So I had some musings in the shower (where else?) to fully flesh out my theory on the origin of Au Ra (both Raen and Xaela) from the little clues we’ve been given in the MSQ and I wanted to write it down here as my “official” headcanon on Xaela origins and how they contribute to Saran’s character. Before I continue, this is only a theory/headcanon that, while supported by in-game lore, is not confirmed by in-game lore and doesn’t need to be taken as fact. I will use it as “fact” for Saran’s character, however, unless canon lore is revealed that directly conflicts with my theory (then I will adjust as necessary). I’ll keep the bulk of my musings under a read more as to not clog up your dashboards! If you like this headcanon, however, feel free to incorporate it into your own character(s) and feel let me know how it affects your character(s)! I love OC talk. ♥
Simply put, the Au Ra — both the Raen and the Xaela — are the result of significant genetic experimentation by the Allagans, very much akin to the Ixal in Eorzea. Being a very militaristic nation, the Allagans were likely to invest heavily in anything that would provide them an edge in combat. The Ixalion we see in the Fractal Continuum are the precursor to the Ixal in Eorzea, a sort of living air force that was abandoned at the fall of the Allagan Empire. Their general, an Allag woman named Garuda, spearheaded the mission and later became the focal point of the Ixal’s worship. But what about infantry? That’s where the Au Ra fit in. If you look closely, the Xaela have all the makings of a super soldier: they love to fight, they respect chains of command (the Xaela answer you without question once you defeat them at the Naadam), they are social, and they are fearless. In my theory, this makes them the “variable” group of the experiment: Xaela were more heavily modified than their Raen counterparts, who were largely left alone as a “control” group, and then closely observed. Upon closer inspection, the “bowl” in the Azim Steppe where we find the Dawn Throne actually looks very much like an ADS — I daresay identical, except that it’s only half of a sphere. The Xaela carvings on the side were either added later, or were put there on purpose by the Allagans to give their subjects a sense of familiarity and a connection to the place. My gut feeling is that if we were to descend deep into the belly of the Dawn Throne, we’d find the remnants of an Allagan observation center. Which brings me now to the entire tale behind Azim and Nhaama. Much like the Ixal, I have strong suspicions that the Au Ra “creation myth” is a misinterpretation of Allagan interference. In this case, I believe Azim to have been an Allag scientist who fell in love with Nhaama, one of the Xaela subjects. Because their love was “forbidden,” it follows in line with the Oronir belief that Azim and Nhaama were lovers who could never be together, as the sun and the moon can never share the same sky. It may even lend credence to the Oronir’s messiah complex in that Nhaama herself may have been an Oronir, and the Allag scientist who loved her could have paid special attention to the Oronir tribe to make them stronger and thus explain why they’ve held the Dawn Throne so often. It also doesn’t discredit either the Au Ra lineage of dragons or of voidsent, since both could have easily been used in the genetic engineering of the Allag. By this point, it’s entirely plausible for the Allagans to have conquered Meracydia and thus have had access to Tiamat’s genetics and those of her descendants. On the flipside, we also know from Crystal Tower that the Allagans were not above messing with some shady voidsent rituals in the name of progress. So, whichever side of the fence you are with this, both still work with this theory. It also doesn’t discredit the Mol, who don’t follow the doctrine of Azim and Nhaama and instead follow the spirits. I personally believe the shamans of the Mol clan are more akin to Padjals and that their “kami” are basically the Doman version of the Gridanian Elementals. Then there’s the Uyagir, the tribe we see holed up in the caves near the Dotharl, who believe that their ancestors’ greed cause a “calamitous event” that they must now be pennant for for the rest of their existence. Some have theorized the beginning of a calamity, though I posit that the Uyagir lost favor with their Allag overlords when a member of their tribe fought and killed one of the researchers and thus were given no more genetic enhancements. Now, what about the Raen? Well, all we know of the Raen is that they left the Doman mainland due to a “great war” and fled to Sui-no-Sato. I would not be surprised in the slightest if that war had something to do with the Xaela, perhaps even a Naadam gone too far, but sadly the nomadic Raen are even more mysterious than their Xaela counterparts. They fit as a “control” group for the Allag experiment, however, and clearly are not what the Allag would have wanted if creating a super soldier was their modus operandi. In regards to my own character, it’s how I explain her preternatural physical strength in spite of her size as well as her being a Monk without adhering to any of the spiritual aspects that the job entails. Essentially, her “chakras” are tapping into that enhanced potential that’s natrual within all Xaela and properly channeling that into increased power, instead of a devotion to Rhalgr and extensive meditation.

