Nicky woke up to the sound of water splashing, her eyes opened wide from the noise when she realized she was in the hammock at the chateau. Her memories of the night prior filled her head. She was out with Topper, like she had been for the past few nights. The two of them mainly spent their time more south than the cut, away from prying curious eyes of Kildare. Occupying parks, beaches, sometimes they even just stayed parked in Topper’s car and talking, laughing…making out for hours. That didn’t stop her from her usual shenanigans with the Pogues, while she was around a lot less, she tried to keep up her appearances to avoid anyone saying anything. And if they did, she’d say she worked late, was spending time with friends from her grade that even though each Pogue knew, they wouldn’t ever run into them let alone ask if it was true.
As she came to it she saw John B on the dock tying the HMS Pogue to the boards, likely what the splashing was that woke her up. The fire pit was ashing out, just small embers pulsing as the low breeze killed any hopes of it picking back up. The empty beer bottles and silence outside of the docking boat let Nicky know she was the last one here, it wasn’t that it was unlike her to sleep at The Chateau but lately she was very aware and preservative of her time. Her hands searched for her phone in the hammock and found it. 2%. It was enough for her to check the time and her messages.
9:54AM
Topper 7:14AM:
You still wanna go take the boat out today?
She quickly responded back with the little battery she had.
Nicky 9:55AM:
Yea, sorry I was asleep. Wanna go in the late afternoon? Sunset ride?
After hitting send, she crawled out of the hammock and placed her phone in the back of her jean short pocket. John B was making his way up the dock to the yard.
“Sorry to wake you!” He chuckled.
Nicky stood in the yard, hand on her hip and other hand shielding her eyes from the sun. “I’m sure you owed me a wake up call!”
John B laughed at that. “That’s true, you normally are the early bird Maybank.”
“Speaking of Maybanks, JJ went home?” She looked around at John B approached.
“Uh,” John B paused to think of what to say. “Yea, I think, he left here kind of early.”
“Freaky Friday.” Nicky smiled oblivious to John B being on edge. “Alright, I’ll catch ya later.” She threw up the peace sign and turned to grab one of the many bikes JJ and John B shared between themselves.
Nicky tossed the bike against the house before dredging her way inside. Her phone pinging before she entered the porch door.
Topper 10:09AM:
Sounds good, pick you up normal spot at 4?
But before she could respond, the noise of banging from inside the house alerted her and she placed her phone back in her pocket, she tried to open the porch screen quietly but it was old and creaky so it was impossible. Whoever was inside didn’t mind or hear the creaks so Nicky proceeded with caution. It could have been some of low life townies breaking in and stealing whatever was around, but more likely it could have been her father back from whatever bender. She hoped it was the shithead townies, she could scare them easily but her father, that was a whole other beast.
The living room was quiet when she entered but immediately a figure walking by in the kitchen alerted her. Her eyes jumped to the person. JJ. Relief exhaled out of her mouth and the tension left her body immediately as she rested against the back door.
“Jesus Christ, JJ. You scared the fuck out of me.” Another sigh left her mouth as she stepped closer to the kitchen. Her relief was short lived when she saw tons of metal pieces and parts littered on their kitchen island and counters. “JJ, what the fuck is this?”
“It’s our rent, our bills, our past dues, and oh yea,” he lifted up a copper part and smiled at his sister, “free, fun, spending.”
“JJ what the fuck is all of this?” Nicky wasn’t nearly as happy as her little brother was. Their entire table space was covered, as she got a closer look she realized they were boat parts, some older and rusted and some brand new.
“Boat and drone parts from the salvage yard.” JJ was so nonchalant in how he answered.
“JJ.” Nicky stared at everything.
“Nicky.” JJ mocked her with a laugh.
“Tell me you didn’t steal all of this.” Her hand raised to her forehead as she processed everything.
“What does it matter, I can sell this shit off on the mainland and it’ll never come back to us.” JJ acted as if he had everything solved.
“There’s fuckin trackers in the drone parts, JJ!” Nicky lifted the one part of the drone that was still on.
JJ was quick to grab it from her and smash it on the table along with the other one he had as well. “Problem solved.”
Nicky closed her eyes as she tried to think of what to do. “This is fucking theft, JJ.”
“I’d like to consider it necessary theft.” He tilted his head from side to side as he leveled with his sister.
“That’s not a real fuckin’ thing, JJ.” She kept saying his name, like that was going to ground him or something. “And even if it was, necessary theft would be stealing food or clothes, something of necessity!” Her voice raised.
“I’m pretty sure money is a necessity, and these parts = money, Nicky.” JJ was getting aggravated.
“And what happens if Dad comes home, huh? Sees this shit and fucks off with it? Then what? Then we’re left with the crime and nothing to show for it.” Nicky began arguing with him.
“Dad’s not fucking coming home. You know that!” JJ met her tone. “C’mon, Nick, we need this.”
“No, I’m taking care of us. Rent is paid through till the fall, there's food here isn’t there? Our bills are next to nothing because we’re never really here.” Nicky argued the anger boiling in her gut. She did everything to avoid this.
“Exactly, you’re never here!” JJ yelled now, his voice being fully raised. “I had to step up!”
“For what reason?! Everything was taken care of! You don’t realize this is just digging you into a hole you’re never going to get out of, everything I do is so you can avoid this shit but you always end up back in it, what the fuck is wrong with you, JJ?!”
The last sentence cut. He was just trying to help. Nicky knew that, but she was frustrated.
“I guess I’m just a chip off the ol’ Maybank block.” JJ was hurt, Nicky could hear it in his voice. He was starting to walk away when Nicky blocked him.
“Fuck, JJ. No I’m sorry.” She grabbed his arms. He looked down at her uncomfortably. “I just, I don’t want this for you, I don’t want this for us.” She pointed at the parts. “I try so hard for us to live comfortably and legally.” She laughed hoping JJ would ease down.
He did let out a chuckle. “I appreciate you wanting to help, I always do. But this will do more harm than good. We gotta bring it back, or dump it somewhere that it can’t be tracked back to us. It’s too risky to bring it to the mainland and sell it.” Nicky explained in a more calmer voice.
JJ just nodded, his disheveled hair falling into his face as he did. Nicky nodded back and brought him in for a hug. “I love you, little brother.”
“Love you too.” He mumbled as he embraced the girl back.
“You want my help dealing with this?” She pointed to the mess on the table as they ended their hug.
“Nah, I’ll call John B. We got it over, we can get it back.” His hand raked through his hair.
Nicky smirked thinking back to John B coming back to the chateau this morning and feeling like an idiot for missing the obvious display of anxiety he had from hiding all of this from her.
“I got plans in a bit but you wanna hang out tomorrow? Just me and you? I heard I’m never around anymore.” Nicky’s eyebrows raised as she stared at her brother who let his head fall down in a laugh.
“Yea sounds good, we can catch the morning break if you’re down?”
“Sounds like a plan, I’m gonna go shower, I smell like the bonfire from last night.”
JJ nodded again and turned to take care of the hundreds of parts scattered everywhere while Nicky turned to lock herself in the bathroom. That was a lot to digest, there was a lot done and said. While she thought she was doing a good job at hiding things, she was MIA a lot and exhausted from hiding things. But she still felt this was better than the alternative, for now at least. She turned the shower on and as she let the water warm up she brought her phone out.
Nicky 10:25AM
“Usual spot in an hour?”
Topper replied within seconds.
Topper 10:25AM
“Eager to see me? I’ll be there.”

When the blonde boy met you, everyone warned him about his now crazy girlfriend, he didn't listen. He instead followed you through every adventure you came up with and he loved it, he loved the euphoria of every minute with you, you were a roller coaster he never got bored of because every time it became more dangerous and exciting.
Like today, you were crashing at Sarah Cameron's birthday party.
"You didn't get invited did you?" JJ asked as you pulled him inside the house.
"I did," you said looking around.
"By Sarah?"
"No, by a friend,"
"What friend?"
"Umm, okay I didn't get invited but who cares? I'm here for the party, not for Sarah, I just wanna dance, drink and make out with my hot boyfriend," you pulled his shark tooth necklace and gave him a little peak. You knew he could never resist your lips.
"Fine," he agreed.
"Wait is that-" JJ stopped analyzing the song that just started.
