Honestly I just wanted to write something indulgent hehe

"We don't belong here." Reynald's voice barely rose above the cadence of conversation in the palace. The hand holding his cup of wine was lightly shaking and Guilbert couldn't tell if that was nerves or anticipation. "We're the sons of a thief." "You're right about that." Guilbert nodded, feeling how dry his throat was with the gesture. He took a sip of his own wine. "You can leave if you want, brother, but I made a promise to stay with Miraina-- she doesn't have the luxury of being able to slip away tonight." They both looked toward Miraina, who was awkwardly trying to make conversation with a man that Guilbert was fairly sure was Chancellor Ocato as well as her little brother-- they were both laughing. He hoped the mirth wasn't at her expense; Miraina was only giving a skewed half-smile and didn't appear to be laughing much. Guilbert was handing Reynald his glass before he thought of it. "I've got to rescue her." He said, still looking at Miraina as Reynald blinked incredulously. It took Guilbert a few seconds to cross the room but when he made his way he put a hand on Jesan's shoulder, grinning. "Excuse me gentlemen... I was wondering if I might have a dance with the Champion?" Jesan's eyes seemed to glint in response and Ocato looked surprised-- but none of them anticipated Miraina quickly grabbing Guilbert by the hand and yanking him to where others were dancing before there was a proper response. "Woah!" He was glad he had given Reynald his glass. "Thank you--" Miraina breathed, scrambling to get into a dancing position-- any position-- with Guilbert. "I'm bein' put on display, Guilbert, they- they don't mean it but I'm the big fish they caught and are parading 'round." "Miraina... it's going to be okay." He put his hand on her waist, feeling only cold metal. "Deep breath... you look lovely in armor. You'll be fine. It's only going to be one night out of the rest of your life-- I promise." Slowly Miraina smiled as he spoke, the most genuine expression she'd had all of tonight.

i know i haven't been very active lately bc of the semester starting and life stuff in general, but thank you so much for always tagging me in your wips 🫶 anyways i wanted to ask: how has miraina's character changed from when you first thought of her to the present?

Oh do I feel that! I've started another semester of college myself, I'm manifesting that we both succeed with ease. And of course I am happy to include a friend! I don't tag every person I want to with perfect success but I tag people in my heart anyway XD

Ahh though, Miraina's character... I feel like she hasn't changed much? She's always had the same buff physique and short copper hair. I didn't ship her with Guilbert Jemane until recently, if you believe that hehe. Her gruffness also used to be a lot more genuine rather than a façade of nerves and she wasn't the Hero of Kvatch-- Jesan, her little brother, was originally my HoK. I made him in the game before Miraina but I don't remember what made me change my mind nor to create her as a character, sadly.

Miraina and Jesan being the children of farmers from Skingrad and having NAMED parents at all is a pretty new development as well and I think her backstory plus birthsign together is what turned Miraina from pure badass to the badass but with insecurities she is now XD

For Nathan it depends on what the convenience is. If he knew he was getting a comfy life out of it, oh absolutely.

For Beverly, not really. Then again, Bev isn't much interested in marriage in the first place.

For Miraina, she wouldn't even though she'd be tempted to. Convenience usually comes at a cost and Miraina finds she's not willing to pay that cost. Plus, love and all.

For Jesan, he'd rather marry out of love than convenience if pressed to marry. He's found that there's one quality you possess as a mage-- it's that you do not like convenience at all. Why would you be a mage otherwise then? Sure, magic is nice but-- the studying, oh the studying...

For Ysuha'Ko, she would marry out of convenience if she thought her suitor was pleasant enough to get along with. Studying magic independent of the Mages' Guild is not cheap and Ysuha, as a bandit hedge wizard, could use all the money she can get.

And that's okay! I appreciate you checking in with an ask. you still gave me something I asked for didn't you? Hm though, I could talk about Sheo!Jesan and at least one of the references Sheogorath makes in Skyrim to Oblivion--

I know the whole sentence is a wink and a nudge to everything your player character did/could do in the previous title but I like to think that it was also an attempt from whatever vestige of the mortal Jesan remains within to recall his former existence. He remembers Martin because Martin was important to his sister. Maybe he remembers the Grey Fox ("...blood, a Fox...") because of Fariel? I haven't quite figured out if or how Fariel knows the siblings each... And the rest, well. Sheogorath IS a daedric prince, it wouldn't have to all be personal knowledge of Jesan's.

