“My head hasn’t been right since the day it was nearly chopped off,” the Black Head loosened the bandana he seemed to never take off, showing an old scar on his neck, one that left no doubt as to what had happened. “When something with six eyes loomed over me, I didn’t flinch. ‘Dying hallucinations,’ I thought. But I’m not crazy, and these ‘shifts in space’ aren’t my imagination. And I’m no believer, even if I call myself a priest. I don’t worship Ha'al as a god — or even as a devil for that matter — but he did put this dumb head back on my shoulders, and for that, I owe him.”

The underground fortress of Grand Lord Ha'al was, indeed, alive. “Tame your mind,” they’d told her before letting her inside. For any thought, any nightmare, would be absorbed by the castle walls and instantly brought to life. However, all those creatures she encountered on her way to the main hall — the winged, the slithering, even the sludge-like ones — were hardly figments of her imagination. There were no doors in the castle; the walls moved as they pleased. For all she knew, Lara could’ve been inside the Beast’s belly, though who could tell?

The Grand Lord was found at the far end of the hall, seated atop a set of steps. The wings he’d recently regained were spread wide, taking up the entire smoky, ghost-lit space. And there, at his feet, was Newmark the Black Head, tracing something with feigned indifference on his artificial palm with the tip of his knife.

This was a realm of a different order. No one stood up for anyone, no one bowed to anyone. Demons, gods, or whatever they might be — time flowed differently for them.

“Welcome, human,” Haal’s voice was as enchanting as ever. “To the underbelly of hell itself.”

Today is a bit of an unusual day. It's August now. Which means that in August my fictional children and I celebrate the 5th anniversary of the start of my fantasy novel! Of course, I introduced my characters to this fandom only recently, but in reality I've been living with them in my head for several years now.

In honor of this, I want to express my endless gratitude to @imaginarycyberpunk2023. You already know my novel better than some of my fellow writers lol. Thank you for keeping me afloat, my dear.