"Oh, my God I hadn't heard this song in forever! Come on, let's dance!" You rushed to the center of the room.
The music took full control of your body, you saw JJ and dragged him with you as you were now dancing. The colorful lights hugged both of your bodies making you feel free and relieved, the more you gazed into his electric blue eyes, the more the world seemed to fade.
You then decided to scream the song at the top of your lungs, JJ followed and all of a sudden, the entire party was jumping around and shouting the lyrics.
˙˚˙༓࿇༓˙˚˙
You finished the fifteenth cup of beer before the rest of the boys and the crowd screamed with excitement, your boyfriend being one of the losers still cheered you up. You managed to shrug yourself out of the crowd along with JJ.
"You know you're the luckiest guy at this party, right?" you said to him with a cocky smile.
"Oh, and why is that?"
"Because you have the baddest bitch of the island," you chuckled as you pulled his neck to kiss him.
You loved JJ for so many reasons it almost felt overwhelming, you got to be with someone who understood your madness to the point where he fell in love with it. So many boys in your past had been scared of you, and then you find this blonde surfer who adores adrenaline just as much as you do. He never stopped you, he never ratted you out as long as you were safe, that was the main reason he was with you the entire time; sometimes he did question some of your decisions and you had to explain to him that everything was fine.
You two met at the beach, one of your friends dared you to surf drunk, you never learned how to do it, although you lived less than a minute away from the seaside. You asked this boy to teach you, after a few minutes of practice, he noticed you weren't sober, yet you somehow did everything he taught you perfectly; he was so shocked after that day, that every time he saw you anywhere, he always remembered that you were the mad girl who learned how to surf while being drunk. You of course recalled the cute boy who taught you and you would always talk to him each time you could.
"Hey, what time is it?" you asked when you separated.
"It is..." JJ got his phone out of his pocket, "Almost 10:30,"
"Exact time?"
"10: 29, why?"
"Shit, we have to get to the rooftop," you pushed everyone you could grasping JJ's arm to come with you.
"Why do we have to get to the rooftop?" he frowned when you reached the stairs.
"Because every year Sarah has this stupid tradition of jumping from her roof to her pool at 10:30 on the dot because that's the exact hour she was born; don't ask me why, I don't know, I don't care," you almost got to the top floor of the Camerons' house, " The only thing I know is that we'll jump instead of her and steal all her attention from her, on her birthday,"
JJ never understood the rivalry you had with the blonde girl, and to be honest, he was afraid to ask.
You finally got to the ceiling, "Let's just hope the Princess isn't here yet," you turned your head not wanting to find Sarah and Topper, but you did. "Oh, but she is and she's got her little puppy with her,"
"What the hell are you doing here Alea?" Sarah confronted you.
"I am here to jump to the pool at 10:30 on the dot," you smiled.
"Oh, and you brought your Pogue boyfriend too, how classy," Topper added with irony.
You placed your hand in front of JJ's hand before he could defend himself.
"Yeah, I did and you know why I did it? Because fuck you both," you showed them your middle fingers to them before grabbing JJ's hand and jumping down.
Sarah Cameron had been your friend since you remembered, your dads had known each other since college and so you were like family. Everything changed once her mom left, she pushed you away along with everyone close to her.
A lot of people cheered as you exited the water container, they didn't know who Sarah was, they were just here for the drinks, the snacks and maybe to get laid.
You knew if that you stayed any longer, Sarah would chop your head off, so you rushed to the door with JJ behind you, and before you left; you spot your obnoxious ex-boyfriend Rafe Cameron and with a quick hand movement that you learned before your parents adopted you, you stole his Rolex watch. He didn't notice it because of his intoxicated state, but Kelce did.
The boy warned his friend and then you were out the door, both you and your boyfriend hopped on each one of your bikes and left as fast as you could, hearing any kind of insults at your back. Your house was just a few minutes away from the Camerons' and with your parents out of town, JJ knew where you were going to stop.
You finally got to the destination, you both parked, took your helmets off and you laughed with a little shock.
JJ sighed still processing the information from before, "You're fucking crazy," He stated breathlessly.
"I've been told," You giggled and left the vehicle so you could kiss him passionately.
You were so special to JJ's eyes and he could never understand why. He sometimes found himself in the middle of the night worrying about how much he loved you, to the point where you became everything for him (second to the Pogues of course).
"Why did you do that?"
"Do what?" Your voice sounded so innocent and naive.
"Everything that happened in there," His eyes were wide, you never got bored of that face every time he still got confused by your actions.
"Because, why not? Like, when are we ever have the chance to steal Sarah Cameron's thunder on her birthday and steal Rafe's special edition watch on the same day ever again? I wanna be able to tell my grandkids that I was that crazy bitch," You explained excitedly
"I love you, " He said it by the way you talked, by the way, you were honest with him, and by the way you made him feel.
"I love you too," You grabbed his neck to kiss him again.

Nicky should have known not to get her hopes up, it had been just over a week and there was nothing from Topper. Now, before we get mad at the boy and chop it up to typical kook behavior, there were a few factors at play here.
Topper never actually got Nicky’s number.
They weren’t in school anymore so there wasn’t anywhere they were guaranteed to see each other
The places where they could see each other, were closed down. Why? The hurricane.
Which leads us to the the last on the list.
Hurricane Sandy. The two day hurricane that knocked all the power out, closed roads from floods, fallen trees, debris, you name it. It was going to take a while for the island to recover from it, especially the cut.
So the lack of interaction between the two wasn’t really anyone's fault in particular. The Wreck had been closed to clean up from the mess Sandy had left behind, being on the dock there was some minor flooding. Nicky had gone and helped out where she could but they were on pause until the insurance company could come out and assess the damages, which meant that Nicky was down to just one job. But luckily, that job, was Heywards, which would have been booming during times like this. Everyone was looking for groceries and household necessities that they couldn’t escape off the island for. So Nicky worked day in and day out, even taking on Pope’s shifts when he wanted to hang with the crew. JJ had picked up some clean up jobs around the island as well as tagging along with Nicky on her grocery drop offs. Between the both of them they had managed to get rent settled for two months, and food for the month. It helped that Heyward was letting Nicky take food home.
The sun was shining, it was easily 90 degrees and it was even hotter on the water. Nicky was organizing the groceries as JJ steered the boat towards Figure 8.
“You know, every freakin’ house we’ve passed since we got to figure 8 has power. They have generators, yachts, it doesn’t even look like there was a storm” JJ yelled to Nicky.
“It’s a kook world and we’re just livin’ in it,” Nicky said mindlessly as she counted the bags to make sure she had everything organized correctly.
“Alright, so when we dock, you take the east side and I’ll take the north. You have 4 deliveries but they’re big orders and they’re scattered a few miles apart. I’m going to take the 20 deliveries that are all next to eachother. It’ll even itself out, probably like 2 hours for us each and we can meet back at the boat.” Nicky was sweating as she wiped her forehead with her work glove and squinted her eyes to shield them from the sun as she looked at JJ who was smirking.
“Are you making fun of me?” Nicky took her hand and pushed JJ causing him to fall backwards with a chuckle.
“You’re just a completely different person when you’re working.” He said taking the boat’s wheel again. “It’s weird.”
“Not weird when we’re eating under a roof.” Nicky mumbled and walked away.
“You mad at me or what?” JJ called out before he was met with a middle finger from his older sister. “Love you too big sis!!” He laughed.
_________
Even though the heat had gone down immensely since it was now 3:30PM, Nicky was still sweating. She had given JJ the golf cart since he had bigger orders and further distances to drive, which meant she was dragging the wagon from door to door.
She approached her second to last delivery, and was about to ring the bell when she heard a voice.
“Nicky Maybank?” The tone of the voice was questioning but still a little excited. Nicky turned to see Topper standing there with a girl half his size who had pigtails and braces.
“Topper?” Nicky questioned back, suddenly extremely aware of how worn down she looked and felt.
Topper looked at the girl, trying to figure out why she was here, his eyes fell on the cart full of groceries. He was a little disappointed, there was a little part of him that had hoped she was there to see him, but nevertheless, he was going to take advantage of the fact she was here now.
“Uh, yea, this is uh, this is me.” He pointed to the house. “And this is my sister, Addie.” His hands went to the girl’s shoulders.
