would he make a good father?
Since he never experienced a normal family life, he doesn’t believe he would be a good father and doesn’t aspire to become one.
He thinks, "The world doesn’t need another me." However, he would make a great older brother or mentor.
23. Ethnicity and nationality?
The official story doesn’t specify his nationality, but he is ethnically white.
24. Is he really afraid of cockroaches?
He’s not afraid of insects and even makes insect specimens.
His fear of cockroaches stems more from his germaphobia than the insect itself, as he perceives them as dirty creatures.
25. Any other tidbits?
● He values manners, so he avoids cursing. Still, in moments of stress, he might accidentally let out a quiet curse.
● When he’s alone and relaxed or happy, he hums to himself.

With compliments from, the Directorate General of Public Relations,
Government of the Punjab, Lahore Ph. 99201390
No.1064/Zafar/Umer
HANDOUT (A)
CM Maryam Nawaz Sharif Launches Climate Leadership Internship Program
LAHORE, 09 October 2024:
Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif launched the CM Internship Climate Resilient Leadership Program. CM Maryam Nawaz Sharif inaugurated Pakistan's first smog hotline "1373". The Chief Minister directed to ensure one percent fund for plantation in the development project. She announced to increase the honorarium of Climate Change Leadership Internship Program from 25 thousand to 60 thousand and directed to plant trees across the road sides during construction and repair of roads. She also directed to introduce the ‘theme of smog’ from October 15 to November 15 in the schools across Punjab.
CM Maryam Nawaz Sharif while addressing the ceremony said, “Climate diplomacy with the India Punjab. The effects of smog are the same on both sides, so Pakistan and Indian Punjab should launch start similar measures to eliminate it. Smog will end not by merely pressing a button, rather by undertaking collective efforts. Everyone should know about the importance of smog elimination. My primary vision in Punjab is youth development. When the interns were informed about giving Rs. 25,000 honorarium then it was realized that the amount is inadequate. Even 60,000 rupees are inadequate for the internship program. I felt pleased to see the interns coming from different districts of Punjab. I have also directed to ensure jobs security of children after their internship program. The environment leader should get a job in the field of environment so that the children can fully benefit from education and training. The interns should be placed in Environment and Forest Departments.”
The CM said, “It is also the responsibility of the institutions to provide job links for jobs in other departments. In the past, the Environment Department was treated as a defunct department. Environmental internship is not a job but a sacred responsibility. It gave me a sense of importance of greenery on coming out of the death cell in the prison. Protecting the green environment bestowed by Allah Almighty is a great responsibility of all of us. The interns will not only improve the environment but also make the cities environmentally safe. Marriyum Aurangzeb and her team worked beyond my expectations. Alhamdulillah, Punjab Government launches a new project every day and its implementation is ensured as well. I am the daughter of Nawaz Sharif who never made any false promise to the people. Nawaz Sharif always fulfilled his promises whatever he made with the people.”
She added, “Environmental protection is not the responsibility of a single department or a single province, but the responsibility of the entire Pakistan. 25 crore people should jointly solve the problem of environment. A nation cannot develop without infrastructure development. Those who think of development without infrastructure development can be deemed as ignorant. One percent of plantation in the development project has been included in the SOPs. Doing cruelty to animals is the practice of uncivilized nations.”
The Chief Minister said, “Immediate action is being taken when incidents of animal cruelty come to light in Punjab. In Punjab, a person who cut off the leg of a donkey was apprehended caught and put in jail. One of the hallmarks of a civilized nation is how it treats animals. By the grace of Allah Almighty, air quality index is improving. Smog does not last from October to February, but throughout the year. We will have to remove obstacles confronting for the improvement of environment. Smog causes breathing problems and eyes damage. The smog becomes so dangerous that even schools and offices have to be closed. Children are suffering from respiratory diseases because of smog. Complications of respiratory diseases arise due to smog problems in children. We will have to take multiple measures for the elimination of smog. Every child in every house should be apprised about the knowledge for the smog elimination. Eradication of smog is a question of life and health of our children.”
She said, “Smog awareness will be taught as a subject in schools. The implementation of the action plan for sustainable measures to reduce smog has started. An end-to-end action plan has been formulated to eliminate smog and smog will reduce in the coming days. A warning was given for the black smoke coming out of the brick kilns and after the warning it was demolished for committing violation. We don't want to spoil anyone's livelihood, but action has to be taken with a heavy heart against those who pollute the environment. Cameras have been installed on chimneys in the industries, whose surveillance is being done in the monitoring room. In case of smoke emission, an immediate call is being made to the industry control room. Monitoring of environment through drone digital inspection, CCTV is also ongoing. The fat melting factories are not only polluting the environment, but people are being poisoned as well.”
CM Maryam Nawaz Sharif stated, “Political pollution is not visible but destroys the country. Protest, siege, burning are wrong traditions. Now inflation has reduced to 9% from 38% and has to be done for ensuring it. I always think about the well-being of people while sitting on a chair. I want to make Punjab full of opportunities for the new generation so that they don't need to go abroad for employment. If inflation is going down then protest from KPK has to be brought to check it. During the protest, police personnel from KPK have been arrested who invaded Punjab and Islamabad police. The martyred police personnel was someone's father and someone's son and what was his fault?”
