Choosing a solution (group)
Choosing a Solution. (group) Using the ideas generated during the ideation phase, work with your team and use one or more of the decision making methods and techniques to select an appropriate solution to your problem.
What criteria did you use to select the solution?
We wanted our solution to be something hyper-local, but scalable globally. We also wanted it to be something that was possible and distantly relevant to our areas of expertise. While deciding, we noticed a common thread occurring throughout our ideas: most of the current traffic innovations are being worked on in silos. We decided to propose a venture capital firm that would integrate these ideas to take a more cohesive view of the problem. We hope to incorporate multiple transportation solutions in order to tackle traffic in an interdisciplinary, strategic way.
How do the pragmatic and logistical concerns around implementation affect the selection of your solution?
Implementation factored heavily into our final conclusion. Many of our ideas were extremely technological, futuristic, and extremely costly/difficult to implement. As none of us are engineers or vehicle designers, we chose the option that had the most immediate and plausible implementation: a venture firm. We will be developing a business model, a budget, potential funders, prospective investments, and a website—all things that our group has experience doing.
How do you deal with compromises and coming to a consensus regarding the solution decision?
We used the Idea Potpourri technique to look at the problem. Then as we considered the best approaches to solving traffic we realized there were many options already under way. Consensus quickly formed around finding the best options among current projects, instead of reinventing the wheel, and investing in them. Our group is highly motivated to create a logical, but effective solution, and no one holds on tightly to ideas—which made consensus a breeze! The venture capital firm idea also aided the consensus, since it didn’t really compromise any idea, but brought them all into the fold instead.
Document your activities in a new post in your process journal.