She smiled pushing her glasses up the bridge of her nose before extending her hand out to shake. “Addie Thornton.” The girl’s voice was high and eager.
“Nicky.” She smiled at the little girl and met the extended hand with her own.
“Nicky Maybank.” Addie said insinuating that she already knew who she was. “Are you crab girl?” She asked boldly.
“Addie!” Topper barked, clearly embarrassed. It made Nicky laugh, though.
“I think so?” Nicky answered. “Unfortunately I only have produce and red meat for you today.” She checked her list and pointed at the wagon.
“Here, no one’s home,” Topper stepped forward to the front door and fidgeted with his keys, “or let me know we were getting a delivery.” He laughed awkwardly and left the door open wide for everyone to enter.
Nicky stepped inside with the wagon, taking in the largeness of the house, gawking at the spiral staircase, staring at the professionally taken photographs of the family that sat on the wall, perfectly hung and seemingly dusted off weekly because there wasn’t any hint of it anywhere.
“Our mom thinks she’s an interior decorator but she’d only ever get hired at the funeral home if you ask me.” Addie said kicking her shoes off by the door and dropping her bag.
Nicky choked on a laugh while Topper responded with another high-pitch, “Addie!”
The little girl rolled her eyes, “You say it too when we don’t have pretty girls over, which is never.”
Topper blushed and went to pinch the bridge of his nose, embarrassed and getting annoyed with his little sister.
“Addie, why don’t you go do…  homework or something.” He stuttered.
“It’s summer, Topper.” She stood there barely 4 feet but her attitude was 6 feet tall.
“Ad-” he began to say.
“Addie, go anywhere but here,” she let out a large sigh as her shoulders dropped and she ran upstairs.
“Sorry about her, she’s–” Topper started to say before Nicky cut him off.
“Amazing.” A smile filled her face. “When she’s in high school you’ll be grateful for that attitude when you don’t have to handle bullies.”
“That’s probably true,” Topper laughed and let an awkward silence fill the air. “So, I wanted to call you,”
“You don’t have to do that, Top.” Nicky shook her head. The use of his name from her mouth sent chills down his spine. “It’s fine, we can just go back to how things were, actually we don’t even need to, I’m sure you’re off to college soon, we probably won’t even see each other, unless I’m dropping off grocery orders, but I don’t think we’re gonna have another hurricane anytime soon, at least not until late August, which you’ll be at school, and won’t see me, if you’re going to school that is, I don’t mean to assume, I just figured–” Nicky was rambling.
“Do you want to hang out right now?” Topper asked.
Nicky stood stunned for a minute, “I, uh, have one more delivery to make.” She pointed back outside.
“Let me put away our grocery bags and I’ll meet you outside.” Topper said. Nicky figured he ignored her comment but would just have to make her point known outside.
She made her way through the extravagant doors with the wagon that had a couple bags left in it for her last delivery and just took in the scenery as she waited for Topper. Her eyes fell onto the large fountain that had a golden pineapple at the center of it. It made Nicky smile because of the comment Addie had made about her mother’s passion for interior design. It had clearly extended to landscaping design as well.
“That’s my room.” Topper pointed to just above where Nicky was staring. She looked up to see the porch he was referring to and nodded. “You have your own balcony.”
“My room is more secluded from the rest of the house, and comes with perks like a balcony also. My mom likes to keep us all at a distance so” Topper said with a shrug, clear that he and his mom didn’t have the best relationship.
“I get that.” She nodded. “I mean not the east wing of a house thing but I get the parent keeping you at a distance thing.”
“Alright, let’s go.” Topper said, grabbing the wagon, beginning to walk down the street. “Where’s your next delivery?” He looked back at her.
She was stuck, shocked, but also confused. “Uh, it’s on Magnolia Street, near the dock.”
Topper stopped, almost tripping on his feet when he heard where the delivery was.
“That’s like a 40 minute walk?” He frowned.
“It’s more like 25 but yeah.” She began walking towards him to take the wagon from him. “You don’t have to come with me, if anything it’s better, I’m doing deliveries with JJ.”
“I can deal with JJ.” Topper placed his hand in his pocket to pull out his keys. “Come on, we’ll throw the wagon in the trunk, I’ll drive us there.”
“What if I don’t want you to deal with JJ. What if I don’t want to deal with anyone.” Nicky’s words crashed into each other quickly.
“I didn’t mean like deal with him deal with him.” Topper started to fumble on his words. “I just meant like I don’t mind having to interact with him.”
“Clearly. The black eyes courtesy of you and your friends made it very clear that you love interacting with him.”
Topper closed his eyes, seemingly regretting every time he put his hands on JJ, which was weird, all over a girl? Nicky Maybank?
“You’re right, I’m sorry. Let me just take you to the house and I’ll leave before you get back to the dock. JJ won’t even see me.” His hands were up innocently.
Nicky thought for a minute, she did want to spend time with him, even if it was a short amount of time. “Okay.”
“Okay.” Topper smiled and took the wagon back for a second time and loaded it and the groceries back in the car.  As he walked to the driver's seat of the car, he pulled a water bottle out that he had on him from when he left the house. “Here, you must be dying,” he said.
“Are you telling me I look like shit?” Nicky tried to hold back a smile as she grabbed the ice cold water bottle from him.
“No, n-no, I just– it’s hot out, and you’ve been walking and–”
Nicky placed her hand on his shoulder, “Topper, relax, I’m joking.”
His head fell down with a chuckle, “Sorry, I’m just, I’m sorry I didn’t reach out.” He lifted his head up to look at her.
“You didn’t have my number.” She leaned her head back against the jeeps’ headrest, knowing that he was going to mention that earlier. “And then the hurricane.” She pointed to the sky.
“Yea,” he chuckled, “I was going to say that earlier.”
“Well, here.” She opened the console and grabbed a pen and piece of paper starting to write down her number. “No more excuses.”
“Well, we can’t control the weather,” Topper grabbed the paper with the number and slipped it in the top of his sun visor.
“Yea, but now, you can call me when it’s raining.” Her smile was contagious which explained Topper’s matching grin.
_________
The ride wasn’t long, it almost made Nicky wish that they had walked, even in this disgusting heat, just to get more minutes with him. Which was insane to her, that she was wishing for more time with Topper. She wasn’t sure when that realization was going to fade, that maybe an entire life of hating him was an over reaction, all surface level. She knew there was the whole years and years of battle between him and JJ but getting to know him on this deeper level made that fade to the back of her mind quicker and quicker as the minutes passed. The ride was so enjoyable, there was something about driving in the summer sun with the top down, wind blowing through your hair, mixed with belly laughs and no worries.
It was weird, they didn’t talk about school, they didn’t talk about anything you think they’d talk about. It was all new territory, getting to know each other outside of everything they thought they knew.
“So what were you up to before I came by?” Nicky said recovering form whatever the last thing Topper said that made her explode into laughter.
“Oh God, you’re gonna make fun of me.” He glanced at her with one hand on the wheel while the wind forced it’s way through his frosted hair.
Damn. He looked good.
Nicky thought for a moment and figured, she’d have nothing to lose. “Not sure I could make fun of you when you look like that.”
Topper’s gaze went back to the street as his tongue mindlessly played with the inside of his mouth trying to hold back a smile.
“We were looking for seashells, amongst other things,” he shrugged,  “the storm washes things up.”
“You baffle me.” She shook her head with her mouth gaping in shock.
Topper looked at her confusedly waiting for an explanation.
“You go crabbing to get fresh seafood for your sister, you take her to treasure hunt on the beach, you’re driving me to one of my deliveries, it’s just–” she paused thinking of what exactly to say, “you’re not who I thought you were.”
“And who did you think I was?” He asked, still keeping one hand on the wheel.
“Honestly? A dick.” She snorted. Topper matched her laugh.
The two were silent for a minute as they both fell into thought. It was a heavy statement, for both of them. Nicky’s extent of Topper was everything him and his friends had put her brother and her friends through since middle school. The teasing, the practical jokes, which eventually escalated to more mean practical jokes and teasing and then physical fights.
For Topper, the weight of everything he had put the girl through, even if it wasn’t directly meant for her, was bothering him. But things felt ultimately different now. It was a little cliche but, they had graduated, and that changed everything. There wasn’t the pressure of societal norms, or Kildare County norms. In just a few months their entire graduating class would be going off in different directions, different schools, different states. Their futures were different, which is why he looked at this from a new angle.
