Cold Comfort — Charles Emerson Winchester III x OC

Summary: Charles is busy bellyaching about a minor ailment, and Barbara has had more than enough of his childish behavior.

Barbara marched through the muddy paths of the 4077th M*A*S*H unit, her expression one of sheer exasperation. She had heard enough of Charles Winchester's melodramatic complaints echoing throughout the camp. Everyone had. The other doctors and nurses exchanged knowing glances as she made her way toward the Swamp, where Charles had been bedridden for the past few days due to a minor ailment that he was treating as if it were a mortal wound.

Pushing open the door of the Swamp, Barbara was greeted by the sight of Charles lying in his cot, a handkerchief dramatically draped over his forehead. Hawkeye and BJ sat nearby, trying to keep their faces neutral as they played cards and eavesdropped on the tongue lashing they knew was coming.

“Oh, for heaven's sake, Charles,” Barbara began, planting her hands on her hips. “What is it this time? A paper cut? Did your caviar spoil?”

Charles opened one eye, peering at her from beneath his handkerchief. “Barbara, I am on the brink of death, and your sarcasm is hardly appreciated.” Hawkeye and BJ exchanged amused looks, clearly enjoying the show.

“On the brink of death,” Barbara repeated, emphasizing her disbelief by putting her hand to her head. “Charles, you have a cold. A cold! You’re not dying, you’re not even in danger of dying. You’re just...pathetic!”

Charles sat up a bit, leaning back on his hands and attempting to muster some semblance of his usual dignity. “It is not just a cold,” he insisted. “It is a very severe, debilitating—”

“Oh, stop,” Barbara interrupted, stepping closer to his cot. “I’ve seen soldiers with limbs blown off complain less than you. And they didn’t have half of the luxuries you always seem to provide for yourself.”

BJ snorted. “She’s got a point, Chuck.”

Charles glared at BJ before turning his attention back to Barbara. “I am not accustomed to this...barbaric environment. My constitution—”

“Your constitution, my foot,” Barbara shot back. “You’re milking this for all it’s worth because you like the attention. But here’s a newsflash, we all have jobs to do, and none of us have the time or energy to cater to your inflated sense of self importance.”

Hawkeye leaned back in his chair, thoroughly entertained. “Hear, hear!”

Barbara’s eyes narrowed as she leaned in closer to Charles. “Here’s what’s going to happen. You’re going to get out of this cot, right now, and you’re going to act like an adult. Because if you don’t sit up and do what I say, then I swear to God, I will never speak to you again. And you’ll be left with only the two of them for company.”

She gestured to Hawkeye and BJ, who both waved cheerfully. “No offense,” she added as an aside to them.

“None taken,” Hawkeye replied, still grinning.

BJ nodded in agreement. “Yeah, we’re delightful.”

Charles looked from Barbara to the two doctors and then back again. He could see the outrage in Barbara’s eyes and knew she wasn’t bluffing. With a heavy, theatrical sigh, he pushed himself up into a fully seated position.

“Fine,” he said, clearly pained. “I shall endeavor to...soldier on.”

“Good,” Barbara said with a nod, her expression softening slightly. “Now, drink some water, take your medicine, and get over yourself.”

As she turned to leave, Hawkeye raised his glass in her direction. “Bravo, Babs. Well played.”

BJ clapped a few times in mock applause. “Very well done.”

Barbara couldn’t help but smile as she walked out of the Swamp. “Someone has to keep that man in check.”

“We’re glad it’s you,” Hawkeye called after her.

Charles, now sitting up and sipping his water, muttered something under his breath about barbarism and the indignities of war, but there was a hint of a smile on his face. As much as he hated to admit it, Barbara’s no nonsense talking to had a way of cutting through his theatrics and bringing him back to reality.