The CM said, “Prime Minister of Malaysia visited Pakistan and now SCO is going to start and now they are striving to lodge protests once again to portray bad image of Pakistan. One province is invading the federation with full equipment. Their politics is getting buried due to low inflation. The country is progressing by leaps and bounds. By working for someone, the life of the poor is being facilitated and they neither work themselves nor allow others to work for the poor. Those who spread political smog had to face failure and the people did not give any response. If the people get relief, no one cares about such people.”
She said, “Come what may, we will not let any harm to be done to our country. Everyone will see a developing, flourishing Punjab. For the first time, a scholarship worth Rs. 40 billion has been launched for education. The government will pay the fee in case of not being able to pay fee in case of getting enrolment in the university. She inspected the Mobile Air Quality Monitoring Station.
Senior Provincial Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb in her address informed about the measures being taken for the environmental improvement. She apprised that for the first time in Punjab, vehicle inspection system has been introduced. The Senior Minister informed that the Punjab government is going to implement first comprehensive plan in order to cope up with climate change and elimination of smog. She disclosed that on the directions of CM Maryam Nawaz Sharif, the monthly honorarium of the interns is being enhanced. She added that provision of funds has been ensured along with undertaking policy documentation. Marriyum Aurangzeb underscored that Punjab will lead with regard to combating hazardous climate change effects and smog eradication.
Provincial Minister for Information and Culture Azma Zahid Bokhari, Provincial Ministers Chaudhry Shafay Hussain, Sher Ali Gorchani, Sohaib Ahmed Malik, Kazim Pirzada, Ramesh Singh Arora, Ashiq Hussain, Chief Secretary, Secretaries and other officials were also present in the ceremony.

Fumikazu Ueshima (植島 史和)
Tumblr media
Apparent Age: Fifties
Birthday: October 19th, 1XXX
Gender: Male
Species: Human spirit/Demon
Height: 6 ft 2 in (187 cm)
Weight: 220 lbs (99 kg)
Voiceclaim: Kenjiro Tsuda/Crispin Freeman
Theme: Paradise Lost
The main villain. An old friend of Naoto's father who has been corrupted by the dark forces of the Underworld.
From birth, Ueshima lived a life of poverty in a poor district in the capital of Takamagahara. Considering his position in society, it's easy to understand his disdain for those who line their pockets with more money than he was worth. So when he runs into a certain Takahiro Maruyama, having the time of his life chatting up a woman no less, it's no surprise that he comes up seeking violence (slightly embellishing, slightly). In a twist shocking even himself, Ueshima eventually comes around to Takahiro when he finds out about his own dislike of the rich lifestyle. The two form an unlikely bond, one that has them following each other into Heaven-Sent Army.
Here, the two fought valiantly against demonkind and eventually earned the prestige of becoming captains of their own elite squadrons. Things couldn't have been better, until they were assigned a particularly dangerous mission. On that fateful day, they were tasked with entering the Underworld itself to investigate whether or not the realm's rulers were developing a large-scale army with the intent of invading the Mortal and Spirit Worlds.
Before their mission could be completed, they were ambushed by a certain demon knight who single-handedly decimated Ueshima and Takahiro's forces. Realizing the futility of the situation, Ueshima sacrificed himself to buy Takahiro time to escape with his life. Inches from death, the knight goes to finish him off, but is stopped by an occultist who wished to experiment with his body. Ueshima later awakens to unrelenting, agonizing pain as demon blood is pumped through his veins. The corruptive nature of the substance changes him entirely, leaving him nearly unrecognizable both physically and psychologically.
He is then presented to the king of the Underworld as a marvel of occult research and possibly the greatest asset of their army. Wishing to test his might, the king tells him to draw his weapon. Before a single onlooker can blink, Ueshima slices him in two. His strength as an elite captain combined with his new demonic powers had turned him into an untamable beast of a warrior. No one dares to avenge their former king, fearing the overwhelming power they had just witnessed. Ueshima then usurps the throne, a plot brewing in his broken, possessed mind...
His appearance has changed dramatically due to the infusion of demon blood in his veins. The entire right side of his torso and face have turned an unnatural shade of black, which seems to be slowly creeping over to consume the rest of his body. His right arm has developed sharp beast-like claws. The sclera of his eye has also turned black, with a small iris now glowing red. The hair on his corrupted side has become completely white.
What used to be regret and sorrow in his heart is now blind, misguided hatred born by the corruption spreading throughout his body. He is motivated by the prospect of bringing ruin to Takahiro Maruyama for his "betrayal" all those years ago, and would even unleash the fires of the Underworld upon the Mortal and Spirit Worlds if it meant taking his life.
Despite such intense emotions, he shows none of it. He appears and sounds entirely emotionless unless faced with even the smallest remnant of the man he wishes to wring the life from.

CTS B Question 2 (Week 12)
Looking back at the activity done in Week 10, my artistic vision statement was “I aspire to be a designer who can work for something that I love and have passion for. I hope to be able to develop my distinct style that can easily be recognised as my own by other people the moment they see my work.”
I think that my artistic vision statement can be correlated with the topic covered in weeks 4 & 5’s lesson on Analysing Artistic Traditions and Lineages. An example of a work of design under this theme would be National Language Class (1959) by Chua Mia Tee.