But, even despite his optimistic view, it didn’t change everything that happened before. All the things that silently sat building the tension between them every time they were together. That tension though, it was what made this fun.
“I know it doesn’t mean much,” Topper began to offer up as he pulled up to the last delivery house, “but I’m sorry for all the stupid shit I put you through.” He paused and then stuttered, “and JJ.”
“I appreciate that. For the record, I like this Topper better than whatever show you put on for your friends.” Nicky said as the car was put into park.
The delivery went smoothly without issue, Topper stayed in the car per Nicky’s instructions. She didn’t want anyone to see them if they didn’t have to. Whatever this was, it wasn’t ready for unnecessary public eye.
“You hungry?” Topper asked as Nicky jumped back into the car.
“Starved but I really gotta get back to Heyward’s boat. JJ’s probably waiting for me.” Nicky buckled her seatbealt.
Topper nodded, disappointment filling his face, “I’ll drop you off at the dock.” He put his jeep in drive and began the trek back to the Figure 8 docking station.
“Tomorrow?” Nicky chimed in seeing his face and not wanting him to think she was avoiding him. “We can go wherever, I don’t know what kind of food kooks eat but I’m sure I’d love it.” A shrug fell from her shoulders as the lie slipped through your teeth.
“Yea, yea, that sounds good. I can pick you up?” Topper was stuttering slightly as he agreed.
“Topper?” Nicky asked, afraid to make eye contact with him.
“What’s up?” He bent his head down to get a good look at her.
“Can we like, just go to the pier or go off island or something?” Nicky didn’t want to have to act like a kook or go to kook places, between simply not wanting to she didn’t want the comments that would come along with being seen with him or fake this.
“Yea, that’s no problem–we can go surfing?” He phrased it as an uneasy question, not sure if it’s something the girl would want to do with him.
“That’s perfect.” Her face lit up and she brought her legs criss crossed on the seat as she stared out the window win a smile on her face.
In the drivers seat, Topper looked the same, the grin he was wearing as he drove with one hand on the steering wheel with no other thought than how excited for tomorrow he was.
As they pulled up to the dock, Nicky undid her seatbelt and turned to Topper. “I’m glad I ran into you.”
“Me too, I’m, uh, really looking forward to tomorrow.”
“Text me?” She grinned at him. “That way we don’t have to wait until tomorrow.”
“Yea, I’ll text you.” He let out a chuckle and he leaned forward a little.
Before anything could happen Nicky was ducking down on the floor of his Jeep, bending down so that she couldn’t be seen out the window.
“Fuck! JJ!” She called out from below.
Topper turned to look out his window to see JJ stepping onto Heywards boat with a bag.
“He’s not looking if you wanna pop out right now.” He kept his eyes on the kid.
Nicky listened, reaching for the handle and grateful that her door was on the other side where JJ wouldn’t be able to see. As she slipped out the door, literally, she sat down on the gravel, just to extra cautious of any prying eyes but the only ones on her were Topper’s. He must have walked around while she was finessing her way out of the car.
“Your car is very geometric.” She said a little embarrassed as he bent down to be eye level with her.
“You are very weird, Nicky Maybank.” He spoke those words and leaned in to kiss her. Her back was being held up by the running board but soon she was being held up by Topper’s hand behind her head as he pressed his lips against hers. It wasn’t a long kiss, but it wasn’t short either. It was the perfect first kiss length and as Topper pulled away Nicky spoke up.
“What a compliment.” She laughed and stared up at him as he reached and grabbed a piece of stray a woodchip from her hair that likely got there from her acrobatics out of the car.
Topper helped the girl up and after he grabbed her cart from the trunk, they moved over to the fruit stand that was set up in the lot, just enough cover for them to say their goodbyes.
“I’ll see you tomorrow?” She grinned, still elated from the kiss.
“You’ll see me tomorrow.”
The two hugged goodbye, not taking the chance to kiss again since they were out in the open more now. Nicky had been cheesing extremely hard as she dragged the cart back over to the dock. Her phone in hand as it buzzed with a text from Topper.
“I meant to ask if you’ll wax my board for me tomorrow lol”
“The real reason you want to go surfing comes out” She texted him back.
“That and I want to kiss you again.”
His text made Nicky grin like she never had before. But that was soon interrupted by JJ.
“What are you smiling at?” JJ’s face was twisted up as he stared at his sister.
“A text.” Her face dropped immediately and a face of disgust filled it as she looked at her nosy brother.
“You look like shit.” He said giving her the same look back.
“Thanks you smell like shit and you were the one with the golf cart.” She pushed past him and secured things on the boat.
“I got food.” JJ said as he lounged on the bench seat.
“Thanks!” She called out from the captains quarters.
“Hey, who were you talking to?” JJ asked, his feet kicked up.
Nicky looked out the sliding door and frowned. “What?” Her heart was racing.
“I don’t know when I loaded up I saw you at the stand hugging someone.” JJ wasn’t looking at Nicky as he asked, he was on his phone doing something which gave Nicky the hint that he probably didn’t know.
“Maria. The lady who works the stand, you know the one who let me bring home stuff every so often. She knows about Dad and with the hurricane she was just being friendly, gave me a hug when I told her we didn’t have power and dad’s been MIA.” Damn, was she a good liar.
“Cool, she didn’t give you any free shit today?” JJ was standing up grabbing the takeout bag and pulling out some expensive looking chicken bowl.
“Nah, she said her stock was low, stock couldn’t get over the bridge this morning.” Another great lie.
“Word, well here’s an expensive ass burrito bowl that set me back like $15 easy.” He mockingly smiled at her.
“Add it to my tab.” She rolled her eyes and grabbed it.
“What is that?” JJ frowned and reached out to pull a woodchip from her hair. “You livin’ in the fuckin’ woods or some shit?”
Nicky swatted his hand away. “I just walked half of figure 8, cut me a fuckin’ break and eat your expensive ass burrito bowl, loser.”
JJ laughed and sat back down on the bench while Nicky moved back to the wheel of the boat and got everything in gear to head back home, grateful that JJ didn’t see anything and more importantly looking forward to tomorrow.

When Summer Ends (1/?)
Topper Thornton x Maybank!Sister OC Nicky Maybank
Summary: Nicky Maybank, JJ’s older sister, just graduated.  Her summer break was supposed to be normal. Work, party, chill. But then she somehow Topper came into the mix. Fun little summer romance fic with the twist of a pogue navigating a relationship with a kook.
A/N: First time writing for Outer Banks! This doesn’t really follow the canon storyline much at all and I’ve taken my own liberties like making Topper a year older in this fic. I’ve had this idea in my head forever and finally had the right motivation and inspiration to start writing! Hope you enjoy the start to this short multi-chap :) No taglist yet, but just let me know if you’d like to be added for the next parts.
TW: All my fics are 18+. Mentions of alcohol, cursing.

“Nicky Maybank,” a voice slurred as she filled up her red solo cup at the keg.
Her eyes traveled up from the tap to see the six foot tall blonde, sporting a billabong long sleeve shirt over cargo shorts. Her eyes moved back down to see the sperry boat shoes and a smile formed on her face before her eyes met back up with his.
“Topper Thornton,” she casually said back as she handed him the keg tap.
“What brings you here this fine evening,” he stumbled on his words, clearly drunk.
Nicky smiled again as she brought the solo cup to her mouth, pretty much downing the beer she had just poured for herself.
“Same thing as you, I’m sure,” she picked the tap back up from him to refill her cup.
“Now if I was a concerned citizen, I might say you might be drinking too much, Nicky Maybank,” Topper said.
“Well, I’m glad you’re not a concerned citizen,” she said, throwing the tap down to the ground since she was done, letting the leftover beer that was in the spout spit out onto Topper’s boat shoes.
Topper took a step back throwing his hands up to avoid the spillage, causing Nicky to laugh under her breath a bit.
“Yea, real nice,” Topper joined her in a laugh, which was unexpected. He was a kook and she was a pogue and this was the annual beginning of summer bonfire, while both crews were invited, they were likely not to intervene, let alone get along.
“Why are you talkin’ to me, Top,” the girl used the nickname pretty much everyone around the island referred to him as.
