MARK OF THE SHADOW - ISHAN’S STORYLINE; the four princes of sereng

In the vast kingdom of Sereng, it is traditional for a ruler to adopt several children of talent from all the far-flung reaches of the realm. While ordinarily one is later chosen as heir, currently the four princes rule together while their mother lies ill.

PRINCESS BYURI has the talent of war. She is an arrogant, somewhat reckless young woman from the northern steppes, famed for her prowess in the arts of horse and bow.

PRINCE JAHIL has the talent of society. Silver-tongued and sharp-eyed, he deftly manages the royal court and the easily ruffled aristocracy.

PRINCE RAQASH has the talent of finance. He manages the kingdom’s coin, but his scathing wit is best kept well away from delicate nobles.

PRINCESS SABHIRA has the talent of science. Somewhat removed from the court but integral to the siblings’ group, her discoveries, particularly in medicine, lead the world.

Together, they are proud, possessive, and out of touch with the common people—yet they’re also brave, fiercely loyal, and dedicated to Sereng. A constant show of strength hides their shared and ever-present fear that they will never hold the kingdom together. Their mother is only growing sicker, and their enemies, be they foreign or close to home, are only growing stronger.

your two most combative ocs have been put into a room and told to paint a masterpiece together, otherwise, their loved ones will die. who are they, what did they agree on painting, and did they succeed?

That’s SO specific, I love it. Okay, assuming I can grab characters out of two WIPs, I’m going to take space mercenary Kess Nixa and desert war princess Byuri khos Marni. After some bickering (“I should be in charge, I’ve got more on the line than YOU ever could” “I was classically trained by the masters of Sereng to paint, and you are, what, a criminal from a degenerate age?” “Oh, you have NO idea, Your Highness—”) they decide: FINE, art is based on emotion, I’m feeling a lot of one particular emotion right now! And paint each other’s portraits into a painting based on sheer hatred. When their captors come in to judge, Byuri channels her silver-tongued brother Roqash and her old art tutors and gives them a completely made-up, in-depth summary of the symbolism involved. Byuri was taught at one point and Kess is actually a cyborg with perfect memory and extreme control over her hand movements, so all in all they’re not half bad. Kess and Byuri try not to look obviously like they're about to cry in relief when their loved ones are spared. They shake hands, and decide all in all that there was no harm done but if they ever see each other again they'll stab each other on sight. The end.
