The lead curator of the Lumiose Art Museum. On the surface she seems very stern and elegant ... But she's really a very expressive, easily flustered girl 😭 she likes collecting expensive perfumes and cute vanilite themed items.

Aunt Nerine

After some shenanigans in a few inboxes I figured I might as well commit to the bit, so…

Are you having trouble with matters of the heart? Are things standing still between you and someone you care about? Do the words remain unsaid, the feelings not shown or shared?

No worries! Aunt Nerine is here to help – whether you want her or not.

(Huge thanks to @moonyasnow for all their work in making such a lovely chibi! They really did an amazing job turning my sketch and ideas into something so wonderful, and I'm so happy to see the results.)

Aunt Nerine is a fae, fairly human-sized if a bit short (about 155 cm / 5' 1"). However, even though she's a fae, her wings are not real. She actually wears them purely for the aesthetic, using magic to animate them if she's so inclined.

While she’s not as long-lived as for example the dragon fae, she has been around for a while. All that experience has left her with plenty of things up her sleeve – or on the tip of her wand, as it may be.

Aunt Nerine’s signature spell, Red String of Fate, allows her to identify mutual fondness between individuals. It also let's her know if said individuals are freely expressing their feelings to each other, or holding them back.

However, her spell doesn’t tell her the nature of that fondness, so the feelings between the people could be anything from romantic to familial or platonic.

And if there are two (or more) individuals, clearly caring for each other but not acting on it… Well, it would only be oh so kind of aunt Nerine to help the people involved take the next step.

Basically, no mutual pining is happening on her watch – and she’s got just the spells to help end such a state of affairs.

Truly, a fairy godmother to us all, just trying to usher in the happy ever afters.

It just really is a shame that some people just don’t know how to be grateful for it. (One day she'll be allowed to visit Briar Valley again. One day.)

Recently, aunt Nerine has set up a little clinic (as she calls it) on Sage’s Island, promising to attend to any matters of the heart.

Sometimes she also just wanders around the island – including the Night Raven campus – helping those she believes are in need of that little push.

Though on occasion she's just there to meet Lilia for their little tea times – though she’s always the one bringing the pastries.

Basically, what this all means is that aunt Nerine is here to throw your charas or ships into situations hopefully provide some fun fodder for scenes or imagines with your characters or ships.

So, if you'd like to see her meddle with help your ocs and ships, then please let me know! I'll then see if I can come up with something to come into your inbox with. 

You can also send your chara to my inbox and have them come in asking for help / for a consultation, or what have you.

I might also throw her into a few inboxes uninvited, but it's always easier throwing shenanigans at people when I know they're welcomed.

In short, I'm very much open to all sorts of interactions with Nerine – that's basically what she is for.

Anyone remember Nerine the psycho mermaid gf? Yeah she's one of the coolest sims I've (re)created in ts4. I don't know how I feel about that but she looks way too cool for someone so terrible.

First batch of @bug-oc bugs. This would've gotten finished sooner, but we've been sick as a dog for most of the tournament's runtime, so we're calling it a victory that we managed to get anything done - there are a lot fewer contestants this year, which means both less art to do and more ability to commit to trying to make some particularly unique creature designs - there are some in this batch that we REALLY want to do justice, and that is... unfortunately hard to do when we're barely functioning for two hours a day. This is our unofficial call to STAY HOME when you're sick! Even if you're feeling sturdy enough to go out and about, your actions can impact those around you very easily.

Design notes and owners below the cut with individual pictures - the middle one here is a beta design that we're still in the process of ironing out, so that one just has

[This is the first time I've met someone who "worked in Snakemouth" since that one... weird encounter, with those roaches giving me a job offer. I didn't know that they had a security guard position. I... didn't know that they knew what a security guard even is, honestly. To have two bugs involved with the lab turn up is an incredible coincidence. I wonder if the time portal is actually open again, or if different universes just work on different timeframes?

Regardless, it's a good opportunity to advance my knowledge of partial transmutation and multi-organism transmutation. Whatever happened to that moth in the last tournament... my understanding of how to handle both symbiotes and parasitism is clearly incomplete, if running into multiple organisms can cause problems like that. I'll have to put some extra work into monitoring...]

Omelette from @tangleslime2 was one that felt... obvious, we suppose?Your work will one day consume you, and such - one way or another! More literal in this case. A lot of the work here, honestly, is toying with shapes and body language. Omelette has a LOVELY sillhouette with some extremely identifiable clothes, and translating it to a zombee design was Very fun. Maybe a bit plain on the design side, but the linework was incredibly fun to do - we got to do a whole lot of fur, which is always a fun time. This design was very quick and easy, as designs go, and we had a lot of fun doing the hat. Wildly askew, and held on by but a single antennae!

Sundew and Nerine from @mizzle-moths are untransmuted, as requested - Sundew's pose was very fun to do - nice and fluid, though the wing markings were admittedly a bit funky to parse. We hope we got all the details correct here! Both of your bugs have gorgeous color palettes. Our usual marker set's dark gray marker's dried out by now, so we had to use an alternative, which... unfortunately bled clean through our sketchbook page. Lesson learned, we suppose. The scribble over the eyes used the same pen that we did our linework with - the "scribbling over the eyes of a dead character" trope is very well-worn, but cliche only becomes cliche because it inspires enough people to follow in the footsteps of a story, and we're very fond of the way it adds to the... hmm, visual language? We just think it's neat. Hope you enjoy!

[...working with spirits and more immaterial forms isn't my area of expertise, but it's something i dearly need experience in. My hope is that by advancing my knowledge in this field, I might be able to apply the knowledge to other fields that evade me - anything inanimate has proven to be my bane, and I'm fairly certain that a few of my attempts into this area have produced "hauntings", when they're not producing incredibly specialized organisms. Maybe if I know how to cause a haunting, I can figure out how to not cause one...?]