“It’s our last bonfire, we graduated, figured being pleasant wouldn’t cause any harm, but I guess I was wrong,” he shook his head.
“You realize you’ve punched my brother at least 5 times, right?” she squinted her eyes at him waiting for a response.
“Nick!!!” JJ’s voice called out amongst the crowd.
“Speak of the devil,” Topper laughed sarcastically as JJ approached.
“Nick,” he called out again to the girl, at a lower tone since he was now right behind her. His hand came out and lightly grabbed her left arm to get her attention. But before he could explain what he needed her for, he realized who she was talking to and looked Topper up and down with a frown.
“Have a good night, Nicky Maybank,” Topper nodded and raised his cup up in a cheers before retreating away, still not taking his eyes off both of the Maybanks for another few seconds.
“You good?” JJ questioned his older sister. Nicky didn’t break eye contact with Topper as she nodded her head and chugged the rest of her cup, throwing it into the bin that was in tossing reach.
“Okay good, cause I made a bet that you could out time Peeler in a kegstand,” he said waiting her reaction.
Nicky’s head turned now, after hearing her little brother’s words. “So you need me for the cash or the kegstand?”
“Kegstand first, then maybe cash,” he smiled awkwardly.
“What time I gotta beat?” Nicky asked with no way of telling if she was annoyed or not.
“15 seconds,” JJ answered.
Nicky practically choked on her laugh. “Tell Peeler it’s on.”
____________
Nicky’s eyes fluttered open, and from the minute they did the pain began to radiate throughout her head and her aching body. She looked around and realized she had crashed on the couch at her house. “JJ!” she called out. Almost instantly he was in front of her with his hand extended with two white pills with blue writing on them, advil.
“Shouldn’t I be the one taking care of you?” she grabbed the pills and the beer that was next to her to wash them down.
“Considering you used the little graduation money you got to pay for us to eat this week, I think handing you an Advil is the least I can do,” he walked to the fridge and pulled out milk and grabbed a box of cereal from on top of the fridge.
“You want some?” he offered up the breakfast.
“Yea, lucky charms,” Nicky rubbed her eyes trying to fully wake herself up.
“Not me lucky charms,” JJ raised his voice multiple octaves to mimic the lucky charms commercial as he clutched the box to his chest before pouring his older sister a bowl.
“What happened last night?” Nicky begrudgingly moved over to the kitchen.
“You mean before or after you knocked Yvonne out,” JJ smiled as he inhaled his cereal.
“You’re kidding me,” Nicky froze looking up at her brother.
“Okay, knocked out is an exaggeration but you definitely got a solid shot to the face,” he chuckled.
“Why?” she asked, closing her eyes trying to remember.
JJ’s face dropped and he moved to put his bowl in the sink, letting it clatter.
“She said something about dad, didn’t she?” Nicky said knowing it was the only reason she’d lose her cool.
“Doesn’t matter, you’re done you’re out of here, you can kiss Kildare county goodbye, you’re goin’ to Julliard or Brevard.” JJ boasted.
“You know I deferred a semester,” she said, not wanting to talk about her college plans.
“Not sure why,” JJ grabbed his backpack as the girl dumped her half eaten bowl into the sink.
“Speaking of dad,” she quickly changed the subject, “still no sign of him?”
“Don’t jinx it,” JJ retorted.
“While I agree, I also would like for him to pay shit,” Nicky said, annoyed.
“Like what?” JJ frowned.
“Every month this person called our landlord comes to collect rent, and if we pay they lets us live here,” she grinned.
“You just paid that,” JJ shook his head.
“Yea, last month,” she sighed. “It’s fine I have a shift today at The Wreck and then at Heywards later this week so I can ask Anna and Heyward for an advance. They know I’m good for it,” Nicky thought through her plan.
JJ looked stressed, like he wanted to help but wasn’t sure how. He knew things were rough for his sister. She took on the role of caretaker for him since they were kids. Their mother had left when they were both young, leaving their alcoholic, drug addict father in charge of them both, and as they got older the less involved he was. Which, in all honesty, despite Nicky’s comments and complaints, she much rather have had it this way because when Luke Maybank was around, things tended to get out of control.
“So What are you up to today?” she quickly asked, changing the subject.
“It’s the first day of summer baby!!!! What do you think we’re doing?” JJ yelled out. “Smoking beers and drinking weed!!!”
“I’ll be sure to stop by the chateau tonight,” Nicky said knowing that the group had a first day of summer tradition.
“I’m out of here but I’ll see if there’s anything around town I could do to pick up some extra cash,” he said as he departed from the house.
With that, Nicky got ready for her shift at The Wreck. Kie’s parents had been kind enough to give her a shot without any experience. Nicky wasn’t stupid she knew that The Carreras looked at her as a pity case, someone to feel sorry for, but she also knew that Richard Carrera had grown up on the Pogue side of town, and Anna still had fallen in love with him. She was pretty positive that she owed her for the chance that was given to her two years ago.
Luckily, the restaurant wasn’t too packed, she had the afternoon shift where most people were out running errands, still hungover from the night before, or out on the water. But just as Nicky was thankful, a group of Kooks walked in.
Kelce, Rafe, and Topper strutted into The Wreck not even letting the hostess seat them, just picking the patio seat like it belonged to them.
“Play nice,” Anna’s voice said with a hint of a smile behind it.
“I always do,” Nicky matched her voice.
“They’re your last table for the day anyway,” she closed the register and handed her a few menus to give to the guys.
“Can I talk to you after my shift is over?” Nicky asked. The nerves caused her to feel clammy and anxious. She hated asking for money, she knew her family name was already enough to cause doubt and judgment around this town, and she didn’t need to add to it, but she was a 17 year old supporting her and her brother, and while not everyone grasped that concept, she knew Anna did.
Anna nodded as her lips curled up to ease some of the tension she knew the girl felt.
“When you finish up at their table just come find me.”
____________
Kelce and Rafe were in rare condition, although to Nicky this was normal, but Topper could tell they were acting out more than usual. Dropping their napkins on the ground, tossing food around, spilling things, just making a mess and being difficult.
“Can I get you guys anything else?” Nicky asked as she re-approached the table.
“I don’t see you on the menu,” Rafe’s hand moved outwards to graze the girl’s exposed leg.
Like a force of habit, she stepped back and swatted his hand away.
“Now that’s no way to treat a paying customer,” Rafe said, now a little angry.
“Take your money and shove it, Rafe. And while you’re at it, go fuck yourself,” Nicky spat at the man before slapping their check on the table and retreating back to the bar.
“No need to act crazy, Nicky!” Kelce called out but the girl ignored it.
Topper said nothing just watched the two make more of a mess before they left. Noticing when they all got up they barely covered the bill for their food and left no tip for the girl.
Nicky walked back up to the table with a sigh. She began stacking the dishes, the gross remnants of food sticking to her hands as she attempted a first pass of cleaning. She threw the dishes into the tub that the busboys usually held but today, since they were short staffed the job became hers.
Nicky moved down to the ground to pick up the napkins and anything else they decided to discard on the ground. Her frustration was rising, this was demeaning to her and she was angry.
“Hey, forgot to leave this for you,” Topper’s voice cut off Nicky’s thoughts.
She moved to stand up forgetting the table was right above her and it collided with her head. Even though she was wearing a baseball hat, there might have well been nothing in between her head and the table with how hard she hit it.
“Fuck,” she murmured as she maneuvered her way out.
“You alright?” Topper leaned down trying to get eye level with her but she waved him off.
“What do you want? Haven’t you reached your quota for being an asshole today? Or since it's the end of the month you gotta make up for the slow days?”
“I just realized we forgot to leave this,” he went to place the $100 bill on the table but stopped when he saw there was really no place to put it since the table was disgusting.
“No go for it, leave it there, it can be your parting trick to me, that oughta to earn you some clout, let’s see if Nicky will take the $100 bill that’s covered in already eaten food and gunk,” she rolled her eyes and threw the remaining cups into the tub.
“Just keep your pity money, you didn’t have the balls to say shit when tweedle dee and tweedle dum were here, so don’t think you gotta clear your conscience now,” Nicky grabbed the grip of the tub at both ends and turned to face Topper. She stood there waiting for him to step aside, because she wasn’t going to add more work for herself.