Though imagining this makes me a little sad, heh. Jesan-- if there's anything left of him by Skyrim-- is trying to remember a sister who is no longer of the mortal coil by holding onto events that have long since passed.

while thinking of indulgent scenarios to write, I admit I giggled imagining Miraina upset and pouty that she's not only sort of lost her touch with being a criminal type post-Oblivion but that Fariel, aka someone who is still a criminal, would obviously prefer her little brother to her

Miraina: Why doesn't Fariel talk to me? I'm one of her people! Reynald: (smiling somewhat dryly) Are you though? Miraina: I'm more alike to her than my quill-pushing mageling brother! Reynald, watching Fariel and Jesan menace his twin: ....I'm not so sure about that.

For Jesan, it's the intensive nature of studying magic in of itself. Sure, one can commit crimes with spells... but first you need an understanding of those spells-- a thorough understanding, might it be added-- or else you're going to end up with pants on head syndrome. Jesan does not want to end up that way, theoretical magic crimes or not!

For Miraina, she initially IS committing crimes. I'm thinking she's even served time here and there for it; it's not until heists keep going awry that Miraina starts to think "huh! this activity is putting me in danger. I should stop!" And when she does come to that conclusion there's at first this restlessness. She gets tangled up in the main quest this way-- because she can't leave anything well enough alone. (It's something she has in common with her little brother.)

And after the main quest... hm. I feel like Miraina would probably go back to farming. Some carpentry too-- I think she'd find some joy in working with her hands and definitely in a less abstract way than holding magic in the palm of her hand. (looking at you Jesan)

And bonus: When they lived on the family farm together, the crime-spree-stopping activity was usually the sibs wrestling with one another. Of course, they still got in trouble for that but at least it wasn't committing crimes... :'D

The Last WIP Wednesday of the Year!

I contemplated putting this off until next year but you know me. I have to write!

I was tagged by both @sylvienerevarine and @hannahcbrown -- not only do I tag them back for the first Wednesday of the new year, but I also boldly tag @druidx , @gwilin-stay-winnin , @liches-covered-in-lich , @dirty-bosmer , @ms-katonic-of-tamriel , and YOU! if you read this you're tagged! (No pressure to anyone though, please)

The first WIP I'm sharing is a piece that's based in Fallout 3 and New Vegas, feat. my lone wanderer and my courier. They're friends or what passes for it. Not like in a fwb way but closer to a pseudo-family way except neither of them want that either.

"You're a smart girl Bev." Nathan was studying the repair work she had done on his .32 revolver. "Thanks." He felt her eyes on him, as if waiting to see what else he'd say. "It's a shame you panic under stress or I'd ask you to come with me to shoot up some raiders." "I'm not like you." The feeling of being watched drifted gradually-- which meant Beverly had looked away. "I grew up in a vault. Killing people never gets easier for me."

The second is just more shameless teasing of poor Miraina. I do love her I promise, hehe.

"I see why you never came back." Jesan was mumbling. And if Miraina hadn't forced herself to stare at her little brother, she would have thought he was upset with her. The grin on his face told otherwise. She wasn't sure if she felt quite as joyous. "Because I got arrested, Jesan, I couldn't come home." "You found something worth leaving for, finally." He waved a hand. "That man--" "This isn't about Guilbert." Miraina snapped. "....Fuck...." Jesan's grin slowly widened as she cursed, exposing the old gap in his teeth towards the back of his jaw. "Don't!" She barked, feeling her face redden. "I was gonna forever bet on Martin Septim... but you handed me the answer on a silver platter, Mira!" A laugh. "I'm gonna kill you one of these days." Miraina grumbled, feeling her hands clench into fists uselessly.

im not going to spoiler tag unless people ask nicely since everyone who's going to read this likely already knows Shivering Isles front to back (probably more than I do XD) but i am thinking about how jesan ends up becoming sheogorath in my little canon and the answer I came up with is heartbreaking

i feel as though he was like "come on mira let's go explore somewhere away from tamriel and get you out of the public eye. it's perfect" and the worst part is... it works at first. Miraina and Jesan meander through the Shivering Isles, observing the flora and fauna together. really bonding as siblings. but then miraina gets pulled away for champion of cyrodiil reasons (or possibly just "I want a break from exploring a strange world" reasons). jesan gets very curious, starts going to mingle with the townspeople in Passwall. getting to know them--

he fells the gatekeeper without miraina. not easily but he does. when she finds out she's leery but she's so exhausted lately that she goes "have fun bro"

she ends up regretting this because jesan starts spending more time in the isles and less in tamriel and. well we all know the rest. the guilt of having "sent" her own brother to his "death" eats at miraina like a pack of wolves.

on a marginally lighter note, the sunstride dancing fic being set before Jesan suggests going to the isles is kind of like the conclusion to Miraina being so done with the upper echelons and crowds of Cyrodiil that she disappears even from her closest friends and Guilbert.... a cascade of unfortunate events....