Tumblr media
This painting was done using oil on canvas, with its dimensions being 112 x 153 cm. Chua Mia Tee is regarded for having a social realism painting style and his illustrations on Singapore's progressing cultural and urban landscape. This particular painting is one of his most iconic paintings as it features a group of Chinese students learning Malay, one of Singapore’s newly chosen national languages at the time, making it a crucial stage in Singapore’s history.
According to an article by the National Arts Council, “Chua is renowned for his oil paintings of scenes of traditional life and significant events in Singapore’s history.” By revolving his works around iconic events in Singapore and having a clear focus, Chua Mia Tee was able to strengthen his identity as an artist, making his works eminent.
Some other artists that have art styles that also fall under the category of social realism include Wee Kong Chai, Lim Yew Kuan, Lee Boon Wang, and Tan Tee Chie. However, even though these artists have the same category of art style when compared side-by-side, there are still aspects of each artist’s work that distinguish them from the other in terms of the chosen colour scheme or brush strokes, making them each unique regardless.
An example could be seen in the first work below titled "Working Class Family" by Wee Kong Chai, whereby he uses a lot of cool-toned colours in his paintings. His brush strokes are also rougher and more distinct in comparison to other artists like Lee Boon Wang and Chua Mia Tee.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As such, this lesson’s topic on Analysing Artistic Traditions and Lineages has helped me examine various artists and the style they use in their artwork, as well as the meanings behind them, constituting their overall art style for which they are known.
This, in turn, has helped me realise the kind of aspects that make up a designer’s art style, allowing me to further reflect on the kind of work I want to produce, the mediums I would want to use, and the kind of messages I would want to portray. By asking myself these questions, I am reformulating what I want to focus on and accomplish as a designer.
Word Count: 473 words

"Christen Dalsgaard (Danish painter) 1824 - 1907
Peasant interior with a young girl reading a letter by the window, 1852

Exhibited: Presumably Charlottenborg 1852 no. 107 with the title “En ung pige, der læser et brev” (A young girl reading a letter).
The work 'A Young Girl from Salling Reading' (1851) at the Hirschsprung Collection in Copenhagen is a preliminary work for this painting.
* * *
Christen Dalsgaard was a Danish painter, a late student of Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg.
The son of the estate owner, Christen Dalsgaard was born on 30 October 1824 at Krabbesholm Manor near Skive in Jutland. He showed early signs of artistic talent, and received training as a craft painter. In spring 1841 Niels Rademacher, a visiting landscape painter, encouraged the young artist and convinced his parents of their son's talent.
Later that year he traveled to Copenhagen and began his art studies at the Royal Danish Academy of Art (Det Kongelige Danske Kunstakademi) in October 1841. In December 1841 he began private studies with painter Martinus Rørbye. These last until 1847.
In 1843 he began his studies at the Academy's freehand drawing school, and the following year at the Academy's plaster school. Home during the summer and holidays he busied himself by filling sketchbooks with studies of the local landscape, costumes and way of life. These formed a lifelong basis for his art. He also began collecting local folk costumes, another lifelong interest.
In 1844 Dalsgaard cames under the influence of Niels Lauritz Høyen, art historian, who held a famous lecture "On the conditions for a Scandinavian national art's development" ("Om betingelserne for en skandinavisk nationalkunsts udvikling"). Høyen called for artists to search for subject matter in the folk life of their country instead of searching for themes in other lands, such as Italy (which was at that time considered a requirement for an artist's training). Dalsgaard was a loyal follower of Højen's artistic ideals, and forwent the customary journey to Italy, choosing rather to concentrate on themes closer to home.
In March 1846 he began at the Academy's model school under professors Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg, J. L. Lund og Martinus Rørbye.
He had his exhibition debut at Charlottenborg in 1847, and continued showing there every year with few exceptions.
In 1855 he painted his first altarpiece at the church in his hometown of Skive. He goes on to paint a number of other altarpieces in the years to come.
Christen Dalsgaard, like his contemporaries Julius Exner and Frederik Vermehren, painted primarily genre paintings, national romantic folk scenes rooted in the grasslands of Jutland. He paid great attention to details– folk costumes, manners and habits of the people, architecture and landscape. He was a storyteller. His artistic works, as well as those of his contemporaries helped open the way for more realistic paintings in the late 1800s. A collection of his work can be found at the Skive Art Museum. Other paintings can be found, among other museums at the National Museum of Art.

One of the Canvases that touched the Human Heart: An Art Review of Alice Neel's "Nancy and Olivia"
Alice Neel (1900-1984) was an American painter and activist known for her depictions of “capturing the zeitgeist” of 20th century life. She produced various oil paintings and has used various themes including protest, activism, families, and ordinary people (The Met Museum n.d.). Neel was famous for being an Expressionist in her art which is an art style wherein the focus is how effective the final output is in capturing the subjective emotions of various elements that are seen all around the artwork. In order to do this, the artists pay special attention to figuring out how to distort their subject matter and the objects surrounding them to exaggerate the particular emotions that they want to emphasize (Britannica 2020). One of Neel’s works about family, specifically motherhood, is entitled Nancy and Olivia which is an oil painting that she made back in 1967 about her daughter-in-law. This features a mother sitting sideways with her legs crossed on a white wooden chair while she is embracing her baby close to her whose cheek is touching hers. The woman is wearing a moss green dress with white and purple pattern on its sleeve; and the baby is wearing a long-sleeved seafoam green dress with blue vertical stripes. Both the baby and the mother are looking directly at the viewer with eyes wide open and eyebrows raised as if they were startled by whoever is looking at them. Surrounding them are a white floor and wall which can be seen in the background. At its right side, an opened door showing a steel pitcher on top of a wooden chair is seen.
