Inspired by @paingoes - I made caretaking guides for Curse in Two Bodies!

Caretaking guide for Adelais:

Deep breathing and grounding exercises.

Privacy from the press and tabloids.

Gentle, platonic touch. Lots of it.

Listen with the effort to fully understand.

Allow him to heal at his own pace. Don’t force him to face too much pain or guilt at one time.

Give him the safety to talk about what he’s experienced without fear of judgement - while still holding him accountable.

^This includes pulling him out of self-flagellation.

Believe him about what he saw and did, and affirm that he’s not crazy for doubting the Korsaivar government.

Caretaking guide for Ninlen:

Extreme cuddling.

Time in nature, and time to be at peace.

Meditation and prayer.

Acknowledge him as an intelligent, thoughtful person rather than the brute he is often mistaken for. Take his ideas seriously.

Surround him with an abundance of basic necessities like food and clothes, which are definitively his and can’t be taken away.

Unpack parentification from his childhood.

Affirm that not everything is his responsibility.

Offer hope for a future where he can live in decent comfort and pursue his own interests without struggling to survive.

Hiiiiii!! There's a minor spoiler in here, so I put it under the cut. (But I mean, it's basically revealed in the Yule chapter anyway.)

🍾 - What's something you wish you could leave behind in the new year?

“Military service. I’m not interested in any more campaigns for a while. But, there’s more at stake than just my own wishes. The priority for the royal family is to ensure the safety of our frontiers.” That last part sounds awfully rehearsed.

🎵 - When you reflect on how much you've endured and suffered in this year, how do you feel?

He struggles to answer this. He won’t meet your eyes and looks visibly afraid, but that's not what he says. "I feel determined. It’s inconvenient, but a curse can be managed and eventually removed, no matter what anyone may say.”

🤩 - What are you most proud of whumpee for this year?

“The agreement to work with me on the curse and carry it together. I know how hard it is to take it back, after feeling relief for a while. It's hard for me every time. He really could have left me to carry everything alone, but he didn’t.”

🌙 - What made you keep going through this year with whumpee? Even when things got hard?

A faraway look of wonder comes over him. “All of my pain has purpose because of Adelais. If I can't endure it, he'll have to. It makes me stronger than I've ever been.”

16 - What is your OC's pain tolerance like? Ninlen has a quite high pain tolerance. Working with mana harvesting is draining work that leaves you kind of...I don't want to say sore exactly, because I haven't fully decided if it's a physical sensation yet. But it is certainly a kind of discomfort that is at least as bad as pain, and Ninlen has learned how to put up with that discomfort since his teen years. He started mana harvesting when he was just 16 to help support the family. He's learned just about every trick there is to push through negative experiences - breathing techniques, getting into a state of flow, things like that. But he still does have his limits, and those tend to come from despair rather than from pain. If he feels like he has no escape and isn't making any progress, that's when things start to get bad for him.

23 - What emotion is the hardest for your OC to process? How about express? The hardest emotion for Adelais to process or express is guilt. He was taught to push down his guilt and to behave ruthlessly, because any admission of wrongdoing is only weakness and reflects badly on the royal family. They want to gain more power, more territory, and they don't want a conscience getting in the way of that progress. So Adelais typically covers up his guilt by acting overly sure of himself and lashing out at others instead. But inwardly, he feels an absolute desperation to atone.

THANK YOU I am absolutely uncontainable about Ninlen right now.

3 - What is your OC's fatal flaw? Are they aware of this flaw? Ninlen thinks he can handle it when he absolutely cannot. Handle what? It. Anything. He signed up to serve as a literal vessel for pain because, "Well, my mom needs money, and this may be awful, but I can handle it!" The man is horrendously bad at setting boundaries because he grew up drudging away at his work in the mana fields and learned how to push through a lot, to the point that he thinks that's just what will always be expected of him and that he will always be able to take it. It's not really his fault, because he was forced to be this way, but it does mean he gets himself into positions where he just kind of...burns out. He does not know his own limits. But he does in fact have limits. Wonder what will happen when he's placed in severe pain and starvation and subjugated to someone who shows him no mercy for long periods of time...hmmm...

10 - What's an AU that would be interesting to explore with your OC? For some reason, I am so tempted to put him in an office cubicle. He's constantly stressed and taking on too many hours and crying in the break room. Adelais can be his boss who overworks him. ...Actually, that's kind of already what's happening, it's just that it's taking place in a palace instead.

19 - How does your OC behave when enraged? Ninlen has a strong sense of ethics, even if it's not the same as Ievenar's sense of justice. He tends to use that to criticize others when he's enraged. We see this a bit in the first chapter. He's basically yelling at god the whole time - "How can you do this and yet call yourself the god of justice? Wtf is wrong with you?" This is slightly off-topic, but one of the themes I want to explore with Ninlen is that he's seen as a brute, someone who would physically attack in moments of anger, because he comes from a poor background and is big and muscular and does grunt work. But he's quite philosophical and a big reader. When he's sitting silently in a room full of nobles, the reason he's quiet isn't because he's stupid. It's because he's calling out their hypocrisies and lapses in judgement inside his own head with great detail.