He nodded and moved so she could pass, but as she retreated to the back, Topper created a little contraption that held the money out of reach from the dirty table. Using straws from the table behind him, he created a little stick figure man, cutting a slit in the straw hand to hold the $100 bill and then in the other arm as well to hold a sign that read “sorry.” He placed the contraption on the napkin holder in the middle of the table and left, knowing it wasn’t worth arguing with the girl more, she was right, he and his friends had done enough.
Nicky walked back to the table to finish up when she saw the masterpiece Topper had left. As much as she wanted to be angry, she appreciated his effort. She pocketed both the $100 bill and the straw figure before cleaning up the rest of the table.
After she dumped the dirty rags and dishes into the kitchen, she washed her hands off not just of the stickiness but of the day. She had to go into her talk with Anna with a clear mind, not upset or frustrated. She took her apron off, hanging it where the dirty laundry went to get done and threw her sweatshirt over her work tee. She took a couple moments, staring into the warped mirror that stood a whopping 4’11 in the small locker room meant for the staff. She didn’t fit into the mirror, about 6 inches were cut off leaving the bottoms of her legs cut off as she stared into her own eyes. Taking one more deep breath she turned her brain off and just walked up to the manager’s office, giving the large wooden door a sturdy knock to announce her presence.
“Come in,” her voice was sing-songy.  “Hey Nicky,” Anna smiled, “Sit please.”
Nicky sat in the barreled chair across the desk from Anna, who could tell the girl was nervous.
“So what’s up?” Anna lead the conversation in a nonchalant tone, hoping to get the girl into a bit of comfortness.
“You know how much I appreciate you giving me this opportunity, it’s honestly been such a huge help, and I– well, I hate that I even have to ask this but could I get an advance on my next paycheck? Rent’s due and I used my graduation money on dinner for me and JJ this week and–”
Anna reached over and grabbed the girl’s hand and squeezed. “You don’t need to explain yourself,” she gave one more squeeze and leaned back, opening the locked drawer with the pre-cut checkbook in it.
“I know a lot of people in this town don’t know what your situation is at home, and I know you don’t want to tell them, it’s noble of you, but you work here 5 days out of the week, even though you don’t say much, I know Luke hasn’t been home in 2 months,” Anna replied looking up at the girl.
Nicky said nothing. “You very much earned this already, you’re here early most days, you bus tables when we’re short staffed, and you even run errands for Richard when we’re low on stock,” Anna said as she filled out the check.
“That’s just because I work at Heywards, I have a connec–”
Anna cut the girl off again. “It’s because you’re a good person.” The check was being handed over. “Consider it a graduation bonus. You’ll still get your paycheck next week,” Anna leaned back.
“I can’t accept this, Mrs. Carrero.” Nicky handed back the check.
“You can. And you will. It’s not just for you. You’re taking care of your house and your brother, and as much as your brother ircks the living hell out of me,” she paused to chuckle, “you gotta take care of each other.”
Nicky laughed and nodded, putting the check in her bag tucked away with the $100 bill she had gotten as a tip.
“Thank you, seriously, you don’t know how much this means to me,” she said as she retreated out the door. “And for the record he ircks me too,” Nicky laughed.
“Take the lunch rush leftovers home, they won’t do any good here for the dinner rush.” Anna called out to the girl.
“Thank you times a million Mrs. C!” Nicky called back to her and grabbed the already packaged up food.
She made her way to the beat up truck that was older than her that she shared with her brother. After she threw her bag and leftovers into the passenger seat and made her way to the driver side to get in, she heard some commotion over by the dock. Her attention averted over to where the noise was and to her surprise she saw Topper there struggling with a crabbing cage.
Her brain went back and forth for a minute, wondering if she should go help him or let it be but she decided since he had gone out of his way to make up for earlier, she’d do the same.
“Your chicken string is too short!” Nicky called out from the bed of her truck, pulling out bungee cables and walking over to the boy.
“I never like using chicken string anyway, snags too much,” she said, grabbing the cage and putting the bungee cords on the corners of the cage.
“I ran out of the string,” Topper shook his head, while he grabbed the other bungee clip and attached it to the cage.
“What bait do you use?” Nicky tried to look into the cage to see what was in the wire trap.
“Chicken necks.” Topper held the bag up.
“Not so bad,” she smiled and tossed the cage into the water. “You use some rank ass flounder and you’ll only have to wait 5, maybe 10 minutes before your cage is filled.” She offered up the advice.
“Don’t really have any of that hangin’ around, you know,” he laughed.
“Could just use the entire table you and your kook friends left behind, smells the same.”
Topper stopped laughing and re-situated himself, he averted his eyes out to the ocean and fiddled with something to fill the awkwardness.
“Thanks by the way, your gesture didn’t go unnoticed, when did you become so crafty Mr. Thornton,” Nicky tried to break the awkwardness, and it worked.
Topper chuckled, “Long story,” he shook his head.
“Well luckily, you chose chicken necks to catch crabs so we’ll be here for at least 30 minutes,” she laughed and threw her legs over the dock.
Topper looked over and frowned at the girl getting comfortable and clearly expecting him to tell his story.
“My sister, she’s 12 and loves to make weird crap,” he shrugged.
“I thought it was a long story,” Nicky’s eyebrows raised.
“It’s not really what I like to lead with, you know,” he paused and lifted his hands, “ hey I do arts and crafts with my little sister,” he mocked himself.
“I still play the ground is lava with JJ so I see no issue,” Nicky grinned as Topper’s face went into a huge smile, knowing he now had a bit of dirt on the boy he quite often had issues with. Nicky could read his intention and directed daggers from her eyes at him. “And don’t you dare use that against him or I’ll use you for crab bait,” she pointed at him.
“Aright alright, we each have a secret to keep to the grave,” Topper raised his hands in innocence.
“So why are you out here on a Thursday night, the first night of summer vacation, crabbing?” she leaned her back against the wooden column that held up the short boardwalk they were on.
“You ask a lot of questions, you know that?” Topper looked over at her but Nicky didn’t respond, just waited for him to answer.
“It’s seafood night.”
“Why not just go to Heyward’s?” Nicky responded without missing a beat.
Topper motioned his hands to the ocean in front of him, as if it was obvious.
“Yea, Heyward gets his seafood from the same place, I know, I’m out on the boats with him,” she shook her head.
“You know,” he paused for a minute,  “fresh is best,” he looked over at the blonde. “And this is how I get fresh.” Topper paused wondering if he was going to get into the full story with someone he barely knew, and he decided against it, biting his tongue.
“I’ll pull the story out of you one day,” she smiled and began to readjust herself. Sitting on her legs as she moved to pull the cage out of the water. There were about 8 crabs inside, 3 of them were clearly too small but the others were decent sized.
“Thanks for saving seafood night,” Topper smiled as he threw the crabs into the cooler he had.
“Anytime,” Nicky awkwardly stood up, she could tell their little moment together was over so she began to walk back to her car.
“Your bungees!” Topper called out to her, waving them in the air.
“I got plenty, don't worry about it, keep it for future seafood nights!” she called back to him. Just as she was about to get back in her truck she froze, the thought came to her and she tried to push it away but no such luck. Before her brain could even comprehend what she was thinking, her feet were walking back toward him on the dock.
“I can show you a way better place to go crabbing, bigger shells, longer legs,” she was now mentally scolding herself. This was Topper Thornton, her brother's biggest rival, king kook, and she was inviting him to her private fishing spot.
“Yea, I’d actually love that,” Topper agreed without hesitancy, “when did you have in mind?” he now felt awkward.
Nicky thought for a minute. Her schedule running through her head along with the final thought that she could still back out, make up an excuse right now, or give a day weeks from now and just let it come and go.
But then the words escaped from her mouth.
“Tomorrow.”

Despite being up late at the Chateau with JJ and the crew, Nicky found herself up early this morning. She had showered, straightened up, and now was enjoying a cup of coffee and the peace and quiet. JJ was either gone or asleep in his room, and Nicky wasn’t going to risk creaking his bedroom door to check.