Tumblr media
Nancy and Olivia (1967) by Alice Neel; 99.1 × 91.4 cm
Through the application of the features of expressionist art aforementioned, Neel was able to capture a short yet powerful moment of a mother’s action. In this work, the mother looks tired based on the bags under her eyes yet remains alert towards the viewer as she holds her baby close giving this impression of being protective. Such an emotion being communicated from a single glance in an ordinary scene also informs the viewers a great deal on the demands of motherhood. This can also be traced back to the life of the artist herself having to deal with a loss of a child due to sickness, going back and forth to unhealthy relationships which led to her mental breakdowns, and in the end having to raise her two sons all on her own while pursuing her passion in becoming an artist (NMWA n.d.). Such an experience in her Neel’s life could also have played a crucial role in depicting an almost accurate representation of how the stress that comes along in being a mother looks and feels like.
Alice Neel’s Nancy and Olivia is one of the expressionist artworks which proves that a single look, or even a small detail about a person’s body language - can say so much about not only what the subject matter at hand might be feeling, but also the amount of experiences it took for them to have reached that point in their emotions. Despite the expressionistic art’s lack of detail of all elements being as realistic as possible, the expression being communicated remains true - which in this case, is especially effective towards viewers who are mothers. Such a demonstration made by Neel is one of the many examples to what made Expressionism beautiful. The depiction of people may change throughout the years of developing the methods of art making, but no shift in representation of any form can take away this aspect of art to reveal something “human” which, in expressionism, is the human being’s ability to feel.

Adèle Haenel Marie Claire Japan, October 2020
‘Portrait of a Lady on Fire’ will be released in Japan on 4th of December, 2020.
See here for the PDF / full article in Japanese.
[h/t @mlleclaudine]
***
UPDATE [29 Oct 2020]
w/ big thanks to @rosedelosvientos for the translation
"Now, the most-watched French actress Adèle Haenel's charm at full throttle"
[October 15 Marie Claire Style] "Portrait of a Lady on Fire", which won Best Screenplay at last year's Cannes Film Festival and garnered the highest praise from actors such as Charlize Theron, Brie Larson, Xavier Dolan and other shining movie stars of today, will finally be screened in Japan this coming December. The heroine is played by the very talented actress Adèle Haenel, who won two César Awards (the French version of the Academy Awards), and is now receiving quite a lot of attention in France. We ask her, she who has a model-like physique of 175 cm and beautiful eyes possessing a strong-will, about the allure of her new film.
In the 18th century where cameras were non-existent, and of course no smartphones, European aristocrats used portraits of their sons or daughters in place of photos as an introduction to their potential marriage partners. "Portrait of a Lady on Fire" depicts the romance between a female painter and an aristocratic family's daughter over a portrait, and is up-and-coming female French director Céline Sciamma's newest opus. The screenplay that the director herself wrote was adapted into film for the role of heroine to be performed by Adèle Haenel. "It had the potential to be a great work, and I felt that the responsibility was serious." Adèle recounts the first time that she read the script. "I've collaborated with Celine for quite a long time, so for me this is a very special piece of work. That's because it's a testament to how much she trusts me. "
Adèle, who debuted when she was 12 years old, appeared in Sciamma's "Water Lillies" (2007), garnered high praise for her performance, and at a young age was nominated at the César awards. Since then, the two have become partners in public and in private, and during the awards ceremony in 2014, came out publicly regarding their relationship (at present they are separated). Currently she is 31 years old, but has already appeared in more than twenty films, and as a leading young actress she is well-loved in France. Furthermore, she accused film directors last year for sexual harassment that she suffered when she was younger; in February of this year, she protested when Roman Polanski won Best Director at the Césars; she is also known as the driving force behind France's '#Me Too' movement.
The stage of her newest film is set in 18th-century northern France, in a solitary island in Brittany. The daughter of an aristocratic family, Héloïse (Adèle Haenel)'s portrait was commissioned to Marianne (Noémie Merlant), a painter, who secretly completes it under the guise of a walking companion; however, Héloïse disapproves of the completed work. Marianne thus requests to redo it within five days. During this time, the two open their hearts to each other, a friendship blossoms, and before they know it, develop feelings far beyond it.
"It's a film about love towards the same sex. It differs from romance between a man and a woman where one dominates, and the aspect where two people are equal in a romance is very important. From there a special romantic feeling and eroticism, imagination expands further. With no rehearsals, I invented a new melody within my lines (in the script). I wanted to pursue, in an artistic way, Héloïse's journey from a passive into an active existence."
After her older sister's death, Héloïse was made to return home from the monastery. She is forced into marrying instead of her sister, however she just could not accept it. "Héloïse knows absolutely nothing about her fiancé. Even though it's her own life, she feels like why is it that she has no right to make decisions? Trying to avoid this marriage is her own way of rebelling against the world that has nothing to do with her."
