On the second day, Quora was summoned to the Duchess’s study, along with the captain of her guard and another mercenary. A plush chaise was positioned near her desk, and on it lounged a Vashoth.

Vashoth were rare enough in Orlais, let alone in the gilded nests of nobility, that it gave Quora a shock. He knew better than to let it show, but his eyes couldn’t help lingering. It was a small resentment that the sight of his own kind had become a novelty.

The Duchess gave the Vashoth a dismissal in Orlesian. They nodded and rose from their seat.

While not quite as broad in form as the average Vashoth, their height still surpassed that of the humans present by a full foot, in addition to a pair of elegant, ivory horns. The generous gaps in their clothing revealed a well-fit body. A luscious fall of black hair obscured their expression as they slipped from the room.

“Another member of your staff?” Quora asked neutrally when the door clicked shut.

The Duchess’s painted lips curled into a smile that made Quora’s neck itch. “Bashaar is… my ward.” The guard captain twitched beside him. “If this is a problem…”

“It isn’t,” Quora said, because it wasn’t. If a Vashoth slave was enough to put him off a job, he wouldn’t have spent the bulk of his career in Tevinter.

“Then let us get to business.”

Only when the Duchess was satisfied were the three of them released. The other mercenary nudged the captain. “That’s some taste your lady’s got.”

Quora raised his eyebrow at her.

She caught his look, paled a bit, and cleared her throat. “Job’s a job, anyway,” she muttered, eyes darting away.

Quora expelled a breath through his nose and refrained from rolling his eyes.

“Bashaar is well-behaved,” the captain said, voice carefully bland. “Shouldn’t cause you any trouble.”

Quora looked down at him. The man’s eyes were hidden by his helm, but he shifted under Quora’s gaze. “Good to know,” Quora replied, with enough frost to warn him away from the subject.

“Let’s get to the tour,” the mercenary cut in. “Want to know how to get around this place.”

The guard nodded and gestured for the pair to follow him.

The Duchess was no different than any other noble to employ Quora, whatever his personal feelings. He’d take her coin and use it to avoid this shitty country for a while.

snippet saturday

been a while since i've shared some writing here. it's been busy and the juices have not exactly been, uh, flowing. anyway, i /did/ start a new WIP cuz i hate myself. this is the beginning of a series that will follow my worldstate for Quora, Bashaar, and Matteo

One thing Quora had learned in his line of work was that nobles were all the same. From the Tevinter magisters to the merchant lords of Antiva to the Ferelden Landsmeet, one noble was the same as another. That being said, Quora had a particular enmity for the Game players of Orlais.

Duchess Augustina de Renaud anticipated retaliation by a rival and thus was seeking to bolster her security. Not just more guards and Chevaliers, but professionals who specialized in subtle threats—and unaffiliated blades like Quora were more trustworthy.

Quora didn’t know about that, but he wasn’t going to spurn an offer of coin. Second thing he’d learned: don’t waste your time arguing with nobles.

Quora had worked jobs with assorted hires before. Most mercenaries knew how to avoid stepping on toes, and personal guards were used to blending in with the furniture. If there was any trouble, it would be the Chevaliers. Arrogant, inflexible pricks.

But coin was coin, and if Quora wanted to move out of Orlais, he’d need it.