There was a sort of peace in the Maybank household in the early AM, the sun shining through the windows, the birds chirping, the sounds of the bay, there was a certain tranquility to it all. That’s why Nicky was sitting with the kitchen window open, on the counter, with her cup of coffee, her knees folded up towards her chest soaking in the calmness. It was short lived when she heard the crunching of gravel. Her eyes shot to the window, assuming their father had come home after being on whatever bender he was on. Her heart froze when she saw the black jeep. There was no way that was her father, and if it was he had stolen a car and she wanted absolutely no parts in that. But then the door opened and she saw the frosted tips of none other than Topper Thornton. Her eyes frowned and she dropped the coffee mug into the sink and ran outside.
Nicky was sure to make her exit out of the house as silent as possible, in case JJ was home. As she made her way down the stairs, Topper started to speak up.
“You didn’t give me a place or time, so I figured I’d just show up! I broug–”
A hand wrapped around his mouth as his body slammed against the doors of his jeep. His hands went up in a display to show he wasn’t being hostile, if anything he was surrendering, but his face was confused.
“Are you fucking crazy?” Nicky’s hand was still pressed against Topper’s mouth but her gaze was towards her house waiting for her brother to make his way out to check out the commotion and then she’d have to explain why the fuck a kook, and not just any kook, but Topper Thornton was here at 7:30 in the morning.
Luckily, there was nothing. Nicky released Topper from her grip but not before realizing their bodies were extremely close, and the muffled breath from his mouth was tickling her hand.
“You’re insane,” she said as she quickly backed off him. “What the fuck are you doing here?” She questioned still in shock.
Topper was also in shock, he took a minute to gather his thoughts, a little hurt she might not have remembered their plans.
“Um, last night, you said we’d go crabbing today, but we didn’t really discuss details so I thought if I came by,” he paused and pointed towards his jeep, “with breakfast, bait, cages, and bungees we could head out early, they say the best time to catch anything is the morning before the water heats up, but I didn’t want to come too early,” Topper was now rambling.
“You legitimately want to go crabbing with me?” Nicky asked confused. While she was the one who made the plans for today, there was a big part of her that assumed Topper wouldn’t actually follow through.
“I mean, yeah?” Topper said shrugging.
For the first time Nicky looked at the boy, he was wearing a t-shirt that was snug against his body, allowing the muscles he had to lightly show through the shirt. His arms were covered by a zip up hoodie and he had on swim trunks with a pair of bright white sneakers. Nicky smirked.
“You’re gonna wear those to go crabbing?” Her finger pointed towards his shoes.
Topper looked down, “I brought flip flops, and boots.” His hand pointing to the car again.
“What I would do to just see what your shoe collection looks like,” Nicky was laughing now.
Topper blushed, which didn’t go unnoticed by the girl. “Give me 10 minutes. Let me pack up some stuff, as quietly as you can, go park up the street, I’ll come meet you.”
Topper nodded and did as the girl said, not letting another peep out.
Nicky made her way back into the house, swiftly entering into her room and throwing things into her backpack and then wrestling on her hoodie. As she packed some snacks, she heard someone behind her.
“Who were you talking to?” JJ’s voice jump scared her.
She turned in a panic and clutched her chest. “Jesus, JJ. Warn someone before sneaking up on them.” Her eyes looked the boy over, he was still half asleep, which meant he probably didn’t see anything.
“I was on the phone, someone from the Wreck called to ask me to cover for them but I was already scheduled for the shift.” She lied on the spot, a talent all the Maybanks had, it was just that they usually could call each other out for it. But in this case, JJ was still half asleep so he just nodded as his body leaned against the door frame. “Where are you going?” He asked now eyes fully closed.
“Surfing. Want to hit the waves early before the tide gets too crazy.” Another lie.
“Cool, you want company?” He was starting to wake up.
“No.” Nicky answered too quickly, and now that JJ was coming to it, he frowned at her hastiness.
“Sorry. No, I just, kind of want some alone time you know. Think about life. Meditate. You know.”
Awful. What the fuck was that, Nicky. You couldn't have thought of anything better? Why were you even lying? She thought to herself.
She was the older sibling, she could do whatever she wanted, and if today she wanted to go crabbing with Topper Thornton, she would. What the fuck. What was life. She couldn’t believe what was happening. She had just graduated high school, and now she was lying to JJ and going crabbing with probably the person he hated most on the island.
“You good, yo?” JJ asked frowning and snapping the girl out of her thoughts.
“Yea, just feeling like I want some me time after working all day yesterday.” Better.
“Word. I feel you,” JJ nodded, “Can you leave the truck, though? Was gonna go down to Figure Eight and pick up some yard work.”
A sigh of relief came from Nicky, “yea, of course.” She tossed him the keys and began to walk past him, “I’ll catch you later.”
JJ tossed up the peace sign as he dived onto the couch to fall back asleep.
Nicky was forced to grab her surfboard, if JJ had seen her board still there, it would raise red flags, and even though he wasn’t that observant, she wasn’t going to take the chance.
She scurried off to the road, board in hand. Topper fulfilled his promise, he was parked a good amount away from the house, he stepped out when he saw the girl and threw his hands up, confused as to why she had the board.
“I told JJ I was surfing, I couldn’t just leave it.” She said opening the back window to his jeep like it was hers and shoving the board inside.
“Alright, alright, take it easy, take a breath, I got it.” Topper stepped in front of her to adjust the board.
Nicky nodded and made her way to the passenger side of his jeep. Topper Thornton’s jeep. She took that in for a minute. It was clean. Very clean. It smelled like the beach, though, mixed with the scent of his cologne which she let soak in. It was nice. It was woody with a tinge of linen, which honestly could’ve even been his detergent. Suddenly she felt extremely out of place, she had showered this morning but in the Maybank house, it wasn’t exactly the four seasons.
“You good?” Topper asked now next to her, she hadn’t even realized he made his way back.
“Why are you doing this? Is it a joke? Did Rafe put you up to it?” Nicky asked.
“You asked me?” Topper said back a little humor in voice.
“Yea but you must’ve let them know, right. And now it’s like a bet you have going.” Nicky had her guard up.
“You didn’t tell JJ.” Topper leaned back in his seat, a bit more relaxed.
“Because JJ would have come outside and rocked you in the face. And I wasn’t in the mood to clean up blood.” Nicky tried to match his relaxed sense.
“I didn’t tell Rafe or Kelce.” Topper answered ignoring her comment.
“Second secret we’re keeping for each other, Thornton. Pretty soon it’s going to cost you.” Nicky smiled feeling better that this was all intentional.
Topper laughed, “You gonna tell me where to go or are we just gonna sit on the road?”
Nicky smiled and nodded her head to tell him to start the car and with that the two of them were off.
________
“This is beautiful.” Topper said as they were sitting on the edge of the abandoned dock. The sun had risen quite a bit at this point, but it was still projecting a nice sunrise. They had casted their cages and were now just soaking in the sight.
“Place has been abandoned for years, the wildlife has found a way to take over, which makes it the best place to fish or crab.” She shrugged.
“I’m sure JJ scares everything away,” Topper laughed.
Nicky looked over at him. “I–he’s never been here. You’re actually the first and only person I’ve brought here.” Her gaze went to her feet a little embarrassed.
“Secret number 3.” Topper smiled.
“For someone I know nothing about, you sure know a lot of my secrets.” She turned to him.
“Okay, 3 questions, go.” Topper turned to her on the dock.
They were now facing each other, still about 5 feet apart. Nicky’s face contorted into a strange smile.
“What?” She asked confused, “like truth or dare?” Her head shook.
“Minus the dare. Ask me anything you want, that way you know who's keeping your secrets.”
She stared at him, the first 30 seconds was for sure wondering what the actual fuck was happening but the next were more about figuring out what she truly wanted to know about him.
“Favorite color.” She spit out quickly despite her hard thinking.
“Favorite color? That’s what you want to know.” He laughed.
“Okay no, but it’s weird to ask you something personal.” She laughed back but then got hit with a good question and asked it immediately.
“Oh! Here’s one, you go back in time, you can change one thing, what is it?” she asked, perplexed not knowing how she’d even answer this.
Topper looked out to the bay in deep thought, “I don’t know if I’d change anything.” Topper nodded after a long amount of deliberation.
“Nothing? Not one thing?” Nicky was shocked.
Topper shook his head with a frown. “What, not a good answer?”
“Oh no, just, it says a lot about you.” She jokingly judged him.
Topper laughed, “I guess I’m sorry my answer didn’t meet your criteria.”
“I get 2 more, right? Maybe you’ll make up for it, or dig yourself deeper.” Nicky passed him a bag of chips from her bag and grabbed one for herself.