On the other hand, there is Marianne, who, as a painter, is treading the path of her own life. She is shown as a modernistic woman but, during the 18th century there were actually a lot of women painters who existed. Focusing the spotlight on these women whose existence were erased from history is also another important aspect of the film. "It may seem like the 18th century is being shown in a contemporary light, however, historical facts aren't changed. Céline strove towards looking at historical facts without bending them, through a different perspective and a new form of emotional expression. I think that's why you can feel that this is a contemporary film."
While this piece is a delicate romance film that depicts that inexplainable state of mind when falling in love, one can also say that it is a social film: marriage, career, abortion, eating habits, smoking, literature, music, etc. - everyday life seen through the female gaze - and is thus also a powerful, piercing feminist film. The director herself references Nietzsche - lyrics that she wrote in Latin are sung by a female chorus repeatedly, a breathtaking theme; music by Vivaldi, an old castle, simple but elegant clothing, the picturesque scenery of the coastline of Brittany - everything is at its most beautiful, and wrings one's heart.
Film Information "Portrait of a Lady on Fire" Director & Script: Céline Sciamma Performers: Adèle Haenel, Noémie Merlant Screening Date: December 4, 2020 (Friday) @ TOHO Cinemas Chanter, Bunkamura Le Cinéma, other movie theaters nationwide TBA Distributed by: GAGA https://gaga.ne.jp/portrait/ Original article in Japanese: https://www.afpbb.com/articles/marieclairestylejp/3308645

The distinct advantages of using PHP-Symfony Framework
Tumblr media
Why use Symfony?
When you want to build and deploy an application at high speed, you need a good framework. Since PHP is the most popular web application development language, we recommend Symfony as a suitable framework for development ventures.
Why? Because Symfony offers many distinct advantages and, is particularly well suited for enterprise-level projects. You have many options like Laravel, Yii, Symfony, CodeIgniter, and so on. But if you ask us- we would vote for Symfony.
A PHP application's standard foundation is Symfony. It offers a set of reusable components that may be utilized in other applications. About 30 decoupled and reusable PHP components, called Symfony Components, are utilized to create this application.  Because Symfony eliminates reactive coding tasks, it is especially suitable for enterprise-driven complex applications. As a developer community, Symfony was renowned for its friendliness and availability. Developers may add their modules to the framework because it is available under an Open Source license.
On October 18, 2005, Symfony, a free software project released under the MIT license, was available for download.
Using Symfony for Startups
Startups can benefit a lot from using Symfony as it speeds up software development. Here are some other advantages Symfony offers:
1. Solid support for the Framework: Symfony is one of the few frameworks backed by Sensio Labs. They invest in the framework's development and works towards its improvement. They use Symfony for their own business as well!
2. Unrestricted: Symfony has a lot of helpful features. Its capacity for building bundles and components is robust.
In Symfony, a bundle is a collection of PHP, JavaScript, CSS, or Twig files that describes a certain feature or group of features. Bundles are simple to create and maybe reused for many applications, lowering total development costs.
A component is a general feature that allows developers to concentrate on particular business aspects. There are 30 useful Symfony components to assist developers. Components can be used separately and, new modules are added easily.
3. Real-life proof:  Unlike others, the Symfony framework has been used in numerous projects. Many software businesses use Symfony and, many frameworks & CMS use Symfony as the foundation.
4. Consistency:  Symfony is a well-maintained framework. Recent versions include long-term support and compatibility with subsequent releases up to 3 years for some.
5. Testing:  Every new line of code may introduce problems. One should use both functional and unit testing to create more dependable apps. Symfony has both. Symfony interacts with PHP Unit to enable testing. Unit tests are used to test single class behavior.
Functional tests examine a web application's levels of integration.
6. Supportive community: PHP developers love Symfony. The community is big, and there are numerous sites on the internet to get helpful tips and lessons. There are many more Symfony-themed events. Over 600,000 developers from over 120 countries make up the Symfony Community, all dedicated to helping PHP achieve the unimaginable.
7. Documentation: When we learn about new technology, we look for documentation. The best documentation we've ever seen is in Symfony. So understanding the framework itself is quick, and experts can easily keep up with new developments.
Why Symfony is the Best Choice for Business
● The finest option for companies to develop applications. It is quick and light on the system.
● It allows businesses to build basic or sophisticated apps.
● Its flexibility allows businesses to add new features as needed.
● It can also build big corporate websites.
● It provides a long-term project.
Advantages of Using Symfony
Using Symfony comes with several benefits. Let’s run through them quickly.
1. Faster Implementation
One of the most compelling arguments in favor of using a framework is the ability to build applications quickly. Symfony's modular architecture and reusable components were created to make it easier for developers to create applications in a shorter amount of time.
You may need to perform a comparative study of many different kinds of project frameworks before making your final decision on which one to use.
According to recent research, Symfony, a prominent PHP framework, is roughly three times faster than Zend in terms of performance. It takes a fraction of the memory available than its rivals and has more realistic needs.
2. Components Never Go Waste
Symfony is developed on top of the Model-View-Controller (MVC) architecture (Model View Controller). MVC, often known as the Model-Controller-View paradigm, is a PHP application framework that is used to develop web-based applications.