Entry #6 - One Day I’ll Fly, Too - Ae-ra Choi
(( Finally, I have been able to write at least one for all five of my OCs! One thing I’m definitely thankful for with this challenge.))
I am a proud member of the Au Ra race - A Raen from deep within the Ruby Sea, farrr out to the east and deep enough to where the sun is a dim reminder of the world above and yet though it was a barely visible thing in our undersea dome, my scales were seemingly blessed by the Dawn Father himself with their radiant colours - a speckling of golds and amber hues adorning my skin from head to toe. And amongst my own people, I have seen seashells and playful fish amongst their scales. Gemstones and the sea herself graces my people and even some with the colour of the Dusk Mother, and it’s beautiful to see the collage of grace and nature that we carry upon our flesh.
And yet when I came to Eorzea; when I explored all that the lands held for myself and the crew I had managed to find myself in, there was so much other types to see. The Xaela with scales of dusk and the night sky. Scales that shimmered like the deepest parts of the sea that held a hidden and dangerous beauty. Elezen that stood tall and so proud of who they are and the lands they called home. Miqo’te with beautiful adornments to furred ears atop their heads or long luxurious tails (or even those few with exceptionally long-tipped ears or short ears that seemed all the more expressive!) Even then you’ve the Roegadyn, the Lalafell, and Hyur - all fantastic and made ever so carefully by the Kami that each and every one has so much to bring to the table.
But none could hold a candle to the grace my eyes had managed to take in when I travelled through the Dravanian Forelands. Those of Ishgard had warned of their ilk. Had looked upon me with distaste and distrust for reasons I had yet to understand but when I managed to finally see those that had been behind it…. Be they nestled in their home of Anyx Trine or soaring through the air with their own scales of colours I didn’t even think to see on scales before - they had, of course, our whites and blacks but there were yellows and reds as deep and vibrant as I had ever seen. Scales of sombre blue and nourishing green.
It had taken time - far too much if you had asked my opinion - but over the months and into the year my company and I meddled in the affairs of dragons did they begin to trust us, let us closer. And so I learnt of them, learnt of their culture, learnt about who they were. And it was through my research and through their influence that my quarters now house a few other special items. Articles of garb and accessories so that I, too, can be like those that can fly through the sky and command even the air to respect them!
But for now, even without the special ornamentations and decorations of charcoal drawn upon my skin, I am ever the prouder to bear the scales that are a part of who I am.
#ffxivwrite2017#The dragon#my furry child#she loves them so much lmao#and yes she absolutely LARPs as a dragon IC#One more to go and I'm officially caught up and ready to boogie and keep on top of it again!

Lo and behold! Long time forgotten, now returned to divide and conquer!
Raen, my Dragon Commander drawn by one and only Ace.Zero I couldn't help myself and decided to base his outfit on historical garments of European emperors of 19th century. History nerd for the win!! Add a sparkle of draconic magic and flaunt here and there and voila! Raen, regal as I live in breathe. Burner of men. Emperor of Rivellon. Details under the cut
A memoir of an unfortunate beast-taming and eyes of an Ancient
Accomplished general, loving husband - and a badge for everything in-between!
Dragon-shaped polearm! Weapon choice inspired by one of the cutscenes
Did you know he is a Dragon??? Commander??