“Use them wisely.” Topper leaned over and grabbed the bag from Nicky.
“Your favorite family tradition.” A chip crunched as Nicky spoke.
“Not a question.” Topper pointed to her and raised his eyebrows.
“Okay, Mr. Technical, what’s your favorite family tradition?” She mocked him.
“Honestly,” Topper paused, “we don’t really have many, we’re not big on that.”
Nicky nodded. “Yea I get that, I mean we don’t have like a Maybank family tradition, but JJ started this thing, on our birthdays, we call it party plate,” she laughed at the name, “it’s an entire plate full with all of your favorite foods, like a little bit of everything, you know?” her smile was huge. “He did it one year when he forgot my birthday and so he came home from the Kildare Buffet with a plate full of mac n cheese, cheesecake, jello, french fries, shrimp and prawns,” she started naming her favorites. “And ever since then, we both just do it for our birthdays as a gift to the other.” She shrugged.
“You eat shrimp and prawns from the Kildare Buffet?” Topper’s eyebrows raised with a smile.
“Hey, we live on the coast, even the mediocre seafood is good.” Nicky threw a chip at him.
“I’m kidding, I’m kidding,” he laughed, “I guess now that you mention it, seafood night is my favorite Thornton tradition.” he said.
“Ahhh, yes infamous seafood night, do tell.” she waved her hand.
“My sister loves crab, like anything and everything crab, so in the beginning and end of the summer I do a seafood night with her. Last year we did like a sushi thing and then soup, this year we just did a crab boil and I’ll have to think of something for the end of the summer.”
“So then it’s not seafood night, it’s crab night.” Nicky smiled. “I love that our traditions revolve around food, it’s very telling.” She looked away for a minute, which meant she missed the smile on Topper’s face.
“They’re both sibling related, too.” Topper added on.
“Again, telling.” Nicky said.
“In what way?” He asked her.
“Am I asking the questions here or are you, Mr. Thornton?” Nicky stood up and started to lift the crab cages out of the water.
“I’ll hold any of my questions for later, I guess.” He lifted his hands innocently before pushing himself up off the dock to help her.
The two of them halted the cages up and let the water pour out of the cages before placing them on the dock, they were filled to the top with crabs. Both of them had to be quick to grab the cooler and throw them in, but there were so many of them that a few escaped easily.
“Holy shit, this is insane.” Topper said as they lifted their last cage up.
“I told you, it’s an insane spot. I tried to tell Heyward about it but people don’t want to listen.” She shrugged.
“Nah you gotta keep this our secret.” Topper started to lift the top of the cage to pour the crabs in but the use of our caught Nicky off guard.
“Our?” she said mumbled. Her attention was on Topper and not the cage, so as it opened and the crabs poured to the cooler, one snuck off and snagged onto her hand.
“FUCK!” she yelled out and dropped the cage back into the water and flung her hand to throw the crab off. It flung through the air and landed a good 20 feet away into the water. Nicky was now walking up and down the dock with her one hand holding her other to put pressure on the pain.
Topper ran over to her, “relax, relax, let me see it.” His voice was on edge but still more level than hers.
She held her hand out to him, Topper grabbed it, and for a moment Nicky forgot that she was even in pain, all she felt was his hand wrapped around hers. He brought it towards his chest, likely to get a closer look but all Nicky could focus on was that her hand was inches away from his muscled body. What the fuck. She thought quickly and snapped her head out of it and looked at the wound Topper was focused on. He was moving her palm around now to see every angle of it. It was red, there was already a bit of bruising, and a small cut in the middle of all of it but nothing horrible.
“It’s not that bad, just hurt since it was a big crab, I have alcohol in my bag, we can clean it and throw a bandaid on it.” He said turning to grab what Nicky would soon realize was a first aid kit.
He kept a first aid kit on him. Very kook of him. But also she wasn’t in a position to judge, it was lucky for her that he had it. Before she knew it, he was back in front of her, holding her again. Without warning, he poured the alcohol on her and she flinched, instinctively pulling her hand away. Topper shushed her, and brought her hand back towards him and placed a small piece of gauze over the cut, patting it dry. Nicky’s heart raced, she wasn’t sure if it was from the shock of the sting or if it was because Topper Thornton was holding her and treating a cut she got from crabbing. With Topper Thornton. What the fuck was happening.
“It’s okay,” he whispered. The heat of his breath hit her face as he looked up to check on her.
She nodded wordlessly, not sure what to say, but even if she did, the words were knocked out of her. Her eyes were lost in his, the minute they made eye contact. If you told her just two days ago that she was going to be left breathless from Topper she would have laughed in your face. Probably flipped you off, too. But there was something happening, and for a short moment, it felt like they were the only two people in the world, and in a way they were. At the abandoned dock, it was just them. No labels. No judgment. No kooks. No pogues. Just Nicky. And Topper. Topper Thornton. Did she mention it was Topper fucking Thornton?
She suddenly noticed how tall he was in comparison to her. With her gaze staring up at him, taking in their height difference, she let out a breath that she didn’t even notice she was holding in. Maybe it was the sign Topper needed, or maybe it was what Nicky needed to unfreeze but the two of them slowly moved closer to each other, their faces now inches apart. Their breath was already clashing together even though their lips were just far apart to leave everything up in the air. There was still a few moments for either of them to pull away, to get their heads straight, but neither of them did. Topper still had her hand in his as their faces were now only an inch apart. With their hearts beating fast, they closed their eyes, both at the same time.
Then, the cooler knocked over.
The noise jumped them apart from each other, hearts still beating fast, but now because the dock was covered with crabs. Nicky screamed as she grabbed Topper’s hand again instinctually to pull him towards her so they both could escape the mess. Topper laughed and followed the girl, quickly grabbing his backpack and the girl’s in his escape.
They left their cages, their bungees, their bait, and just ran down the dock. Hand in hand now. They managed to get to the start of the dock and let go of each other to catch their breath. Nicky had her hands resting on her knees while Topper was running his hand through his frosted tips.
“Holy shit,” Topper said in between gasps. “These crabs are rabid creatures.”
Nicky laughed, “I told you, the wildlife took over here, give it 10 minutes, they’ll have all fallen off the dock and we can grab the cages.”
Topper nodded and just began to belly laugh as he thought about it all and Nicky joined him as they waited the clawed creatures out.
_________
The ride back was silent, but it wasn’t awkward, surprisingly. In some weird way, it felt like the two had known each other for years, and while technically they did, in the 9 years she’d known him, she’d learned more about him today than she did some of her own friends. And that’s when she remembered she had one more question left.
He pulled up to the part of the road where he had parked earlier in the day to wait for her, just up the street from her house.
“I still have one more question.” Nicky said turning to him.
“Ask away.” Topper threw the car in park.
“Why did you really come today?” Her tone was bold but held no emotion in it. She stared at him, thinking maybe she could read his expression, read his body language, something that would give her a logical explanation for what the fuck was happening.
“I just thought it’d be a good time.” He said with a serious face, looking directly at her.
Nicky nodded slowly, she..believed him?
“Was it?” The two words escaped from her mouth quickly.
“That’s your fourth question, Nicky Maybank. I believe I told you that you only get three.” He smiled.
She raised her hands in defeat, a smirk filling her face now at his cleverness. With that, she gathered her things and moved to grab her board from the back of his car. No other words exchanged between them in that time. She moved towards the driver side of the car and just offered up a wave before turning to walk on the grass towards her house.
“It was the best day of summer yet!” Topper yelled out before she got too far ahead.
Nicky stopped walking, letting a chuckle escape from her mouth before she turned around to face him, board still in hand.
“It’s only the second day of summer, Top!” She used his nickname as she called out to him.
Topper felt goosebumps when she yelled out his nickname and he looked down to avoid making eye contact for a minute, a little embarrassed but grateful the girl was a couple dozen feet away and couldn’t see him blushing.
He lifted his head and looked at her, she was grinning from ear to ear and that’s when he knew he wanted to see her smile like that whenever he could get the chance.
“Well, I guess we’re just gonna have to hang out again so we can top it.”
“I guess so.” The grin never left Nicky’s face. And as crazy as it sounded leaving her mouth, she agreed with him, and was looking forward to the next time she’d see him.