The concept of Reusable Components serves as the foundation for this framework. Stakeholders of the companies using Symfony are happy since the TMM, or Time to Market, for their projects has been reduced as a result of the usage of Reusable Components by developers. Code testing is not only more efficient, but it is also simpler and faster. Because of Symfony's modularity, the framework is both very powerful and extremely practical at the same time.
3. Twig- One of the Best Template Engines
Twig is a contemporary template technology that assists developers in creating simple and concise scripts. It is one of the fastest and most reliable PHP template engines available on Symfony today. Twix has a sandbox mode that allows untrusted template code to be examined and tested in a safe environment.
Additionally, Twig provides a flexible parser and lever that empowers developers to create their tags and filters, as well as to create their dynamic scripting language. Twig has developed into a template language as a result of these features, which allows users to modify the template design as their needs change.
4. Room for Innovation
With its unrivaled speed, reusability, and flexibility, Symfony has quickly become one of the most widely used PHP frameworks on the market. It adheres to industry standards and contains some of the most cutting-edge tools available, as well as capabilities such as Dependency Injection and dependency injection.
Another unique feature of Symfony is the web debug toolbar, which helps developers work more efficiently on the web. SensioLabs updates the debug toolbar regularly, adding new features and functionality. Before you begin creating an application, have a look at this.
5. Expandable
Symfony is a framework that can be expanded. Each bundle may add a new feature to the framework, allowing it to grow. Unused bundles may be reused in other projects, and they can be shared within the community. It is also possible to modify anything inside Symfony using the bundle system, without having to reset the whole framework. To extend the framework, the core may be changed.
6. Stability
The company's developers assist for a period of three years, but they may supply you with lifelong support for security problems. To improve stability, the business will ensure compatibility across all of its minor versions. Thus, applications built in any version of the framework will remain stable and maintain their functionality in the long term. For added functionality, it may also guarantee compliance with public APIs.
How Symfony Is Better Than Any Other Framework
1. Complex Projects
A great option for complicated web applications or apps that need non-standard features in their development, Symfony is a good choice. Examples include e-commerce online apps and video streaming devices, among others. Symfony is used by brands such as NatGeo and Daily motion to build sophisticated online applications and platforms. With Laravel, you can handle smaller projects.
2. Standardization of modularity
As a modular framework, Symfony relies on a pre-packaged set of components that may be reused to build a web application.
Laravel's architecture is a little different from that of most other PHP frameworks. When you wish to make modifications to your web application, it is more limited. As a result, developers will have to deal with the whole code instead of just the application module if they want to make a change.
3. Database Support
Data management and multitasking need a robust database management system. Within one software program, details are managed, stored, and organized. When it comes to data access, both Symfony and Laravel utilize ORM (Object Related Mapping). Oracle, MySQL, Drizzle, SQLite, SAP, and PostgreSQL are just a few of the databases that Symfony supports. MySQL, SQL Server, and Postgre SQL are the ones that Laravel supports.
4. Data Modeling
SQL expertise is required while using Laravel. In general, Eloquent tends to bind an application to a DB schema. If you alter the name of a column, your whole codebase may be affected. Symfony's Doctrine, on the other hand, makes use of a mapper pattern, which allows you to distinguish between your business objects and logic and your database schema. As a result, Symfony is superior in this regard.
Conclusion
In the words of the company's website, "Symfony is a collection of PHP Components that operate together in harmony."
On the whole, the framework is adaptable, with the fundamental goal of doing away with tedious code and saving time. Symfony's mission is to enable people to build software for their requirements. As a contemporary framework, Symfony is equipped with all the features that you would expect.

Tracy Meunier - #plant seeds of kindness
Blog Post 1 August 30, 2020
So what do you do when they tell you that you have brain cancer?
I started my career as Executive Assistant to the County Manager (thank you Mr. Allen Charles for having faith in my abilities!) on August 2, 1984.  It was 30+ degrees outside. After work I bought a fan for our 'little house on the prairie'.... Neil & I celebrated!
Tumblr media
Flash forward 36 years - and a career where I was fortunate to serve the community that has given our families such amazing support!
As an accountant, I've always tended to listen to advice - go to professional development sessions focused on building equity......save up for retirement...start a career that allows you to grow!
I made the decision to retire in early 2018. My dad was going through his cancer journey (prostrate cancer that spread in August 2018, resulting in him needing to be hospitalized). My siblings & I had an amazing opportunity to reconnect on a much deeper level as adult children with a man that we admired and adored more than words can describe. And so the new journey began - 11 months at the Barrhead Healthcare Centre and 5 months at Shepherd's Care. The goal remained constant - one day at a time, and to be thankful for each day we had together. We were so fortunate to appreciate the next 496 days together!!!
Tumblr media
At Dad's celebration of life in January 2020, Rev. David Pype spoke of the 'pillars of life':
- to have purpose
- to love
- to be loved (ie. allow yourself to let others help you, which can be difficult)
- to have hope
Flash forward to June 1, 2020 - my new retirement date!
In mid May, 2020, when we were moving cattle to pasture, I started to get dizzy. Having been diagnosed in the fall of 2019 with osteoporosis, I did what any 58 year old would do - I 'google-dr'd it and self-diagnosed as having vertigo!