So, who are the three idiots? (I assume Miraina's one of them. XD)

Miraina, her little brother Jesan, and Ysuha'Ko XD

I'd be careful about calling Miraina an idiot to her face though. She's VERY (tm) sensitive about her perceived lack of intelligence-- even though it's not necessarily intelligence she lacks. She's simply not the type to sit and study magic for hours (and she would have figured this out had she stayed in contact with her lil bro). Plus her Atronach birthsign would have made studying even more of a nightmare....

Jesan would laugh hearing someone call him an idiot but then if they wind up getting 'accidently' hit by a spell he's testing... well... oops! It was totally an accident. Yup.

Ysuha'Ko would probably be somewhere in the middle reaction-wise. She's not as willing to be jolly about it as Jesan is but she also isn't going to try and immediately violence someone. At the start of things she's self taught and her main school is mysticism-- so she can't even fireball people yet. But she might tell Miraina, who would definitely try to hit someone who called Ysuha'Ko an idiot.

I appreciate the chance to talk about my sometimes hero of kvatch 😁

...Miraina Rusonius, oldest child of Duvia and Nolus Rusonius and older sister of one brother. She was born in Sun's Dusk on the seventeenth day. Which of course puts her under the Atronach. This would cause her grief in her younger years as her brother dazzled people with his magical prowess that she seemingly lacked.

However, whenever she was able to use spells-- she tended to favor Restoration because of all the farm work she and her brother did. If one of them got hurt and she had magicka, Miraina would be there with a spell to heal.

Despite her jealousy, Miraina loves her little brother and sometimes wanders close to Skingrad to try and hear about how he's doing. (This behavior reaches a fever pitch post-Crisis when Martin is gone.)

She puts on such a tough face (because she "has to") but even simple kindnesses catch her off-guard; this is why she gets so protective of Martin (and takes his loss as her brother in arms so hard) and why (in my upcoming divergent canon fics) she falls for a certain warhammer wielding breton 😏

Aside from that Miraina has a farmer's tan and scars dotting her body-- and what I personally like to call her copper halo of hair. (It's more brown for her lil brother but he has copper in his hair too hehe)

some other fun facts about miraina (or anything adjacent to her)

The fic well, well, well was set at Fort Empire. It has that exact ayleid well and i thought it would be thematically appropriate name-wise considering she befriends Martin :>

Her eyes have not yet been a consistent color because I keep remaking her file due to modding checks. So far the color is grey, but that was from a mod. oblivion character overhaul i think

Under the usual conventions of my brain Jesan would have been the older brother (as conceptually he is the older character design) but somewhere I thought it would be funny if he was her annoying little brother instead.

Miraina and Jesan are both over 5'5 but under 6'0. Subject to change bc I have no sense of height myself as a 5'3 person

Miraina accidentally knocked out one of Jesan's teeth fighting with him at the farm. She didn't apologize but she feels rotten about it. Jesan just laughs it off, he's a whimsical lovable fella

I know I still haven't decided on that from a 'canon' perspective but it'll probably be what i go with because miraina hasn't suffered enough "losing her brother" trauma /s

(This is assuming they are in a world/position to watch horror movies.)

Pre canon Miraina would yell in fright at horror movies and it would take people holding her down for her not to destroy the tv/movie screening.

Beverly (both pre and post canon) and post canon Miraina would stomach horror movies very well. Beverly had already seen horrors such as the centaurs and super mutants in D.C.-- and Miraina had been through all of those Oblivion gates. A horror movie is easy pickings.

Jesan wouldn't be a stomach of steel but he'd still be able to watch a horror movie and enjoy it, even if it scared him. After the fact he would be pointing out any special effects (or sfx failures) he noticed, the cgi-- all the technical aspects that fascinated him. (Side effect of being a mage, one supposes you become detail-oriented.)

Nathan is watching the movie but his teeth and his hands are clenching every so often. He'll curse under his breath when something scares him. After enough horror movies he "goes to take a piss" and doesn't return until the movies are over.

Ysuha'Ko is very afraid and, in a world where they're all hanging out together, is probably hiding her face in someone's arms. She would probably trap Miraina or Jesan to the couch and failing that, Nathan (who lets out another curse under his breath because he's not your dad dammit)

How does your OC stomach horror movies?

nobody asked about this but i think guilbert and miraina will get along not because they both have issues bonding with their respective brothers but because they are both two handed weapon wielders