Moving on to our beta design - that is a VERY rough draft of Beera from @longeth-dayv. Given by the obvious Luigi's Mansion inspiration, we wanted to run with it by pulling our inspiration more directly from a Luigi's Mansion enemy - mostly, this meant tinkering with sillhouettes while trying to figure out what sort of design would match best to the character, and how to translate a design to something recognizable.

The pack, despite its significance character-wise, doesn't have quite as much weight in the balance of the design, which meant more tweaking for the transformation - though we briefly tried toying with the pack itself for this design, that particular page we felt would skew a bit too close to body horror for your personal comfort, so we scrapped the idea. Better safe than sorry, as they say. As such, we're aiming more towards using wire and body language to drive recognition.

The image here is a loose draft based on the bats enemy, used to test the fade and layering of the highlighter we were using - as it turns out, it doesn't layer very well! We started out looking for electric enemies, but we only really turned up the Electric Oozer, and that... was a bit too close to "normal boo" for our personal tastes, so we swapped to just primarily yellow enemies. Though we were previously considering taking the bat design to final draft, actually putting it out on paper convinced us to the contrary, so we went back to the... sketchboard. We'd bet there's a good chance you can already figure out where we're going with this one. A fun design challenge, for sure!

Finally (at least for this particular evening), we offer you this: a look behind the scenes, (or at least, the scenes that don't involve "us being sick and struggling to communicate whether or not something is sorted with the other mod"). What we've been using to keep track of matches, as well as to draw lots. Not precisely a high-tech solution, but damn if it doesn't work - the ends here are split into two for the sake of a loser's bracket, which we... thought we had figured out, but then it turned out we've been having miscommunications on what the bracket setups even are, and, well...

...we're working on it, we'll say. It might still be integrated, but that'll have to wait 'til trying to do things doesn't require fighting for our life. We will probably rerandomize the brackets for it, we might use it for illustration practice if the contestants are cool with it, so on and so forth. As always, thank you for your patience - we hope that Round 2 encounters slightly less hitchups compared to Round 1.

Aunt Nerine: inspiration and design thoughts

Character inspiration

Figuring out aunt Nerine was a very different process to Emi, since this time I actually was pulling inspiration from Disney (and other) sources. Like, you could pretty much say she's twisted from the general concept of a fairy godmother.

Putting together her main influences, the collection would look something like this:

(so, is now a terrible time to admit that I've seen neither Cinderella nor Sleeping Beauty? oop)

So, looking at aunt Nerine, I'm sure you all can spot the visual similarities.

A vaguely historical dress (I'll get back to this later) like the fairies from the Disney movies, hair similar to Cadsuane's, wings similar to Cupid (& Shrek's Fairy Godmother to a lesser extend), a wand, but the end is a heart like Cupid's arrow sometimes is portrayed as. She also kinda shares the sparkliness with Shrek's Fairy Godmother.

Personality-wise – she thinks she is being helpful, but she is wilful and doing what she herself wishes to do or thinks is the best course (Cadsuane anyone?). She's also... not above being petty or getting back at you if she's slighted, and also has magical power in spades. These are all traits that certainly tie to at least one of her influences.

Plus just the obvious fairy godmother -like character she has in general, even if somewhat twisted in true twst style.

More detailed design notes

Not gonna lie, I had a lot of fun putting together aunt Nerine's outfit and looks. I wanted to pull from something historical, even if I wasn't necessarily going to stick to the historical styles too closely. Still, finally putting to use all those hours watching historical costuming youtubers, lol.

A fair few pics and stuff in here, so putting this below the cut for length.

Her hair actually started off with me thinking of like an Edwardian school teacher. So very voluminous, with a nice proper bun on top. It was only later that I realized that I was kinda going for Cadsuane's hair, too, especially once I realized that I wanted to add some extra bling.

So, this was the vibe I was going for when thinking about the hair:

The wings, as I said, were pulling mostly from Cupid imagery. And while it doesn't show in her design, there's just something very funny to me in the wings being something she just wears for the looks, instead of them being an actual part of her.

Gotta have some whimsy when you've been around as long as she has, you know? (No wonder she and Lilia get along, can't remember anymore if it was dio or moony who first suggested this point but you were so right.)

For the pink collar / chest piece I was thinking of a some sort of an partlet + Medici collar combo. A partlet is basically a neck/chest covering and its own garment, so I'm thinking in aunt Nerine's case it wouldn't be a part of the dress, but something that she can swap out. The same swappability goes for the collar and for the sleeves, to keep with the vaguely 16th century fashion vibes she's got going on.

This pic is what I mostly referenced for the idea, though with a lower collar that'd still give room for Nerine's earrings & hair.

The dress itself is definitely pulling from Elizabethan vibes. This is the particular image I used for inspiration, as it shows the shapes well. A conical bodice with a curved upper edge, narrowing out to the waist with a point that emphasizes the illusion of a narrow waist – especially when combined with the full, layered skirts.

I did decide to forego the shoulder rolls and Elizabethan ruffles, tho.

As for the spider web pattern on her skirts...

Since Nerine has a bit of a sona in her too (to let out my impulses to meddle with charas getting together, lol), I wanted to give her a name somewhat reminiscent of what I go by here. I originally thought of Nerrie (a name I've used elsewhere), but in the end figured maybe we could do with a bit more separation between the creator and the creation, lol.

So, I looked for flower names starting with ner – and found Nerine, aka spider lily. And with the name the spider webs became pretty much an obvious motif to include – both because she kinda tangles people in her webs, and because she's not just all sunshine and roses and love love joy joy.