Because my family doctor had moved away from the community in the fall of 2019, I needed to find a new doctor. Imagine what he must have thought when I told him I might have vertigo!
He was patient with me & suggested we try some tests first. That was my 1st day of retirement - June 1, 2020.
As the week progressed, the dizziness got worse. That Saturday, I changed my self-diagnosis to a wax build-up. I drove myself to out-patients at the hospital. Only problem was that my ears were clear. The doctor suggested a brain scan.
This brought us to June 8 and a call from the Westlock Healthcare Centre. The first scan led them to call in of the doctor for what appeared to be a possible stroke. A second scan was done and results sent to my family doctor.
The next day, June 9, the doctor's office called and asked Neil & I to come meet with the doctor the next day.
To say the news was crappy, disappointing and terrible is an understatement!!!!
The C-T scan showed a growth of approximately 4 cm x 6 cm. The doctor had been consulting with a neurosurgeon from the University of Alberta Hospital. I was booked for an MRI on June 15.
Our world as we knew it felt like it was falling apart! We needed to search for our purpose! Survival mode kicked in!
And so, on June 15, 2020 I had an MRI, which confirmed the tumor. Surgery was scheduled for June 17.
What type of cancer is it? It's called gliobastoma multiform (GBM for short). It's a terminal brain cancer. It's classified as a primary brain tumour - starting within the brain itself. It’s not thought to be caused by inherited genetics or environment - just bad luck! It is incurable and one of the most aggressive forms of brain cancer.
Tumblr media
Given the stark reality of our 'retirement time' together - there's 1 thing that cannot be taken away - HOPE!!!!!!!! Hope for research - Hope for successful trials!
It's ok to be feel cheated. To be mad, sad, angry. It's NOT ok to have pity parties.
There's a reason we are faced with the challenges that lie before us.
We need to figure it out - to find our purpose and persevere!
On June 17 I underwent surgery to remove the 'bulk' of the tumor, deep in the frontal lobe of my brain. The surgery itself caused a “retraction injury” to the part of my brain controlling movement on my left side- fortunately after a few weeks of working hard at rehab with the wonderful physio and occupational therapy team at the Barrhead Hospital I was able to use my left arm and leg again!
Tumblr media
Over the summer I have been having radiation treatment paired with chemotherapy – the gold standard of treatment for GBM.
As of August 30, I have 7 more treatments left, before I get to ring the 'bell of glory', signifying that treatment is done (watch for pics on Facebook!)
September 2020 will see a break from treatments; late October/early November will be another MRI to see how the tumour responded to the treatment and map out the next steps.
Unfortunately, the tumor will re-appear – we just don’t know when. Currently, the median time is approximately 14.5 months. However, as mentioned above, we remain hopeful for some positive results of newer trials!
Others who have had GBM include Gord Downie of the Tragically Hip (who greatly advanced the conversation about GBM and helped to 'normalize' it), Presidential candidate Joe Biden's son, Senators John McCain, and Ted Kennedy.
Why am I doing a blog? I'm hoping to normalize the conversation about cancer.
It's ok to talk about it. It may help to find our purpose. Although it’s a terrible disease, it doesn’t need to rob us of who we are or what our purpose is.
As I reflect upon my life, my family, my cancer diagnosis, there are 5 special songs/video’s I ask you to view:
Martina Mcbride In my Daughter's Eyes –
youtube
For my beautiful daughter, Sara, who wrote her Royal College exam in psychiatry on August 26. Sara has dedicated her life to serve others - my heart literally busts with a mother's pride! When I received my diagnosis, Sara and my family put their lives on hold to help me. I am forever grateful. I am excited for them to grow in their lives!
Tumblr media
 2.     Josh Groban - You raise me up.
youtube
For my kindest, gentlest son, Tyler. Tyler is an amazing son and human being. I am so proud of the man you've become!! You have so much love to share!
Tumblr media
3.     The Prayer (One World at Home version) - Celine Dion, Andrea Bocelli, Lady Gaga, Lang Lang, John Legend
youtube
In the same manner that psalms are our poems to God, this song is like a psalm to my siblings (and our theme song to 'Lindquist Lane' at our family cemetery in Mellowdale).
4. Courage - Tragically Hip.
youtube
Since my diagnosis, I've developed a link with Gord Downie. I am appreciative of his courage and gratefulness. He was a great poet that taught us lots!
5. I Will Remember You -     Sarah McLachan
youtube
This goes without saying!
What’s the name of the blog?
#plant seeds of kindness
Why the name of the blog?
As far as I go back, my family is a family of farmers.
I am extremely proud of that!
As farmers we plant, we grow, we experience success, we experience failure, we put ourselves ‘out there’, we learn resiliency.
Most importantly – WE NEVER GIVE UP!!!!!!
What's next? I’m hoping to be able to continue on with posts after treatments are done – stay tuned!!!!!
#plant seeds of kindness
I’m looking forward to hearing from you!

Deja Va: 2011 NDA Winner Rick Valicenti Recalls Two Iconic Poster Designs
Rick Valicenti is a legendary graphic designer, whose career spans the transition from analog to digital design production. Rick spoke with Cooper Hewitt curator Ellen Lupton about his design process over Zoom on October 23, 2020. Edited for clarity and length.
Ellen Lupton:  Rick, where are you?
