Bruno, what happened to your good sense?

hiiii hello hi. so these are two NPCs from ursula’s backstory: Octavius Durga and their daughter, Olivia. Octavius is a weretiger and the headmaster of the Silverbite Academy, the order of the lycan bloodhunter training school that both ursula and sasha attended. Octavius was a bit strict and gruff, but all of the students loved them and tended to view them as a parental figure.

As is custom for the valedictorian(s) of every graduate class, Ursula and Sasha spent their required year of fieldwork training under the mentorship of their headmaster. The three remained close even after the year of field training was over, and Octavius became a family friend to the young couple. Sasha and Ursula would often babysit Octavius’s daughter, Olivia, while her parent was away on missions or busy with running the school. Olivia was energetic, rambunctious, and mischievous, but Sasha and Ursula loved her. Olivia and Ursula were particularly close, and Olivia tried to emulate her cooler, older “sister” as much as she could.

As the years went on and Olivia grew older, she became more and more interested in the academy and bloodhunting. She couldn’t wait to become a bloodhunter, and when she was 15 she formally asked to be admitted to the academy three years early (she was already a lycanthrope due to inheriting it from her parent (students of the academy are bitten and transformed into lycans upon graduation), and she had picked up plenty of knowhow from growing up around the academy grounds, so she figured she was more than ready to begin her training). Octavius, who was well acquainted with the horror and danger of being a bloodhunter, forbade their daughter from ever following in their footsteps. 

A few months later, things at the academy were starting to get weird. People started behaving very aggressively and tensions were unusually high. Ursula, being the smart gal that she was, began to figure out what was going on: Sasha, angry that he was unable to transform and jealous of  everyone around him, made a pact with the evil lycanthrope god Malar in order to get unimaginable power. This power manifested as a sort of magical rabies, which Sasha spread to most of the other lycans at the academy. When Ursula went to confront Sasha in front of Octavius, he slit her throat and devoured her body. Octavius, already beginning to feel the influences of the rabies, did nothing to stop him.

Seven years later, when Ursula came back from the dead, she eventually found Octavius, no longer infected, sheltering alone in the ruins of the academy, which had been completely destroyed. Olivia was nowhere to be found, and Octavius was unwilling or unable to explain how she died. Eventually Ursula pieced it together: Octavius had killed and eaten their daughter in the same way that Sasha did to Ursula. The horror of what they did was enough to snap Octavius out of the influence of the rabies, but it was too late. Remorseful and broken, Octavius helped Ursula hunt down Sasha and destroy Malar’s influence once and for all.

I like to think that Octavius eating Olivia came from a sense of morbid overprotectiveness. They had always worried about their daughter, like I said, and the magic rabies, like, intensifies any negative feelings that the infected lycan has (like sasha’s jealousy/anger, for example), so when Octavius finally snapped I think their mindset was “I have to protect you from yourself and from the world around you and the only way to do that is to kill you and eat you”. Hence, the comic. Plus I think after Ursula ~mysteriously disappeared~, Olivia wanted to finish what her idol started and get to the bottom of what was going on/solve ursula’s disappearance/prove herself to her parent. And I think when Octavius found out that Olivia had been sniffing around they yelled at her for always running into danger and that argument escalated until Octavius was finally fully consumed by the rabies and was like “I am going to keep you safe whether you want me to or not”.

Anyway. If you read all this i love you. I don’t think octavius is a bad person-- it wasn’t their fault what happened-- but MAN did they mess up. Literally will never forget the moment when the DM revealed what happened to Olivia lol. Someday I’ll post art of what Octavius looks like in their human form (spoiler alert: they’re a dilf).