Rick Valicenti, screenshot from a Zoom call. Rick is smiling and wearing a dark sweater. Behind him, a red car is suspended in the air for repairs.
Rick Valicenti:  I am in a garage in Toronto. This is the second day of a fourteen-day quarantine as we prepare to visit my mother-in-law, who is ninety-three years old and in assisted living. We are quarantined in a studio apartment above our friend’s garage.
I created this poster at the start of the 1990 Gulf War war. The poster was for a lecture at the Alberta College of Art, sponsored by Gilbert Paper. When asked to make a lecture poster, I thought “How do I ignore that we just started a war?” My own narrow version of history was the Vietnam war. In college, my draft card number was ninety-eight in a year they called number ninety-three or ninety-five. I wondered, “Man, did I dodge that? Should I have participated in that?” You carry those conflicted emotions if you missed the draft by good luck in the lottery, not bone spurs. The theme of my poster is deja vu, baby! Here we go again! There is a reference to world peace in the typesetting along the bottom.
Poster, Deja Vu, 1990; Designed by Rick Valicenti (American, b. 1951); Offset lithograph on textured white wove paper; H x W: 91.3 × 61 cm (35 15/16 in. × 24 in.); Gift of Ken Friedman; 1997-19-226
EL:  How was the image was created?
RV:  The image is a photograph created by myself, photographer Corinne Pfister, and her assistant, Michael Pappas. The three of us were just uncorked. We found a model of a World War II bomber, we found a globe, we got some dry ice, we hit some water on it, and we got ourselves fog. Turn on the colored gel and we are done! Shoot a four-by-five color transparency, and it is over. Lay some type down and you got a poster.
Picture the great travel posters by A. M. Cassandre and E. McKnight Kauffer. Their illustrations teetered right on the edge of modernism. You can feel Herbert Bayer in the Bauhaus colliding with these illustrators. They got modernism and geometry but they could not shed themselves. So, they brought this other flare, this illustrative painterly flare. How could I do that? I am not one of those guys. Can Paul McCartney sing Little Richard? No, not really! But he did his version and that is cool. Scream your heart out, man. So, this poster was me doing that—creating a painterly illustration with a camera.
It never mattered to me whether an idea was rendered illustratively or photographically. My ineptitude at illustration allowed me to develop another talent, which is working behind the camera as a director. You do not have to be the guy who clicks the shutter or the person who fills the airbrush. This is the directorial mode of photography. How can we use photography to play in a different realm? Advertising has learned how to do that. How does graphic design do that? We saw Herbert Matter, László Moholy-Nagy, Man Ray, and Nathan Lerner do that. They all used the tools of the moment. I am inclined to use tools of aptitude, which means if you do not have much of an aptitude for it, but you sure like it, try it!
EL:  Tell me about your poster for the opera Tannhäuser.
RV:  It’s 1988, and I’m on my own as a designer. I’m doing a poster for Chicago’s Lyric Opera, a there’s no budget. Peter Sellers is directing Tannhäuser. I meet with Peter and he is enamored with a picture of Pentecostal evangelist Jimmy Swaggart, crying on TV after he was caught visiting a prostitute in a place with striped awnings.
That photograph is black and white. Swaggart is on TV, crying. Sellers says, “This is my character.” So, I say, “Would I be able to videotape the baritone or the lead tenor and photograph the monitor?” He says, “Sure!” So, that is what we did. I blew up the image of the singer’s face. Underneath, I stretch the photo of the Bible to fill the space. Wow, you can stretch a picture! Now, what can I do with the type? I specify some Gothic type from Ryder Type Gallery. I had them stretch the type to fit the space. But, I say, leave a space for the “S” because a three-letter word that begins with an illuminated letter is sex. And then I add a couple of red dots for the umlaut.
Poster, Tannhäuser, 1988; Designed by Rick Valicenti (American, b. 1951); Lithograph on paper; 91.5 × 61.1 cm (36 in. × 24 1/16 in.); Gift of Rick Valicenti; 1995-73-3
I was as close to the director’s subject matter, his subject matter, as I could be by reenacting it and then using the poster as a document of his point of view. This design was not an affectation. It was pulling the cords and playing those chords that Peter was working with, but doing it through the medium of graphic design. That is when I really could feel a tingle inside, and that is what I wanted to go for in the future. If I do not hit that tingle, then the design is not reverberating strong enough. It does not have everything in play. Something is out of tune. That was a very seminal piece for me.
EL:  You were talking about stretching the photograph. Did you stretch the type, too?
RV:  We were right at that transition from analog to digital. I was still dependent on the typesetters. Their equipment allowed them to set your type and then fill the space that you defined. I could say, “I have X amount of inches leftover in height and width. Please take this spec and make it fit.” Today, we do that falling out of bed, but back then, you had to explain what you wanted with tracing paper and a red pencil. I would draw the shape I needed to fill, and pencil in the type.
EL:  The stretched type is distorted: the horizontals are thicker than the verticals. Was that effect considered ugly at the time?
RV:  Oh, yes, those people. Even today, there are those people. You are one of them, I think. I go there, too. There are moments for respecting the beauty of the type designer’s intent, absolutely. But sometimes there is a silly putty moment. It is like filling a pizza pan with pizza dough. You have to work it into the corners.
